You now remember Ico's American box art.

Americans were literally addicted to terrible box art in the 90s/00s. It was a real problem.
>>
>>12653413
Man his hands must have been splintered to hell and back by the end of the game.
>>
>>12653416
7 and X are passable, still kinda lame to just have "dude with sword" posing.
>>
>>12653413
do you need to remember it as an oddity because you never actually owned it? feelsbadman

Wtf are you talking about? 7 is awesome and all the US covers have more life to them, why would you want generic logo on a white background?
>>
>>12653413
Looks badass
>>
>>12653413
Someone clearly had Episode I Anakin on the brain when designing the box art. So... does this kid also find sand to be rough, coarse, and irritating?
>>
>>12653413
>>12653416
What's wrong with actually having the fucking characters on the cover? I would rather have that than literally nothing but the title or cheap artsy crap that doesn't sells the game like >>12653457
>>
>>12653458
It's a matter of taste, desu.
In practically every example I've ever seen, the Japs have the best taste in game box art for sure.
>>
>>12653458
>why would you want generic logo on a white background?
It's ballsy, it's iconic, it says "We don't need to sell you on this game, it's Final Fantasy". Amano's little flourish is like the cherry on top. It just stands out in a sea of boxes begging for your attention.
>>
>>12653472
No, anon, it needs to look like slop for children
>>
>>12653468
>cheap artsy crap that doesn't sells the game
Americans truly are something else, man.
>>
>>12653468
>Despite the positive reception by critics, Ico did not sell well. By 2009, only 700,000 copies had been sold worldwide, with 270,000 in the United States, and the bulk in PAL regions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ico#Release

The artsy PAL box art moved more copies than the shitty US cover.
>>
>>12653413
I know, it's better than the pretentious sketch he made for the game's pitch meeting.
>>
>>12653482
>pretentious sketch
I'm the first to shit on fart sniffing artfag pseuds but Ico's box art is fairly straightforward. It features a collage of in-game locations, depicts the thrust of the gameplay, informs you of the atmosphere the game will surround you with and it just makes you stop and think and wonder "hmm, what's all this about then?".
>>
>>12653472
I can understand your point, though I think the cultural context matters here since before FF7 the series wasn't that big. FF7 put it on the map and it was the whole "badass FMVs" and shit that made the game sell well, so the cover art naturally needed to be just as cool which it is because it's so iconic.

*In America
>>
>>12653413
I never forgot it
>>
if the pal boxart had been done in time for the american release it would have been used almost certainly. the original cover is bad but it wasn't insanity.
>>
>>12653416
what the fuck were they thinking with that ff8 drop shadow
>>
>>12653416
US version of Silent Hill 4 and Resident Evil 4 mog the gay boring Japanese covers.

Minimalism is soulless.
>>
>>12653416
I bet you think this is invigorating
>>
>>12653472
>our franchise is popular so we should put zero effort in promoting it

Amano's artwork is all you need. That's plenty cool enough for anyone with taste.

>>12653613
Its a nice logo I won't argue with that. But slapping a logo onto white nothingness is pure laziness.
>>

The american seethes at artistic expression.

Are you trolling or something? Games back then before 3D required you use your imagination, just look at atari game covers in comparison to the actual game.
>>
>>12653648
You just know FF7 would have been a failure if they went for that for official art and the game's cover, Amano awful pretentious art for 1 4 and 6 also didn't even make it out of Japan lol.
>>12653650
Yes we call that false advertisement

FF7 was the first mainline FF ever released in Europe and they used the Japanese cover.
>>
>>12653717
>FF7 was the first mainline FF ever released in Europe
I thought you were lying but got dayum I'm glad I was born in 93 and didn't have to live through the retardation of major JRPG's not releasing in Europe.
>>
>>12653736
They needed to be released in multiple languages, which was costlier to put on cartridge. That's why there were far fewer releases and they were a lost choosier with a less-tested market.
>>
>>12653416
>dude, minimalism lmao
US box art is better in every instance in your image

I’ve loved all the icoverse games. Wish I had the attention span to finish them.
>>
>>12653416
These are individually better though, except for 10 where the logo can stand on it's own just fine, and the bacground noise being much higher detracts from it. Although maintaining a constant minimalist aesthetic gives the series more identity relative to others, which is significant given FF is a franchise with tons of games, but individually it's just uninspired, and thus lowered out of context. The besefit of absolute minimalism is that it's impossible for it to look ugly but it never looks great.
>>
>>12656062
>icoverse
>I’ve loved all the games
>the attention span to finish them.
You don't belong here. Go away.
>>
>>12653576
Lol I would've thought the designer hadn't even watched the film if not for the ziggurat.
Although it's kind of funny to do a literal take on "Blade Runner" considering the title was borrowed from an unrelated story which was literally about smuggling surgical equipment.
>>
>>12653576
this isn't really the same thing. final fantasy uses a series emblem motif and the illustrations have a signature artistic style. this is just generic minimalism that has no particular connection to blade runner.
>>
>>12653416
I like the use of minimalist symbol covers when a game/series has the gravitas to justify it. though the spacing of those Jewell cases isn't great.
>>
>>12653468
he doesn't even look like the in-game character
>>
>>12653468
you're instinct to ridicule pretension has over extended itself. the ico cover is a cool landscape that sells the experience of the game, a grand journey through a stark land. completely reasonable commercial application that also looks good.
