1. Umbrella appears to have been much less widely known and more localized in Raccoon City and its immediate surroundings. Chris has never even heard of them until that night.2. Oswald Spencer and the Trevor family are absent from the story, making the mansion's background and history unknown.3. According the manual, STARS are a nation-wide organisation with a branch in Raccoon City. A lot of the members aren't even from there and have been stationed there very recently.4. The outbreak is never framed as anything other than an accident that was taken advantage of.5. Raccoon City itself is depicted as a modern metropolis in one of the end screens, going against the small midwestern town aesthetic.6. Wesker is just a regular dude working for Umbrella and it is clear that his death was supposed to be final at the end of the game. He was retconned into surviving starting with CV onward.7. There is mention of Blue Umbrella that gave the operation orders to Wesker following the accident. This "Blue Umbrella" was completely forgoten and never elaborated upon. There is one in RE7 with the same name I think, but this has nothing to do with the one from RE1.
>>12671490All correct except for 7 that I've never heard about. And here is two more:8. In the original game there is zero evidence that bites transmit the virus, quite the contrary in fact. It was airborne transmission only effective for a few days. RE2 retconned that in the first few minutes with the Will Smith character. It's also arguable whether Director's Cut rectonned that with Forest turning into a zombie after his crow bites... the virus may still have been active when Bravo got the mansion, which brings me to the next point9. iirc the delay between the moment Bravo and Alpha team got to the mansion was shortened in RE0 though I couldn't tell you where that's stated from the top of my head.and if we bring RE0 into the mix there also the whole affair about how it's supposed to be the 0 villain that started the whole incident which obviously is unheard of in 1.
>>12671490>3. According the manual, STARS are a nation-wide organisation with a branch in Raccoon City. A lot of the members aren't even from there and have been stationed there very recently.Yes, even in the intro it says "STARS were sent to Racoon City". STARS sounds more akin to the ATF - an interstate police agency. For some reason, with 2 onwards they make it like STARS were always in Racoon city. This is made absurd when you see their office, which has desks for Wesker, Chris, Jill, and Rebecca. ie the people who survived (though Wesker was believed dead). What was their office beforehand? From a marketing standpoint, this is bad since STARS are cool and they have yet to come up with anything as good in over 30 years.
>>12671501I made a mistake, it's WHITE Umbrella, not blue:ORDERSTOP SECRET July 22, 1998 2:13To the Head of the Security Department"X-day" is approaching.Complete the following orders within the week.Lure the members of S.T.A.R.S. into the lab and have them fight with the B.O.W. in order to obtain data of actual battles.Collect two embryos per B.O.W. type making sure to include all species except for Tyrant.Destroy the Arkley lab including all researchers and lab animals in a manner which will seem accidental.White Umbrella>>12671509If I actually read the manual without any prior knowledge, I would have assumed that there was no STARS branch at all in RC before the murders started to make headlines, only being sent there in force to assist the RPD. Only Wesker and Joseph were natives.>For some reason, with 2 onwards they make it like STARS were always in Racoon city. This is made absurd when you see their office, which has desks for Wesker, Chris, Jill, and Rebecca. ie the people who survived (though Wesker was believed dead). What was their office beforehand?I'VE NEVER THOUGH OF THIS BEFORE. It could be explainded that after the incident the survivors were give their own space in the office, that was a repurposed office space or something.
>>12671535>after the incident the survivors were give their own space in the officeWesker has a desk.RE2 also makes it look like they answer to Chief Rons, which is a MAJOR downgrade of what STARS are. It's like they go from state special forces to city police sub-team.
>>12671535There's 12 members and two teams, and those alone would be enough to take up most of the RPD that we see in 2. You can hand-wave, that they have a base of their own somewhere, whatever. But it is clear that RE1 never intended RC to be the home of STARS and they're like the ATF. 2 and 3 decively says they'er from the city and then kill them off. There's even a photo with the caption "the end of STARS".And the meta for the RE series is that they've been spinning their wheels with no idea what to do since RE2 in god damn 1998. The games keep selling but they lack any kind of coherent narrative or know where to go, so they keep going in circles. Functionally nothing has really happened, and I guess Wesker being dead? But then they keep walking that back. They made BSAA, which are like a lamer more forgettable stars with a Tacticool look akin to 2000's iraq war soldiers.
>>12671553RC was retconned into being a small midwestern town instead a modern, bustling metropolis as seen in some of the end screems. It would make sense that such a city would have its own special force, but a little mountain town of a 100 000 people? Makes you wonder what kind of crimes such a small place would have to be dealing with to warrant the creation of such an elite unit within its police force.
>>12671554I like Re2 and 3, but the it's obvious that they were making it up as the went along. I'm gonna keep this original lore in mind when replaying the original Re1 next time, pretending that nothing else exists in my head.
