What are your favorite Castlevania titles from the platform entries? Outside of the NES original, I haven't really tried any but I'm increasingly curious

This will upset fake gamers but it is the objective truth
>>
>>12676139
I agree with everything but Simon's Quest should be higher. C-tier at least.
>>
>>12676016
Wish Konami and Nintendo collab crossover for Mariovania

To be fair, archie comics seem bad
>>
Am I the only one who really doesn't like the X68000 game? It feels like a cheap bootleg or something, very unpolished.
>>
>>12676292
Did you actually play it on X68K or did you play Iga's butchered PSX port?
>>
>>12676629
Both seem pretty much the same to me. What's the big difference?
>>
>>12676631
The PSX port has fucked up audio (hitting candles sounds like popping balloons), completely fucked up whip hit detection (for instance in the original there are cases where you have to kneel to hit certain enemies but on PSX you don't have to), worse AI for some enemies and bosses; and the timer depletes faster than it should, which makes one level particularly hard to beat without running out of time and using a checkpoint unless you already know the level by heart (and instead of fixing it, they put an option to turn off the timer entirely).

It's a shit port
>>
>>12676641
HUD is fucked too. PSX version blocks a potion at the top making vertical segments harder by hiding enemies.
>>
>>12676641
They also removed all voice acting like the doll enemies saying "dare?" and "yamete!".
>>

>>12676787
Oh right I forgot about that. The vertical resolution is also smaller which affects the spawn point/moment of enemies in vertical scrolls

pic related, that doll at the top right, which is a flying enemy, wouldn't appear on PSX until you jump to the next platform
>>
>>12676139
literally nothing is upsetting about this
if you're a real man then put IV in D tier where it belongs
>>
>>12676139
Belmont's Revenge is way too high
>>
>>12676139
I'm not even going to expand the thumbnail, I'm just going to filter "tier list" faggotry.
>>
>>12676016
>platformer entries
So 2 doesn't count?
I've played 1,3,4, and Rondo of Blood
I would replay 4 and RoB
RoB is the best in my opinion
>>
>>12677375
you would know that belmont's revenge is one of the best games in the series if you actually played it
>>
>>12676016
I really like both Dracula X and Super Castlevania. Dracula X isn't as complex as Super, but plays basically like the NES ones, which is alright, and it has extremely enjoyable music, sound, and graphics.

Honorable mention to Chronicles on PSX, as I also dig its art and music a lot. Simon's Theme in that one is appropriately bombastic and dramatic.

>>12676139
Haunted Castle can't POSSIBLY be worde than Legends. Legends actually bored me to submission, I gave up on it because Castlevania has never been so unfun to me before.
>>
>>12676796
Man, I was missing out on that the whole time? Has anyone ever considered trying to fix that port up? I don't wanna emulate it on my PC when Chronicles just runs on my old PS3.
>>
>>12676139
Nice bait. I'm reticent to include Simon's Quest as it's technically the first Metroidvania of the series, but here's the real list:

>S
Bloodlines, Simon's Quest, Rondo
>A
Dracula XX, CV3, X68000
>B
Adventure Rebirth, HC Revisited
>C
CV1
>D
Belmonts Revenge
>E
Legends, Vampire Killer
>F
SCV4, Adventure, HC

Not retro, but DoS Julius mode is also S tier and could have been its own game.
>>
>>12677424
I've beaten every Castlevania game ever released that wasn't made for a casino or pachinko parlor. It's the best of the GB games and one of the best games on the Gameboy, but it's still ass relative to the rest of the series.
>>
Stop liking 4
>>
>>12677320
>put IV in D tier where it belongs
Based. Though personally I rank it lower than that.
>>12677540
>Haunted Castle can't POSSIBLY be worde than Legends
Oh, it can and is. The first stage is decent but after that it's every cheap trick in the book to suck the quarters out of your pocket. Legends at least has some story elements to keep your attention despite lacklustre gameplay.
>>
>>12677649
Fuck off egoraptor fanboy
>>
>>12677657
No
>>
>>12677636
>it's still ass relative to the rest of the series.
you're talking absolute shit. belmont's revenge has some of the most clever, most interactive level design in the series, period
eyeball enemies that blow up the platform under them when they die? awesome.
killing dangling spiders and then climbing on the strings they leave behind? awesome.
the part where destroying candles actually makes the screen go black? awesome.
destroying that giganigga spike crusher and watching it flatten the scenery under it? awesome.
i don't care who you think you are, most castlevania games don't have 1/3rd of belmont's revenge's creativity
>>
I really like the clock tower in Dracula's curse. I think that game was the best one on NES
>>
>>12677783
Based and true. The rope platforming and hidden rooms were nice too.
>>
>>12677783
>>12677813
And none of that matters because the game plays like shit
>>
>>12676631
The whip/sub-weapon hitboxes are much less forgiving in the x68k version, that's the biggest difference. Also the Werewolf boss, which is already a big difficulty spike in the PS1 version, is even harder in x68k because she can only be damaged at certain times.

