That was their 1 (one) Xbox game that year too. That also was the year the undisputed worst Mega Man Battle Network game was released. Their output on Gamecube definitely fared better.

Loved the edgy story and soundtrack as a kid.
The level design is horrible, literally large square rooms that spawn dozens of enemies, then the doors open and you go to the next one.
Since the game spawns so many enemies, the environments are not only simple but also very ugly. Usually just brown walls and a grey sky texture.
The MC's moveset + how it interacts with all the minions (I think there were 8 total, 7 deadly sins + Thanatos?) allows for a fair bit of customization, but it's probably clunky af by today's standards.

There's an optional "Richter mode" where you play as the MC's gf with dual pistols and kicks and shit, it removes the minion mechanic making the game even more hollow, but she's cute I guess.

All that said, I wish modern games were willing to experiment as much, everything is a souls-like these days because game dev is expensive and nothing else sells.

Applies to a lot of games from the late 90s and early 2000s. A lot of the gameplay quality standards hadn't been figured out yet and devs were working with piss poor tools so almost all 3d games from that era have a certain amount of jank.

Yeah thats what I mean this game had mad potential. Imagine the minion gimmick but with combat as good as DMC1 and better level design? It would be an instant classic, instead its a ultra clunky super difficult game to get into with an insane difficulty curve in the US release.

Nah, im actually a huge fan of a ton of cult classic slashers from the PS2 era. I went through Genji, the onimusha series, Rygar, Van Helsing, Blood Will Tell: Dororo

Next on my list is Bujingai, Samurai Western, Seven Samurai 20xx, and....I think thats it. Unless anybody has recommendations.

So far I think Blood Will Tell was the best game because of how much soul it had. Its clunky much like this game except something about it kept me coming back. Probably just better level design and more moves to play with, as well as sick bosses.

That well is bottomless. You could try Crimson Tears, Mark of Kri and/or Nanobreaker too. I got kinda tired of Nanobreaker but I'm not really a Metroidvania guy. The action was decent. If you don't mind not being able to understand the language, you could try Chain Dive too.
