Just got me a Sony KV-32FS320 from FB marketplace. Now just waiting for my component cables to arrive so I can play some PS2.
Dead hobby
>>12680019This
>>12680017Not bad. What sort brand/ quality of cables did you get? The quality of cable does effect picture quality. Especially at a 32 inchs. I had a 36 inch jvc crt that I had to really feed it nice cables or still see analog noise. At least I can still use those cables on my scaler now.
>>12680152If your cables don't look like pythons, are you really retrogaming?
>>12680152not OP but I found an OEM one at a goodwill for $1.49also got a gamecube one for $8 at a bookstoreyes both component not composite, and yes I actually use both and have no interest in selling them. Now I just need to find an xbox one but that's getting harder. I passed one up for $40 thinking I'd find one at goodwill but I still haven't

Sony KV-20S40 I picked up from the dump last month. Some crackhead cut the power cable for copper. After repair and service menu adjustments it looks pretty good. Component moddable.Every time I go there's a pallet of CRTs sitting there for the taking. Nothing crazy but now I have 4 Trinitrons, 3 Panasonics, and some other junk.
>>12681997>The elites don’t want you to know this but the CRTs at the dump are free you can take them home I have 458 CRTs.
The Dreamcast launched with VGA support via a separately sold VGA cable, that would let you play all Dreamcast games in 480p quality. But the Dreamcast was released in December 1998 in Japan. So if you were going to play your DC games on a PC CRT it was probably an old PC-98 monitor.
>>12681997Won't they have been rained on?
>>12680017Moving into a new place, and I kinda want to get scart switch with two outputs (one for CRT, one for video capture). How are those Aliexpress ones? Idea is to get GBSC Pro and cheap UVC HDMI grabber so I can just capture gameplay.
>>12682689Yeah they're sometimes wet from the rain when I get them. Once dried out they're good to go through.
>>12680019It'll be dead once shaders stop being a nightmare to tweak and fuck with.
>>12683782>stop being a nightmare to tweak and fuck withYou just know this dude would have a panic attack if faced with a command line
>>12683783DOS is 10k times easier to fuck with than any shader out there
>>12683785What the fuck are you even using? MegaBezel? use a simpler shader first
>>12683796CRT-Guest-HD and CRT-Lottes
>>12683798Guest is comprehensive but not too bad, the parameters are all self-explaining. Just find a base setting you like, save it and don't think too hard about it
>>12683803>the parameters are all self-explainingYes because halation and mask are clearly self explainable.
>>12683819You can ask any search engine what is halation (but believe me it's not that important unless you want a very blurry look). And masks are the most basic thing you should know about CRTs. On top of that you should also learn about TVL (which in guest-advanced is controlled by mask type and mask size settings). By the way, I advise sticking to the normal guest-advanced shader over the HD version, the HD version overcomplicates some things and it looks worse IMO.
>>12683830Anon, I don't want to know any of this, I want to play a fucking videogame. I'll demonstrate what I mean. This is Duckstation native.
>>12683834This is CRT Lottes fresh out of the box. The colors are fucked up, it's blurry and I don't think scanlines are supposed to be vertical like that.
>>12683836This is Guest HD. No parameters changed.I tried Guest Advanced and that looks even MORE fucked up.
>>12683834>DuckstationI know your problem now. Use retroarch if you wanna use shaders (no ifs and buts), the duckstation implementation is ass.
>>12683843No way in fucking hell am I navigating that eldritch nightmare of a program. The people who made that thing should be imprisoned for it. I'd rather eat my own shit than touch it.
>>12683846Ok, but I advise you to not bother with shaders on duckstation anyway. The shaders are usually designed for RA use and the duckstation ports aren't even official, just a hackjob by third parties. Accept your fate.
