The real answer is ports.
While every game could be designed without a select button, games that are designed with extra buttons in mind may have an awkward transition to a controller with less buttons.

The people consuming ports are uninformed cattle and sub median IQ gorillas. These same people play games with the touch screens on their phones they dont care about awkward port controls. Ask all the people in the OoT PC port threads which controller they are using, theyll shout from the rooftops that this is the definitive version while playing with a fisher price speak and spell.

It isn't worthless, a second start or menu button is something that's quite useful. The lack of real select button is a real disadvantage of PS4 and PS5 controllers.

In the 1% of games where thats actually useful they are welcome to program one of the face buttons into a menu button. game devs are allowed to make ANY button on the controller do what they want.

that controller removes the L and R buttons, and replaces them with the C and Z buttons. There are no Dreamcast games as far as I know that register the C, Z, L, and R buttons separately all at the same time. MvC 2 when using that controller omits the L and R and re-registers them and displays them as C and Z.
