The OG handheld came out in 2020 and other versions are even newer than that, so if we go by that metric then the Evercade should be counted as part of the same generation as the PS5, Switch 1/2, etc. But I don't think that's really correct though, is it?

The Evercade was designed from to be a Retro Console, and it even explictly calls itself a Retro Console on the box (picrel). And almost all of the games that are on it are retro games. Sure, there are a few modern indie games on it, but even those are generally designed for old consoles even if they're new games.

The Evercade hardware is powerful enough to emulate up to (but not including) the N64, but not anything more demanding than that. There are a few N64 games that have been ported to it, but that's the important key thing to remember: those games are ports. The Evercade isn't powerful enough to emulate N64 games, so in order for those games to work they had to take the source code of those games and port them to work on the Evercade hardware natively.

But that's about the limit of the Evercade's abilities. It would probably be able to run most low spec mobile games or whatever, but that's pretty much it.

So does it count as a retro console or not? The target audience for this is definitely Retro games. I see zero reason why anyone that isn't into Retro gaming would ever get this, because that's pretty much what it exclusively is.

I have 46 Evercade carts. I would say my favourite is probably the Banjo Kazooie cart.
>>
It's not but then again neither are modern chinese handhelds...

>Does the Evercade count as a Retro Console?
No

>>12694275
Those you can load the original roms on, whatever you want, choose your own OS sometimes, what emulators you want, whatever the hell you want to do.

>Those you can load the original roms on
Almost all of the Evercade games are just the straight up original roms, as far as I know. So if those chinese handhelds count as "retro" because you're emulating old roms, then why wouldn't the Evercade also? The only difference is the games are legally licensed.

You have even better ownership with a chinkheld and don't need to buy your emulation roms on a cuck cartridge though. You have total freedom.

I seriously view this Evercade shit as a threat. It's not even first party. That I would buy, it's an official product and the emulation will at least be done by the company that made the original system, so that's kind of neat. Anyways, all the great emulators we have were basically developed for free more or less for lack of an alternative. Fuck Evercade.

Evercade is a novelty shelfwarmer for gen xers who want some tat, it's not a threat to anything.
>>
>>12694287
How the hell do you have "better ownership" with illictly downloaded ROMs? If the authorities wanted to, they could actually walk into your home and take them away at any time.
>>
>>12694843
If the government decided you shouldn't exist they could drone strike your house. You don't own your life, you are currently just licensed to live.
>>
>>12694843
They'd need a warrant first.
>Honorable Tyrone, we need to bust into anon's house because he downloaded a 40 year old NES game.
>Warrant granted, Officer Hernandez.
Do you think that would happen?
>>
>>12694270
It counts as a piece of shit.
>>
>>12694843
Roms circulating everywhere is completely decentralized and nobody can monopolize it. Companies will charge you for air if they could.
>>
>>12694851
At least my license to live is legitimate
>>12694912
>>12694974
Just because they wouldn't go through the trouble doesn't make those ROMs less illegitimate
>>
>>12695107
Humans were only licensed to live on the African continent. Other continents are pirated content. It is the human condition to pirate.
>>
>>12695115
I'm not arguing about the ethics of piracy I just want to better understand how pirating a game is "more ownership" than buying a legit copy

In the case of evercade, there are reports of carts failing. Apparently they can send you a new cart if it's still under warranty. Also a the namco carts are incompatible with the VS (regular console) and alpha (arcade like console) and only work on the handhelds, to my knowledge this behavior is unique to the namco carts.

Officially yes, and that's because unlike every other company that Evercade licensed games from, Namco was particularly anal about not permitting the cartridge to work on anything other than the OG handheld (or other Evercade handhelds), but NOT Evercade consoles. No other company cared, but Namco did. There's no technical reason why they didn't work, it was artificially blocked from working via a patch at Namco's insistence.

However, at some point since then Blaze quietly and without announcement re-enabled the Namco carts to work on other consoles. Officially they aren't supported, but unofficially they very much do work now. If you don't believe me try it out yourself (with the latest patch). Blaze just can't legally say those carts work or are supported on the VS. but they actually do work.

I don't own any evercade hardware. I was planning on buying one but then I remembered Chinese handhelds exist and bought a Miyoo mini instead lol.

I did a bit of research so that's why I know a few things and I kind of want an alpha with a few taito and neo geo carts
