>TL;DR: Should I get a PS2 console or just go for the emulator?

I've been trying to collect some old games that I loved to play as a kid/teenager and I currently own a SNES console with a all-in-one cartridge.

I've been looking for some reconditioned PS2 consoles and I'm thinking on whether should I get a console and go for the external HD/discs option, or just emulate every game on my PC.

I just got a nice CRT TV for gaming, and I plan to use it for the PS2.

I imagine emulating might have some issues with graphics and glitches, but it's probably the most practical one. I imagine most PS2 controllers available are ass, so that's another issue for the console.

I've also been thinking on getting a Nintendo Wii and use the PS2 emulator on it, but I'm not sure about that yet.

emulation comes with input lag
get a real console
>>
>>12655917
Emulation is better in every conceivable way. Unless you're playing games on hypermaxx hard difficulty turbo mode, input lag is a non issue.
>>
If you have the income and physical space to keep the games you want I see no issues with buying a PS2, especially if you have a CRT for retro games. I have like 4 PS2 consoles and around 160 games but my apartment is very tiny so I have them at my dads place.

then whats the question?

are you serious?

Anon, the Wii doesn't have a PS2 emulator.
But regarding your question, get the console if it's not prohibitively expensive and you have the space. Most PS2 games don't benefit from increased resolutions and the input lag is noticeable in some instances.
>>
Emulators suck fucking ass, but if you have to even ask the question, you should stay away from consoles and leave them for the rest of us who appreciate them.

Download an emulator.

Plenty of sealed OEM ones on ebay.
Buy one from japan while you still can

I got it mixed up, sorry. I was thinking of the SNES/N64 emulator for Wii when I was considering getting a SNES or just a Wii with the 64 and SNES emulator.

Also, is the N64 emulator any good for the PS2 or Wii? That's a console that I'm probably gonna have a hard time finding for sale.

I didn't know about the input delay for the PC emulator.

I don't have a lot of room for all the gear right now, but I'm thinking ahead when I do, so I'd rather store them somewhere right now than struggle (even more) to find any piece of equipment in the future.

I'll also take a look on ebay for controllers. I hope they're not too pricey.
>>
Both. Buy a modded console that lets you play games off a harddrive.
>>
>>12655917
If you have a nice CRT than modding a fat PS2 seems worth it
>>
>>12655917
any OPL gurus know why some games don't show up at all? thought it was my ancient grimdoomer opl build, but it happens with modern mainline builds too.

Not a guru but I had that problem when the iso file names were too long. Retarded, I know. They have to be pretty short.

Dude, your OS has input lag before we even talk about emulators. Even if PCSX2 had 0 lag, you cannot avoid the compositor lag in win10/11 or wayland. Maybe if you're a supreme linux autist you might be able to strip a build of X11 so bare you get winxp era performance back, but no distro ships like that, so even if you're a die hard XLibre user, you're using the buffered laggy one same as wayland users.
I can't stress this enough to people under the age of 25 - gaming on PCs used to be better than this, and I'm sorry you think buying 360Hz monitors is a fix for bad OSs.

Player here who have played on PC then switched to real hardware and CRT tv.
Yes, PS2 games do look amazing on CRT, but I miss the QoL features and better framerate and graphics enhancements of the emulator.
I imagine that using a PC on a CRT TV with a converter would be the best approach possible.

The PS2 is the most fugly fucking piece of shit ever made. Why don't you get an original Xbox instead and play all the ports there? That's all PS2 fans really talk about anyway, the 2000 gaMeS meme is only pulled out when they want to win an argument.

buy a fat PS2, install an internal hard drive

>>12656034
Wrong
>>
>>12656229
ps2 OS also has input lag. It's just as fallible as any other. The emulator accounts for it and outputs in such a way so its not double counted

resident evil outbreak, genuine 10/10 game, I play it online every friday with homies.
the other is onimusha dawn of dreams
>>
If you can find a ps2 at a thrift store then go ahead. I dont know if the hard drive adapter thing is still needed for loading games, i assume not

Otherwise just use pcsx2 and a bluetooth dualshock or better yet, an xbox controller

>>
>>12655917
You're more likely to play the games if you have to sit down with a console to play them.
>>
>>12655917
If you have the specs then go for emulation, it's pretty good now days and you can do neat things. Now admittedly, I prefer playing some games on the console, Gran Turismo comes to mind.

It's not like a PS2 is expensive or difficult to mod, controllers are a bit of an issue, Sony didn't make them the most durable and repros are questionable. There's almost no reason to go with a slim model unless it's dirt cheap the hard drive option is too good for a modded console.
>>
>>12656229
>Wayland lag
Hahaha delusional faggot. X lost + actual PS2 hardware has input lag of its own.
>>
>>12655917
Are you using a CRT? Then get a PS2 or a PS3 Slim (yes, Slim). Otherwise, just use PCSX2.
>>
>>12656150
Huh, thought that was a limitation for the old HDD setups. And you'd think opl manager would have pointed that out for me when it was renaming the files.
Ta anon I'll have a fiddle after work see if that helps
