How was this even possible in 2004?!
>>12687283Autist-supreme genius John Carmack, obviously.
>>12687283texture portal mirror effect but with a new level.
>>12687283No Indians
Not only do I not know, I also do not care.
chadTech mogs valveslop so hard
Baywatch was still on TVThose bouncers motivated the developer to reach his full potential
>>12687283Sorry Id, Duke did it first.
>>12687283Computers, I think they used computers to make it.
>>12687283Nice tech demo, shit game, like all id garbage.
>>12687537Quake 4 is tho
>>12687545>isfun
>>12687285>>12687283i thought he didn't do DOOM3?
>>12687545>>12687546I still prefer D3. Q4 has a lot of faffing about for its main campaign. Might have some decent custom levels though.
>>12687283The power of 100% white male developer teams
>>12687713Come on I'm sure they had a second generation asian american on there.
>>12687693He presented Doom 3 at an Apple conference, showing off Geforce 3 capability. It was a breakthrough. Stop smoking crack.
>>12687693He was working on the idtech engines all the way up to the early stages of the doom 2016 engine
>>12687713x10
>>12687693You're thinking of Romero
>>12687713who do you think does the engine programming for modern games?
>>12687703kekypow at dead cacodemons.
>>12687283for most people, the frame rate was more choppy than that, thoughstever

>>12688940You can invent a hammer but subcontinentals are going to use it wrong regardless
>>12687283that looks like absolute dogshit anon, what do you mean >possible in 2004I've seen better looking gamecube games than that ugly blurry mess of gray and black low poly vomit
>>12687703Why is this so funny lmao
>>12687713TRVKE
>>12689161Doom 3's graphics aged better than any game in history.>muh low poly :(((I guarantee you're a fan of modern Unreal Engine 5 slop.
>>12689617/v/ tourists man...even posted the lame molyneux>>12687767We all laugh now that D3 textures look like they're made from vulcanized rubber, but this was a time where you could see triangles everywhere and the best looking game at the time was DX:Invisible War....And GPUs mostly had 66 or 131mb of VRAM, often using AGP or PCI (Not even PCI-E)
>>12689409>those baked shadows>The shadows are cast by another light source, ignoring the flashlightidtech bros... our response?
>>12687283Any reason why no one other than themselves, besides modders, has ever made a game using id Tech 4? Imagine this look but with more modern models and artistry, and maybe further engine refinements
>>12689756Other dev teams have used id Tech 4. The stencil shadows technique wasn't patented by id Software: it was Creative's. id got a license for Doom 3 in exchange for EAX audio support. You're free to use the open-sourced id Tech 4 (GPLv3), but you must implement your own shadow solution to avoid any lingering issues, and anything you add on top has to be open-sourced too.The real move is getting a proper commercial license like Infinity Ward or Valve did back in the day, so you can keep your upgrades proprietary. These days id won't license the newer engines to outsiders unless Zenimax pushes it; like how Arkane did Void Engine or MachineGames built Motor. As of today, the latest notable id Tech 4-based release is a 2025 indie game by Blendo games.>>12689409Heh, you assumed /vr/ would have something to say, but they’re completely clueless.
>>12689791>You're free to use the open-sourced id Tech 4 (GPLv3), but you must implement your own shadow solution to avoid any lingering issuesSo these indie mods doesn't use the original stencil shadows but made their own?
>>12689830Most likely yes.
>>12687283the power of autism and C++
>>12689791Carmack found the method for shadowing but then found creative already held a patent. Doom 3's EAX support is probably worth it imo, I remember kids in my highschool of the day gushing about the sounds. The source code released later just uses a different method avoiding the patent for shadows. It was released with GPL compliant shadows.Patent is expired now either way.
>>12689409I don't know what the fuck this is trying to show.
>>12687545Quake 4 was by Raven.
>>12687283Heavily hand placed light and shadow casting. Takes a ton of work to get right. That's why Doom 3 is a tiny and boring corridor shooter, unlike the older Doom games.>>12690010The flashlight doesn't cast shadows.
>>12687472Always bet on Duke
>>12687703>>12688956>>12689287https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14WcHFPaJio
>>12690010A shadow should disappear when light shines on it, but the flashlight has no effect.
>>12690179No, it should only get lighter, which it does.>>12690171>The flashlight doesn't cast shadows.Yes it does, the shadow to the left of the little pole there is caused by the flashlight.
