>The first Jak and Daxter was heavily influenced by games like Mario 64, and was quite twee and colourful in relation to Jak II. Mario Sunshine, a game in the traditional twee style, performed below expectations - did that have any impact on the direction you were taking Jak II in?

>Rubin: It definitely redoubled my belief that you have to push the genre forward, because when I put that game in and expected Miyamoto greatness, and the characters came out saying: "Bloop! Bloop! Bloop!" I was like, that is 1997. I don't need that in 2003.
>Give me a character with a voice and a personality, and more of a cinematic experience. Don't give me Mario from 15 years ago. They just haven't moved on; that's not their focus. I think its very hard for Miyamoto to both run Nintendo - which he does to a certain extent - and get into the game design.

Jak II was the first game by Naughty Dog to suck massive ass.

Thanks

God what a fucking insufferable faggot that ruined the industry

But enough about Kojima
>>
Ironically Jak 2 flopped and Sunshine sold several times more copies
>>
meanwhile sunshine is still one of the best 3d platformers ever made, incredibly distinct and remembered fondly by countless people, and jak 2 is a forgotten pile of shit.

Agreed

awesome

Wow, so brave and visionary
>>
It's too bad how the rest of the franchise went cause Jak 1 was kino. Every fucking studio felt a need to overcomplicate 3d platformers with guns and vehicles because they wanted GTA money and it just waters down the experience completely.

Yes he is. One of the problems with Sunshine is that it goes TOO FAR in the direction this dork is advocating for. The cinematic voice-acted bits of that game are awful, while the parts in which you run and jump and hop and bop are often very good. Yes, a game with voices and a biting dramatic epic story shot through with harrowing darkness COULD be excellent, but... the kind of person who thinks Jak and Daxter are appealing characters is absolutely never going to write the excellent story that that game would need to support the rest of its excellence.
>>
Jak II is better than literally 'any' GTA game. If I had this game growing up I would have never touched a GTA game ever again. Tendies convinced me the first one is the best one and while it does play really well and has an amazing setting, I didn't mind the change in tone or direction. Made the setting all the more interesting imho. The game gets WAY too much hate.
>>
>>12687027
I hate Jak II because aesthetically it's cartoony but in the most edgehegg depressing way possible, which were all the worst parts of Jak and Daxter. I want what was on the box, colourful cel-shaded early 00's tropical tribal vibes. Not "My name is Jak and I moved to the big city to kick ass and kill Praxis, and I'm all outta ass!".
>>
>>12687052
"muh early 00s tropical beach cel zoomer stolen-nostalgia vibes" take a fucking nuke to the face

Jak? More like soijak lmao

Sunshine did a terrible job of just about everything it attempted. It's literally one of the weakest platform games of the generation. I get that there's slim pickings on the gamecube but we really gotta work past brand = quality and accept sometimes brand can be shit. Sunshine is objectively shit and just because it also does cinematics like shit, doesn't mean it's suddenly bad to do cinematics. Just the previous generation Miyamoto was saying this while implying fucking Hideo Kojima was doing it wrong.

Cinematic ideas in games are great, and the marriage of them to gameplay can elevate the work significantly if done well. At no point is Jak 1 or 2 (haven't played 3) hurt by its cinematic elements. The ideas it borrows and implements are by and large refreshing for gameplay and improve the experience.
>>
>>12685997
Jak II is such a fucking bad GTA clone.
>>
Jak 2 is just so miserable to play. A bunch of shitty, aimless little level segments connected around a god awful to traverse hub zone.
>>
>>12687052
nta but eh, I think the aesthetics of grimdark and platforming offset the bleakness of the setting. Characters are really lively, its got some good puzzles and its pretty challenging while offering a really interesting cast of enemies. Racing segments are also way better than Jak1 and the atmosphere is some of the best you get from a PlayStation game. I think the HD version is the best version to play imo. PS2 version is pretty washed out but there's more life in the later releases since they had more time to polish it up.
>>
desu Jak 2 is more memorable a game than Mario Sunshine. It stands as a great example of the shifting trends in 6th gen. Mario Sunshine is just bad Mario 64
>>
>>12687375
yeah same. if i wanted to play Sunshine I'd play M64. There are not that many GTA clones that outshine GTA while being whimsical at the same time. Jak II really goes out of its way challenging the grimdark trends and manages to be really unique imo. jak1 is just another platformer imo.

>>12686697
I have no idea how they even fucked it up that badly. Like, even GTA has packages to find, but this didn't even have Precursor eggs.
>>
>>12685997
well i can certainly say jak 2 did nothing to push the genre forward. it was just a fantasy GTA but your character didn't control like ass. i do like it very much though regardless.
>>
>>12685997
If this wasn't coming from a Sony dev it would sound like some insane tendie cope
>No dude Sunshine wasn't a shit game, gamers are just tired of the Mario formula!

I wonder what he thought of NSMB's success.
>>
>>12686317
Sunshine is about 20% of a good game, and 80% steaming garbage.
>>
>>12687024
He's complaining that every non-cutscene the voices were just making stock babbling sounds

Even with all its problems Sunshine is a million times better than anything Neutered Dog could ever put out. Not even in their dreams any of their characters controlled as good as Mario in SMS.
>>
>>12685997
Jak is legitimately terrible, all of them
Bland ass gameplay, pointless differentiation between spinning and punching (do not even begin to come at me with “muh use cases” when they don’t fucking matter and I beat the first one without even vaguely punching), AWFUL character design
Fuck that entire series
>>
>>12688485
>AWFUL character design
That's really the biggest problem for me. How did they go from the perfection of Crash Bandicoot's Looney Tunes-esque design to these abominations?
>>
>>12688514
Crash was Universal's baby, Naughty Dog was the godmother.

>all the seeting hatred itt over what is an okay edgy platformer
i dont think ive ever seen a thread take its dislike over a video game to such an extreme. the series (including the sequels) aren't even that bad. chill.

it's because he insulted my marios and my miyamotos

Jak was cursed by being a weird ugly elf creature. he's no Mario, Crash, or Spyro

>remembered fondly by countless people
It's remembered by people unfortunate enough to grow up with the Gamecube, a system where everyone had the same handful of first party games and nothing else because there was nothing else.
