What was your reaction to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus?
>>
>>12684004
cool game
>>
I have bad memories of ico because my disc was scratched and id get stuck on the same loading screen a few minutes in
>>
>>12684004
>Shadow of the Colossus
I rented it when the dudebros on G4 shilled it constantly and thought it was le deep but it was just dogshit
>>
>>12684004
kicking rad
>>
>>12684009
those niggers were wrong about everything.
>>
>SotC
god damn this game looks beautiful. god damn this framerate is ASS
>Ico
goddamn this game sucks fucking ASS
>>
Horrible
>>
>Ico
Fucking boring
>SotC
Cool game but not fun to play at all
>>

Only had an xbox so I first encountered SotC in the upstairs office of a chiropractor's, my friend's dad's workplace. Blew my mind, had a certain scale and grandiosity to it that I hadn't experienced before from a video game. Still a favorite of mine. Only played Ico later on the HD collection and also loved it for its similar, but quieter, mood and world.

shadow of the colossus involves a lot of walking around while bored, doing stupid things in the hope you wake up the colossus. You already road for maybe 10 minutes or more doing nothing just to get there...

and then you get to the fights, and they require you to precisely figure out what the developer wanted you to do. That's a huge time waster as well. It's a very irritating game despite some interesting moments
>>
>>12684004
Played Ico when it was brand new, easily the best looking game at the time. Played SotC after it had been out for 2 years and it completely blew my mind and became one of the best games of all time on the spot.

I found SOTC to be really refreshing when I played it as a teen in the seventh gen, at that point I was already tired of really contrived treadmill type activities in open world games and the plainness of just venturing out to find the next colossus domain was like a weight taken off my back. as far as the bosses go I thought it was alright, climbing isn't the most fun mechanic in the world but I think the way you need to approach each boss in their arena had enough variety to make it work.
when I played ICO I was in the exact right mood to vibe with the aesthetic so I can't be sure how objective my thoughts are, played over the course of a few summer nights in my early college years. I'm a sucker for satisfying fluid animation though I'll say that.
>>
>>12684004
I didn't know much about them before I played.
>ICO
I was a huge Tomb Raider fan so I loved it for a lot of the same reasons.
>Shadow of the Colossus
There was a specific moment that completely blew my mind. When I got to the flying sand colossus fight I shot an arrow at it from like a mile away and to my surprise the game didn't just phase the arrow out of existence because it was too far, it actually hit. Just the fact that it kept track of a projectile over that distance was something. So there was that, and then grabbing hold of the giant bird for the first time.
I feel bad for anyone who plays this game after reading a bunch of hype about it online, because there was nothing like it at the time and that aspect is honestly lost now but the hype remains, which seems to lead to a lot of disappointment.

Yeah that was my issue with the game. People liken it to a puzzle game but in some ways it's a maze navigation game.

I still like it overall but it was very overhyped and janky. Btw I played the PS4 remaster and idgaf what anyone thinks because framerate matters more than a couple of gay shadows or "soul"

"holy fucking kino"

I played ICO for the first time quite late, in 2020's and found it aged quite badly imho. Didn't feel like I missed much, and it reminded me of a better game - Sands of Time
>>
I thought it looked cool, played the demo disc with it before it came out. Thought it wasn’t worth my time. Boring. Everything is made to seem natural but everything is scripted events. Idk. Boring. Looks cool though.
>>
I was pretty young probably around 11. Had heard about sotc forever and couldnt wait to play it. ... major letdown. It felt miserable to play. Like everything was wading through mud. A permanent underwater level vibe. I probably played 30 min tops. Coming from Jak and Daxter and mx unleashed - the movement was unbearable
>>
>>12684004
after seeing both in EGM over and over I thought more games would pull the scaling giant kaiju or monster more often
>>
>>12684004
I was honestly confused. I only played them when the ps3 collection came out (on my brand new sony 3d tv!) and I couldn't understand where all the praise was coming from
ico is an escort mission stretched out to a full game. I thought we all agreed escort missions were shit. oh, it also has some ocarina of time puzzles and some climbing puzzles, I guess
shadow of the colossus definitely has an intense and dense atmosphere. it was blowing my mind when I played it. but the gameplay is awkward, clunky, unfun. some of the boss/puzzle solutions are painful, a lot of the sequences are annoying. I got through because I wanted to experience more of the world, but as a game it was absolute fucking shit
they are probably the worst games I ever finished. I wanted to give them a fair shot, and they definitely are beautiful, but they're not good games

