Childhood is playing long drawn out RPGs with turn based combat and tons of dialogue boxes

Adulthood is realizing shmups and bullet hells are the most gameplay dense genre and are able to pack all of it into a relatively short game that doesn't waste your time.
>>
for me it's the opposite. my eyes don't work as well and my reflexes are slower. give me an RPG where i can take things at my own pace.

i loaded up some 2hu a few weeks ago and my young adult self would laugh at what a plebeian secondary i have become ;_;

Today I started R-Type. Going for the 1-all.
I see why people call it a classic. The visuals and vibe is top notch. Especially for 1987. Level design is also better than expected. But level 6 is a real pain in the ass. Damn.

ty. Well anyways.

For an early 90s shmup, it's a very charming one for sure. Especially like the artstyle, music and the silly scenes. Gotta love how the first screen you see after the final boss is just Cotton standing like that and a huge glowing "WILLOW" textbox.
Gameplay-wise it's also not that bad at all, it's cool how you can use both spells in two different ways, and throw the fairies around, especially to do things like hitting an enemy behind a wall. A bit on the easy side, but not completely braindead, you gotta think a little how to deal with some sections even early on, like the 2nd stage boss, or manipulating 3rd stage midboss movements so you can hit it safely. Don't think I can judge it too fairly on difficulty since I'm used to much harder games(CAVE, Psikyo, Raizing), I don't expect anyone to shit out a no miss clear as their first 1cc.
I can certainly see why this series managed to survive for a while given it was unique enough for its own time(not the first cute 'em up, but still, how many even existed before '91?), but it's still crazy to me seeing it alive today. Reminder that one of them is coming in August, the devs must really love their cute witch.
>>
And whoever writes this wiki should really play the goddamn games. This is false, or maybe refers to only one specific version.

For the arcade version, actual extend rule is:
>1st 100,000
>then every 300,000
Based off my playthrough where I got 3 extends, at 100k, 400k and 700k.

they are fast but there's way less. just look at the top of the screen and know which enemies shoot what
>>
>>12670697
>they are fast but there's way less
Is this a larp? there is not less bullets in mushi original than at any point in hard eosd, and additionally the density of bullets is pretty much meaningless as in either situation you are focusing lanes and streaming anyways. faster bullets simply necessitate stronger fundamentals, and in harder bullet hell games those fundamentals will be necessary because the walls will quickly close in on you anyways.
>>
>>12670712
didnt play eosd, only played infinite night. bullets fill up the entire screen. my takeaway from mushi was that dps matters and its important to kill the most troublesome shit first. all of the enemy attacks can be reduced to a binary "do i stay still or dodge slightly"
>>
>>12670724
>bullets fill up the entire screen
This also happens in stages 3-5 in mushi original.
>only played infinite night
>dps matters and its important to kill the most troublesome shit first
Imperishable Night also demands aggression, several enemies even bullet cancel. It's pretty much just a really shitty cave knock off. What seperate mushi from standard cave games is trailing (gradius) options, which are crucially important in later stages, and in futari especially they start throwing in banana peels like stationary ground enemies that fire in strict directionals rather than directly on your position. There's pretty much nothing in touhou like the spiders in stage 5 mushi original. Someone who has only played touhou is not going to understand how to deal with them, and the difficulty chart on the wiki ranks games based on knowledge and execution required, not time to complete. A very easy game can take a long time to complete because it is very routing reliant, but anyone could clear it given the time to do so.
>>
>>12670739
>This also happens in stages 3-5 in mushi original.
stage 3 is just tap dodge spam and getting lucky. stage 4 is knowing where to camp the snakes. stage 5 is one of the greatest stages of all time desu
>the difficulty chart on the wiki ranks games based on knowledge and execution required, not time to complete. A very easy game can take a long time to complete because it is very routing reliant, but anyone could clear it given the time to do so.
I've been progressing up the tier list, got clears in 15 16 and 17 already. for me each clear is shorter than the last even though the game is harder, because i got better. and got better at getting better
>>
>>12670756
>stage 3 is just tap dodge spam and getting lucky
No? There are precise ways to do everything in that stage, the zako swarm on the main body shouldn't be a coin flip, there is a very specific way to do that. Similiarly all the wasp things shoot in very specific directions.
>for me each clear is shorter than the last even though the game is harder, because i got better. and got better at getting better
Time to play DOJ and ketsui and dispel that myth. There is always something that will humble you. Even after the hardest of the hard clears there is scoring, which is infinitely harder because everything truly has to be done perfectly.
>>
>>12670739
How do I deal with the bullet speed in Mushi, I am just not fast enough. I managed to beat Novice-original, got to the last boss on novice-maniac but choked and got to the last stage on normal-original and died to big beetles.
>>
>>12670771
>No? There are precise ways to do everything in that stage, the zako swarm on the main body shouldn't be a coin flip, there is a very specific way to do that. Similiarly all the wasp things shoot in very specific directions.
probably, but it felt like luck. By the time I got the clear it was the make or break part of my run. I could consistently get the 1up
>Time to play DOJ and ketsui and dispel that myth. There is always something that will humble you. Even after the hardest of the hard clears there is scoring, which is infinitely harder because everything truly has to be done perfectly.
we'll see if there's a plateau. rtype feels like a noticeable step up in difficulty but i think it can be brute force memo'd. it's my first time playing a slow paced dadshit hori so we'll see. watched a single play thru and went through each stage once so far. the only thing that seems like it will take some hours is stage 6. never had to control around obstacles like that before

