I've never played this mod, but a mod of Zero Hour is out and you can play it as an FPS game, on a keyboard and mouse. It's a somewhat new project but I think it still fits the /vr/ theme since it's based on Zero Hour. I would like to try this myself.

The game has an FPS mode included by default, the 'only' thing this mod does is add the weapons on the HUD. Still cool though

What? I have never seen such a thing.

iirc it's a cheat code that unlocks after you beat the game once

This game should’ve just been an fps. No idea why they decided to take Duke into 3rd person.

This is such a great game. I miss playing multiplayer on 64.

If it was an FPS, it would have been too obvious that it runs on Build Engine. They had to hid it a little to avoid paying royalties to the rights holder.

/conspiracy theory

Kinda odd to have the rights to Duke Nukem but not have the rights to use the build engine. Idk that just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me but could explain it.

3D Realms notoriously acted like they owned the engine (they didn't).
>>
I would've been electrostatic about a Duke Nukem 4 on the build engine back in the day

I still remember all the old Duke Nukem forever trailers…. That could’ve been a great game. When it did finally release it was mediocre as shit. All the trailers from back when it was supposed to release looked far more fun. https://youtu.be/TDlB2P1leRM?is=oNtFKp4AAWNKJUkw
What an iconic theme song.

I just discovered now that Vegas is the least interesting place to place a computer game imo. I would've preferred an expanded duke 3d style game but with a real 3d engine.

Probably because it was a platformer originally? Third person works great for this game.

It was built for 3D Realms by Ken Silverman, who then started working for them full time and continued to work on it. How would they not own it?

The devs were specifically asked by 3D Realms to make a third person Duke for two main reasons:
1. Third person games were becoming more popular at the time thanks to IPs like Tomb Raider. 3D Realms wanted "side" Duke games to try and cash in on this trend while Forever was still in development.
2. 3D Realms wanted to hide the fact that Zero Hour was still being made on the same engine as Duke 3D. Going third person would help give the impression that the game's tech was all new.

The guy behind Zero Hour Overclocked held a two hour long interview with a couple of the original devs where they talked about this, along with a bunch of other stuff. It's on the mod dev's youtube channel.

I wish there was a way to get Duke Nukem: Time To kill in first person mode. I love that game and I always wanted to play it as first person shooter. It's great that we live in a time where those 90s fantasies of 'I wish this was a first person shooter' are actually possible now.

They could have said "we made a new graphics engine for Build" or simply "we improved the engine"; but instead they did this. This is why I beleive they hid it to avoid paying royalties to Ken Silverman. It worked too, nobody found out until 15 years or so ago; despite the fact that once you know, it's very obvious (they even used Duke3D's sector effectors, in fact I wonder Duke3D programmers should have gotten royalties too).

Bumping this thread, just reached Victorian London. I've never played the original game but I'm really enjoying myself. I've only missed one time machine part so far. I'm playing with a controller though and I wish I could enable rumble. Some sensitivity settings would be nice too.

That's great. I'm going to play it soon too. If you miss a time machine part you can always level select and get it back.
