They should've just updated the graphics but leave the gameplay as it was, it was already near perfect, just release a new one every 5 years with just graphics update and that's it, people would still be playing it in 2026 like they did in the 00s
>>12686472>They should've just updated the graphicskys
>>12686472 This isn't true at all. Skill based multiplayer gameplay disappeared after the 90's outside of fighters and strategy games.
>>12686482I mean to attract new players, I don't care about graphics but young generations do
>>12686472>They should've just updated the graphics but leave the gameplay as it was, it was already near perfectThe problem with Quake (and arena shooters in general) is its complexity. The current standard is Call of Duty or Overwatch: brainless team deathmatch or hero shooters where everything runs on character abilities and cooldowns.Quake's economy is all about weapon spawns and megas (health/shield). Those cooldowns aren't on the HUD: you gotta keep track in your head. On top of that, you need good positioning and map control to keep the other guy from even getting near those items.Epic tried the arena formula with Gears of War, but they knew most players are dumb. They kept weapon economy and map control but simplified movement and positioning with the cover system.Arena shooters are to FPS what RTS is to strategy games: too hardcore for normies and too complex for the "le hardcore gamer" crowd. Nowadays, saying you like Quake is just a silly way to brag that you're better than other gamers. Truth is that nobody actually plays them.
>>12686472Nobody wants to play Quake, least of all Quake fans.
>>12686472>updated the graphics but leave the gameplay as it waseveryone thinks is is possible/easy but it isn't in many cases
>>12686472There's a reason why arena based shooters never got mainstream acceptance when the normalfags invaded.
>>12686573whats the difference between halo and quake?
>>12686472>This game could've been milked for eternityIt hasn't? It is still being milked as I type this reply to this gay ass thread

>>12686668Lol bodied that freak
>>12686472More like "aged like milk" lmao
>>12686663Pace. Believe it or not, Halo is an arena shooter.
>>12686527>Skill based multiplayer gameplay disappeared>>12686529>I don't care about graphics but young generations doDumb millennials
>>12686663>>12686728Just for the record, we still have arena shooters (Halo, Gears, Titanfall), but they're not the same formula as Quake. It's diluted: they add stuff on top to offset those changes. In Halo it's the pace and movement, in Gears it's the cover system, in Titanfall it's the economy (not weapon spawns but bot spawns to farm for the Titan fall). What I meant by "arena shooters in general," is the Quake/Unreal formula. Games like Toxikk tried it and failed, because a fast-paced arena shooter whose economy relies on tracking item spawns while map-controlling is too complex for most players.Halo, Gears, and Titanfall succeeded by swapping one complex element for a simpler one. That said, I need to correct myself: the multiplayer /vr/ arena shooters or "boomer shooters" are the ones nobody plays and nobody cares about. Doom 2016 had multiplayer, but like Quake Champions, both flopped by copying Overwatch’s hero-shooter ideas instead of innovating like Halo, Gears, and Titanfall did.
>>12686472This is what happened with Counterstrike. It doesn't matter how fun the game was originally it will still get ruined in the modern age with competitive matchmaking and knife skin gambling.
>>12686728I grew up on Halo and thought it was way easier than something like cod search & destroyisnt the most competitive game just the game with the most competition? dont see how arena shooters are anything special. coming up with loadouts is harder than knowing weapon spawns imo
>>12686472Many, many games should gotten this treatment.
>>12686472Quake live is literally perfect, if you don't play it go away.
>>12686787>most competitive gameis the game which requires most skill. In fps that has always been Quake. The slower a game becomes, the more aim reliant it gets. And now you have all these aimtrainer noobs with sub 50g 8k mice all they do is going for teh headshot! while their egos are safely embedded into a team, in case of failure. (also a reason for arena shooters dying, Timmies afraid of losing)
>>12686787>t. did not play sweaty lobbies of halo nor codthe competitive endgame of both of these is locking down the map and it is much harder to do in Halo because you do not fly 500mph, you don't have low TTK unless you have power weapons which run out of ammo quickly, and the maps were generally designed with intelligence and awareness of sweaty gameplay.
