Earlier today I found myself on the prowl at the flea market and stumbled upon pic related. Definitely a strange controller and the person selling it hadn't even identified it. Got it for a dollar. Turns out it's an Xbox controller designed specifically for FPS games and has a small LCD screen in the center almost like a Dreamcast VMU when it's in the controller. It allows you to remap buttons on the controller, and invert the sticks. Pretty neat little thing and it got me thinking about other controllers that are similar to this. Post 3rd party controllers with interesting layouts, features, etc. Interested to see if there's any other oddities this board has experience with.
Wow, that's a weird one! Do you have an xbox to give it a try?
>>12649829Yes and no. Back home I've got one, but I'm actually out of town right now away from my setup, so I have yet to test it. It's happening first thing though once I'm home. Given the appearance of the thing, I figure the best game to christen it is obviously either Halo or Halo 2. I'm interested to try Star Wars Battlefront though. I suppose if you're thinking less like a gamer and more like an average joe it almost has a Boba Fett-esque appearance so it's appropriate enough. Not even the coolest thing I picked up today though.
What's those cylindrical sew-through things on the sides? Are they just for decoration, or do they serve a purpose?>>12649838>Not even the coolest thing I picked up today though. What else did you get?
>>12650380they appear to be bubble levels
>>12650380I got a Neo Geo Pocket Color in Stone Blue w/ five games. SNK Vs. Capcom Match of the Millenium, Neo Turf Masters, Fatal Fury First Contact, Metal Slug First Mission and Sonic Pocket Adventure. Solid little lineup to get me started. Been playing SNK Vs. Capcom and it's been pissing me off though. The final boss is Evil Ryu because my main Terry is on the SNK side. Been kicking my ass since last night, and there are times where I beat him within an inch of his life and he just goes all out and I can't fo anything and other times where I'm getting perfect'd. I know I can beat him but he's hard as fuck and my fuse is short. What's worse is that it's "Evil Ryu" and not an actually interesting character. Like it'd be one thing if he was actually his own character but he's just the worst parts of Akuma and Ryu rolled into one big shitty, unoriginal package. It stings extra hard losing to what's effectively a glorified palette swap. Beyond my frustrations with Evil Ryu though, the games have been good fun.
>>12650380Oh and those see-through parts appear to be purely decorative. Here's a closeup of the one I picked up yesterday and it appears to just he painted plastic underneath. I'll have to get back to my setup to determine if it actually does anything like lighting up but I imagine all the crazy features like that went into the LCD screen. Needs a good cleaning too.
>>12649829Why are you typing like a redditor
>>12650565So it's not a dual spirit level?
I pray nobody else has any memory of using this device.
>>12650589>Use exclamation marks which have existed forever>"wow that's reddit"Sincerely kill yourself
>>12649815i had this but it was for ps2, it was cool as the shoulder buttons were like gun triggers, the screen as you have found is for remapping buttons, i used to use this on timesplitters 2, 4 player with my frens, found the large shape of the controller and probably the movement/sensitivity of the sticks made me play worse than a standard DS2 controller, its cool but basically a handicap if playing against other people, i left it at my frens house and it got thrown out.also had another controller for ps2 where you could remove the dpad/buttons and analogs and switch them around to different positions, points for anyone that can find a picture of it. i think both of these were sold in argos here in the UK around 2003-2005.
>>12649815I got this years ago at a Ross or Kohls or something, but pretty sure its a ps2 version.
>>12649815While I can't remember the name a buddy of mine with a Sega Saturn has a really weird controller for it. It was designed to look almost exactly like a PS1 controller with the same button layouts and general design, it's very odd and honestly looks more like someone's schizophrenic custom controller than a commercial one.

