Is the steam release the way to go in terms of a first time playthrough for Quake I & II?
>>12691343all the sourceports have annoying convoluted drawbacks for some reason.
>>12691348Ah, noted.
>>12691348what's the drawback of ironwail?
>>12691343Buy it on GOG and own it instead of renting
>>12691348That's not the case. Quakespasm is fine.Stop being so nitpicky. If you really are so hardcore as you are claiming why aren't you still playing dos quake then?
>>12691343>Is the steam release the way to go in terms of a first time playthrough for Quake I & II?There’s minor gameplay changes for Quake 1, tremendous gameplay changes for Quake 2. Source ports are better if you want something close to how they used to play.
I played quake that way and I thought it was great. Quake 2 has a built in retard arrow but IIRC it's optional to use it.
>>12691535wanting music to ply isn't a nitpick
>>12691348Quakespasm, Ironwail, and vkQuake have no drawbacks. In fact, Ironwail and vkQuake are the best ways to experience Quake.
>>12691343They're alright, though make sure the music works.>>12691348Quakespasm was already buttery smooth for me when I picked up around Quake's 20th anniversary, what the hell are you on about? Man, I should actually play some Quake again, since it's 30 now.
>>12691343Quake 1 is pretty much the same, they just changed nightmare mode by basically pre-installing an older Copper version and added an expansion. The expansion is good but if you just want to play the main campaign there's no need to play the steam release. There's a boring horde mode in the steam release too, I guess. Quake 2 they also added an expansion but they changed a lot of things, and I prefer the changes, but if you want to experience the original it's not a good representation. It's more like an official mod.
>>12691343it's trash and too bright so it reveals hidden monsters and ruins surprises. play ironwail instead
>>12691363buy an ad
>>12691343It's like $10, buy the fucking thing. I bought it just so I could have the full game on 3DS and also the AMAZING SOUNDTRACK werks right out of the box.
>>12691343I went with Ironwail for Q1 and Yamagi for Q2 and was happy.
>>12691824Being too dumb to just copy a music folder is a you problemMusic plays perfectly on Ironwail
>>12691936And having to mount it as a virtual disc everytime is annoying and gay. I got better shit to do
>>12691960>having to mount it as a virtual disc everytime is annoying and gay.Agreed, good thing you can avoid that and still get music via sourceports
>>12691343The Steam releases are unironically good examples of remasters and the bonus content is a nice touch
>>12691969>pay steam $10 >download and install >click play>play game(on loonix btw no problems)Now go ahead and write me a guide on how to do it your way so I can laugh.
Where can I find the remastered release without having to install it from steam or gog? I found the files for the original, but I want to play the Q64 port.
>>12691992Quake 2 that is, forgot to say that.
>>12691969>>Agreed, good thing you can avoid that and still get music via sourceportsAnd everything you need is in the FPS general, ND ports are mostly for console Shubniggers
>>12691960>having to mount it as a virtual disc everytime is annoying and gayGood thing you don't have to do this, retardAll you need is to have the tracks in your \id1\music folder
>>12691960>>12691824I hope you bust your face on a walk soon.>Wow Quakefags sure are hostileGot nothing to do with Quake. You're just a moron.
>>12691348what's wrong with markv?
>>12691960>And having to mount it as a virtual disc everytime Literally never had to do this, I just put the music files in the port's music folder.
Is there a source port that can play the remastered maps?
>>12691975>download and run dosbox>download quake image>click playWtf is a 'loonix', btw?
>>12692347I don't know about the maps, but Ironwail lets you use the remastered models
Ironwail if you're autistic and value the ability to fiddle with every aspect of the game, the Steam port if you just wanna play Quake. You can't go wrong with either but Nightdive did a great job on the Quake port.
>>12692381>>12692383Sorry, I was talking about Quake 2. I should have said that.
>>12692359This is must be missing steps, I cannot play the game. Good thing it's only $10 on steam, poorboy.
Quake > DOTM > COTM > SOA > Quake II > DOE >> Quake II 64 > The Reckoning >>> Ground Zero > DOTP
>>12691363true. but you can also rent it in a convenient platform and pirate it to keep it just in case. And I'm pretty sure one of you fine folks will let me grab your gog copy when steam dies :)
>>12692093>bust your face on a walkThis is one of the weirdest things I've ever read on 4chan.
>>12692513Where do NORH and BOSM fit into this ranking, in your opinion? And what of POJ?
>>12692665I have no idea what these are, I only played the official expansions
>>12691975>It's easier to play it on Steam/GOGNot relevant, it's funny thinking you have to download an ISO to mount it on a virtual drive instead of downloading the .oggs to play in the music folder >>12692053 for the music. Otherwise:>download port>extract to base Quake directory>launch exeHumoring the pivot, the Steam/GOG release is worth it just to play the new episodes (and if you're not a newfag, they were a free upgrade for original owners,) but many invest into a sourceport installation as well to play the mods that KexQuake doesn't support. You don't have to use only one port.
>>12691343Sure. Worst case both comes with the originals and GLQuake works pretty well. It has even mousewheel support. But I prefer the modern ports.>>12691975Nearly everything is plug n play with Heroic and ProtonGE on Linux. Worst case you need a wrapper for old direct3d.
>>12691343It's better than nothing. It's mostly the original games with some bug fixes, a few new features and improved visuals slapped on. You also get achievements and horde mode. Perfect for a modern gamer and cheap when it's on sale.
>>12691827Why do two different options exist?
>>12694604Short answer: Autism. Long answer: People with autism.
>>12694604Both are based on Quakespasm. Quakespasm was the premiere Quake sourceport in the 2010s, competing with the likes of Requiem, DirectQ, MarkV, FitzQuake, etc. Quakespasm won for reasons I'm not actually sure, though some people still use MarkV. Quakespasm-Spiked was also released in the 2010s as a Quakespasm fork heavily focused on multiplayer. vkQuake came about as a way to introduce Vulkan API to Quakespasm, and it was doing very well for a while. An individual who aided in maintaining vkQuake decided to do his own Quakespasm fork, Ironwail. Why? Same reason someome might look at a chair and decide to make one themselves. Both Ironwail and vkQuake will have you for all your Quake needs, BUT Ironwail has an in-game mods and levels browser, which edges out vkQuake for me personally.
Still using Fitzquake. Quakespasm is nice too.
>>12694613>Both Ironwail and vkQuake will have you for all your Quake needs, BUT Ironwail has an in-game mods and levels browser, which edges out vkQuake for me personally.Ironwail doesn’t support the particle effects that mods like Arcane Dimensions makes use of so I go back between it and VkQuake frequently.
I just bought the remastered Quake 2 on gog because it's on sale, and I wanted to play the port of quake 2 64. I notice that the mouselook feels really awkward to me compared to Yamagi. It seems like it's too sluggish at some times and too fast at others. It's a bit hard to describe in words. Does anyone know what is going on with this? I tried playing with the mouse settings a lot and nothing really fixed this.
>>12695782There are already plenty of reasons to decline to use kexquake, you don't have to make shit up too.
>>12691362The creator is a known leftist and worshipper of Zog.
>>12695782Weirdly I get this on Kex Q1 not 2, but turning off Vsync or trying a different window mode can help. The Kex rendering layer is quite prone to adding latency it seems. I really don't see why it was necessary for games that were already open source with plenty of precedence for engine upgrades.
>>12694604pic related>>12694613To me Ironwail wins due to rumble support for gamepads. It's fun.
