Easily the best of the NES games
>>
>>12651746
While I don't share your opinion, I respect your right to have it.
>>
I'm a sucker for classes, so my vote goes to 3, but 2 is definitely underrated and unjustly hated. The idea of customizing your characters by powering them up based on the skills they used is really cool.
>>
its damn good I played the wanderswan version earlier this year and was shocked it has the reputation as "the bad one." its leagues better than DQ2
>>
I love it, but keep hoping they have Kawazu do a remake one day

>was shocked it has the reputation as "the bad one."
That's because you didn't play the fami version. You also didn't beat the game.

Nobody played the fami version in the US, at least not nearly enough people to form the widely accepted opinion that it's bad.

The truth is that the majority of people never played any version and simply heard about the stat progression system and worked themselves into a shoot about it secondhand.

This. I like 2 also, it's just least favorite of the NES FFs. All of them are nice.
3 > 1 > 2 for me

There is a huge difference between the popular opinion on 2 in Japan and in the west, and that difference comes from how nobody in the west played it until the 00's and when both the GBA version released and the FC version was fan translated, and that fan translation was without a manual. For instance people got to play FF5, fan translated in 1998, years before FF2.

The WS version should be similar to the PSX version, that is to say faithful to the FC version (unlike the GBA/PSP/PR shit) but with bugfixes. It pains me to say about a
>handled port made years after the fact
and it IS inferior to the other 2 valid versions by its handheld nature, but it's still a valid way to play the game unlike any version made after PSX.
>>

Never played the NES FFs, should I give them a try or play the remasters?
>>
>>12653464
I'm biased towards playing the originals. Either way, give them a try, they're all good.

Will do anon, I heard 3 was kind of sluggish near the end because of the crystal tower, is that over exaggerated?
>>
>>12653501
The final dungeon (it's really like 4 dungeons in one) is indeed huge. You might spend like 20% of the entire game time in there. Only way to save is to go back to the world map, but at least there's a bit of world map between the first maze and the rest of the dungeon, so you don't have to backtrack the entire way.
>>
>>12653516
But as far as sluggish goes, it might be a slog for some but I actually enjoyed the crystal tower and the other final dungeons attached to it. I imagine it would suck if you die on the final boss and have to redo it though.

This. Friends of mine advised me to skip it when doing a chronological playthrough of the whole mainline series. Between playing IX and X I went back and played II, was shocked at how completely fine it was. It wasn't incredible or anything, but competent enough relative to games of the time. I was pretty annoyed to find out neither of those friends had actually beaten the game either. Now I never really trust anyone's opinion on a game until I've played it myself.

Easily my favorite part of the game because it was so dangerous. Attrition is such an important aspect to the experience of a dungeon crawl. Cloud of Darkness was pretty tough too, the accomplishment of defeating her was very cathartic.

there are deep human psyche elements at play where people want to play the role of the enlightened critic and bestow their opinions onto others and feel compelled to lie. That coupled with getting biased by opinion they hear and wanting to be part of a group so if they have no opinion they will adopt the common one. In my advanced age online opinion can never talk me out of playing anything, it can only alert me to the existence of games and im capable of determining if im going to play it or not. When you spend enough time online you realize how terrible and useless individual opinions are, youd have better luck flipping a coin to know if a game is worth playing.

I'm curious if you played the NES version or are going off the later PSP / GBA port. The NES version did some really fucking stupid shit if so but I can understand liking the other ones and appreciating the interesting stuff it does compared to other NES games.

Personally my favorite is FF3 but specifically the FF3 3D remake. I just really like a lot of the stuff it does.
>>
>>12653853
I agree for the most part. I don't think it's entirely a waste of time, but few people are willing to put in the effort, autism and good faith enough to explain why XYZ is good/bad, and use evidence to support it.
>>
I was on FF /pilgrimage/ and played several versions of the Famicom game. I can say for sure that the original is godawful. No dash, spells are unreliable, targeting all with a spell takes a year even on the fastest response rate.
Get FFII Extend, it’s easily the best version if you don’t mind the creative liberties taken with the new content.
If you are more of a purist then UFF2 comes in a second for best famicom hack. But I would say the numerous QoL improvements in extend make it much better in every regard
