Tell me what you're currently playing and some good and bad things about it. Anything NES and forward.

>fuck stupid ass retarded jannies
>pic unrelated

just played a bit of Toy Story Racer on my PS1.
cool little game if you like Toy Story.

also played a decent amount of Vanark today on the PS1 as well. it's an interesting rail shooter heavily inspired by Starfox 64. had never heard of it before but have been exploring PS1 games since i never had one back in the day.
>>
>>12684051
I've been revisiting Starcraft. Real-time strategy games help me unwind after work.
>Good.
It holds up nicely to this day. It can be nostalgia but I'm having a blast trying to play each map quickly by using keyboard shortcuts and such, as opposed to turtling as I do regularly. I also can enjoy its references/sources of inspiration more as an adult.
>Bad
Mostly units with pathfinding issues. Also, Dragoons are too damn chunky; I've worked around it by parking them on an open area while dragging enemy units around as they try to chase a couple of Zealots. Always press H with firing squads.
>>
>>12684051
Kirby's Dream Land. FUCK THIS GAME. It only took me about 30 minutes to beat normal mode, then maybe another 45 to get to the last level in extra mode, but just so far I've spent about 3 hours trying to beat the final boss in extra mode. This is exactly everything that's wrong with these shitty old games. The difficulty isn't spread out evenly. You just get one massive fucking difficulty spike that results in you playing the same 2% of the game for 99% of your total play time. Fuck this game, fuck the entire Kirby series (I'm already writing bad reviews even for the ones I've never played) and fuck anyone and everyone who has ever recommended this game to me. I FUCKING HATE THIS PIECE OF HORRIBLE SHIT.
>>
>>12684108
Ok I finally did it. kek that wasn't even that hard. I LOVE Kirby now.
>>

>fatal frame 2 crimson butterfly
Its kino, the twins are super cute, but there seem to be a lot of missables that spawn seemingly at random even in places you been to multiple times. I've been to the first house on 3 separate occasions after that part was over and keep finding new things that weren't there before. Kind of neat but also kind of frustratratibg to explore the same environments I already went through multiple times, and I might still be missing a lot of content even with such dilligent exploration.
>Yakuza 1 (ps2 version)
Beat it a couple days ago actually. It was kino.. The story was really great and Haruka made this game peak dadcore. The side quests are poorly designed though, they're easily missable, easily failed, and the locker keys can also be missed very easily. Overall 9/10 single player, 4/10 side content.
>>
>>12684174
the Kirby games are great, they can definitely be deceptively tricky at times too though. i played a lot of the snes kirby games as well as Kirby 64

good: the game
bad: getting raped by stage 6
>>
Playing thru the Call of Duty 2 (PC) campaign on Veteran. Still holds up, fantastic campaign, and a very fun challenge on the hardest difficulty
>>
FF7 for the first time
Good: materia system is pretty neat
Bad: the fear of save game corruption on my memory card
>>
I am replaying some childhood games on PS1

>Alladin Nasira's revenge
holy fuck controls filter me hard in platforming sections

>Tigger's Honey Hunt
Very fun 2.5d game and surprisingly well optimized on PS1 even if I played it on PC originally.

Up next will be Asterix game
>>
>>12684051
Grandia Xtreme on PS2
>Good
Battle system fun as fuck, lots of cool items you can get
>Bad
Mediocre story but it has its charms, Real grindy

Dude this shit is the best. I can't fucking believe how much I like it. I don't like Mario, other than Mario 64. This shit is so good. I love how you have to steal Fanto's key and book it. That shit is hilarious! And amazing. I kneel, SMB2 bros

