If you're allowing mid-frame palette changes via DMA/CPU writes, there is no single hard "max color count" for the Genesis anymore.

With raster effects, you can rewrite palette entries during the frame. The same palette slot can represent different colors on different scanlines.

Theoretical maximum Approaches the full 1,536 color space (512 normal + 512 shadow + 512 highlight) though not all simultaneously visible in the same scanline. That's why you'll sometimes see claims of ~1400–1500 colors on screen for Genesis demo scenes.

Yes. Several Genesis/Mega Drive games use palette changes during the frame to exceed the normal 64-color limitation, though usually for backgrounds, skies, gradients, and special effects rather than full-screen photo-quality images.

Notable examples:
Sonic the Hedgehog series
Uses raster palette changes for skies, water, sunsets, and special stage effects.
The water in zones like Labyrinth and Hydrocity relies heavily on palette animation and color cycling.

Thunder Force IV:
Uses extensive raster effects, palette manipulation, and parallax tricks.
Stages contain rich gradients that would be impossible with a single static 64-color palette.

Panorama Cotton:
Makes heavy use of palette effects and scaling tricks.
Many scenes feature color-rich skies and backgrounds.

Red Zone:
Uses extensive DMA and raster effects.

Ranger-X:
Uses Shadow/Highlight mode extensively.
Effectively triples the color count

The Adventures of Batman & Robin:
Uses Shadow/Highlight mode, raster effects, and advanced VDP tricks.

Life on Mars:
packed with demo-scene techniques

These projects display hundreds or even over a thousand unique colors across a frame by constantly rewriting palette entries as the beam scans down the screen.

Those games demonstrate that the Genesis' practical visual capability was significantly beyond the simplistic "64 colors on screen" specification often quoted in magazines.

It's really nice to have access to the entire library with save games. I had an X3, but the reset button on my console hasn't worked since I got it for my 6th birthday 30 years ago

I play Genesis games on my Wii, the emulator is pretty good.
Been thinking of buying a Genesis but I dont have much knowledge about what to look in one besides "early Model 1 is the best."

There are actually some decent clones of the console these days if you know where to look. But obviously I'd suggest you stay away from the AT GAMES stuff. I'd also recommend you look for a 6-Button Controller as most of the titles later on in the system's lifespan kind of require it (WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game, Comix Zone, etc), but it's mostly just fighting games

Oh yeah I have seen videos on how bad AtGames shit is.
I think AliExpress sells Genesis clones (not emuboxes, actual consoles that can play Genesis cartridges) but like everything on that site, I don't truly trust it.
My other option is FB Marketplace, but I mostly see Model 2.

Model 2 is good. DESU, you're probably not going to notice too much of a difference in audio unless you're some kind of audophile purist. Model 3, as cute as it is, probably isn't that great

Yes, so the Mega Everdrive Pro can play Sega CD games right off of the cartridge. Unfortunately you still need to have the add-on to play 32X games, but you can also just put them on the flash cart

Playing Aerobiz Supersonic. Starting in New York is babby mode difficulty. Going to retry the third scenario with another HQ city. On the second scenario I started in Rome and it was a hell of a battle to be powerful enough to clash with the New York CPU and snatch victory a quarter or two before the twenty year mark.
