Did Doom 1 have more realistic looking places than Doom 2 (which was rushed)
Always thought that growing up
>>
yes. the first game had less of an obvious "created in a level editor" vibe.
>>
>>12694615
Doom 2 has better level design in general
>>
Yeah. I feel like the second game had more levels that were 'open to interpretation'. Levels where you filled in the blanks and thought up your own meaning for what some of the levels were
>>
>>12694615
No, ep2 and ep3 were way more rushed than Doom 2
>>
Not really
>>
>>12694615
>Always thought that growing up
Did you only play the first episode?
>>
>>12694615
>Doom II: Hell On Earth
>4/32 levels look anything like something you would see on Earth
What did they mean by this?
>>
>>12694643
I'm guessing its Hell corrupting Earth and making it unrecognizable. That or Earth was already Hell to live on

>Phobos
>go outside
>see this
What did they mean by this?
>>
>>12694615
None of this shit is realistic whatsoever, play Duke 3d
>>
Isn't most of Doom 2 taking place in hell, or near a hell portal?
>>
>>12694654
>It's a Dukefag couldn't wait to talk about Duke in a thread that was completely unrelated to Duke
Look I know your franchise is dead but c'mon. Just can't help yourself, huh.
>>
>>12694663
I prefer Doom but it's no more realistic than super mario bros is.
>>
>>12694615
Really? What kind of lab Deimos lab is?
>>
>>12694654
Duke 3D does look way better but that's because it released way later.
>>
>>12694615
it's a pointless comparison because doom is the same kind of mostly nonsensical abstraction. they're great games but logical evironmental design isn't one of its strongsuits.
>>
>>12694615
Doom2, which I do like, sometimes had to resort to drawing giant arrows on the ground to show the player where to go.
>>
>>12694915
>sometimes
How many times?
>>
>>12694946
>loaded question fagg
>>
>>12694717
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that its illogical evironmental design is one of its strong suits
>>
>>12694946
At least once, which would be some of the time.
>>
>>12694615

The designs were rather more abstract in the original Doom.
>>
>>12694647
This is the canonical explanation for the bizarre nature of some stages in Doom 1 and 2. It's Hell warping reality.
>>
the way the Doom engine works makes E1 look the best
>>
>>12695237
the way shareware model works makes the author put the best looking levels in the first episode.
>>
>>12694647
>That or Earth was already Hell to live on
game takes place in the future at a time when they have bases on Mars. Earth would be hell enough by then.
>>
>>12694630
Wrong.
>>
>>12694615
DꝎM 2's levels look about as good as the first game's until around Dead Simple, if a bit less visually interesting because it's all brown and grey. Starting from the city levels, the texturing and even the lighting are very strange. I personally believe that from that point onwards was when they started to rush things up.
DꝎM 64 mogs anything that came before though.
>>
>>12694653
They made the place habitable by planting trees and stuff I assume.
The skybox is incoherent with the result screen however.
>>
>>12694615
Id didn't really understand level design until they got to Quake 1.
>>
>>12694615
>"we don't want to make maps that look too close to real life"
what the fuck were they thinking
>>
E1 looked like a tech base
E2 looked like a tech base corrupted by bell
E3 looked like hell
Doom2 looks like Sandy Peterson fucking around in the level editor

>>12695367
DOOM64 is peak
>>
>>12694653
you'll note that the skybox crops out everything but the rock formations
>>
>>12695661
duly noted
>>
Nah, Doom II has environments that look like real places instead of abstract labyrinths.
>>
>>12694653
Imagine living in that bit of China then sitting down to play Doom. How would you feel
>>
>>12695654
You give too much credit to E2 and E3, it's just an unpolished set of levels with bad texturing looking mostly like caverns

>DOOM64 is peak
Oh, a D64fag. This explains everything
>>
>>12695804
Like the emperor has bestowed his blessings with a nice blue jacket (surrounded by acid)
>>
>>12694615
>It's that thread again
This is worse than Sonic 3 versus S&K threads.
>>
>>12694643
You have to use your imagination, anon. I'ts like playing with legos. Not everything you see is what you think you are supposed to see.
>>
>>12694653
Doom 1 was a prequel of plutonia because it takes place in earth (theorically)
>>
>>12694946
Any Sandy fucking Peterson level.