>>12671553Correct, and it raises all these stupid questiosn like why does a small town have this ultra-elite SWAT team with two helicopters, a grenade launcher, and an anti-tank Rocket launcher? Then they have to make MORE retcons and say that Umbrella was funding them, etc. Why not just go with the straight forward answer that is apparent in 1 that they're an inter-state agency? My thinking is that since the writer of 1 left, it was given to others and they may simply have not understood the background and the story. If you're working on a game you have a million things to worry about, and just because you work with Capcom, perhaps worked on RE1 in some capacity, and then answer to Shinji Mikami, it doesn't mean you remember all the details from RE1. I know RE2 was given to new writers, and it simply looks like they misunderstood what STARS was, and Mikami as producer didn't correct them or possibly didn't even notice it. STARS are still talked about this to this day, even if ostensibly they're only in 1-2 games, and the rest are just a few straggling STARS survivors. No one gives two shits about BSAA - a faceless organization with generic grunts. STARS have unique designs, unique skill sets, and they stand out. Back when character designs were meant to "pop" rather than make sense from a realistic stand point. It's why all the STARS are visually unique.
>>12671563Theh could have kept STARS as a national organisation and still made 2 and 3 work. Just make the STARS not answer to Irons and have Jill stay in RC of her own accord to investigate the matter further.
>>12671560I made notice of this even at the time.>RE2Leon and Claire waltz into town none the wiser, and find it infested with zombies. The early survivor says it happened suddenly. >RE3Now we learn that the entire town is cordoned off by the military, with dates explicitly saying this happened before Leon and Claire show up. So how were they able to get through the army check-points? They could have easily set the game after RE2, but instead set it 24 hours beforehnad, then Jill goes into a coma, then 24 hours afterwards for some baffling reason. Capcom keeps making twisted convoluted lore and then they contradict each other needlessly. Likely because there's no singular author and it's made up as they go.
>>12671565>have Jill stay in RC of her own accord to investigate the matter furtherPossibly with the blessing of the STARS higher ups who suspect that chief Irons is a little fishy. Could have her even be ordered by STARS to stay in Raccoon for this very purpose.
>>12671560>>12671554Yep, precisely. I'm glad other people realize this because this is never brought in discussions of RE2. I guess it's what happens when a sequel becomes more popular than the original, the bullshit become accepted and never questionned.>>12671563One thing I notice about sequels that have different directors/writers and who are forced to re-use some pieces of story or characters, is that they often highlight their OCs and diminish the original characters. Portraying STARS as failures is a way to try and force the new characters as the alternatives, see also the ending of RE2 "it's up to US to take down Umbrella!", like they're even trying to force the sequels to be about their OC.You can see it in Dino Crisis 2 as well, the story is entirely about the new OC, they just didn't care about Regina; and just like RE2, the ending is trying to force a potential sequel to continue their story. It's either that or change the character they are forced to re-use to the point they're basically a different character (Claire in CV, Leon in RE4). Thankfully only Jill in RE3 is exempt as her evolution and arc feel natural and the story is actually about her.
>>12671567>Leon and Claire waltz into town none the wiser, and find it infested with zombies. The early survivor says it happened suddenlyThay could have kept the og 1.5 Leon. An officer already in RC before the outbreak who then tries to survive and escape the cordoned off city. Just make him not a newcomer instead an established officer in the city.
>>12671570>it's up to US to take down UmbrellaFunny how Re2's ending and 3's epilogues all hint at a final, converging confrontation with Umbrella, featuring all the main characters. Then umbrella dies off screen due to a business embargo (lol) and the series mutates into something else.
>>12671565Yes, there's a multitude of simple straight forward answers. RE2:>With the mansion blown up, there were few traces left to confirm Jill, Chris, Rebecca, and Barry's claims of what happened. Pending a lingering investigation, Chris and Jill resign from STARS with Chris going to Europe to investigate another Umbrella branch and Jill staying in town. Meanwhile, Chris cuts contact with his family, prompting his sister to become concerned and new police recruits are sent to the town. RE3:>A week after the events of RE2, the city has hit an apocalyptic climax, and Jill Valentine has decided enough she has to escape. Her initial plan was to hunker down and help find survivors, but their supplies are low and they have scattered. She hears over the radio that the army has closed off the town and quarantined it, shooting anyone who tries to escape. She hopes that Brad, Rebecca, and Barry, were able to make it out. She hears a broadcast on the civillian radio, from a new military team who are coming to the town to save survivors. They are dropping helicopters in key points and telling people to go there. These are the Umbrella army guys. Their rescue attempts fall apart and it descend Bam, I just fixed both games. RE3 is initially Jill trying to get out and reconnect with survivors and then trying to get to the Umbrella army guys. And it's set explicitly after RE2 so to explain why it's now under siege by the army, when Claire and Leon could just walk into town on clear open roads. In Re2 it was a fast apocalypse, and the army now has time to respond formally. Since everything is closed off the few survivors need to find an alternative exit. I always thought NEMESIS was fucking lame, since it's clear sequel escalation whereas a normal tyrant would make more sense.