After being done with PSX Ridge Racer, I've moved to Ridge Racer Revolution. The expert course busts my balls so far, very challenging. Dunno how to feel about the game yet, I think I like the vibe of the first one better, although soundtrack may be better on this one overall. Gameplay wise, the drifting mechanic feels less natural here and you're penalized more for using it, with big losses in speed.
>>
Xenogears
>good
music, mech fighting, the mechs and customizing them really makes me want a full size action figure, say a foot and a half tall maybe with a spring loaded projectile launcher in the wrist? overworld navigation is fun too, dont even mind the mech platforming levels, they're not horrible.
>bad
encounter rate is a little overtuned in some of these looong hallways levels.
>>
>>12684553
Drifting is gay anyway
>>
Ecco Tides of Time on Sega CD. A beautiful, atmospheric, melancholic game, but at times very difficult, sometimes even setting you back two levels. I'm currently stuck on the Gravitorbox boss. It's just a giant fucking ball that's just trying to slam you into wall
>>
>>12684051
Started playing Spyro on PS1 last night, had only ever played like 30 minutes of it a million years ago when it was new.
It's a pretty cool game, has been fun and seems like it's aged well. Fun to just run/glide around, the game has nice movement, graphics, and world design. Haven't really come across anything bad yet maybe some might think it's too easy but I'm still near the beginning I think.
>>
>>12684195
>the game
fuck you, I lost
>>

Playing through Zeliard on MS-DOS. Just made it to the sixth area.
>Good
Nice sprite work, pretty good music, hitboxes for your weapon are a little bigger than you might think, magic is simple but works well enough, level design is surprisingly easy to navigate despite the levels looping both vertically and horizontally. Difficulty curve makes sense and slowly increases to introduce new ideas.
>Bad
non smooth screen scrolling, but that's just how it was in 1990 on DOS or 1987 on PC88. This can make jumps feel really awkward. Ice physics in the fourth area are especially fucky because of it, though you do get boots part way through it that remove slipping on ice while worn which is nice.
>>
I'm between games right now. The good? It's exciting to try to find a new game to play. The bad? There is no game to play currently when I'm bored.
>>
There's literally only 20 different people that browse /vr/.

Auster Daddy, Onimai Daddy, Sega System Daddy - I love you. Forever. Meow :3
>>
I'm playing Fatal Frame again to unlock all the battle missions.
>good
I love everything about the camera, and the atmosphere and design of the ghosts are really unsettling. In fact, part of the fun of replaying the game is upgrading the camera to its maximum potential.
>bad
It's a pain in the ass to capture some of the ghosts who appear only for a few seconds, like the kid who is running around the house. Also, fuck all wandering monks.
>>12684185
How does Fatal Frame II compare to the original game? It seems to be the most popular game in the series.

> Kingdom of Loathing was released in early 2003,
the browser game , made for Win2K platform. it still works and got new content added every year.

screenshot was me beating the not-pokeymon challenge version of the game.

Not that anon, but it looks better generally, it has a better color palette, and has a better story, though I like FF1's plot as well. 1 runs at 60fps though and 2 is locked to 30.
Very good, getting SS ranks is fun, play the the xbox version if possible, that also goes for FF1.
>>
>>12687831
>bad things
it's literally all puns and some people might hate stickmen, reading and a "stamina"(use up 1 Adventure point for most actions and battles) system.
>>
>>12684051
Since Star Fox just got a remake I played the original and it’s pretty amazing. I started the remake but even w the shiny new graphics it’s imo not as good as the original. Both games are fun tho.
The good: it’s fucking Star Fox 64. Replaying it after all these years it’s got iconic music, the gameplay is extremely satisfying and fun, and the story is pretty rad especially getting voice acting on the 64. It’s obviously heavily inspired by Star Wars in a lot of ways I never noticed back in the day.
The Bad: your ai wingmates are dumb as rocks and it’s also super easy to shoot them on accident making getting to the more difficult runs (I think to access the harder routes they have to be alive every mission) pretty challenging but I’ve only run through it once. Plan on looking at a guide now to see what I need to do to get the harder routes and the true final ending.
>>
>>12684582
The mech platforming gets a bad rap mostly due to one specific level.
>>
>>12687831
Holy shit I forgot this game even existed. A lot of these references are so old you have to be at least 89 to understand them. Billy Idol's White Wedding? Who the fuck even know this shit?

Beat Ridge Racer R4 for the first time the other day.

