>the DC can handle eight gameplay buttons>but no controller actually included all eightBut why?
Yuji Naka wanted to actually simplify the controls and Sega complied
>>12694883It was the other way around
>>12694880Z and C are just L and R replicated.
>>12694880Why is the cable still coming off the bottom of the controller?
>>12694880
>>12695004I've got that in translucent lime green
>>12694936So you can plug it in to your bellybutton. This thread made me hate the dreamcast.
Can someone please explain to me why Sega never bothered to give their controllers a "Select" button or something similar
>>12694919Are they, though? Street Fighter Alpha 3 will give you different button mappings if it sees a Z and C button.
>>12695301select is a worthless button, it has horrific ergonomics requiring you to take your thumb off the dpad and its only ever used (if it even is used) as a start button.
>>12695301Usecase for a select button?Nintendo dropped it on both the N64 and GameCube as well.
>>12695345>Nintendo dropped it on both the N64 and GameCube as well. And then they bought it back. The real answer is ports. While every game could be designed without a select button, games that are designed with extra buttons in mind may have an awkward transition to a controller with less buttons.
>>12695353The people consuming ports are uninformed cattle and sub median IQ gorillas. These same people play games with the touch screens on their phones they dont care about awkward port controls. Ask all the people in the OoT PC port threads which controller they are using, theyll shout from the rooftops that this is the definitive version while playing with a fisher price speak and spell.
>>12695331It isn't worthless, a second start or menu button is something that's quite useful. The lack of real select button is a real disadvantage of PS4 and PS5 controllers.
>>12695039I've got one of those too.
>>12695382>a second start or menu button is something that's quite usefulIn the 1% of games where thats actually useful they are welcome to program one of the face buttons into a menu button. game devs are allowed to make ANY button on the controller do what they want.
>>12695398its used asa map button in like 90% of fucking games. you ever even play a fucking video game before?
>>12695409Are you really having a meltdown over the map button being forced to not be on the select button rather than another button somewhere else? Here this one is going to blow your mind, I DELETED the start button! and now its a different button over here named 3! Gonna cry?
>a late dc prototype supposedly had 6 controller ports>only one photo exists>the extras may or may not have just been for debuggingWhere the FUCK did this come from and where is it now?
>>12694880the cost to add those extra buttons to the board is trivial and having it as an expansion option later is worthwhile
>>12694880oh and it might also have to do with the VMU, the little memory card with a screen that you could mount on the controller. they had two buttons.
Real question why has the standard been 4 face buttons instead of 6?
>>12695516Other than fighting games, almost no games benefit from 6 face buttons.
>>12695039I actually downloaded a shit ton of dreamcast games and I'm having a really good time. V rally 2 is fun as fuck. Changes my mind, I don't hate the dreamcast
>>12695301They turned it into the C button
>>12694880that controller removes the L and R buttons, and replaces them with the C and Z buttons. There are no Dreamcast games as far as I know that register the C, Z, L, and R buttons separately all at the same time. MvC 2 when using that controller omits the L and R and re-registers them and displays them as C and Z.