>>12671570>One thing I notice about sequels that have different directors/writers and who are forced to re-use some pieces of story or characters, is that they often highlight their OCs and diminish the original characters. Portraying STARS as failures is a way to try and force the new characters as the alternatives, see also the ending of RE2 "it's up to US to take down Umbrella!", like they're even trying to force the sequels to be about their OC.and to continue with that logic, turning STARS from elite state quad to a sub group of a city police, is also a way to place Leon on an equal footing.I don't buy the "they didn't know what they were doing" theory, for me, it's all intentional. They had to try to make sure the audiance wouldn't miss the original characters.
>>12671570>Yep, precisely. I'm glad other people realize this because this is never brought in discussions of RE2. I guess it's what happens when a sequel becomes more popular than the original, the bullshit become accepted and never questionned.Correct. You have to use some level of skepticism about the series, since after multiple sequels "everyone knows" this or that. Then just blank your mind, look at the first game, and then look at what the first game says and what conclusions we can draw from it. For instance, RE2 makes it explicit that bites spread the virus. Yet in RE1 and 2, the player is bitten and nothing happens. But nothing in RE1 tells us how the virus was transmitted. The sequel creates a plot hole for seemingly little reason! The new writing team for RE2 likely just didn't understand all these things. It's notable that the second RE gets a new writer, all these little changes start. It's entirely possible these questions just were not asked by the team, who are struggling with making a new game and have a million more important things to worry about at the time other than where STARS come from.
>>12671574That's because of the real world sales of the series. RE:CV and RE:0 was the nadir of the series, with the games experiencing a slump in sales, and reviewers and players remarking how its a lot of "here we go again". Mikami talks about how RE1 Remake didn't sell that well, so they decided to go into a new more action focused direction for RE4. RE4 and CV were most likely the games meant to take down Umbrella and end the Umbrella story arc for the series: >Leon and Claire all run off to Europe to fight umbrella. Note how RE:CV and RE4 are both them going to Europe, fucking around with strange sociopathic European aristocrats in European castles. "Osmund Saddler" is very close Umbrella head Oswell E. Spencer. Ramon Salazar, was most likely another Saddler. In fact, many new players to RE4 get their names mixed up since Saddler and Salazar sound similar. It's possible CV and RE4 are Scenario A and Scenario B from the same game about taking down Umbrella that were split up into two games. It's possible Ashley was originally Sherry, and Ashley's very child like teenager attitude and design would make WAY more sense. Sherry would be around 15/16 which explains why Ashley looks and behaves like a high schooler rather than the uni girl she is. So RE4 is most likely a scenario about taking down Umbrella that they hastily exercised Umbrella from part way through, but didn't change the contents of the story just changed names around. Re4's story makes more sense when you understand the real world back story.
>>12671602>But nothing in RE1 tells us how the virus was transmitted. The sequel creates a plot hole for seemingly little reason! If you check the Keeper's Diary, it's heavily implied that it's airborne. They wear hazmat suits and he turns while never saying he was bit.https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/198454-resident-evil/faqs/59055#section20
>>12671614While interesting, I think your theory is a big reach. I think CV and another companion game were supposed to close the series with the Umbrella confrontation. Re4 was not one of those two games, instead being a reskin of a completely different game, while the actual second game in the finale was scrapped.
>>12671625Oh yeah, that definitely goes against the bite transmission that Re2 goes for. But it keeps it a tad vague. The line where the superior says they don't need HAZMAT suits anymore is eerie since I see it as him going "we're all infected and it's too late so no bother trying."I heard some ideas that it was transmitted through the water supply, and that the virus has a time period of infection and then it stops being infectious. This would imply some kind of air or water transmission, where it ceases to be a bio-terror threat, while these lurking monsters are still a threat. It would explain how Racoon city was taken out so fast.>>12671580>>12671570Likewise, you can see the destruction of Racoon City as an attempt to clear the slate and make a soft-reboot to the canon and cast. RE was about a mansion in the Arklay Mountains of Racoon City. Boom. Racoon City, STARS, and anything associated with it are gone.

>>12671645*gets shafted by hack fraud mikami who takes all the credit and shoehorns in his stupid bullshit into the stories of the sequels without you to tard wrangle him*
>>12671649Fun fact:All the stupid bullshit in the REmake lile the trevor family and spooky gothic haunted house shit are the result of Mikami. Everything good about that game was already done in the original by Iwao.
>>12671649>>12671656I like Mikami and say he has a lot of talent, but creating grounded scenarios is not one of them. Left to his own devices, as we see with RE1 Remake, God Hand, RE4, and other games, is he likes wacky and over the top stories with a lot of irony and humor. There are times in RE4 where Leon or Saddler might as well turn to the camera and wink at the audience to let you know you're in on the joke. Iwao says pretty much the same thing in this interview. https://www.crimson-head.com/interviews/kenichi-iwao-interview
>>12671656>All the stupid bullshit in the REmake lile the trevor family and spooky gothic haunted house shit are the result of Mikami.I specifically think this is him responding to people saying RE isn't scary, and that Silent Hill does it better. Lisa feels way more at home as a Sh enemy than RE.
Were the zombies wearing the tattered suits all Umbrella’s corporate people?
>>12671567Resident evil's story has always been a ducked taped mess. Capcom are originally an arcade company that got into console gaming, so the DNA of capcom was never really focused on story and mostly on gameplay, to their detriment.
