there's over 100 Super Famicom exclusive RPGs that have english translations now. How many have you played? What are your favorites? Picrel is pretty damn good so far. My favorite is DQ3make, which is still the best and definitive version of that game.
>>12695104Yeah probably DQ3 is my favorite as well, also Metal Max Returns.I like the Snes has so many nes remakes, I wish games like Mother 1 and Z2 also got official remakes
>>12695104I'm really hoping I like Mystic Ark. That cover art is so cool and intriguing. I'll be starting it sometime this week. I gave Bahamut Lagoon a try and it was so unbelievably slow and I think I'm going to put it down for now.
Mystic Ark is good but very uneven imo. The start first two worlds are pretty bad due to the lack of enemy variety. Then the next couple worlds have pretty good combat, but then balance takes a nosedive in the world populated by children and never recovers. The different worlds are cool and original though and they were a nice change of scenery from the usual JRPG fare, for instance the world populated by pirate cats except there is no water.
>>12695104> that have english translationsand what about the ones that never will?
>>12695114its awesome anon, very surreal and unpredictable rpg. I didn't like bahamut lagoon either, but I really cant get into SRPGs in general because like you said they are so slow.
>>12695119You can play the superior DS version
>>12695127It's pretty much not even the same game and it's not superior
>>12695104Mystic Ark is the first fan translation I ever played. I never finished it but I still have my save from 2014. I still chip away at it every now and then. I think I'm in the vegetable world.
>played: DQ V, DQ VI, DQ I+II, DQ III, FFV, Live a Live, Seiken Densetsu 3, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Treasure of the Rudras, Magical Land of Wozz, Eternal Filena, G.O.D.favorites are DQ VI and G.O.D. Sucks most westerners have only played the soulless DS port of VI instead of the real version. I've shilled G.O.D. on this board plenty before, but if you're not familiar its the heavily earthbound inspired JRPG before that was ever a thing. To the point where in the intro section where the MC is a little kid, you are wearing Ness' outfit. but it's much edgier and darker than EB, and forms its own identity. Basic premise is that you are in a post apocalyptic future of real life Earth where aliens have conquered most of humanity and you gather some psychic wunderkids to fight back. Gameplay is basic JRPG shit with some light class customization via the chakra system. But if you play RPGs for the story, characters and atmosphere like I do, its really solid. Lots of big twists that will keep you guessing what happens next and filled with small sovlful moments and quirky humor that contrasts nicely with a serious grimdark plot.
Ever heard of a lil gem called CHRONO TRIGGER?
I played Glory of Heracles III recently. It's an interesting game. It's too jank for mainstream audiences, but it's got too many good ideas to be true kuso. There really are some neat things in there, like the concept of collective party members (you can get followed by a group of NPCs that act as one in battle and losing HP eventually turns into some of them dying), the whole idea behind getting spells by visiting temples, and the wild story. The story is a major reason people would be interested in it nowadays, since it's what Nojima did before FFVII and it shows. It has all his favorite things. Time loops, Gaia theory, amnesia, crossdressing...it's like a dry run of FFVII. The gameplay is mostly a DQ clone, though the groups of generics are neat, the party AI is actually very good, and items that cast spells are multi-use and plentiful. But holy crap there are so many encounters and they're so slow. Five PCs and up to seven enemies is going to be slow even with good party AI, and then some enemies can infinitely summon and it sucks ass. It's not strictly speaking a hard game, but it's very easy to lose characters. Then there's stuff like the day-night cycle which is relvant all of once and then never again, or how you have to crossdress a couple times in the game but it never checks if you took the dress off so you can wear it through the whole game if you want. Music and graphics are just okay. They're there. The graphics are pretty dark for an SNES game. Sakuga Data East. All in all, I'm glad I played it but you need to highly value originality over polish to get anything out of it.
>>12695734I liked this one a lot, Greek mythos lend itself really well to JRPGs and it had good combat. I liked how weapons/items you can use in combat for spells break after a while and have a limited number of uses (albeit generous), it's a nice compromise and an attempt to fix how utterly broken similar weapons were in 2.I liked IV even more despite being easier. Its main mechanic is that you can turn your characters into other characters that you meet along the way (NPCs) and each have different abilities.
