One game from the 90s which gets consistently featured in lists of the worst games of all time is the stinker by the name of Superman64. One of the main reasons people will cite their hatred for the game is that 99% of it is about Superman flying through rings. As I understand, later on in the game Superman eventually moves on to doing more Superman type stuff like picking up cars and beating up enemies, but the majority of players will never make it far enough to experience that because they'll most likely be bored of the flying through rings crap long before they make it that far. If the flying through rings crap was removed or reduced then I suspect this game probably wouldn't be hated as much as it is.

But Superman64 isn't the only example of a 90s game based around flying through rings. Another example which gets posted about on here often is another stinker that came out on the Sega Saturn called "Nights into Dreams" where you play as an ambiguous tranny clown creature that flies through rings in the air. Some might say this game is the Saturn's equivalent of Superman64.

Another 90s game which featured flying through rings is Star Fox on the SNES. While that element of the game does indeed suck very much, it doesn't completely destroy it like the other two examples because its just a secondary element of the gameplay rather than a primary element.

I'm sure you can think of many more examples besides just these. The point is for some reason developers back then seemed to think this was a great gameplay idea and that players would love it, but in reality no one asked for it and it is universally hated. I just wonder what those devs back then were smoking which led them to think this was ever a great idea.

Try thinking critically for at least a minute.
If flying is a key part of the game, like achieving the feeling of flying through the air, you need to add in something to either direct or challenge the player whilst doing that.
Moving through goals is the most basic navigation check for control schemes, and rings in the air checks the player's grasp of ascending/descending, turning, path finding, etc.

Superman on N64 has a more complex flight system than Star Fox or NiGHTS into Dreams, as in the latter you only have two control axis with a simplified control scheme.
Though it happens that Titus did a shit job of implementing both a flight control scheme, and a hands-off tutorial on how to fly by just throwing you straight in with an unreasonably strict time limit for beginners.

Superman 64's issue besides the overambitious but under qualified developers was that they were working on a licensed game, and the license owners were unreasonable idea men who hated videogames. Most Superman games (whether the nes sunsoft one or the ps4 project) were cancelled for this reason.

I have played through Superman 64 and finished it, the flying through rings part will seem like masterful gameplay once you get to the rest of it. The entire game is an insult against God.

The thing was clearly unfinished. You can see how they modeled an entire city you would probably get missions in and traverse at will at some point, but they obviously didn't manage to pull it off on the N64.

One thing people these days don't understand is that back then, 3D controls were a challenge all by themselves. This is why now you can come back to games like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider and see how easy and non challenging they were compared to their successors, but back when RE1 was made even the devs of the game struggled hard with the controls and couldn't beat the game during testing.
It's the same principle with non tank controls. Now it's second nature to everyone, at the time it wasn't. See also the analog sticks on PSX which were basically not accepted and not widespread until the 00's.

A fair amount of more modern games have the flying through rings gameplay, Pilotwings Resort and Genshin Impact both have it, and it's well received in those games.
As many have pointed out this is more of an issue with Superman 64 having frustrating elements than flying through rings being a bad mechanic.

The reason people only remember the fly through rings segments is because the controls sucked so bad you end up spending 90% of the play through just trying to get past them. Ironically you've given away that you haven't played the game either and probably just watched a streamlined play through on youtube where they one-shotted those segments.