>>12671490>small midwestern town aesthetic.in my headcanon I've always seen it as a regional company town. around 100,000 population. not small but not a national metro outside the context of umbrella business.
>>12672148I have the impression that there was a disconnect in the original as well, between the developers and the people that wrote the manual. Barry is a former swat officer according to the manual, but he calls chris his old partner (in the manual, chris served in the airforce).
If RC is in a mountain town in the Midwest, would it be in or around eastern Ohio?
>>12672180For some reason I always pictured it as the Missouri ozarks rather than Ohio's appalachian side
>>12672180>>12672184Looks like NYC to me.
>>12672192
>>12672192>he savedYDBTG
>>12672194I got it off google images, not my screenshot.
>>12672192>>12672193There's nothing that implies that's supposed to be Raccoon City. Maybe he was on vacation
>>12672184I guess that would explain the Bakers being able to visit the Arklays at one point
>>12672201Maybe. But I'm sure most people would think that it is RC. But knowing that Chris wasn't from there in the original, it could actually be that he's from NY and went back home after all was done.
Here is the way I would re-write Re2 and 3 to fit with the original game's lore:Re2:Instead of Leon being an outsider coming to RC for his first day on the job (somehow bypassing the military cordon), have him be a RC native, already working as a rookie RPD officer when shit goes down. The game would drop us basically where 1.5 did, with Leon already at the station trying to work out an escape plan.Claire is so desperate to find her brother that she makes the drive to RC and uses the skills tought to her by her brother to sneak past the cordon, ignoring the warnings. She finds her in over her head when she gets to the city and is rescued by Leon when someone spots her via helicopter, and takes her back to the station (this would be the streets section). The rest of the game with ada, birkin, sherry and irons plays out like in the game we got.Re3:The game would be identical to the one we got with only the backstory being different. Jill would be in the city investigating on orders from STARS higher ups or on her own, Brad staying too because they're buddies, while Chris goes to Europe. You can play the game as is while having that as headcanon.
>>12671563Weren't they were forces to connect 2 to 1?which would explain the messy recons.
>>12672257One thing RE2's narrative does VERY WELL is to explain why the story starts when it does, and why Leon and Claire are involved in Racoon City. So otherwise, you have maybe Leon hanging around and the city falls part and he he's stuck in a room or something until he suddenly decides to start exploring the rest of the place? Why does he get involved when he does? That being said, we know that Leon and Claire are meant to be big deals for the rest of the series, but Claire was a big dud. In part simply because the game to star her was a dud. But fans love Leon way more. Even the ladies. So why not just use Elza from the start? Claire's outfit makes zero sense for a motorcycle rider, since she has so much exposed skin. Elza is wearing a proper motocycle suit.
Seems like a good place to ask. Why did zombies crawl out of the graveyard in RE3? Knowing how transmission of the virus works they would have had to been buried alive while infected? My ultimate guess is that it looks cool so they ran with it but it has always bothered me.
>>12672257My quick re-write:>Claire comes to town looking for her brother>the T and G viruses are spread via water or air and it quickly infected the whole town in less than a week>Leon is holding out and trying to survive on the outskirts trying to save people>Claire is cornered by zombies>Leon shoots the zombie and saves her (like in the original)>Claire says who she is, and her mission, and Leon decides to drive her down to the RPD>same situation where an infected driver goes haywire and causes a crash and they split upRE3:>Jill is trapped in her apartment, devising a plan>This was the crash that Claire and Leon experienced at the start of RE2>hears an emergency broadcast saying help is arriving and any survivors to meet up at various designated helipad including the RPD>These are the Umbrella mercs >she needs to get to the RPD and fast >whoops, some kind of helicopter already crashed here and the helipad is wrecked.
>>12672350Yeah that was bullshit
>>12672350RE:CV has a similar sitaution, and they explain in the interviews that they were hastily buried while infected and aren't actually the dead re-animated. The early RE games try to make it clear that they never properly die. So we can surmise that the infection is spreading over a week or two, and people are dropping "dead" so they start putting them into graves. They are in fact undergoing the transformation. Then jill comes along and wakes them up.
>>12671490If you're talking about Chris's ending screen in #5, he's not in Raccoon City. He's back home in NYC. According to early material he was a New Yawker. You can also see on the big TV screen that it's a report about Umbrella. You can see the logo and the headline says something about Illegal Bio Weapons.
Something weird is that everyone I knew who played RE2 back when it came out just sort of intuitively knew that Lickers were transformed zombies. But as far as I can tell that's never mentioned anywhere in the game or the manual. I specifically remember talking to one of my friends at lunch and we figured the zombies eat people because they're feeding this transformation on the inside and they look all rotten because all their old flesh and skin would just kind of peel off when their new body was finished growing.
>>12671614>It's possible CV and RE4 are Scenario A and Scenario B from the same game about taking down Umbrella that were split up into two games. The games came out five years apart. Nothing was split up. CV was what it was always meant to be. It's true that RE4 was changed around a lot during its development, but these changes had nothing to do with CV's development.
