This is practically the definitive version of the game, 2 super bosses and some new dungeons, the ability to swap characters for the final dungeon, and a superior localisation. This version of the game also made me aware of the Easy Type japanese exclusive version of FF4 since the Zeromus EG super boss sprite is just the one from the easy type release.

>>12652453looks like someone's first project in rpg maker xp
I definitely think SNES looks better than GBA, BUT I love how compact that version is presented. Battles have a cozy feeling because everyone is packed in there. It feels even more cozy coming from the Pixel Remaster where there's all that screen space being used for nothing.
For all the fools who have only played the GBA version, this is what they think Zeromus's signature Big Bang move looks like.
Here's the SNES version. Even ripped from a youtube video with shitty compression, it's a twenty million times better than the cringe GBA version.
>>12655213They also ruined the best monster sprite in the game, I see. Zeromus? More like Zeromidget!>just remembered the Easy Type version of Zeromus also appears for some reason...Dare I ask how it looks there?
>>12655216Flashing red and yellow and moving the clouds slightly faster isn't really "better"
>>12655216
>>12655335Exactly. Was going to say this is going to give people seizures. Both me and my brother would have to look away from the screen during certain attacks. What bugs me is how in every version after the SNES the clouds from the foreground are removed and don't look as good. Like in the GBA port, thankfully there's no extreme flashing, but the clouds are all equally moving at the same speed which flattens the depth and ruins the effect.
>>12655316If those are the only differences you see, you are not qualified to have an opinion. The clouds not only move significantly faster, they accelerate and decelerate, each row independently for a more organic effect. The flashes don't just flash, there's a pattern of increasing intensity that climaxes with the audio effects. In short, the SNES version was made by devs who cares. They paid attention to details and delivered the most exciting, dramatic effect they could given the limitations they were working with. The GBA version was coded to a half-assed spec by a wagie who didn't give a shit.
>>12655353Take out the flashing and the GBA one still looks retarded and lame. (There are hacks that disable them for people with defective genes). Funny you utterly tasteless faggots can't help but makes excuses to ignore the blatant inferiority of the GBA.

>>12655601Was that the case in the WSC version?
>>12655213>>12655216I'm not putting up with the entire rest of the game being ugly because one boss (whose sprite is unanimated regardless) doesn't have a fancy effect in the background for one attack.
>>12655587Merely saving innocent bystanders from lies.>>12655605Yeah, I think the PSP version comes off looking cheap at times but at least it's not just a lazy port of the SNES.

