Ocarina of time and Majora's Mask both follow a single mutable timeline: Your actions in the past rewrite the future. Take for example the bootstrap paradox you create with the song of storms: Adult Link learns the song from the windmill guy, The guy says a kid played it 7 years ago and messed up the windmill, Link goes back and becomes that kid. That's a single mutable timeline, doesn't work with branching timeline string theory. Compare that to Trunks in DBZ: His actions in the past can't change the future because the timelines just split. Other examples: Kakariko Well, Magic Beans, Spirit Temple. So when you beat the game, you just assume you changed the future for good. You don't assume there's any dbz dark timeline shit. You just overwrite the bad future with a good future. BTW, this is also Majora works. When wind waker comes out, the game just tells you that ganon escaped but the hero didn't return. Nothing in this game suggests your playing a particular timeline. It works as a direct sequel to ocarina, no timeline bullshit needed. After all, even after the retcon, Ganon escapes and wrecks the world in literally EVERY timeline. It's twilight princess that fucks everything up, because twilight princess existing alongside wind waker, requires branching multiverse string theory. This is where the timeline retcon madness begins. TP was the source of the cancer.