i feel kind of cocky because my gunbird 1-all came fast and when i was looking up vods all of the people who were getting the 1-all were visibly worse than me. one guy on comms talked about how it took him a year to get it but it only took me like 10 days. and then after that i booted up deathsmiles ii and did a couple of rounds of arcade mode, switched to x mode and got a clear on my first try
>>
>>12670795
if you're getting to the last stage you have what it takes. just grind the last stage exclusively. your playtime playing the last stage should be equal to all of the stages before it combined imo
know the enemies and either kill them before they shoot or be ready for their bullet patterns
>>
>>12670812
I assume if I die and lose formation (too slow to pick up or cockblocked) It is automatic loss as I lose my dps?
>>
>>12670795
>How do I deal with the bullet speed in Mushi, I am just not fast enough
Get used to not looking at your ship. Since many bullets are aimed you typically don't want to be threading the needle. It suffices to to see the bullets come out of an enemy then react to it then. Reference replays to look at how people move, there's a lot of tracing enemies, cutbacks and restreams that you can trivialize. Bomb everything. Bomb the crossover for the extra extend. Bomb the final stage 3 boss pattern. Bomb the stage 4 midboss on his jizz rope pattern. Bomb the final stage 4 boss pattern. Bomb the stage 5 midboss final pattern. Bomb the zerg rush before the final boss. Bomb the stage 5 boss final pattern. That's 7 bombs to remove every major kill point in the mode. Since your goal isnt a nomiss, and theres no penalty for dying, you can spend all that guilt free. You have about 30 resources in total to work with. You're also probably better off asking on /v/.
>>
>>12670817
nah this isnt dadshit. you have enough iframes to pick it up.
>>
>>12670826
adding onto this, for bullet hell STGs that have a visible hitbox, using the hitbox indicator to dodge is almost always a beginner's trap. you never need the indicator except in the most over the top high-density slow-bullet touhou style patterns. You generally just want to look somewhere between your ship and the top part of the screen, looking lower or higher based on how fast/dense whatever you are dodging is. hitbox indicators condition you to look way too close to your ship and rely too much on visually confirming that a bullet didn't hit you, rather than getting a feel for how much to move to avoid a bullet based on where you can see yourself in your peripheral vision.
>>
>>12670806
>Gunbird 1-all

Also very similar play, as in, no miss'd most of the game except dying once at the very end(final boss iirc).