>>12672350It felt like they thought it'd be a cool moment. No real justification for it, just a cool set piece to reference other zombie media
>>12672493It doesn't mean it was split up part way through development. It means that Noboru Sugimura sat down and wrote a draft for a sequel idea with RE2's Scenario A and Scenario B formats. Then it was decided right then and there that it's probably too much or they want to milk things out so they make it two games. This would have been before RE3 was even made. Work starts on CV, and its mostly outsourced and meant to show off the Dreamcast. The plan was for the super cool television writer Noboru Sugimura and his team called Flagship write the entire mythos to everything. But CV was a dud, and they were shifted to other games until Sugimura died in 2005. RE4 had a noticeably more difficult dev cycle going through several iterations. REmake, RE0, and RECV, being three sales disapointments in a row led to wild changes in story and gameplay. Mikami got almost full story and writing control for the first time in the series history.
>>12672519Note how Flagship writes RE:CV, and RE:0, which were two duds, THEN they created two draft storylines to Re4 that were not used. So they wanted to keep working on RE, but higher ups lost complete confidence in them. RE2 might have just been lightning in a bottle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagship_(company)
>>12672520>>12672519>>12672462QRD on RE4's development and how things changed to what Capcom released?
>>12671645Mikami looks different ...
>>12671490>Developers makes the first game cautiously, only including stuff that they truly believe will work well>People like it>Developers become overconfident and make the sequels increasingly stupid/campier because they think it'll make them better, like a daft kid overexplaining a joke until it's no longer funnyWhy is it always like this?
>>12672531Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Haunted Ground, and lord knows what else, spun out of RE4's development. I think there was another one, i forget. Development was chaotic going through several itinerations, and when they thought they had something cool but didn't fit RE4 they spun it into a new game and started over. RE4 was supposed to come out WAY earlier than it did, probably around 2002. Mikami cited in an interview that he had conversations with Capcom executives about how REmake was a sales disapointment, and that they were moving Re4 in a more action direction. RE: Dead Aim is in a very weird spot, as it's about a white guy going on a ship infected with zombies while a chinese spy lady hunts him. The two leads look almost exactly like Leon and Ada, and I'm certain this was probably a prototype RE4 story as well but they weren't going to commit to it. It's telling that RE: Gaiden IS about Leon on a ship too.
>>12672585What people forget is that the RE:CV, RE:0, REmake, was part of the nadir of the series. There were a lot of cheap spin offs, and the main games were very formulaic and not as good as past ones. The series went from hot and exciting to stale and boring, and the sales reflected this. Mikami then said drastic changes were needed and made Re4 in a direction focused on action. It's telling that Umbrella is destroyed in the intro without much fuss, yet Leon is going to Europe ANYWAYS to hang around spooky castles fighting sketchy Europeans doing bio-terrorism anyways.
>>12672184It's just japs not understanding American geography, west Virginia, Virginia, or even Pennsylvania make more sense because Leon drove all night to make it to raccoon from New York, iirc. About a 6-8 hour drive is in that range since Leon arrived and it was still dark.
>>12672192Same, when i played resident evil 1 for the first time i always thought the forest was loosely based in the forest areas of the north west of USA like the ones of Oregon or the forests of north of california. And after i played resident 3 and seeing the park and the clock tower, i always thought raccon city was loosely based in New York.

Old RE lore is wild. Jill's original backstory was that she's ex-Delta Force which is funny because Delta Force didn't actually allow women until the mid-2010s. Rebecca too, she's a child prodigy, sure, but somehow she's finished university, the police academy AND the special STARS training all by 18.Also was Barry meant to be a Vietnam veteran originally or am I imagining that one?
>>12674960Where do I find the rest of this please?

>>12675505I can't get over the "Gill" hahahahahahaha
>>12674960>Gill Valentine>snark about her being Japanese-FrenchSo it's clearly an English translation of Japanese material, and they're even mocking the JP kits for mentioning her being JP-French mix. >mixes Chris and Rebecca's pictures for some reasonThat's a mistake that can't be abided really. >barry is a FiremanAgain, likely a bungled translation, most likely saying Barry is a Fire-arms expert. It's possible they used English terminology that they misunderstood. Solution: Find the JP original press kits, as they would not contain any of these silly errors.
>>12675226>Old RE lore is wild. Jill's original backstory was that she's ex-Delta Force which is funny because Delta Force didn't actually allow women until the mid-2010s.You can also do math and she can't have done all the things she did while only being 24. I am fine with Jill being Delta-Force, sicne it's a fictional comic book style universe, and whatever, that's what you can do in RE-world. I do think there's something to the new RE2 team and set of writers trying to make Leon and Claire these super cool new people who are the new focus of the RE series to phase out the STARS team. When RE1 really sets up STARS to be this big deal who are probably going to be part of sequels. RE3 featuring Jill again feels almost like it's them wanting to make a quick sequel on the PS to cash in on RE's popularity, rather than something they planned from the start.
>>12675734There's some early FF7 press with "Claude", "Alice" and "Bullet". Those are all plausible translations of the original Japanese as well.
