We're you able to get retro games from Japan before collector youtubers ruined the market?
>>
Buy an ad, shave your face.
Retro games are free.
>>
>>12671213
yeah. i got a sega saturn in the box for like $15. in 2020
>>
>>12671213
Yeah. And I hate you all for ruining it.
>>
You still can get great deals, just not in the tourist areas. Go out into the residential suburbs where you wont see any other whito piggu collectors.
>>
I love Japan as much as the next guy but even I'm annoyed at this thing japan shit
Photography is rife with it
>japanese camera i bought from japan using japanese film photos in japan japan
>>
>go to sendai
>shop cheap game stores tourists never go to
>tour beer brewery and get drunk
>enjoy 90% of the same experiences at a slower pace
Cozy trip. Tokyo focused cattle deserve to be gouged.

I like physical media but retro games are free. If I can grab a physical copy of a game I like for a reasonable price, great, if not, it's not like I can't play the game as long as I have a working hardware. I love my GBA and my GBA cartridges but it's not like I don't use open_agb_firm on my New 3DS XL these days, it's just more convenient to boot ROMs directly without using my cartridges. They're just a nice, nostalgic collector's item, nothing more.

I was never a gay ass weeb sucking off imports.
Fuck you consumer wannabe otaku faggots and your screenshot shelves and Youtube subscriptions to faggots monetizing plastic in an algorithmic wasteland of hyperreality and cultural detritus.

I rmebwr picking up a few Japanese super Nintendo games back in the day since they were so much cheaper, just the games that you didn't need to know Japanese to play. Even picked up one of those hori N64 controllers.

Pretty soon Japan's going to ban selling games to foreigners.

True for the janny

My first trip to japan in 2022 was right after the coof restrictions got lifted. I saw a lot of cheap retro games, shit like Chrono Trigger for 1000 yen. I even picked up some great limited edition gunpla and other rare anime stuff for much cheaper than back at home.

It's nothing like that anymore. Not sure why Japan is so popular with normies now.
>>
>>12671213
raiding foreign markets for your own 5 seconds of euphoria until the game rots in a drawer or shelf is absolute tin pot behaviour.
>>
>>12675724
Anime became trendy during Covid.
>>
>>12675724
>Not sure why Japan is so popular with normies now.
The JPY is dirt cheap, so for any first-worlder it's cheaper to travel to Japan (flight aside) than to travel around their own country, and far too many "influencers" have capitalized on that.
>>
>>12671267
It isn't Japan's fault everyone else has inferior hardware, their software is shit but their hardware is nice, even as a piece of furniture
>>
>>12675804
Insane. I remember being called Naruto fag in 2007.
Still doesn't explain why retro games have gotten so much more expensive there.
>>
>>12675816
it's not from economics. it's astroturfed from social media marketing campaigns. certain countries spend billions in dollars to try to get tourists to go there. India is way cheaper than Japan but no one wants to go there because of their social media image. Taiwan and Korea are also the same thing as Japan and slightly cheaper.
>>
I guess. I first visited in 2014 and moved here (to Japan) in 2017.
But I never was too into collecting physical stuff.
>>
It's nevee been so over.
Zoomers like retro games too it's not just a millennial thing.
If Gen A also get into retro it will be over over
>>
The rise of retro collecting in general is a side effect of normalfags increasingly integrating themselves into online communities which were shaped by the turbonerds of the mid-2000s and before. It's why you get retarded shit like normalfags clutching their pearls and moralfagging over loli porn and other shit that they barely would have ever seen before said integration, or why the same people who did not give two shits about old videogames 15 years ago are now spending hundreds to rebuy the same kind of shit they would have previously donated to Goodwill. 15 years ago roasties would have laughed at guys for going to Japan to buy old games, now there's probably plenty of them in this guy's viewerbase, oohing and aahing over whatever limited edition Pokemon crap he blew a few grand on.

Culture is shaped by the unemployed. When DEI happened a whole bunch of white people became unemployed and shaped modern normie culture as we know it. All of the young gen alpha age 18-25 speak the exact same as a /pol/ wignat from 15 years ago. It's jarring to see a young black girl talk like a skinhead from prison but it is what it is.
>>
I still find games I want whenever I visit, though the stuff I like is still dirt cheap.
>>
no i just emulate like a normal person
>>
I remember buying the SFC carts for Star Fox, Yoshi's Island, and Super Metroid for like $10 total off ebay just like 8 years ago or so.

Super Metroid in particular is a steal with its SFC cart because it is literally the same game that we got in the US, as both have Japanese and English text as an option. So you can buy the SNES cart for 10x the price or...

Am I missing something? What are you all going on about? Nothing's changed whatsoever. Console games are everywhere and extremely cheap. PC games are rarer and more expensive. If anything, it's better now than it was in the past since the yen is in the shitter. Yeah, expensive games exist. If you want a copy of Metal Slader Glory, you're going to have to shell out a lot of money. But that's not new.

