How do you guys feel about the Spelunker series and similar games?

I used to play the C64 version way back in the day, recently finished the NES one and I'm currently playing (not retro, but the mechanics are mostly unchanged) Spelunker Party! on my Switch. I think it's lots of fun. Has a lot of "fuuuuuck me!" moments, but once you finish a level with max score it feels pretty darn good.

After I'm done with it I'll probably move on to arcade Spelunker games (never tried them) or refresh Montezuma's Revenge, another C64 banger.

Anyway, people seem to shit on them games because they're too punishing, but honestly 90% of the time if (when) I fuck up it's because I got distracted with something or forgot to climb down the rope fully before jumping down etc.

Which is fair, I think? If you 100% focus and get in the zone, it's a breeze.

Anyway, thoughts? Similar game recommendations?

Not sure if they count as retro but I really like Spelunky (1 and 2) by Derek Yu.

I love Montezumas Revenge and somehow Spelunker flew under my radar back in the day. thanks for the rec

Was it difficult?

Fall damage (read as: death) occurs at heights lower than the C64 version, jumping off ropes is much harder too. I want to say it's not THAT hard, but I got in trouble with my wife for swearing in front of the kid (which I normally don't do, especially when doing something fun like playing vidya) and it took me multiple tries, so... harder than the average platformer I guess. But definitely doable eventually.

If it's your first time playing, I'd probably recommend the C64 version over the NES one, even though the Nintendo one looks amazing.

You're welcome. Fun fact: apparently there's been an "extended cut" release of Montezuma's Revenge lately that added some levels to the original game.

Would you guys play Spelunky before moving on to Spelunky 2, or is the sequel more of the same thing but better (engine matured etc., I'm guessing new items and what have you) and the first one can be skipped?

2008 so no they do not, although the first one is close.

you can skip spelunky classic but the HD remake and 2 are both great games

I like it, i just wish the nes version was longer. Making things invisible just feels like a cop out

I like to play it on RA with a fight stick for a real arcadey feel
