>Brands itself on being a beginner friendly & easy JRPG>Universally hated decades later for being way to easyI believe humanity is just fucking retarded or something, it's a great game but the "murr its way to easy" crowd destroyed its reputation. Why does every game need to be max difficulty shmup shit to be beloved?
>>12653519>Japs thinking Americans need a beginner RPG>The average American RPG at the time
>>12653524I might just be a pleb or something, the hardest RPG I've ever played was the original fallout, 2 was easier though.
>>12653524This. japs are morons
>>12653553No don't you get it. Look at how complex this is. You need to have yussha and maou!
>>12653524>>12653553You mean Wizardry games? The games beloved by Japanese and ignored by Americans?
Everybody loved it and it sold really well. I'm not sure why people say it's hated today, aside from some Reddit Mouth types I don't see many complaints. It's fun.
>>12653582Japanese don't like Wizardry games by Sir-Tech, they have new knockoffs using the name in a licensed fashion. The only REAL way to play Wizardry is on the Apple ][, you play the first three games in order and import your characters into the newer game. Some people here seriously suggest playing on the tendie, lol.
>>12653602>boohoo nintendo bad because they are popular so this random rpg remake with no relation to them is bad tooWhy yes I would rather play the remakes with music and actual graphics and better gameplay than the literally who computer originals
>>12653615>better gameplayKek how is the gameplay better? You don't even sound like you've played...
>>12653524Wasn't it specifically the American console audience that MQ was aiming for, which wouldn't be used to games like Wizardry?
>>12653618You get more classes and don't have to type the spells like a cuck in the remakes
>>12653673>remakesThey're not really remakes if they change the game, they're reboots. If you didn't play it on the Apple ][ you didn't win the game, simple as.
>>12653674>those versions are bad>no actually they are better>then they don't count waaahLmao
I think the most interesting thing about Mystic Quest is what Square thought had to be changed for non-RPG gamers. Obviously the game is very easy, but it's also lacking in random encounters and has a lot more "overworld" gameplay with how you use your weapons to solve puzzles outside of combat. It's pretty similar to Lufia 2 in those ways, I wonder if that game was also targeted towards people who don't play RPGs?
>>12653519>couldn't even get Amano to do the artLazy and uninspired gaijin slop
>>12653681How are they bad? Wizardry on Apple ][, and Ultima on Apple ][, between them, created the Japanese games you love so much.In terms how it works, if you mistype the spell, that's on YOU, it'd be like in the dungeon if you mumbled the wrong incantation. Same deal. Selecting it from the menu means you're lazy and it takes away from the actual gaming experience. Shit the Japanese "wizardry" games even have automapping! LOL. That's for posers. You probably play Ultima on Nintendo too. You make me sick.
>>12653694>it's just like my faggot larp tabletop time!Yeah that sucks, give me automapping, I'm already paying with a spellpoint/item, I want to play the game not fucking draw a map>UltimaThose all suck shit, only Wizardry is good
>>12653708>Yeah that sucks, give me automappingIf you used automapping, you didn't even play Wizardry.>Those all suck shit, only Wizardry is goodThat's your opinion, but it's an incorrect one. It's doubtful you've ever played any of these games, not really. How could you have an opinion on them?
>>12653519Funny thing, while this game is prime for a hard-type hack, instead it has two easy-type hacks.
>>12653787I wonder why nobody has decided to make a hard mode, that'd definitely alleviate a lot of people's whining.
>>12653519>universally hated>gets regular threads here full of praiseI don't even think I've ever seen a negative opinion of this game, here or elsewhere. False premise thread once again.
>>12653793>I don't see any hate for it in my containment zone of 20 active posters and bots!
>>12653796It sold quite well, people seemed to enjoy it at the time. The old JRPGs from that era were all for children, that's the one complaint I think is valid but you can project that over practically the entire pre-CD console RPG library days. I've noticed a lot of tendies glazing OOT lately, but dude. That's a kid's game for little kids. Same type of category.
>>12653757I played Wizardry, the good versions though> It's doubtful you've ever played any of these gamesI played them, they are just glorified adventure games with the most awful combat system ever made, no wonder everyone took the combat from Wizardry.
>>12653527Fallout 1 isn't really 'hard' so much as the combat is stupidly unbalanced and just falls apart at later levels because guns are way too lethal in general (for both you and your enemies). 2 did better in that regard in that it was a lot less lethal.
>>12653793I think it's really boring. There's way too many enemies for how simple the combat is and it just becomes a really unfun grind (not in the sense that you need to level up but because there's SOOOOOOOOO many enemies, holy fuck)It's very charming and does some cool stuff though. The story is also fine if you don't mind it being funny / not taking itself seriously with the jokes.
>>12653848At the time they came out they were quite the hot shit. They became archetypes which is why they are popular today. Of course there could be better graphics, sound could be included, menus... then you've made Dungeon Master, another classic, and improve that a bit and you have EOB.Modern gamers hate a lot of what made Wizardry a legend in game history, which is why nu-Wizardry has all kinds of comfort features to engage the casuals. Heck you can even savescum now.
>>12653524Burgershart-designed RPGs didn't translate well to home console ports.