>>12686472>This game could've been milked for eternityIt wasn't, because it wasn't anywhere close to perfect.Doom is being milked for eternity.
>>12687014I was rank 44 in lone wolves and in the 40s in doubles. me and my friend knew all the hiding spots. so we would get a kill and then hide and then they would spend the whole game looking for us while we send them ragebait messages
>>12686673The guy is simply using 8 bit gif which look really bad, there is a hires textyre pack but the problem comes with online in quake case since is modular you can play with whatever custom skin but that gives you a dusadvantage since server just use fat guy skin in those cases so you are a big target for all the other players, add more stuff to servers and sone whinney faggs will complain for posters of sexy girls and so on.Just checked servers and most are dead with bots playing in all of them so is a sad situation no matter if is ioquake, spearmint, open arena or whatever new stuff released.
So, what's the difference between Quake 3 and Quake Live on Steam? I assume the latter has central servers, is this correct?
>this thread againThey did update the graphics but the retards at id decided to not use their own engine, instead favoring some Russian garbage that still to this day has terrible performance and net code.
>>12686573What you said about item timings is very true. And in these threads I always mention how movement was a huge hurdle too because not only was it an austic thing in quake to get good at, there was no clear way to simplify it for console players to pull off on controller without pissing off all the older fans. But then you had people up in arms when fortnite added turbo building then fast editing, and they got over it, so cares.
>>12687384Quake Live player count peak today was 427, Quake III Arena was 43
>>12687441I thought Q3A didn't have central servers.
>>12686472Ah yes, Quake "get used to multiplayer only" III Arena, and Quake "subscriptions and rented servers" Live, saviors of the PC gaming industryAt least Counter-Strike Condition Zero and UT2K put some work into singleplayer in their multiplayer focused products
>>12686472Quake 3 is all about community content. VQ3 fucking sucks in every way from the movement to the maps to the gamemodes. That's why there can never be another Quake game that captures what Q3A offered. Nobody is willing to give players and server admins that level of creative freedom anymore.Just look at the difference between Radiant and SnapMap from Doom (2016)
>>12686573>The problem with Quake (and arena shooters in general) is its complexity. So what do they put into the water? I'd think the hardcore would prefer complexity. Everything is so much easier now, good hardware, low pings and so on.
>>12687384Some weapon changes, machine gun does less damage than in Q3A etc, these were done at the request of quake pros to make it better competitive. Bunnyhopping is automatic now works like it does in Painkiller were you dont need to jump sideways and move the mouse.
>>12686472No it couldn't.Every entry into the genre after UT 2004 has fallen flat on its face, appealing to pretty much nobody outside the same shrinking crowd of twitch-shooter autists. The hard truth is that any game that doesn't massively compress floor-ceiling skill gap very quickly ends up only being played a tiny handful of top talent.Server browsers don't fix it, matchmaking doesn't fix it.Many have tried, all have failed. It's time to face the music and accept the genre is never coming back. Counterstrike killed it.
>>12686472>it was already near perfectQuake Live was basically Q3 but freemium. its still aLive IIRC.
This thread, but about Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix multiplayer.
quakeworld rocket arena > q3
As a true og fan (qtest was uploaded to my dialup BBS), Q3A being deathmatch only was received with deep disappointment by my crew (and we were prominent in the efnet scene). It's not even that we really wanted a deep single player campaign or anything, but having that as a sidecar to great DM was what made Quake 1 feel really rich. What's more so many of those single-player maps (particularly the Willits ones, fuck you Sandy) made FANTASTIC deathmatch maps. E1 is a dream to play in multi, it's so rich and distinct. HUT, HUT, HUT, CHINGCHINGCHING. Where am I? You know.Q2 had some lackluster aspects that didn't quite live up to the original but sadly they went in an even more wrong direction for 3.
>>12686472>just release a new one every 5 years with just graphics update and that's itIf you could play with everyone with any other version, sure. Otherwise that would just be splitting what audience is there up every 5 years.Quake Live was a really good idea, but then they for some reason made that one paid, and Champions free. Wierd choice.
>>12687771There’s no hardcore crowd; it’s so tiny that it’s practically nonexistent.