It's pretty difficult to explain, and I'm sure a lot of users on /vr/ would instinctively try to refute the idea, but there are some situations in retro gaming where playing retro games in progressive scan is actually *worse* for motion clarity than playing them in interlaced mode due to the game running in native interlaced resolution and having very odd native frame rates. Tubes > flats
>>12683868What about flat tubes?
>>12680017At what point do we have to worry about the majority of CRTs dying? Obviously brand quality determines life span, but I mean for average consumer CRTs you'll mostly find. Not the fancy stuff.
>>12683980CRT's can last hundreds of years if they aren't abused
>>12683980whenever capacitors stop being produced
>>12683980Not in our lifetimes. Better learn how to work on them though.
>>12683830>Trusting google AIYou are such a stupid fool
>>12684086I'm replacing all the capacitors in an old zenith now... I don't know how to do anything else though. Wish there was a way to test them in-circuit. If I have to pull them to test them they're getting replaced.
>>12684142The most important thing to learn beyond routine cap replacement and adjustments is using an oscilloscope to troubleshoot along a signal path. Imo it's pretty tough without an electrical background and experience
>>12681997>>12682060Last time I went to the dump they explicitly told me I wasn't allowed to take anything, they had a bin full of CRTs with a PC Trinitron right on top
>>12683852>Interested in learning more?No.
>>12683980CRTs can last a long ass time. They were made durable and reliable. 99% of the issues that some CRTs have now are super simple to fix like a transistor replacement or something along those lines. The only way for a CRT to die is if the tube itself has finally had enough.
>>12684291It's wild how many working CRTs end up there. They're gay about letting people take them but sometimes the worker will look the other way if you ask first.
>>12683852Yes
Just bought this sexy matchline for 30€ from a dentist who wanted to get rid of his stuffgot influenced by some know-it-all anon who said earlier that one of the most important things to seek in a CRT is the screen size so I got rid of my 14" trinitron for a 21" and damn anon was right, it's incredible, the image is stunning and the integrated 2.1 sound system is sick toothanks anon
>>12685643Nice. I really need to figure out how to get a crt finally. Too many scalpers around here snatching and relisting all the obvious ones for hundreds of dollars. The second I see any listing say "CRT" I know to immediately disregard it because theyre going to ask for some retarded price like $200+
My first Trinitron :D
>>12685652How do you guys find these or are you just buying them off ebay
>>12685723I used Facebook Marketplace
>>12685723Some people just get really lucky and live in an area where they're part and parcel on Facebook. I've heard that you can sometimes find them at estate sells too.
>>12684364There's a bit more to it than that but yeah.Components that are hard to replace and are bad to have fail on you:The picture tube (obviously)The flyback transformer. They're not made anymore and there are a lot of different ones made for different sets, and they're not really interchangeable.Jungle ICs. Not made anymore, hard to get and are a pain to install if you do.Horizontal output transistor. These aren't just a typical transistor. They need to generate a ~1000V sawtooth wave at tens of thousands of hertz, to hundreds of thousands of hertz for high end PC monitors. Often not interchangeable from one set to another. All that said, if they're not abused, CRTs can last a LONG time.
>>12686405Is it conceivable to make a universal jungle IC? If yes then I can see such a project happening at some point. As already discussed on /vr/ a million times, picture tubes won't ever be produced in meaningful numbers. Flybacks who knows, maybe someone will come up with a programmable universal replacement. Not sure about the HOT, but I guess there's nothing stopping the Chinese from producing those, if there's demand. The interest in CRTs has gone from almost nothing to hundreds of thousands of people in the last 10 years or so, I'm sure there will be efforts to keep this tech going
The damn geometry and overscan on my 2000s Samsung has finally gotten to me. I don't like playing on it anymore. But goddamn every other crt around is overpriced as Hell. Living in Seattle is rough cause you have plenty of CRT options; but everyone knows what they can get away with charging for them.I just want something decent and with component input, I don't even want anything beyond consumer grade. If you're gonna charge me 500$ I may as well suck it up and get a Retrotink for fucks sake.