>>12655601>he now resorts to nitpickingnever seen someone have such a meltdown over objective facts, cherry picking doesn't get you far.
>>12655702>I'm not putting up with the entire rest of the game being ugly because one bossThe entire rest of the game is full of shitty animations. Almost everything that moves is awkward and weird, the accompanying sound effects are even worse. Zeromus is just so obvious no amount of bullshitting can excuse it. It's the climax of the game, the big boss's signature move, and the GBA completely faceplants. The original SNES FF4 is a beautiful game. It is not ugly at all. The art (especially the animated effects) is impressive given the constraints of the platform. Of course, the tile-mapped battle backgrounds are visually simpler than the static images used on the GBA. FF4 on SNES was limited to roughly 1MB of ROM. So they had to use techniques like tile-mapping to conserve space (FF3's battle ground was literally plain black). But it's not ugly. The backgrounds are consistent and many have a tasteful level of detail (like the river in the back of the watery cave). None of them are embarrassing, the way the GBA Zeromus animation is embarrassing. The extra 7 MB of space on the GBA basically enabled two things:1. They replaced the tilemapped battlefields with pre-rendered backgrounds.2. Monster sprites got slightly more detail. These are largely trivial things that only impresses people with no real standards or appreciation for videogame artwork. The pre-rendered backgrounds are consistently generic, in fact sometimes they're so carelessly designed that the enemies don't even fit on them properly (see: >>12655601)PS the GBA font is ugly as shit. The letters have weird shapes and weird alignment and the overall effect is terrible. The SNES font is simple and clear.
>>12655789It's not nitpicking. It's exactly what you expect from a low-effort port that just pastes in a bunch of pre-rendered images to impress retards like you.
>>12655820>i'm retarded because uhh low effort post!! nice cope, faggot
no handheld port can be the definitive version of anything. having to play on a tiny screen and one as notorious as the GBA is an absurd downgrade.
>>12655830Emulating the GBA gives you the full screen experience, or just use the gamecube GBA player. Just because the screen is to tiny for your eyes doesn't make it not the definitive version.
>>12655820Yeah, it impresses me, unlike the monochromatic menus on SNES
>>12655016This retard doesn't actually care for the improvements that the GBA excels in, he just wants to shitfling and deny reality.
>>12655826Low effort PORT, you sub-literate pleb.Lazy cashgrab.
>>12655859>lazy cashgrab.and that's how I know you're a zoomshit, because this port is superior to the SNES and had a superior localisation to what we actually got. Unless you think the shitty jank translation in the US SNES version of FF4 is somehow acceptable, which you are clearly retarded enough to believe.
>>12655867hell, the GBA got the best translation and so many other additions that makes it naturally superior to the SNES like character icons so you can make out what they look like instead of having to use your imagination with the sprites or look at the cover art. Just improvement after improvement, it's the superior definitive way to play the game.
>>12655871>GBA got the best translationAnd yet they still keep that damn Spoony Bard line because of memes.
>>12655842Right, you are impressed by trivial things that don't really matter much and are explained ENTIRELY by the 14 year gap in technology. You are the ultimate no-taste-having pleb. You have no ability to recognize good animation, good sound effects, and the artful combination of both with good timing into a complete and consistent presentation.
>>12655876>And yet they still keep that damn Spoony Bard line because of memes.it's funny though.
>>12655881what does he even call him in JP?
>>12655878>Right, you are impressed by trivial things that don't really matter much and are explained ENTIRELY by the 14 year gap in technology.Immediately exposes himself to being a zoomer, while you weren't even a thought in your mother's head I was seeing gaming evolve from shit like atari to the likes of the SNES, GBA, N64, PS1, etc. You aren't as easily impressed because you were born in 2009 when gaming had already peaked, you weren't there and this is why you're having a sissy meltdown. Noted.
>>12655884I did some curious googling on this exact question, from what I can gather it was meant to be something akin to "You son of a bitch" or "you bastard!" but I don't think it was easy to really translate into english, and Nintendo of America with it's family friendly policies wouldn't of allowed it either way.
>>12655789At least they look like they're standing in the water on SNES. The background may be more detailed on GBA but it looks off.
>>12655898to be fair you couldn't really make standing on water look naturally, the only reason the SNES version makes it work is because the "water" is just a static flat foreground with no transparency.
>>12655903look natural*
>>12655867>Unless you think the shitty jank translation in the US SNES version of FF4 is somehow acceptableThe translation is poor, but that also means GBA can't really take any credit for being better.Ultimately you have to decide whether the embrassingly terrible audio-visual experience you get with the GBA version is worth it for the moderately better translation, when you can just use any translation you want with any version. (Multiple translations of the SNES version have already appeared ITT).In the end, the prose is just not that important to FF4. There's always enough to get the gist and even the engrish mistakes are often funny.
>>12655871>like character icons so you can make out what they look like instead of having to use your imagination with the sprites or look at the cover artlel, good one.Guys, this is a troll, stop getting so worked up and mind your blood pressure!
>>12655909>slightly Worser audio quality that isn't actually that bad in exchange for superior graphics, more post-game content, 2 new super bosses, new weapons & armour, and a better localisationDoes this even have to be debated?>>12655916I accept your concession
>>12655886>zoomer zoomer zoomerI was 12 when FF4 came out on the SNES.Keep coping though.>>12655903>the only reason the SNES version makes it work is because the "water" is just a static flat foreground with no transparency.Yeah well that's what you get when you play an original game. You get consistency. You see the direct results of the craftsmanship. Standing on the water pattern looked fine in battle, so they left it. (and they had a transparency effect for walking through water on the field map).Simply changing the background to a high-resolution pre-rendered image isn't enough. It draws more attention to details that don't align properly, that an original talented dev working on an original project that they actually cared about, would solve somehow. They'd fix up those details and make it work. Anyone can tell that they just didn't do that with the GBA port.
>>12655936>I was 12 when FF4 came out on the SNES.Not fooling me, zoomie.
>>12655867The PS1 translation is arguably better than the GBA one though. Definitely underrated at least.

