>>12691389Give it a try and tell us what you think
Uh oh I did not meant to make this into a thread.
>>12691393Is it like the fantasy viii?
Is it any good?
>>12691389I'm replaying it right now for the first time in at least 15 years. Having a blast. I just love the atmosphere. I'm surprised at how little time you have some party members during the first two discs, but they're all still fun. I didn't like Quina that much as a kid, but now that I'm learning all the blue magic as early as possible, they're a lot of fun. I didn't remember Kuja being very interesting when I played the English version back at release, but in the Japanese version I'm playing now, he's almost more interesting as a villain or something. I can't figure out why, but I feel like he gives more hints to what he's doing as the story goes along. Maybe I just didn't pay attention as a kid.
It's definitely the most generic, and storywise the weakest and clumsiest of the 5th gen Final Fantasy games, but the production values and general comfy vibe make it worth playing.
>>12692787Generic is good. 8 and 7 have terrible settings
>>12692797lol
>>12692482no its gay chibi shit for redditrannies
>>12692787Is that a butt? Nice.
>>12692797>Generic is good.It can be, but your post is shit. 7 has a good setting.
>>12692841But what sets it apart from the other Final Fantasy games, then?
>>12693356Depending on how you're looking at it, not much. That's not a bad thing. The tone is more relaxed and there's a focus on treasure hunting and mild exploration. The upgrade systems are much simpler than the previous 4 FFs (not a good thing IMO). The story isn't that great, it's more of a relax with a few beers kinda game. It's very slow so I recommend getting a version with speed-up if you play it. I have my original discs, I play on PC, the speed makes a big difference in my enjoyment of it.Many don't like that it wasn't ultra-serious like 6-8, not everyone has to like everything.
>>12693356Youngest average effective age (in human-equivalent years) for the main cast since FF3 where all 4 characters were kids. And that's not even counting Quina since I couldn't find a human-equivalent age for (he's technically 89 but his arc is a coming of age story).IV: 25V: 27VI: 27VII: 25VIII: 20 (counting flashback characters)IX: 18Technically, VIII would be the youngest if not counting flashback characters, but that's because ALL the characters are the same age (17) in the same class. VIII has ZERO underage preteen characters
>>12693356>>12693454To put it another way, consider these characters: Kain, Edge, Cid (FF4), Yang, Galuf, Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Cyan, Setzer, Barret, and Cid (FF7).Those games all have a variety of serious adult male characters fleshing out the primary cast. Even though FF5 gives way to a harem party, it's not like FF9 where the only adult males are Steiner the butt of all jokes and (eventually) Amarant the flaming dipshit. The only serious character is the ugly ratwoman.
I hate people who hate FFIX.It's the best final fantasy if you aren't an edgy tryhard.Simple as.Nuff said.Case closed.Period.
>>12693527I don't hate FFIX but that webm is a questionable shitpost given that an ugly, obnoxious, blue-haired, non-binary freakazoid would be right at home in the main cast of FF9.
>>12693553I like to post it randomly because it makes me laugh. The only trans comedy to ever succeed
>>12691389just play the first 10 hours, after that it is really bad
>>12692482Depends on why you like a jrpg. Story is alright but starts to drag on badly and then does a bit of bait and switch but not in the clever way FF7 did, more in an ass pull way if you can make it to that last disc because damn by disc 3 it needed to wrap it the fuck up. Some characters are rather endearing, most are there to fill a type slot and could be written out of the story easily (including my favorite but yea if its not Zidane, Vivi, or Garnet they have nearly no importance, seriously one exists for about 2 lines of dialogue to tell Garnet something and that is still more than a few of them). Combat is generic but in a fun way honestly, less fun than Materia but fuck loads better than Junctioning (kinda has the good part of that one without the shittier parts), though like many FF games you can bust that shit early to win easily. Card game wasn't as memorable as FF8s.>>12693356A cute tragic rat girl and fuck all. Its not bad but its not great either. It was a return to form in era that was experimenting and moving on that gets over hyped by people wanting to feel niche for playing it or pretending to play it when it got skipped by many due to the close launch of the PS2. If you really like Final Fantasy games its worth a shot to see if you like it, but if you only like a few of them then its not likely to turn you into a turbo fan that has to play them all.PS1 emulates well so if you have an afternoon free its not like there is much to lose trying it, but if you've never played a FF game and want to jump into them it wouldn't crack my top 5 for games to start with or even top 20 for Square games to try.
>>12693454 >>12693575Do you guys just care about the story and characters in these games?IX gets better as it goes, just not the story part of it. There's so much to do and see in disc 3 outside of the main quest. It's very relaxing.
>>12693615>Do you guys just care about the story and characters in these games?I was just responding toposts. I have different critiques of the gameplay. In fact I'd classify my commentary on the characters and story mostly preference (I don't like Quina, Freya, Steiner, Eiko or Amarant. I don't like Kuja, Brahne or the clown villains). I think Brahne and the clowns are objectively pretty shallow, and the main cast is inconistent but overall they aren't objectively bad. Though story/gameplay can't be entirely separated, one of my bigger critiques of FF9 is the cutscene-heavy presentation interferes with gameplay pacing, especially early-game.>>12693606I mostly agree with this post except that I'm not sure I'd call it a "bait and switch" because I never felt particularly baited by the starting plotline. It always felt like something was missing because Kuja's villainy seemed very forced and arbitrary along with the obvious mystery of the mist. It wasn't until Garland showed up that anything started making sense.
>>12693615I mean I played 9 a few times and I barely remember what the fuck even happens,I do remember the beginning, and then splitting up and the black mages, but then I swear it gets so boring and uninteresting that I zone out every time.I played 8 and 10 once and I still remember all the plot points, yeah the music is good, and the battle system is ok, but it is just so.... ugh....