>>12685723Most people buy one and then lie saying they found it on the side of the road for free because they're really embarrassed to admit how much they spent on the set
>>12685726How much did you pay? Marketplace in my area is not cheap.
>>12686562$100, plus $40 for delivery since our schedules didn't line up
>>12686417Sure, but the demand isn't there. There are already universal crt kits from China that include all of the electricals and they work.
>>12686813Shit, that'd be like $250 here. Gratz on the find.
>>12683852Various PS2 games operate using interlaced rendering. Forcing progressive would completely destroy the graphics, it would not be just a bit worse it would be practically unplayable. Besides that progressive is typically never going to be worse.
Why does 240p 60fps at 120hz have more motion blur than 240p 60fps at 60hz when you run a PC CRT in 240p120 mode?
>>12685647>>12685723Got it on Leboncoin, basically the french craigslist; relatively easy to come across vendors not knowing any better depending on where you live.Although we also have our fair share of scalpers, it's not anywhere as bad as what you guys seem to experience in 'murrica, I wonder if your influencers are to blame.pic: inside the Matchline, 30-40 years of dusty deposits. >>12685723I have around 100 crts at this point and i have only paid money for maybe 10 of them. You literally do just come across them when you are not expecting to. I drive by two almost daily that have been sitting outside for months, but are slightly too much of a pain for me to stop and just take them to add to the pile.
If you have a 13-20" Trinitron, there's a guy on ebay selling new old stock RM-Y156 remotes for 10 bucks shipped. Nice having a fresh factory 'mote

>>12687261For motion clarify refresh rate much exactly match frame rate. Frames are point samples that much be displayed at only a single instant of time. At 120Hz the frame is displayed twice at two different times, resulting in a double image. At 180Hz you would see three overlapped images. As refresh rate goes to infinity more duplicates would fill in until it becomes a solid blur, which is what a sample and hold display does, sample and hold is like having an infinite refresh rate.

My Sony Trinitron has some weird distorsion going on (mostly noticeable during black screens) and the speakers have a weird buzzing sound that never goes away. Not to mention the geometry is all kinds of fucked. It's actually amazing I enjoy playing games on it so much; most CRTfags obsess over details like these and don't play games.
Where do I get one if Facebook Marketplace isn't an option bros
Everything before Dreamcast I would say is best with composite cables. The little blur it adds to the colors gives it a pleasant extra texture and detail. For the 6th gen it's a little more ambiguous as 3D resolution had improved greatly and some games were starting to support progressive scan and widescreen, but I will say I prefer composite for PS2 because it had the jaggiest and blurriest output of that generation already, and clearer cables just highlight its limitations.
>>12680019Can it die after I get one at least? I finally moved somewhere with a basement.

I want to get a CRT display to emulate old games on my PC. Do I get a TV or a monitor? I'll be getting it locally so I'm interested in the cheap common stuff.
Back in the pre-poverty era, enthusiasts looked and desired sets with RGB for crystal clear graphics to mimic the arcade experience, waterfalls you see for only one second be damned. After the poverty era set in and broke niggas could only afford RF/Composite only sets, they now cope with the narrative of it being the real way to play video games.
>>12696387Depends on what you mean by old games. If they're 240p/480i console games then a standard 15kHz TV is better.
>>12696531Mainly PS1, PS2, GC and PC games from the 90s. I forgot to mention that I'm europoor so no 60Hz TVs for me
>>12696529Cheap televisions through RGB are nice too, not as sharp look as a high tvl tube but a charming look never the less
>>12696749Another cheapo tv through rgb
>>12695364Maybe for movies or some shit.
I'm starting to think this mythical CRT warehouse in Massachusetts is an AI scam. All this hoopla about it after it happened, not before. And no notice what-so-ever of another date for sales in the future despite there supposedly being thousands and thousands more TVs there.
>>12680017>ordered one of these off of eBay for my Magnavox 32"What am I in for? Haven't watched cable in a long time and I'd like to have something in my room for playing background noise that isn't any of my other entertainment setups.