>>12651587Weird. Here's the Sega Retro page on 3rd Party Saturn shit, lemme know if anything here jumps out at you. Judging by your description it sounds like the "Saturnstick" thing they've got here or the Stealth. Find it funny that the controller literally called the Saturnstick doesn't even have an analog stick.https://segaretro.org/Saturn_third-party_controllers
Here you go, bro
Sam sung gam boy pad. (Master system in Korea)
>>12651919Yeah that segastick looks right, only thing off are the buttons must have been replaced
>>12651806I actually have Steel Battalion and the controller and that posture is honestly equivalent to how it feels to use. If you aren't familiar, the thing has a 200 page manual that you HAVE to study to understand how to control it. You have to run wipers to keep your screen clear, and that button on the top right with the caution tape is crucial because if you die and don't hit that as your tank is going down, the game wipes your save file!! It's hardcore, and it's tough as nails but it's good fun, especially with that kooky controller.
>>12649815I'll never find it but this looks kinda like the concept for a PlayStation handheld I saw in a games magazine long before the PSP was even an idea, around the time the PS2 was just kicking off. It used the aesthetics of that controller but it was in the shape of a Gameboy and had all the buttons and even the thumbsticks you'd find on a PS2 controller.
>>12650589Saar you used the punctuation saar, not very convincing saar!
>>12651428>>12652791Reacting that way to a controller is gay and anyone who posted here long enough has already seen it anyway
>>12653423Maybe he's tired of being cynical and miserable and forcing himself to type in a happy and joyful way to trick his brain into being happy and joyful because it's better than being a little dickhead for no reason all the time, like SOME people...
I picked up one of these on a whim and surprisingly it's become my favorite way to play 2D games on the Saturn. I know the Saturn already supposedly has the best d-pad ever with the model 2 controller but I've never been a fan of webbed diagonals. Well, this bad boy's d-pad feels EXACTLY like the pad on the SNES. The buttons are very similar to the snes as well, except for the shoulder buttons which are more snappy. Sort of a middle ground between the SNES's rubber dome shoulder buttons and the Saturn's mouse click shoulder buttons. But this controller's best feature is actually its size. It's like 1.5x wider than the standard 2D gamepad and feels SO much more comfortable in my adult hands as a result. Feels like somebody merged the spirit of the Xbox Duke controller with a gamepad from the early 90s. I just love it.
>>12652724I picked up a controller for cheap and now im looking for a second since the psedo online only sequel actually includes a system link made apparently.
>>12653432No, that can't be it.
>>12650562I've been playing neo geo pocket games with an emulator on a modded wii. While cool and interesting because I never saw one growing up, I could not justify ever buying a real one. Any game recommendations? I've been playing sega saturn lately(not on the modded wii, I tried and it runs like dogshit)
>>12656060There are two collections on switch that cover almost everything worth playing on it.
>>12656060I've been loving Capcom Vs. SNK Match of the Millenium. It's a fast paced fighting game with phenomenal chibi sprite art. There's even a basic custom character feature that lets you write a win quote and pick a dedicated character/team of characters ala KoF as its own button on the CSS. The gameplay is fantastic and keeps up with console fighting games, or at least as closely as a game on a Neo Geo Pocket can. I'm a pretty hardcore collector with a little of everything, so Neo Geo Pocket appeals to me purely by nature of what it is, but if you just want to experience the games I say emulate em because it's hard to justify blowing that much money on original hardware if you don't care that much. The main draw of the system itself is its surprisingly responsive and fun to use microswitch directional pad. You will never truly experience these games without it as many of the fighters were designed with it in mind. Hitting the special inputs is buttery smooth, and unless you're using something like a Wii Classic Controller, the Wii's D-pad is actual fucking dogshit in comparison. Much like the original Game Boy, the screen isn't backlit, so you have to play near a lamp or in daylight. It's a great looking screen though all considered. All in all it's a great little thing if you like retro handhelds and are into original hardware, but if you're not big into high prices and maintaining OG hardware then I wouldn't sweat it. Just to give you an idea of what you'd be looking at, I got my system for 110 and my 5 games for 170. Not that it's any surprise but Neo Geo's a rich man's game just like it always has been.
>>12653432Sounds gay