I remember other early previews in different magazines talking about how you could find chainsaws and crossbows and other stuff not actually in the game. They also mentioned the tower and graveyard areas. Even the back of the box lists the graveyard as one of the areas for some reason.
>>12675226>Rebecca too, she's a child prodigy, sure, but somehow she's finished university, the police academy AND the special STARS training all by 18.She was included over the objections of Shinji Mikami, specifically so she'd be a cute character for the Japanese market. When RE0 rolls around, they literally re-design her to look like a J-Idol.
>>12671563>No one gives two shits about BSAAGen Z loves them actually.
>>12671574>Then umbrella dies off screen due to a business embargo (lol) and the series mutates into something else. The writer that was handling the final showdown had a heart attack and died and Mikami threw his script in the trash.
>>12675505Ah, Chris must be short for "Christina"
>>12676128The graveyard and lake / swamp with a small boat house is in their concept art map but it was never modeled or even considered because of lack of purpose and time.
>>12671509If I recall correctly the writer said STARS was a bigger force from a city or even another state, so quite different from the small SWAT team type force we see in RE2.Also a shadow branch of the government was directly involved with the laboratory. All this was retconed.
Somone needs to get a hold of the og japanese press releases, and using all the versions of the manuals as well as all the lore we get directly in the game. Then either write or make a video explaining the og lore and all aspects of it. Think of it like today's lore videos on youtube, but if yt existed in 1996 and re1 is the only game in the series.
>>12676191Shinji a gay, but Rebecca would have to be pretty special to get that far in life at that age, but she doesn't come off that way because she's basically a clumsy cute girl.
>>12672587This is an odd telling of the history, one that I think the executives at Capcom would like. The thing about the majority of resident evils failures at the time were tied to games being console exclusive. CV and REmake were on the dreamcast and GameCube, two console that did not sell well. The games they were putting out on ps2 were spin off titles that had none of the returning characters that people knew or liked and were hardly formulaic. In fact, starting with survivor, resident evil games that strayed from the resident evil formula were big failures. I would say the problem that Capcom had at this time was an internal company desire for resident evil games to be anything other than resident evil, the audience wasn't bored, they were.
>>12677980CV got ported to the PS2 in a hail mary to get people to buy it and it got middling sales. Meanwhile, Luigi's mansion sold more than RE0, Eternal Darkness, and Remake COMBINED. Game history tends to be made by people who care more about Eternal Darkness than Luigi's Manison btw. RE0 = 1.25REmake = 1.15Eternal Darkness = 0.5 million Luigi's Mansion = 3.3 million
>>12676604I would have written her as a local girl who is a volunteer EMT or something like that and acting as a guide for the city slicker STARS. Maybe make her a little bit of a rednecky country girl. But then you would lose that silly Japanese charm of an 18 year old girl with a PhD in biochemistry slumming it on a glorified SWAT team.
Did a quick browse of the thread and not one mention that the REAL version of Resident Evil 1 is the original US PS1 release? Could be missing it but... man, this stuff is important if you care about RE1!!!!That original version was what defined survival horror. That original version was what sparked a franchise. You cannot play this version ANYWHERE except if you have the disc or image file of the specific version: SLUS-00170If you think you beat RE1 but did not play this version (on PS1, PS2, or emulated) then I regret to inform you that you are wrong. You played a version without any survival horror in your survival horror game, you missed out... You were flooded with ammo and health items, you had more health to lose, and the enemies hit less hard.
>>12677997Wow, the launch title that is tied to Mario on the Nintendo console sold more than third party games intended for a more mature audience, good thing you had a graph or else I wouldn't have believed you. Everything i said was correct, the problem with resident evil games wasn't the audience, it was Capcom mishandling the franchise.
>>12677980>>12678052Truth. Had they not bogged down the franchise by constantly churning out spinoffs on irrelevant consoles no one owned, we'd have a much different story.
>>12678043the real version is the japanese one, chud.
>>12678043based
>>12678053I think the bigger take away is that Capcom was bored with the resident evil formula and wanted to make different games, the audience wanted more resident evil. Yes, 4 was successful, but even at the time I used the line, "it's a good game, but a bad resident evil game". All you have to do is look at RE6 to illustrate how badly Capcom understood their fans. I'm sure someone will say, but it sold well so was a success, it's still famously the game that nearly killed them, is to this day hated, and damaged them critically in a way that harmed future sales. People call RE7 a return to form, which I would disagree with, but that people call it a return to survival horror shows that's what people want. I believe that currently Capcom is frustrated by this because they clearly want to make something their audience does not want, something other than resident evil.
>>12678447For me RE7 was the start of another slop era, like Re4. Just a different type of slop. The first wave was the action trilogy that started with a undeniably good game but then just got worse and worse until it hit rock bottom with Re6. Re7 started the walking simulator, outlast, streamer slop that, like the action era, is getting worse and worse with each installment. Re7 was a boring outlast inspired slog, Re8 sucked even more and Re9 is just pure garbage that was astrotufed to high hell, but the honeymoon is over now and the general opinion is shifting. Also, I know that "slop" is a meme word, but it just the perfect descriptor.
