gta3 was revolutionary at the time for the amount of freedom you had to do what the fuck ever in a 3D open world.
vice city was a refined version of the same so it was also loved.
San Andreas added a bunch of extra shit to make the whole thing seem more complete and full-featured.
they are objectively kind of mediocre but the innovations of gta3 gave the series enough cred to coast for a couple games and stay loved.

They were babby's first open world slop. GTA is objectively terrible but playing them as a child blew my fucking mind and melted my face off.

I couldn't believe the amount of freedom it gave you.

It's 100% the novelty of being able to go anywhere and kill anyone.
>>
These games are a litmus test for goyetic brain activity. If you like them then well... I have bad news.

you could steal any car at any time, drive like an idiot, run over pedestrians, get into chases and gunfights with the police, and generally rampage like a dickhead.

I have bought 3 og xboxs to fix and each of them had saves from the gta games. Everytime the save is after the first or second mission. Did normies really buy the game to just run over people on the sidewalk for 2 hours? It doesnt matter which GTA it is, even an xbox that had saves for all 3 they only finished the first mission of each.
>>
>>12685024
Every single second hand PS2 memory card has a GTA SA save at the very first mission as well. Empty open worlds are crack to normalfags.

This made me stop liking GTA.
>>
>>12684853
You are approaching the games with the wrong mindset. The games aren't supposed to be challenging or have a very satisfying gameplay or even just be for mindless fun. The main reason you play these is for the lore, the characters and the story in general. The immersion, the many npc's interactions and what have you. That's what makes it good. That's why GTA IV is the best one.
>>
>>12684853

>>
>>12684853
I'm glad someone is saying it. You guys are my kind of people.

the kind of people that played this shit do not play any other videogames. they were absolute wigger casuals. I remember the two IRL acquaintances I had that were obsessed the most with San Andreas became drug addict ruthless shitsacks who are probably now in prison.

That being said, openworld "reallife" sim is a super hook for pretty much everybody. People long for a game where you can crash cars and kill strangers with no consequence. Me and the boys had fun screwing around in SA. Each game was better than the last, I do not like GTA3 at all, Max Payne + any racing game shits on it in its time.
As cool as the crime film tryhard story, period piece settings, the period-accurate licensed radio songs, and all that are, I feel like it wasn't the mainstream appeal.

>>12685024
the story is fucking bonked. The objectives and difficulty spikes and tedium of driving to the mission start over and over absolutely filtered everybody.

try to finish VC or SA today, it is frustrating and always was. It was so bad that it soured my impression of the entire ps2 era of western game design. Inconsistent minigame bullshit TonyHawks Underground too and many others threw so many minigame mechanics at you for random missions instead of having a core satisfying "gameplay loop" as much as I hate the term
so people avoided missions and made their own loop of being reckless and avoiding cops which was fun. Honestly if the missions weren't so bad I would respect these games a lot more. >>12685132 IV is the only GTA that I respect. The story and characters and tone really worked, and the gameplay and missions didn't step on its own toes.

I guess for all the rambling, my point is that this style of game benefitted from better hardware. The /vr/ ones are overrated

Why is always self-dignified autistic faggots who hate on 3D-era GTA games? I even suspect it's the same retard who posts all these threads. The complaints about how they are so, SO unfair and hard, and the brand of spite towards the people who played and enjoyed them are so specific: like they're mad that their classmates who weren't absolute autistic dweeb nerds enjoyed these games. I knew quite a few seething retards like yourself when I was a teenager. I bet you also automatically hate sports games and think of yourself as having "high standards".

I've been playing games all my life. I was 12 when GTA III was released, and I'm willing to bet that by 16, I'd already played more games than you've played in your entire life. And I really, really enjoyed 3D-era GTA games. They were, and are, among my favorites. And so did many other people who meet and surpass your imaginary standards for being a Proper Videogame Enjoyer, loser. Deal with it.

each retro GTA got a little better in that regard. Still, It is a fact turned meme that the train mission with Big Smoke filtered a ton of normies. I think it would be completely fair to say half of the total players never made it past that point. A post earlier claimed in his experience many players never even got past the 2nd mission. Personally I dropped the story during some molotov shootout mission, I hated how the game would spawn the player at the hospital and I'd have to; steal a car, lose the wanted level, buy body armor, drive to the arbitrary point on the map that the mission started, drive halfway across town for step 1, then drive to the other side of town for the easily failable mission. That structure makes it easy to say "fuck it" and screw around with cheats and the open world instead of the timed janky missions.