>>12697416bro I'm mythically warehousing CRTs rn
>>12697416It's not that hard to believe, some guy was probably paid to take e-waste away and then just stuck it all in a place where he didnt have to actually pay for disposal and pocketed all the cash
>>12696749>Cheap televisions through RGBUnknown to Americans unless they can read schematics and use a soldering iron, hence the rf/composite meme cope.
I'm trying RGB on SNES for the first time and it's really kind of jarring. All the reds and oranges are just so intense it's kind of off putting. Is that normal with RGB or is this a tv issue?
>>12698319super nintendo has aggressive color biases, I prefer something like Genesis which is more neutral.
>>12697858Disappointment because analong tv signals haven't been a thing in over 20 years
>>12697858assuming this is a digital antenna you would still need a converter box for an older TV to make it analog, if it's analog antenna than you just won't pick up any signals at all
>>12697416>>12698210That just sounds like my house.
>>12696529Why would i care about "the arcade experience" look for console games?
>>12681997Dump rescue anon here. Went back today and got this Samsung crt. No component input but has s-video at least. there was also a small box next to it with an Xbox series S/X controller so I grabbed that too.
>>12698936Insanely clean inside for being 26 years old
>>12698952uh, was this even used? insane find.
>>12698962Right? I've never found one this clean before.
>>12698965I did once. A mid 90s trinitron with s-video that was in some old peoples basement forever and basically never used. Unfortunately, it has a bad case of brittle plastic so I don't think it's gonna survive me moving it ever again
>>12698967I've heard about brittle sonys but have never experienced that here in the Southeast. Maybe humid enough to prevent it. Are you in an arid climate?
>>12698923>Says while playing The King of Fighters '95 for the Sega Saturn
The board is /tv/. Someone is berating another guy for using blu-rays sourced from the original film print instead of the VHS copy that hides the stuntman's face. It never happened. But in a parallel universe...
>>12698974Nah I'm in the midwest so actually we get a lot of humidity. I did a little research (aka half assed googling) and it seems to be a somewhat common thing with Trinitrons of the mid 90s. From what I recall reading it had to do with the plastic mix they used.
>>12698978That sort of thing does happen, actually. You'd see it more if there was a /film/ board like /vr/ is to /v/.
i want to a CRT but i don't want to spend a lot of money on one.i would have kept the one i had in the mid 2000s but my mother forced me to get rid of it after i got a hd flat screeni don't like giving tech away
>>12699042i want a CRT*
>>12698978The analogy works, but we're the blu-ray guys and the people playing with bilinear filtering stretched to 16:9 on LCD are the VHS guys.
>>12699030Some low-budget horror does look better in low-quality VHS compared to the original film.
>>12698974I was moving a trinitron once and set it down briefly on a corner angle while still keeping it balanced and i guess all the weight on one point was too much and cracked it. I tried salvaging it but then it seemed like the entire thing was just breaking apart without much effort.
>>12698978But what tvs and inputs are both individuals using?
Today I got a 20" RCA TruFlat CRT TV/DVD for free from my daughter's daycare. Everything works perfectly, including the built-in DVD player. Only downside is that the remote is missing. Had two composite inputs, one component input, and one RF input. No S-Video.RCA for whatever reason still has 4 replacement remotes in stock via Amazon? Or I can get a $7 programmable remote for it. Looks pointless to have a remote though due to how many buttons are on the front of the TV itself.Unit is also new enough that it will read CD-Rs full of mp3s, WMA, MPEG-4, VCD, DIVX, and JPEGs.
>>12699406These late-era 20"ers with component are really nice. It's not common on that size before the mid-late 2000s in my experience.
>>12699406Also you may want a remote for use of the service menu. A truflat that late w/ the SDTV logo most likely has a service menu.