>>12678043While not the original, inteded way of playing it, I agree that the longbox/blackbox version of the original is the best way to play. No autoaim, both characters need ink ribbons (which there are less of than the japanese original), enemies deal a quarter of damage more and no autoaim. I think it's the pefect Medium difficulty between the piss easy jap original and the ball bustingly hard Advanced mode from the Director's Cut.
>>12678480*said autoaim twiceOops.
>>12676604>Shinji a gay, but Rebecca would have to be pretty special to get that far in life at that age, but she doesn't come off that way because she's basically a clumsy cute girl.>because she's basically a clumsy cute girl.Which is exactly what a Japanese "cute" girl is. Mikami hates the concept, and ignored her as much as possible after that. I feel like Re3 would have been the time for a Barry-Rebecca side scenario as well.
>>12678756Well yeah Rebecca is approachable and not standoffish compared to Jill in RE3But Jill in RE1, she's kinda funloving too to be honest, but I'm kinda basing that on her voice actor.
>>12678470every word of this is true
>>12671535the novelizations by SD Perry turn white umbrella into the secret section of umbrella in charge of bio weapon research - one of the spin offs set between 3 and CV called Underworld had them take one of the members down
>>12672350i recall a post before explaining that they succumbed to the virus and during the coma like period were accidently buried also its a reference to return of the living dead that had a similar scene
>>12679429I always assumed that there was a White and Red Umbrella. White being the more deep corporate side and Red being the executive side conducting experiments on the ground. White and Red being the two colors in the logo.
>>12671490The worst entries in the RE franchise sold the best till date. Which is proof that dumbing down material works best for monetary gain.
>>12679429I've never read them but Perry used the manuals as references for the novels. So I assume the novelization of the first game is the closest we'll get to a detailed story featuring the og lore.
>>12679489It proves that NPCs fall for marketing
>>12671563>>12671563I think a big core of it is just things overlooked, assumed or things mistaken by Japanese writers about what American policing or municipal services might work. Obviously now in the modern post 9/11 American police state the weapons are not unusual but in the mid 90s it would be. A lot of police departments even in big cities didn’t have anything larger than a 12 gauge shotgun until that one big Los Angeles bank heist (the one Heat was loosely based off of). Smaller cities even more so. Now small towns have full arsenals of AR15s and a grenade launcher (for tear gas) and a Bear Cat armored vehicle. The big thing that jumped out at me recently that I never thought of until recently (since first playing RE2 in 99) is that police departments do not have morgues. Obviously it’s a creative license but I think the paramilitary police unit that is STARS is along those same lines.
>>12679639The cop shop in Parasite Eve also had a morgue. On the second floor of all places. At least RE2 put it in the basement.
>>12679698I forgot to add, it also copies the interrogation room mirror jumpscare from RE2. And there's a lab tech in the crime lab who can heal you. Her dialogue is almost identical to Rebecca in RE1 when she heals you in the chemical storerooms.
>>12679639AR15s were always pretty popular. I'm over 50 and a police liaison who would hop from school to school to tell kids to trust cops and drugs are bad. He would break the ice by showing off an empty baretta pistol, a short shotgun and a AR15, which he called a common deer hunting rifle. And this was 40 years ago in a city of 30k. I could practically recite his speech, because I saw him every year in elementary school. This was before DARE was a thing.
>>12679724Well I’m not doubting every police department had some type of rifle especially in country areas with wildlife issues (although I guess coyotes are a problem in LA County) I just had read that LA /hollywood bank robbery (since the the perps had a full auto AK and AR/M16 type rifle) was the catalyst for PDs getting more powerful weapons and more of them in general. Plus having SWAT having a bigger role in more areas
>>12672350IIRC the zombies that dig out aren't wearing suits or anything else you'd generally bury someone in (fancy suit zombies are in the game, but only spawn around town hall) so I'm willing to roll with the "recently infected and hastily buried post-outbreak" theory, clumsy as it may be.
>>12678043That is the version I remember best. I do remember even back then it was known the Japanese version had an uncensored intro and a head falling from the first zombie encounter, but I liked the video in B&W. I've not experienced the clown farts music and autoaim, because it was the longbox version I played.
>>12671558>Elite Unit>Okay guys, I'm going into this one with a pistol and 15 bullets, maybe a lockpick or herb mixing set. Chris, you take the bic lighter. If shit goes down, I've got my fancy beret!
>>12679639>>12679698Civic complexes where everything was either right next to each other, or in one big structure. If you think about things it makes sense over seperating all these things which work together, but somewhere along the line city planners decided you needed to drive 45 minutes just to take a shit then 30 minutes to the place where you can wipe your ass
>>12679448Interesting take, but both Kenichi Iwao (RE1) and Noboru Sugimura (RE2, RE0, CV and RE3 as consultant) only considered a single Umbrella. The White Umbrella text is in the English script only. The mail in RE1 is implied to be from Wesker's superior, not directly from Umbrella.
>>12680134>you take the bic lighter.its obviously a Zippo.

