I just started playing this, really late to the party lol. What do you like about it? what made early internet debates between it and Ocarina of Time so intense?

They were both my favorite games and I never participated in the flame wars between the two factions, as I saw the homoerotic tension for what it was.
What I liked about FF7 was the graphics, the FMVs, the minigames, the hundreds of multiple choice scenarios and missable dialogue, and raising chocobos. if I were to play it again today I would probably spend most of my time raising chocobos and materia maxxing, whilst fast forwarding through the excessive random battles.
Ocarina of Time I just liked because it was an A Link to the Past/Link's Awakening style Zelda but in 3D. That was all I needed to love it. I'm less inclined to replay it these days though since the flow of the game will be more or less than same as my last runs, whereas FF7 at least lets me focus on trying different battle related setups.

drop it and play 8 instead

IDK, probably debating GOAT status I guess? Most people I know that liked one, liked the other as well. Peak gaming.

I liked it at the time. Only other jrpgs I played were nes dragon quest, chrono trigger and earthbound. I remember having a blank tape and hitting record anytime a cutscene played.
Now, I’ve really come to loathe RPGs with fully customizable parties. I feel like their class and skills should come from who they are as a character and not what gems I slot into sockets.

Slot the appropriate materia then

Spoken like a retarded faggot.
You get new characters through out the game, how am I suppose to know what to give Cid when I just met him?

It's an extremely solid JRPG with tons of small touches and incredible presentation, especially for the time. Materia system is awesome and the world and story grab people in ways no other FF has accomplished on such a wide scale. Will say that all of the minigames they shoved in suck ass though.

>what made early internet debates between it and Ocarina of Time so intense?
That one is just console warring, people only owned one console or the other and both were genuinely great games that redefined their respective genres with similar crowds they were appealing to. Only natural that people would get heated on which is "better" when they were, in the end, objectively missing out if they hadn't played both.

FF7 is the best of both worlds though. It has several predefined archetypes for the characters with unique limit breaks and stats, and then you can spec them out further to whatever you want to create either a specialized unit based on what they're already good at or even make a weird hybrid unit if you like.

You...go into Status and look at the numbers for what his affinities are without any materia equipped in order to figure out how to complement them. And contrary to the popular belief perpetuated by posters like (You) who claim every character is the same, each character DOES have affinities.

I played it nearly after launch as my first ever FF game,

did not know anything about the story or spoiler etc,and did not use a guide, and I was blown away.

never in my life I've ever been absorbed by a game like that, and still even,
ok perhaps because I was a kid, and the times were different, where you don't have 10000 things distracting you.

try to not use a guide for a first playthrough,
make lots of saves, you can beat this easy,

then after you beat it, read a guide for the post-end content

They poured a shitload of money into it. It was like the most expensive game ever made up to when it released, with an exorbitant marketing budget alone.

don't use a guide, play blind.
I played it at release, loved it, and it still holds up today as one of the best jrpgs of all time; i replay every few years and it's always good. Absolutely great plot, likeable and engaging characters, awesome music, good exploration, great pacing, unique aesthetic, and simple yet satisfying and effective combat. FF7 just does everything right.

Lol. It shouldn't take long to realize he ain't no mage or thief.

No one reads the stats screen.

It had some cool minigames which girls would play, back in the day.

I think they put those in hoping your girlfriend would play Pokemon racing. By FFX they had given up on the idea of video gamers having girlfriends - otherwise the minigame wouldn't have been so irritating and involved.

me and bro used to take turns competing for score in the snowboarding minigame, good times

It was a based game and for the time, it was jaw dropping. You could have seen those graphics in the arcade before, but not in the long-game format where you care about what happens.

PC gamers were less impressed, but it was still great and by what 1997 they caved and released a slightly enhanced PC version which I guess people still like today over the Playstation version. I've never played it but maybe I will some day.