>>12699406Those are pretty nice. I have the 14" silver one with s-video instead of component. Be advised that the microswitches for the buttons are all but guaranteed to go bad and start triggering random functions. You can get replacements on digikey.
>>12698936Teach me your ways. I'm trying to find a CRT but I'm a bit picky, the only acceptable one I've seen on Marketplace is just a little too expensive.
All you need is rf
>>12699572Not much to it other than making the effort to go to public recycling centers that accept TVs. Don't expect to find desirable models every time, though it does happen. Grab whatever's there that looks decent to rescue it from the scrapper. I give away/sell those to fund other purchases. Oh and when you go, do your normal recycling at the same time so it doesn't look sus to the employees. The ones in my city don't really care but it can vary.
>>12698967Purely anecdotal but from personal experiences I have noticed that it's mostly the 2000s plastic that becomes brittle.
>>12680017Flat Sonys are known to be the worst due to geometry issues. Cillindrical or all-round trinitrons were better.
>>12696387You should just use a CRT shader on your emulator, and an OLED monitor if you need deep blacks.
>>12698965Underneath many of those electrolitycs you might find a not so clean surprise. But you would need to desolder them to see it.
>>12698952>25.000 V>The entire tube acts as a capacitor, holds charge for days>Lead and toxic dust inside>Can implode and then explode>Would emit X-rays if not for the shieldingReminder than CRTs are the most hazardous appliance ever made, and the average electronics hobbyist should refrain from opening one and fuck around, even if it is turned off.
>>12699864They're probably fine but I'll pull the board out and look closer. I have an ESR meter if I suspect any caps are bad.>>12699875Only basic precautions and common sense are needed. Most of the 90s and 00s TVs have bleed off resistors. Once unplugged the charge is gone in minutes. Discharging the tube manually is easy as an additional precaution. It's not nearly as dangerous as you're making it seem.
>>12694169pay the tax
>>12695869t. never heard of PAL60
>>12697858looks like one of the old analog antennas. those were switched off over a decade ago here.I have a digital one that needs no power source and works fine.
>>12699875Considering the majority of slobs once working as crt repairmen were pretty shit at their job, i think a hobbyist with actual interest in this stuff will be at low risk.
>>12698518>>12700362Guys, please, there is no such thing as an "analog antenna." It's just an antenna. A "rabbit ears" style antenna like >>12697858 is still equally suited to receiving transmissions today, on the frequencies it was designed for. The straight, extendable antennas on hinges are designed to pick up VHF, and the circular loop part are designed to pick up UHF. Both VHF and UHF are still used for digital television broadcasts in North America (although you should look up the physical frequencies of the channels in your area. In mine, there are no channels on VHF, everything is in the UHF range, so you don't need the "ears"). The VHF antennas work best if you match the length to the channel you are trying to pick up (longest position for channel 2, shorter positions for higher channels up to 13) and position them so that they make a right angle to each other. The UHF loop works best with its broad side facing towards the direction of the transmitter you are trying to pick up, or else bent down flat, parallel to the ground, like a dish (this cuts the signal strength in half compared to the upright configuration, but makes the antenna omnidirectional, useful if you are within range of two different media markets in different directions). It is correct that you need a "converter" box to see digital television on an old TV that only has an analog tuner. These converters are really just "set top boxes," digital tuners with an analog video output on "channel 3," that usually had their own remote control like a cable box. The government actually gave these away for free for a few yeas around the time of the transition, so in my experience they are still easy to find at thrift stores for a few bucks.
>>12699875Not even remotely the most hazardous. Like, consider something actually hazardous. A Microwave oven will destroy your eyes if its safety switches malfunction such that it remains on with the door open. And if you were to touch the high voltage power supply inside, you would be dead before you hit the floor.

>>12680189They will seethe, but this is true. Composite/RF or bust. If you want clarity, just play digital or emulate. You're missing the point of playing retro.
>>12700915You only play systems for children and extrapolating them as the entirety of retro.