>>12685483
sorry for being a self-dignified autistic faggot, I can't help it. A contrarian who typically dislikes sports games on top of that. But I did snag the GTAs, used, and played them for a while after the hype had died down. I saw some friends engage with them deeply and show me secrets. They're cool and were super culturally relevant. But the casual normies all left their PS2s behind. You're on a board for autistic retro gaming hobbyists. It really shouldn't be surprising that autists who look at things objectively instead of being caught up in the zeitgeist will be more critical of these games. Vice City had to compete with Sunshine's movement, Need For Speed's driving, Morrowind's Open World, and Ratchet and Clank's 3D shooting just to give some 2002 examples.
>those games are for gay autistic dweebs
yea, where do you think you are? All I'm saying is that the 3D GTAs had a jack of all trades master of none thing going on that i found personally frustrating to /play/. They were definitely cool and impressive, just a little overrated by normies.
>>12685487

>>
The idea of a free movement, open world, 3D action game, particularly one that allowed random violence, was exciting. The idea that if you saw a car you liked, you could steal it and make it yours, was mind blowing. Of course the novelty has long since worn off, but for a lot of people, the freedom allowed by the 3D GTAs was a huge selling point, to the extent that I bet there were many people (myself included) who cared more about just running around, exploring the city, finding cool cars to steal, trying to get away with killing random people, and just generally fucking around than they did about the plot or missions.

Yes of course, much in the same way that World of Warcraft had to compete with Shadow of the Colossus because they both had horse-riding and swords

Being self-aware of your own retardation does not make up for it. No, not even if you "accept it" and go "hehe that's just the way I am!". Sorry, but you should've learned this many years ago

Im playing through San Andreas for the first time now and idk man, it's pretty clearly a masterpiece.

The opening missions before you get ammunation is genuinely as dense on main missions as some GTA clones are over their entire runtime

>>
>>12684853
The gameplay is fun. The main aspect is driving and they just did that right in all 3 games. The combat is barebone but like not bad. SA had a lot of side activities that made the world more immersive and alive. VC was just our Scarface/Miami Vice the game....game...Also even Euros and Asians worship the 80s neon Miami with new wave and stuff. 3 is the one that aged kinda poorly.
>>12684886
Nearly every millenial played SA on PS2 or PC. The IMG Tool messing around and SAMP were huge. Also all those old tutorial videos with notepad and comfy music.

The US radio is uniquely bad because all the stations are owned by one company basically. But it's still not so bad. It's nice they have a lot of AM stuff
>>
>>12686561
I just listen to stuff I download, and I always block ads because they're mega annoying. I like the older ideas of radio and TV, but advertisers have just fucking ruined that shit for me now, I actually watch TV now and it's unbearable.
>>
>>12684853
But enough about Metal Gear Solid.

anyone who uses terms like 'gameplay loop', 'handcrafted', or 'openworld' (treated as a genre of game rather than a type of map) I know to immediately disregard as a pseud. without fail they're a zoomer who grew up watching shitty YT video essays on how "this random PS2 scrimblo is a work of high art" and have made this weird form of manchild superiority complex their entire personality.
>>
>>12687225
cut em some slack man, atleast they ain't got fully shitty taste by playing and idolizing modern slop
>>
>>12686564
having actually travelled I can definitively say no, this is bullshit. the US consistently has the best radio in the world; nowhere else do you get the level of variety the US has. you go just about anywhere else and it's the same handful of stations across the entire country and they all play the same generic local-language pop music and some shitty small town stations attempting to do a "local comedy" thing where they interview the town drunk and act like it's the pinnacle of human existence.
In the US every state has a dozen different stations, and you can find at least one station for every conceivable genre of music. American radio is like the golden age of pirate radio, except it's all legal and legit.
>>
>>12687232
Maybe AM radio but definitely not FM radio due to the amount of ads per airtime
>>
>>12687234
There are still good independent FM stations around. The one in my area only plays maybe 10 minutes of ads every hour.

I liked 3 at the time, but VC surpasses it in every way. I'll agree that the gameplay is clunky outside of the cars, but the driving gameplay is good. >>
>>12684853
None of the GTA clones or GTA-likes had the scale or the fun of the GTA games. Maybe with the exception of RPGs, which were the series’ only real competition. Take *Yakuza*, for example—it had a static world despite its fun brawler mechanics. Rockstar even tried to copy that with *Bully* and other smaller games, but they never managed to go that far. Others just didn’t have the investment. *Mafia* was great but had poor pacing; *Postal 2* was also very niche and survived on controversy. I say this as someone who hates how “normies” play *GTA* by default and don’t want to play anything else.
>>
>>12684893
I had the same experience with a pirated copy of GTA 1. It was just amazing. Later I tried GTA III and lost interest pretty quickly, because I had already had that cherry thoroughly popped, and the extra immersion provided by the fully 3D world was balanced out by the extra clumsiness provided by same.