Good:
>The music is excellent
>I liked most of the tracks, I really liked the first one and the night time city one with the canal and you get some airtime when you go down a certain part of the track
>The lighting when you go into tunnels/drive at night is really impressive, it's baked in obviously but it oozes style
>The menu's, bright yellow is a bold choice but they make it work and it's iconic
>It's just a very meditative and relaxing experience, it's such a tight game, no fat on the bone, you just accelerate, break or drift and it's all done with two buttons

Bad:
>Maybe I'm just shit but you can only drift for a certain amount of time, so if you go round a hairpin bend you have to "re-engage" the drift two or three times
>There's 14 music tracks in the game but if that was closer to 30 I'd give the game another point out of ten
>Drifting is fun but often counter productive to getting fast records in Time Attack
>>
I'm playing Dragon Warrior Monsters on the GBC again. I loved that game as a kid and I love it now.

yea i was one of the """unlucky""" that got that, on the solid recommendation of the EB games employee, because pokeymans blue was sold out. wasnt even mad. its like a streamlined JRPG, with all of the fat trimmed off. just get monsters, breed monsters, crawl dungeons, kill bosses, win tournaments, then occasionally talk to an NPC and open up more of the tree.

the way mons go "feral" after being on the farm too long keeps you from ever feeling like youre treading water, like a lot of other grind-heavy RPGs might feel in late-game. you just get mons up to a lvl where you have all the skills you want, then breed em and they lvl up super fast again. or even better, you eventually realize bird types can just be grinded into infinity in like a single dungeon, and start using that to create literal boss monsters out of a fucking slime lol. when pokemon introduced breeding i remember thinking how enormously shit it was compared to DWM
>>
>>12689538
The second one was even better, honestly. It added just enough plot to not bog it down, and the random key system...I had over a thousand hours on DWM2 on my original cart. I'm pissed we didn't get the remakes, but luckily there's an unofficial english patch. They're not bad, I do like how I can keep breeding the same monster and get an X or XX version that's just higher rank and stats for those. Joker and Joker 2 were okay. The Dark Prince one is pretty good. I just miss how in the GBC ones you could break the shit out of it and get crazy monsters nearly instantly.
>>
>>12684051
>Pokemon Firered
I haven't played any Pokemon stuff since Blue back when it came out, and it's pretty comfy going "back but better." Playing on an R36S so I'm getting full nostalgic feels in my hands and it's a good time all around.
>Bad stuff

Currently Sega Rally '95 in the thread for that, have an FFIX run going so I guess that's the main thing right now but it's like my 20th playthrough, played several rounds of Star Fox 64 this week.
Just gaming comfort food, nothing worth talking about; you know what these games are.
>>
>>12684051
Just beat Zelda 2.

Good:
>Combat system
>Leveling up system
>You need to get better at the game AND improve your stats, you cannot rely on leveling alone
>Large open world
>Almost everything

Bad:
>Need to RTFM
>Some cryptic bullshit
>Weird color palette looks like shit and Atari tier lot of the time
>Final dungeon, but the fact you need to do that plus double final boss all in one credit
>Link sprite looks kind of retarded
>Have to start from the Palace when you die/load game
>>
>>12689438
i liked some of Billy I's "punkpop" songs.
>inb6 banned for /mu/ puns in /vr/

>>12684051
I'm playing a lot of galaga (fds port), I suckk ass in it but I'm having fun. I started playing as 'research' because i gamedev in my freetime but it is still hard

i'm also playing the decomp of star fox, I didn't care less about the remake but I tried Assault the last moth and I find it very interesting, and I wanted more, maybe I'll play some non-retro star fox game (3ds and wii u)

You must be a special kind of retard since I explained in the very post you're replying to that I breezed through both modes and only got stuck on the hard mode final boss, which is a huge difficulty spike, and I posted video proof of beating it in the very next post.
>>
Gun on PS2. One of you guys were talking about it recently.
>>
>>12694648
I remember reading a review for that in a magazine. One of the taglines under a screenshot was something like "A couple bullets and the bad guys fly apart like God didn't do their stitching up tight enough".
>>
>>12684051
Chasm the Rift. Good: pretty cool designs here and there, weapons have a good feeling to them. Bad: The level design is just bad. Nothing but tight mazelike corridors with enemies spawning behind you as the games one and only trick.
>>
Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp on the PS2. Good: its fun and whimsical and stress free.l and you get to ride horses. The bad: its gay af.
>>
>>12684051
Gradius on MSX. Plays actually pretty good. Not arcade accurate or even close to the standards of the NES version but I feel like I am playing a legitimate version of Gradius. Scrolling sucks but you get used to it and it's actually fun. I could imagine people back then having a blast on this machine in general. I am legitimately having a good time here.

>The MSX is less than 1 month older than the NES
I don't give a fuck.