>>12680191Fun fact:The page of the Keeper's Diary that mentions getting a day off and seeing "Nancy" was added to english version and is completely absent in the original Japanese. One reason I can think they did this is to foreshadow Wesker being the bad guy ("guy with sunglasses").
>>12680207>someone pre-packaged the pc hd projectsFucking hallelujah
>>12671490>Raccoon City itself is depicted as a modern metropolis in one of the end screens, going against the small midwestern town aesthetic. While I can't really remember a whole lot I can remember what I thought of it the first time I played the original trilogy. My very first take on RC when I played the first game was that it was a sort of small tourist town kinda like Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg.After playing 2 the city itself was much larger than I originally thought but it was clear to me it wasn't a metropolis like NYC or Chicago or something, it was also really odd how clearly it was intended to be a Midwestern city but then took a lot of influence and design from the east coast. Perhaps that is indicative of a pretty old but quiet city, not sure. RE3 basically just doubled down on what I thought in 2, it has even more odd esoteric design that seems to take from everything Modern Tokyo to a southern hamlet, it starts to feel almost like St. Louis which would actually add up so bravo Capcom. I couldn't care beyond that RC was always just whatever it needed to be and that is fine.>Umbrella appears to have been much less widely known and more localized in Raccoon City and its immediate surroundings. Chris has never even heard of them until that night.Just wanted to add that this is not that weird, outside of the nearest major city to me is a massive Beyer facility, if you didn't live out that way or work there you wouldn't really know, the sign is not large or in your face, the building looks fairly regular for the area. I also didn't know this place existed until about 2 years ago. That's the big one around them are probably 20 other companies I have literally never heard of.
>>12671490Originally Umbrella were Nazis brought over during project paper clip and the red of the logo was the iron cross hidden in plain sight. This was considered too B movieish even in a game that was a westaboos love letter to B movies.
>>12680809The original Ashford artwork was crazy, I don't have it on hand but it learned really hard into what you just mentioned.
>>12680832Theres RE1 concept art capcoms tried real hard to bury thats spencer in a straight up SS uniform knowing the Ashfords i bet thats where the idea for them came from. Some "couldnt quite get to argentina" shit.
>>12680809>>12680832>>12680845So Oswald Spencer wasn't introduced in the Remake but was part of the story originally?
>>12680965He was actually in the mansion in very very early development but they just decided the place being totally devoid of human life was more effective and in hindsight yeah it was the better choice. Makes Wesker reveal and betrayal more impactful. You spend the whole game exploring the aftermath of umbrellas bullshit that is hanging over everything as this oppressive presence only to find out your own boss was part of it. I think spencer goose stepping and seig heiling and talking about the tyrants being a master race would have crossed the line from cheesy to absurd.
>>12680809>>12680845That goes a long way explaining the lugers in CV
So a few corrections to my list:1. RC wasn't depicted as a metropolis. That was NYC in the Chris end screens where he was originally from.2. White Umbrella doesn't exist and was added to the English version.3. Spencer was originally part of the story. This was cut from the final game and his name appears nowhere in the manual or game, so this isn't exactly an error.
>>12680979and the blonde haired, blue eyed psycho kids raised to believe they were a master race bloodline. Honestly they could use that in the remake to tie them loosely to Los Illuminados or The Connections or something.
>>12680845Someone please find and post this concept art.
>>12680987Knowing modern Capcom it'll just be a prolonged scene where Alexia gives Alfred an exotic ant job and Claire gets face raped by a jabberwock while Steve cries because that jabberwock is his father.
>>12681043Yeah I've seen a ton of very early sketches of just about everything that did and didn't make it into the game and I've never seen or even heard of anything like that.
>>12681147Probably mistaking it with early concepts for CV which did indeed have the villains have Nazi ties.
>>12680207Not joining your gay message board, Spike.
>>12681083theres no jabberwock ? this isnt american mcgee Alice.you are probably thinking of the bandersnatch.
>>12672192I wonder if that ending screen also counts as an RE1-ism, since it implies Umbrella gets exposed instead of Irons being a dickhead and keeping everything under wraps. Sorry if I'm wrong.
>>12682192That was the original plan for RE2. Umbrella was exposed and shut down due to the events of the first game and it was going to wrap up all the loose ends of the whole Raccoon City/Umbrella story.
>>12676191My only complains about Rebecca are her breasts size(she would look better with bigger breasts) and her short hair(she would look better with long hair).
There is also the original mikami characters to consider, he wanted Jill's partner charter to be like an 8 foot tall cyborg and Chris's partner to be an Eddie Murphy character that told jokes and had a sling shot.
>>12671490Never realized how streamlined re2 is.
Unrelated but when I played Re1 for the first time, the final Wesker monologue was so poorly translated and the music so loud that I had no idea what just happened and had to look up the plot to figure out the details of the betrail and what really happened.
>>12683503Yeah, there's a particular variant of the encounter with Chris and Wesker, I forget if its the one with Rebecca, or the one without, but it is egregiously nonsensical even by the game's usual standards. Like, madlibs levels of incoherent.
>>12683503>>12683665You don't have subtiles turne don? I thought they were on by default in RE games.
