1. The N-Shitty-Four hardware has multiple bottlenecks for no reason that we dont' need anymore.
2. Multiple N-Shitty-Four games are very poorly coded and held together with clue.

DK64 being one of the worst examples and one badly needing a recomp. It's like some 6 fps per second chugging along on original hardware. Out of all the N64 games, it should have been outright cancelled and pushed to the 'Cube. It was so bad, and turned people off so much, it utterly killed the DK series for almost a decade AND killed the "Collect-a-thon" style of gameplay.

DK64 is like the platonic form of the public's understanding of what N64 game is like. It's blurry, it has low frame rate, it has god awful textures, it has horrible fog and draw distances.

Remember also that decomp/recomp means that you have an easier time accessing the game's data and manipulating it. So someone could make a remix of the game, or a full blown sequel that refines the gameplay removing all the shit.

Recompile (decompile, really) is about being able to use native hardware quirks as well as modding and other things. The most obvious is recompile to port to dreamcast.

Consider a weaker handheld that may struggle with a N64 emulator, it might play a recompile for its hardware. This is exactly what happens with the dreamcast ports, they can't run a N64 emulator, but can play a recompiled "n64 game".

1. FPGAs are emulators, they're just lower-latency than software emulation
2. Native ports (recomps) are also lower-latency than software emulation, plus they are easier to modify and make a great experience on PC hardware (e.g. mouse support)

Stuff like vine swinging breaks and some of the minigames become nearly impossible. Even on real hardware shit in the game gets broken like the heart inside the mechanical fish that runs too slowly if you have the sniper scope upgrade. I wonder how a recomp would even effect stuff like that

N64 recomps have advantages over emulation, like being able to handle trilinear filtering more reliably, use RT64 to do smooth framerate interpolation, running code natively, fine-tuning, dynamic resolution, reduced performance overhead.
There's a bunch of things the N64 does that's pretty expensive in emulation, and hard to fix otherwise.
Plus it makes for a nice modding framework, and you can go the extra mile and do raytracing and shit.
You can modernise control schemes to work for standard X-Input controllers too, though the C-buttons still make controller mapping on a per-game basis tricky to this day, due to how some games use it like a 6-button controller, but many games use it for camera control or a secondary directional button set (like Mischief Makers).

The trilinear or three-point texture filtering, an often cited example of why it matters is the side of the stair case in Kakariko Village, since they take advantage of it to display a smooth angled texture.
If you play attention to the HUD though, you can see that the button label text is specifically designed around the triangular filtering, as well as the inventory icons being angled diagonally to look smoother.