This general sucks now because you're only allowed to have one single ssetup that happens to align perfectly with what broke niggas can afford, and deviation from it gets you berated for not being a true connoisseur. I have more important things to do so from now on>/CRT/i;op:only

>>12700476Literally me but with any CRT I was looking at on Facebook.
hey gang, im having this strange clicking issue with my CRT. it makes this quick clicking noise while it's plugged in and turned off. when it's on the noise stops. it's in my man cave where its hot while im not in there but when i am the ac's turned on and it's cold. i didnt notice any noise coming from it until about an hour and 30 minutes of me chilling in there with the AC blasting. I heard temperature change could be making it make this noise. anyone have any idea what it could be? the unit was in storage from a guy I bought it from for i dont know how long so im sure it was unused for quite some time. I've been told that it sounds like relay clicking and that it sounds like something may be wrong with my circuit. would anyone have any idea what repair costs might be looking like? I want to take it into a shop to get it refurbished as soon as possible. model is a Sanyo DS27930 btw
>>12701339samefag here. based on my research this seems to be a common issue with Sanyo sets. anyone else with a Sanyo experience this? did your set have any issues aside from this noise?
>>12701339AI chatbots will give you the most common reasons and things to look at for a continuously clicking relay. Likely an issue in the power supply circuit. Capacitors are a good place to start. Sanyo didn't use the best components to begin with. Can you work on it yourself?
>>12700429I already got shocked by the high voltage cap in one of those, that's why I'm warning the anons. These caps kill. I'm only writing this because the Lord spared me.
>>12701564discharge your shit and she'll be right
>>12700479Mine is atrocious and is one of the old cillindrical model. I already messed with the service menu to no avail. I concluded that the combination of a side speaker and some badly positioned mag strips are ruining the top left corner geometry. While it could be minimized by manually adjusting the strips with the monitor open and turned on, I'm not planning on risking mi life further. I could sent it to a CRT technician but in my area they are all dead or retired.
Man I got like 4 CRTs but I don't really like any of them, they definitely don't get me any clout points on the internet. Wish At least one of them had component/VGA, some of them don't even have composite so I've had to use VCRs as adapters before.
>>12701923Throw them into the ocean and get something you like. Don't sleep on 90s CRTs that are RGB moddable if you're inclined to work on them yourself.
>>12694169Update from this anon. I talked my mother into Marketplace and got one
I recently got into CRTs because i couldnt stand the motion clarity issues on modern displays, even BFI couldnt really fix it on sidescrollers.I now have- IBM P260- 2x LaCie Electron 22 Blue IV- Some random 14inch consumer TV- Commodore 1942 (bi-scan)- Sony PVM 20M2E- Dell M993s (average PC monitor)I could get more, i could get another IBM P260 as a backup, or find some other model for more options/variety, but i think i got enough CRTs to last me. right?

>>12701570Thats hard to do when you ignore they exist. The high voltage caps inside microwaves don't look like normal caps at all. And you would need a huge resistor (one of the white squared ones) to bleed these caps. Its not a part the average hobbyist has at hand. And no, screwdrivers are not safe in this case.
>>12704835my apologies I thought you were talking about CRT TVs

>>12704835>a huge resistor (one of the white squared ones) to bleed these caps. Its not a part the average hobbyist has at hand.Really? People wouldn't have power resistors lying around? Or like, how much power are you thinking?
Dump rescue anon here with another update. Went to the recycling center again and saw a full pallet of 4x 21" Hitachi CRT monitors and 2x 20" Symphonic TVs. Unfortunately they were already wrapped in plastic for transport so I couldn't save them. On the side of the pallet was this 32" sanyo ds32224 flat CRT with component input so I grabbed that. Fortunately it doesn't weigh that much maybe 100 lbs. It does not power on so I'll have to troubleshoot that.
>>12704597hey I just realized I need a remote. will any universal remote do, or do I have to find one for older tvs?