>The rise of retro collecting in general is a side effect of normalfags increasingly integrating themselves into online communities which were shaped by the turbonerds of the mid-2000s and before.
You are a good poster.

It's hard to tell if being a millennial nerd is a good or bad thing. It's like we made a monkey's paw wish for geek to become popular and just ruined the entire thing.
>>
The two worst things to happen to retro gaming:
1. Collector's who don't understand Japanese buying up Japanese game stock. Fuck off some of us learned/are learning Japanese to play those games.
2. People who buy the rare and very few existing development kits just to have them. Some of us want to actually make real retro games.
>>
>>12678269
When's the last time you went to a Mandarake? I know it's the most well known normie accesible retro shop, that's why it's a great example.

>moralfagging
It's so bizarre to see moralfagging on skimpily dressed women in videogames post-00s. It was a market compromised mostly of under-sexed nerds, I mean fucking hell, it's why they introduced Seven of Nine into Voyager.

And now it's this insane culture war thing because the minds of modern day (actual) nerds have been shattered. It's like, if this was 20 years ago, dudebros would have been laughing at you for having hentai.
>>
>>12671213
I guess. I've been living here for 12 years but honestly I never bought any retro game. Roms are free.

You're supposed to think Akiba is completely dead and all hope for Japan is lost because Super Potato sold out to the tourists or because some gaijin found a big ramen shop that went out of business or something. Nothing is ever allowed to change or go out of business in Japan or IT'S SO OVER!

Nevermind the fact that Junk Street is still mostly fine, and Hard-Off has a wall of yellow Sega Saturns, it's all over because some of the stores have a wall of shonen figures or Game Boy Colors or Pokemon carts at the front of the store to milk the tourists.
>>
>>12671213
>Start making videos showing where to get the best deals
>Scalping cunts swarm like locusts
>How could this have possibly happened?

Retro youtubers are emphatically their own worst enemies.
>>
>>12680636
>Super Potato
That was a disgustingly overpriced shop I went to. The prices are so high that buying off ebay is a better choice because at least then you can rip off the seller instead of the other way round.
>>
>>12680798
In a way, but at the end of the day, the YouTuber survives on content. Japan has a bunch of cheap cool things? Make a video advertising it, and it gets views, so you grow your viewerbase and make more money. Oh no, now buying cool old games in Japan has become a fad, thanks in part to your videos, so now selection is drying up and prices are skyrocketing! Make a video showing this new reality and you crying about it, people who are curious or similarly upset about this topic watch your video, so it gets views, your viewerbase grows, and you make more money.
>>
>>12678262
>being a customer at Hard Off is bothering people
>>
>>12680798
>Retro youtubers
How many of them were ever genuine people and not faggot grifters jumping on a bandwagon?
>>
>>12682343
I'd imagine a lot are genuine, but once you make YouTubing about it a career, you start to have other motives. As I mentioned above, whatever happens to the retro market, it is in their best interest to keep making videos and generating profit. Not to mention that for a lot of specific games or retro tech, they're making videos about a thing they already own, so even if they know that the price might double overnight as a result of their video, it doesn't negatively impact their ability to obtain the thing, and if they plan to sell, it's actually to their benefit.
And, if you want to get overly conspiratorial about it, surging retro prices actually helps their channels, by making more of the stuff they cover out of the price range of plebs; maybe five years ago a poorfag could've bought some rare old thing and enjoyed it themselves, but now that it's a R@RE collectible worth a grand, the only way they can hope to enjoy it is vicariously through YouTuber productions.
>>
>>12677897
18-25 year old people aren't gen alpha, they're zoomers. Gen Alpha are people born in 2010 and later.
>>
>>12682343
>How many of them were ever genuine people
none of them. every single person i've ever seen on that site has been a faggot grifter

Gamesack and Happy Console Gamer are really all i can remember that wasn't trying to be an "angry critic" or something like metaljesus who you know is running a scalper ring and artificially pumping the numbers.
>>
>>12682594
>Gamesack
I've only seen a couple of his videos but he seems like a genuine "retro" gamer.

But holy shit, there's been a glut of new "girl gamers", none of whom could have been alive for anything other than the PS3 making "retro" videos. They're even making the same kind of "end of retro" gaming videos.

It's funny to think that some of them, if not most, are daughters of the kind of late Gen X/millennial girl who mocked the type of nerdy guys who were hardcore into anime and videogames back in the 90s/early 2000s. Have to wonder if the daughters realize this, or if their mothers recognize that the stupid Japanese cartoon with the blue short-haired girl that their daughters are buying figurines from, is the same show that the fat guy they mocked 25 years ago was jerking off to back then.