it's a completely different art direction. it's a matter of taste, of course, but if you enjoyed the art style of the first, the remake is very disappointing
the environments are ok, I think, it's a very pretty game and when just riding around and listening to the soundtrack
but the main character is sad. it looks like a daz3d model

Was hyped for Ico because I was subscribed to EGM and they shilled about what a masterpiece it was and then I rented it and stopped playing after about 90 minutes because it was fucking boring.
I thought SotC was cool for the first couple fights and then I realized the entire game is holding R1 and stabbing the giant glowing stab me here sign and dropped it as well.
Two terrible games that are mainly responsible for the huge influx of gay boring "art" games that followed in the next few years

"Why is it running so badly?" "Why does everyone act like this is the best the PS2 has to offer when it’s just an empty world?"

I was young but I swear I was absolutely blown away, even though I had fought giant enemies before in God of War. When I climbed on the first guy's back and I could see the colossus trying to shake me off I swear I had an amazing feeling of wow that's cool. I was hooked for sure when I reached #5 which is the giant bird and flying over his arena gave me an awesome feeling too. Even though everything was silent and barren, I still felt like the game had secrets to discover. Getting lost in the forest was annoying. Also memorable was #13 the flying sand worm. One more memory I have is of killing the lizards by stepping on them with my horse and by focusing the light onto the ground and it just so happened that a lizard got in the way and I killed it. I thought it was the coolest game ever and I still have nostalgia for it to this day.

Speak for yourself. I thought the PS4 remake was great and I do agree the character looks bad but I loved how realistic the rocks looked compared to the original.

>I couldn't understand where all the praise was coming from
To understand game critics you have to get high off your ass first. Like near incapacitated high. Then boot up the game. Then everything they say makes sense, all the praise all the criticisms everything.

>ICO
Didn't ever see it until the PS3 bundle, I played it and it was pretty bad, but the music and visuals were pleasing. 4/10 maybe 3/10
>SotC
Was pretty impressed seeing it on the PS2, not as impressed when playing it with the framerate issues getting really bad in some areas. Even still the game had some really good visuals and music but this time they had a good game to go with it. All the real issues I had with it were related to the hardware really. The fights are all fun and while some are worse than others I don't think there is a single fight in the game I didn't enjoy, some having multiple ways to get the job done others being more on-rails it's a really good variety in both gameplay and design. The story of this game I actually bothered to pay attention to and I felt good about it. Overall a really solid game, one of the better ones on the PS2, easy 8/10 for me, if it had all the technical issues solved I would bump it to a 9.

Another thing I just want to tack on here is I spent hours and hours discovering secrets and just exploring in SotC, I did not do this in ICO and I am not sure if it also is full of neat little secrets and stuff, but I definitely loved getting powerful enough to climb the tower in SotC.

Everytime SotC comes up the seething Nintensissies come in like flies

At first I found the lack of guidance and unintuitive nature of the game confusing. Then, I adapted and was able to play the game effectively, but I still found it quite underwhelming. I kept with it, largely because the game was short and easy and I was fairly close to beating it anyway. When I got to the ending, I was very emotionally moved and I ended up feeling like it had become one of my favorite games of all time, despite all of my earlier dislike of it.
>SotC
I had the ending spoiled for me years before I played the game. I found the gameplay utterly uncompelling past the first couple fights. I'd spend fifteen minutes or more on one stage of one fight because I couldn't figure out the one stupid thing the game wanted me to do and wouldn't let me progress until I'd done specifically that. I quickly lost all enthusiasm to continue and still haven't finished it.
