Why has it been memoryholed so hard?
What do you mean?I remember playing it on Animal Crossing.
I played on my mighty powerstation
Because you're not having any fun
>>12691597It's a post-black box coded black box game. As in, it's a very early release, but elements of it have hints of what games on the system would become in terms of originality (as in, it's not "just" an arcade port or something generic like Golf or Tennis) and style (cutesy graphics, abstract presentation and gameplay, again compared to the more straightforward early Nintendo titles). As a result, it doesn't have that "good Atari game on steroids" feeling that some of the other original black box titles had, doesn't have the appeal of being a port of a beloved arcade game, and doesn't have the pizzazz and gameplay complexity of Super Mario Brothers, another high concept black box game that bridged the gap between the early days of the system and what it would become.
>>12691597It's such a simple game it's hard for it to have any lasting legacy. It's a single screen game but not as mechanically interesting and brilliant in its simplicity as Mr. Do.
>>12691597Klu Klu Klan ruined its reputation
>>12691597Because nobody played it. I love Clu Clu Land. It's easily the most underrated of the black box games, and maybe the most underrated Nintendo 1st party. The thing most holding it back in the modern era (besides accessibility) is the fact that it's a one-screen arcade style game, combined with a pretty steep difficulty curve when you're first learning the game. I'm grateful that the game ramps up so quickly now that I'm a little more familiar with it though. The Disk System version of the game is a must-play if you like the original (the disk system version was the one in Animal Crossing if memory serves).
>>12691891It's not underrated, it's rated exactly correctly. It's not that fun. There's a reason it's mostly forgotten to time, and only remembered because of Animal Crossing.
>>12692041Clu Clu Land is quite enjoyable, even if I can't quite manage the highest speeds that the game ramps up to, it feels sublime to deftly weave through the poles to efficiently reveal the patterns once you figure them out. And the added challenge of keeping the gems face up after a full loop adds quite a bit of challenge if you ever think you have a full grasp of the game. I lament that I'm unlikely to ever get another person to try out the simultaneous coop.
>>12691597How is it "memoryholed"? You people don't know what these words mean.
>>12692126no modern references or sequels or releases since iwata era
>>12692145NSO, Smash Ultimate, Arcade Archives.
Nintendo wants us to forget about Ice Climber
>>12692157Ice Climbers suspiciously re-added to Smash Ultimate. What did Nintendo mean by this?
>>12692157Was re-released in 2004 for NES Classics series for the GBA. I wish they put Gradius on that series. Xevious is on it, however.
>>12692145It’s literally on NSO anon. I like this game but it’s not exactly Faxanadu.
Nintendo wants us to forget about Wario's Woods
>>12692231I'm tired of the constant Xevious slander in the western retro game community. It's a genuinely fun game.
>>12695138I love Xevious though. It was incredibly popular, but was it more popular in Japan? but I was honestly surprised to see it in there. I wish they included Gradius as well, it sold very well. They put Castlevania in there, so why not?
>>12695157Sorry for misinterpreting your post. Xevious is considered a foundational game in Japan and it's Famicom port was the system's big system seller before Super Mario bros came out.
>>12695189>was the system's big system seller before Super Mario bros came out.Didn't know that. It's a great port. Basic graphics, but it's an early title and plays very well, I play it from time to time. It got reported to arcade as part of the VS line, so a port of a port.