>>12652082>This is practically the definitive version of the gameDetermining the definitive version is easy, first ask yourself is this better than the SFC original. To figure that out just look at the release dates, FF4 SFC came out in 1991, 4th entry in a budding powerhouse franchise and punching well within its weight class. Its the second SFC JRPG and looks worse than Gdleen and Phantasy Star 2 but compared to the entirety of the RPG library at this point we are within the 1%. Add onto that the original and compelling narrative and there is an argument to this being the greatest JRPG of all time. Now moving on to the GBA edition of FF4. Its the end of 2005. FF12 has gone gold and at this point the Xbox 360 is already out. The RPG genre is essentially peaked and the games of 1991 might as well be pong in comparison. enter FF4, but now it sounds like diarrhea. The story is terrible because you already played it, there are 2 bosses total because you beat all the old ones. There are no characters because you met them already, they already died once. So the graphics are worse than shovelware from 2005 and the story is plagiarized, what is this defining again?
>>12655918>Does this even have to be debated?Yes. You care about retarded things that don't matter and advocate for an otherwise vastly inferior version of the GAME and the overall audio-visual experience, based on a handful of lazy graphical bells and whistles that aren't even well-integrated.>more post-game content, 2 new super bossesI get all the post-game content I could ever want from https://ff4fe.com/
>>12655942Believe whatever makes you feel better about yourself. The arguments stand either way.
>>12656000>Yes. >>12656181>Was there a reason we never got 5 on the snes here in the US? Square assumed the americans wouldn't be able to grasp the Job system and released Mystic Quest over there instead of 5.
>>12656181V got passed up twice, it was going to be released for SNES as "Final Fantasy Extreme" with a translation by Ted Woolsey but it didn't get far in development. Then there was a Windows 95 conversion by Top Dog Software by an unknown translator (likely Kaoru Moriyama, may or may not be built on the Woolsey version), but that also fell through. The wip text files for that version got used for the PSX version. This version failed against the old SFC fan-translation because Square assumed it passed the polish phase.
>>12655878>trivial things that don't really matter muchThe way the game looks across its entire runtime is trivial and doesn't matter much, but a special effect in one boss fight is pivotal?

>>12656234>>12656251Interesting. I’ve actually beaten mystic quest and while it is super easy, it was a decent enough experience. Would’ve rather had V but hey, we have it now and got a fun albeit very watered down side game too.
>>12656251Didn't IV and V also pretty much switch places?>the game eventually retitlef Final Fantasy IV was originally going to be called "Final Fantasy V">a mysterious "Final Fantasy IV" was in development for Famicom, to be released after "FFV" for those who didn't adopt to the next gen yet, would have expanded on FFIII's gameplay>this naturally got canceled and Final Fantasy V became Final Fantasy IVThe theory is that the concepts for the lost Famicom FFIV got repurposed into the final SFC FFV, which DID follow up and (in popular opinion) surpass FFIII, but it's never been confirmed; they instead said that certain ideas got put in the SFC FFIV, but the timeline for that seems rather tight and doesn't seem to line up with what little we know of FC FFIV.