>>12653895Oh shit I'm going to look this up, and see what hell I'm in store for. I will also check out the C64 version. Which will be better? Sound counts for 3 points, graphics 3, gameplay fidelity 3, 1 style point to assign according to whim.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUi42dTxdUghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3ggj3_MxsE
>>12653793It's impossibly difficult and it's designed to torture you. Most people who say they beat it didn't, they save-scummed or used a new version with cheat features like auto mapping etc. It's the archetypal "the game is evil and tries to be difficult" game but the puzzles end up being pretty easy to solve eventually, once you know what they are, and develop your map, and the enemies can be dealt with most times except when they just kill you and it's over.Cheats were developed for the thing from early times. In the earliest days it would be sector editing of a save file "at rest" and changing the save data in regular ways, at one point the locations for all the stats and equipment were mapped and you could just cheat like crazy, the developers eventually responded but you could simply cheat in the first game and have a better chance at the second and third, which is where cheating became harder through sector editing.Unlike most people here I was there. I loved to cheat at games, I mapped the save data of Bard's Tale myself with a hex editor and WozMon. In the old days the save game data would just be a memory dump of the appropriate data which would include location, facing (so you were facing the same way), probably game day or something, equipment, and a list of quests and check-points stored as flags in 8-bit values.
>>12653524>>12653553these two retards are why JRPGs are so beloved globally and why pokemon and final fantasy took over the world and Ultima and WRPGs are dead. Just completely lost, no idea whats going on.
>>12653936This is a very funny post
>>12653938>the real thing that matters isn't the game, but how many idiots buy itThese games are all out of print, anon, this is a retro game subreddit where we talk about games and systems that are no longer produced. It doesn't matter how many retards play FIFA Soccer, which has been among the top selling games for decades. Nobody even mentions it here because it's hardly relevant, the only reason it's so popular is the normies have to have matching rosters and portraits and stats with their TV sports. But those are super top selling games, where the heck is Final Fantasy now? Not doing as well as your brain dead sports games, so that means it sucks compared to them.>>12653945How? You think everybody else is also a fellow zoomer? How do you think people beat Wizardry? Many cheated, I know for a fact. I learned all about sector editing from a kid at school who learned it from his dad who was an engineer lol.
>>12653938I think Pokemon and Final Fantasy mogging every Ultima game is the real reason of that
>>12653936>>12653947What could've possibly given you the idea I was talking about Wizardry. Look at what I was replying to in this post. >>12653793
>>12653519It's boring. Too much combat.
>>12653602>Japanese don't like Wizardry games by Sir-TechThen why did they make so many ports of them? For funsies? Somebody was clearly buying them over in nip land.
>>12653936>>12653947Retard.
>>12654075>It's boring. Too much gameplay.
>>12653519The only people who outright hate it are those who had completely unrealistic expectations of it.>>12653524tbf the SNES audience wasn't overlapping much with Wizardry audience.
>>12653553Wizardry was bigger in Japan than in the U.S>>12653602Dumbass.
>>12653674>They're not really remakes if they change the gameImpressively insipid.
>>12653787Are those made as jokes?>>12653796No, he's right, it's not universally hated, you will find people on /vr/ who say the game isn't bad, and for a long time. When you take the game's intent into mind, it becomes difficult for a rational person to spew bile at it. Maybe not liking it, but it's fundamentally intended to be babby's first JRPG and that's what it does, and is basically ok at that.Perhaps somewhat misaimed, but it was always intended to be a kid's bike with training wheels, not an athlete's mountain bike.
>>12653693I don't miss this time period when 3DCG was the go-to graphic style because it was "modern."
>>12655556>Wizardry was bigger in Japan than in the U.SNo it wasn't, you're thinking of nu-"wizardry" like games many years later for different systems, whether or not they are licensed to use the official name or not.>>12655556>>12655576Retarded thirdies.
>>12655641Those "nu-wizardry" games are 100 times more Wizardry than the gay space nigger trilogy made by some hack that didn't make the original games
>>12653693By that point Nomura was the main artist anyway and Amano just drew unrelated stuff that didn't even look like the games
>>12655649There's that Reddit Mouth again, LOL.You couldn't make a post without it, it fills in for having a point with you. You stand out you know.
>>12655674Plebbit says nigger now?
>>12655676Been doing it since about 2015, desperately trying to fit in here.
>>12655685Go say nigger in reddit and see what happens
>>12655686Redditors say it when they come to 4chan to try to blend in, Redditors like you. You've never fit in here, people can sense your Reddit 'tude.
>>12655691Redditors would never say nigger, nigger
>>12655693You just did, to try to fit in. Doesn't work.
>>12653519healthy human beings concern themselves with adventure, not numbers
>>12655995bot post
people hate Mystic Quest because its existence is actually an insult
>>12656064We don't talk about ourselves here.
>>12656064I used to think this but then I realized that games like this are what America should have been doing for years, actually making accessible RPGs that anyone can enjoy not just adult men. The reason you think its an insult is the same reason why >>12653938 this happened. Mystic Quest is for American children because noone is making RPGs for them.
>>12656089They are, it's called all those other RPGs.
>>12656110Such as?
>>12653519Mystic Quest has some all-time banger OST material.
>>12656114All of them. If you can read you can play an RPG.
>>12656089Nobody was making RPGs for western children until FFMQ, but then Pokémon came around and did exactly that, but mostly a lot better and with far better marketing.FFMQ is an unironically very decent effort, but decent just isn't as good as great.>>12653936If you mean FFMQ, then that'd be very funny, but presumably you mean Wizardry, and your post only properly applies to Wizardry 4.
>>12653519I only hate it because we got it instead of FFV back in the day
>>12656114Are you... serious? Mystic Quest came out in NA after two proper Final Fantasy games and three Dragon Warrior games. FFII SNES and Dragon Warrior (1) especially were about as easy and accessible as Mystic Quest is.