Deathsmiles has variable difficulty, you can choose the rank before each stage. If you stick to Lv1 it's amongst the easiest CAVE games.
Cotton Reboot is likely to be the easiest of the bunch there, it includes both the game with modern mechanics and the X68000 as far I'm aware. In gameplay terms, the latter is better - modern mechanics missed the appeal of the original imo.
I don't know about Devil Blade reboot.

>Guess we'll never know.

>>12672138
>Excuse me? What's wrong with those games
So basically Devil Blade is a poorly designed game you can beat in a couple hours, and cotton is a game you can beat without trying because it is entirely a scoring game. (It's also a subpar port) Comparatively deathsmiles is something that will take hundreds of hours to get through all the modes, and has a more robust scoring system than the other 2 games to boot. Which is kind of why asking for which game is "easy" is a bad question, because a shmup you can just tear through is pretty boring, and honestly a rip off. No shmup is designed to only be beatable by experts, and there is no shmup on steam that a beginner cannot clear, so may as well just play the actual good games instead of working your way up through low effort kusoge.
>>
>>12672224
Easy to "beat" doesn't mean badly designed or low effort. Also I've said it last time in a different thread, but the whole "beating the game" is a console game paradigm, retroactively applied by people who probably didn't grow up in the actual arcade days.
>>
>>12672235
>the whole "beating the game" is a console game paradigm, retroactively applied by people who probably didn't grow up in the actual arcade days.

>>

>>12672241
The score chasing in devil blade and cotton is bad. The people in these threads are not scoring cotton at all. Don't pretend this is something it's not.
>>
>>12672246
>The score chasing in devil blade and cotton is bad.
That's like, your opinion bro.
You aren't scoring shit either, so I'm not sure what's your point here. I know it's not my point, either way. The only question should be whether the game is fun to play, enough that somebody would consider any goal, including survival runs, score runs, or a mix of both.
Personally I think you can get that out of both Deathsmiles and Cotton, and I haven't played Devil Blade so I can't tell you about it.
>>
>>12672224
That's fine to me. I'd rather clear the easy games and get all the achievements and have a fun short experience, then move on to the more in-depth ones like death smiles
>>
>>12672259
Personally, if Cotton was the first shmup I ever played, I would have thought shmups are dumb and never played them ever again.
>>
>>12672279
Guess I'm not young enough to understand this sentiment. My choice of first shmups was limited to games made around the 80s, something like Cotton looks, sounds and plays better than most of those. Unfortunately, it's not a game I ever saw in a IRL cab, only learned about it in the 2000s with the internet.
And I still have no idea which game was even my first, but likely something released in the 80s. For one I know I have played Galaga at some point, and it felt like I had seen Gradius before but can't quite remember.

Except that gameplay is boring and mindless. This is an autists interpretation of gaming, that isn't even true, since gameplay is just you...playing the game. Which you do with RPG's just as much as with a bullet hell game. It's just different gameplay.

I don't find bullet hell games entertaining. If you're a toddler with low thought processes who finds flashy graphics and fast moving objects entertaining, I'm sure you'll have a blast though.

A shmup master can beat any game
A jarpig master can't beat an easy shmup
>>
>>12673790
I can confirm. I am a shmup master and I've beaten off to every genre.
>>
>>12673790
Can you stream your shmup gameplay and show us how a master plays?
>>
>>12674509
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAzODNDcEnQ

the most shmup video/song i've ever seen that isn't about a shmup
>>
>>12674513
Wut? I just asked you for a stream, I'm shit at shmups but there's so many good players on /vr/ that I want to see how an expert plays
>>
>>12674528
and I sent you a cool remix, take what you can get.

more realistically, i would stream for you gladly but by the time I'm up to do that this thread will be fucking dead. if you want some shmup advice just ask me instead and I'll give you real advice instead of bullshit, promise. you can be as vague or specific as you want.
>>
how do I survie the Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu spinning lasers at the last stage, literally end my every run
>>
>>12675462
Well basically you don't.
Try to keep refilling your hyper and make sure you are using manual bombs instead of auto bombs, the former lasts way more time.
>>
>>12675465
so If I don't have enough bombs/lives I am fucked, got it
>>
>>12675468
To be fair it's the only part where you even need them.
>>
>>12675473
idk I don't know the optimal places for hyper so I die a lot
>>
>>12675462
https://youtu.be/WRGIr8f4dM4?t=1609