Also, certain enemies in vertical stages "activate" earlier, which can make the last stage of the Clock Tower and the Tower of the Dolls both trickier. There's a lot of little changes but those three are the most impactful imo.
>>
>>12677908
Wrong. It plays great.
>>
>>12677813
>rope platforming
i've said this before but it bears repeating: belmont's revenge did more with ropes than the entire rest of the series has done with stairs
>>
why the fuck did it take this long for you morons to realize SCIV sucked? did it just take you posers that long to get around to actually emulating it for the ~10 minutes or so of attention span you can occasionally work up for a game?
>>
>>12679984
I stopped liking it just now after reading your post
>>
>>12679990
oh i see, it's just the latest shitpost topic. none of you have actually played it still and just argue about it for dopamine hits. understood.
>>
>>12679992
That's right anon, you are the only one here that plays video games and has immaculate taste and opinions, the rest of us? nah, we're stopping to like video games
>>
>>12679984
What warranted you to post this?
This thread has mostly people who do like 4, and then 2 anons who bashed it, one of them obviously bait, the other one possibly too as well.
This thread turned more about the differences of X68k and Ps1 chronicles.
4 rent free?
>>
>>12679984
I own the actual cartridge and played it when it came out so I can give a real opinion and not a youtuber filtered one like yours. 4 is a great game.
>>
>>12676016
I love the N64 games, truly the last bastions for classic Castlevania.
>>
>>12676139
That's strangely... correct. Not even a bait.
>>
Bloodlines is liked because it is rare. But otherwise it is an unremarkable castlevania hash with little to add. CV IV is in my opinion the peak of what I've played. 3d segments which make you go wow, a very diverse environment with outdoor landscapes and sunken cities, neat bosses in the endgame. It's the peak, don't listen to stupid contrarians
>>
>>12680485
The rotating level was so trippy, man.
>>
>>12680485
Don't forget the music. That early waterfall level track is wonderful.
>>
>>12680485
> well ummm muh graphics good so umm the game is good
No.
>>
>>12676139
Pretty good rankings but where are you putting Rondo and Chronicles?
>>
>>12681075
Rondo and X68 go on A rank. Chronicles is mangled port of X68 and goes on C rank.
>>
>>12681096
Doesn't Chronicles have the full original X68000 version included alongside the new PS1 version? Is there anything wrong with Chronicles X68000 port. What was so bad about Chronicles that it drop 2 full ranks.
>>
>>12676139
Decent list I’d change some stuff though.
>Rondo is S
>Bloodlines is A
>Castlevania 2 is B
>Dracula X could be C

I know it’s fun to bash on Simon’s Quest but it’s still got plenty of highpoints and started the whole Metroidvania thing. How can you leave out Rondo and Bloodlines? IV is a good time and looks great but it’s easy. I almost said it should be B tier but I’ll leave it as A for aesthetics and sound if nothing else.
>>
>>12681116
No, it's the same mangled port >>12676641 >>12676787 except with the old X68K graphics and music.
>>

Same argument everyone makes for every game.
At the end of the day, 99% of people's takes are "good good" "bad bad" "good bad" and "bad good".
It's rare to get actual insight, let alone from people who actually played the games.
Reality is almost all classicvanias are good. All the home console ones are good.
>>
>>12680485
>Bloodlines is liked because it is rare.
Bloodlines is not rare. It was a popular Sega Genesis game and to this day appears on pretty much everyone's Genesis must play lists. Don't act like it is Rondo where it was Japan only and made for an expensive CD add-on of a system that flopped in the US. Bloodlines is liked because it is fun.
>All the home console ones are good.
Also this.
>>
>>12681117
I just found SQ really really boring. So much walking and talking. It's weird to go from an action platformer to that.
>>
>>12678423
Nah Belmont is still pretty slow in though not as bad as in the first GB game
>>
>>12676016
IV is my absolute favorite. Hell, the music alone puts it at the top of my list without even factoring anything else into the equation.