Trying to fully copy scoring strats can be an easy way to ruin one's fun, but what you can do, is see exactly how they deal with these annoying laser wheels and try similar stuff.
>>
>>12675556
well the wheels by themselves would be managable, it's just all the other shit that's shooting 6 jewillion bullets ruins it for me
>>
>>12672831
I'm glad I'm not like the guy in this webm.
>>
>>12675561
as long as you're in hyper state, the game's basically a fake ikaruga where you just cancel all the shots and swap to laser only when you need to. so if we assume hyper is basically godmode (it is), it just becomes a question of "when should I best be in normal mode"
>>
>>12675784
There's a hyper rank. If you use it too much, it will stop cancelling bullets. iirc beating a stage lowers the rank again.
>>
dodonpachi series is goated

are there any shmups like zero ranger? it's the only one i like
>>
>>12677827
ZR blatantly steals from a lot of games (not a bad thing), here are some of the cooler ones you can check out.

Cho Ren Sha, Aleste series (I suggest super), Judgement Silversword & Eschatos, Radiant Silvergun, Hellsinker.

Honorable mention to Geppy X, Brave Blade and Megaman Zero (totally a shmup).
>>
This thread is very bad. What seperates this thread from the /v/ threads?
>>
>>12678921
/v/ threads can become good at times.
/vr/ is always fucked because no one plays shit here.

No no no. No fuck you. RPG gamers are a blight to society. RPG games have little to no depth at all except for its storytelling.

Pokemon alone is 100 times more complex than your repeat the stage the same way each time shmups

But wouldn't that mean everyone that has been in this thread is the problem
>>
Why are shmups so often pitted against turn-based (J)RPGs? If anything playing shmups ruined other types of real-time games for me.
>>
>>12680064
Man you don't even want to know. This autism has existed on this board for literally over a decade. And it used to be a single shitposter (the jarpig schizo) but at this point I think it might be a "retards thinking they're in good company" type of situation

>>12680237
I'm not the one posting onimai and don't even come to /vr/ most of the time, you got the wrong anon.
>>
>>12680240
I'm looking right at the thread now and its just a wall of the posts you've made 300+ times already. You're like the Chris-chan of shmups. I think you might have an actual mental disability.
>>
>>12680242
Think you are mixing multiple anons together
>>

No I'm definitely not. It's you and one shitposter who doesn't even play shmups encouraging you because he knows it derails the threads.

>>12680247
>No I'm definitely not.
Ok schizo
>>
>>12680248
Ever notice how time isn't moving forward for you and you keep discussing things over and over while everyone else is moving forward and clearing more games? It's just you and a shitposter egging you on to hurt discussion.
>>
>>12680249
How about you keep down the schizo ramblings and post what you're playing instead? You aren't helping with discussion here.

Looks cool actually. Reminds me I've played something in the same style(top-down view, manually scrolling up, shooting stuff) many years ago but I can't remember the name. It's not an arcade game tho

He's also turned to the /v/ thread into that. It's just replying to the same retarded low effort bait posts over and over. It hasn't had a single decent post in the last 8 hours.

>Thought Cotton was a nice & friendly SHMUP where the skill came from scoring rather than survival
>That damn dragon destroys me every time
Great OST btw
>>
>>12681063
Original Cotton there barely has any real scoring mechanics, think the biggest difference you can make is getting the secret bonus for dodging the tea items at the end of a stage instead of collecting them, but it's true for the non-/vr/ ones.
But it's an easy game either way, st6 boss can be done very easily if you play it slow and dodge in the right/up corner until he returns back to the rightmost position
>>
Also yes, the OST is great

This one is the same as the arcade, but the remixes are cool too.

idk what you're talking about, I've been listening to this stuff for weeks now(including the other versions)
