I'm playing MediEvil.
I like that Sir Dan's head moves around, makes me conscious of him as a separate person. Also if he has no weapons he pulls off his left arm and uses that to hit enemies.
He has a redemption arc, being that he fell very early on in a decisive battle won by the villain, but now has a chance to right wrongs. Quite a bit of character for someone who doesn't talk, at least I think so.

It is a wonderful little game, isn't it?
Shame the sequel sucked.

>Shame the sequel sucked.
I'm still looking forward to it because I like Victorian settings.
Although I don't know why Sir Dan would be there.
>>
>>12696823
It makes sense since victorians notoriously made fun of, and high tales of, medieval times.
>>
>>12696834
oh right, I guess that makes sense.
The voicelines in this game has a bit of an echo effect. I know MGS1 was the same but they disliked it enough to re-do the voicelines altogether for Twin Snakes. It made me wonder whether or not if developers back then actually sought an echo effect to make use of Sony's audio on the Playstation or something like that.
>>
>it's an insects level
>>
>>12696809
>Shame the sequel sucked.
First time I hear of this. It's a great game if you don't suck.
>>
>>12697063
If you don't suck, save all your money for the last level and stock up on vials, you'll still be met with health fountains that don't replenish themselves and hurt you when you stand on them, gold armor that is not worth its price, several ranged weapons that are utterly worthless wastes of money, annoying squid enemies that deal guaranteed damage if they latch onto your head, and a worse ending if you go out of your way to get all the chalices.
>>
>the button to duck/shield is the same you use to make Sir Dan charge

>>12697159
I did it.
That was annoying though.
>>
I only remember the demo for pizza hut. It had akuji the heartless and legacy of kain. Pretty cool.
>>
I started 2 now. I remember playing the demo a lot back in 2000 thinking it was so cool, real blast from the past. I'm 35 now (today).
>>
>>12696758
This was actually a very good underrated game that deserves more recognition. I don’t know how the sequel is though.
>>
This series looks very SOVLful. Thanks for bringing it up OP and anons.
>>
Is the remake any good? Thinking about buying it.
>>
>>12700234
never played, but this game is still fine, and 2 has some QoL additions

Happy birthday
>>
>>12700274
Thanks mate.
>>
>>12696809
The sequel didn't suck, it just expanded a bit too much on the original formula. Which is normal for developers to do, but it doesn't always have a positive outcome. They had to balance staying true to the original while being different from the original and in my opinion they went a bit too far on the latter. Still, a solid game though.
>>
so i loved the first game, do i try the sequel
>>
>>12700551
Keep an open mind but don't expect any miracles. The sequel is definitely not bad, but different.
>>
I remember Medievil 2 having these kind of criticism
>fall damage added for no reason when the fitting punishment for falling a jump here is just having to climb up again
>health fountains don't refill even tho at least money does but this can really softlock someone's game
>the game relies on the player getting all the chalices first time because you always get a weapon that's immediately useful the next level; not exceptionally good design for casual players
>the game is a bit shorter, it's maybe 10 full missions ? but imo it's more packed and coherent as a whole
>this is subjective but some people dislike the setting, characters, story, Dan having almost-voice lines

One thing I think not many people disliked is you sometimes get to set Dan's head on one of the green hands you actually see running around already in the first game.

Personally I still like 2 more than 1 just because you don't spend any time larping on the world map and replaying levels because you missed some key item you didn't know existed.
>>
>>12700234
The PS4 remake is excellent
The PSP remake is one of the worst remakes I've ever played
>>
>this shit
Apparently it's hard even if you have experience playing fighters, which I have not done for decades. I can see why some people say they don't like the direction the sequel took.
>>
>>12702123
ok nevermind, R2 and Square is an OP uppercut which ends the fight quite quickly.
>>
>>12696758
Weird I just replayed Medievil 1 the other day and am finally playing 2 for the first time
2 is such a STRANGE fucking game
They just completely throw you into it, barely even feels coherent with its atmosphere and story compared to the flawless first game
I’ll say too that while Dan controls better in 2, chopping off enemy parts one by one as they continue to attack is frustrating and I find myself actually being challenged unlike 1 (where I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen the game over screen)
>>
>>12702241
Just beat 2, my thoughts:
>they tried to up the difficulty by making enemies super aggressive and hit like tanks, but you just don’t have the combat abilities to fend them off reliably. Enemies either have too much HP or are confusingly immune to some weapons to the point where I wonder if I’m actually playing the game correctly
>every ranged weapon besides the very first pistol is completely useless, they all do so little damage, hurt you (bombs), or just do not target reliably enough (crossbow)
>absolutely zero narrative cohesion. The first game had you traveling a map and logically going from place to place, but 2 “takes place in London” and you just warp to the most random locations like a vampire manor or the docks with no actual rhyme or reason beyond “Palethorn is up to stuff!!”
>why is the mummy Kiya girl even here
>everything respawns in levels EXCEPT for health fountains? But they kept the “retain health and ammo levels between missions” ? This makes topping up resources needlessly grindy because you have to basically just replay the Museum and get the health vials over and over if you reach a bad state
>chicken drumsticks just don’t work half the time or have such a delayed reaction that you might as well never use them
>the fucking green Cthulhu octopus enemies
>dan hand is worthless
>villain voice acting is fantastic but somehow was recorded at the lowest possible volume compared to every other voice line (and Dan speaks now?)
>weapons become useless almost immediately after finishing their intended level
I’d rather replay the PSP remake than 2 desu, 1 and PS4-1 are still the kings
>>
>>12696809
>Shame the sequel sucked.
MediEvil 2 was such a disappointment, I still can't believe it. In a way it's even worse than the PS4 remake being a dud since MediEvil 2 actually came out on the same hardware as the original game. And the dickheads that made it even won a BAFTA for it, so they probably thought they did a great job.
>>
>>12696840
Apparently Metal Gear Solid's English voice-acting was recorded in like just some regular house in LA, or some shit like that, and so you could hear cars passing by in the street outside when the audio wasn't compressed to hell to fit on standard 700MB CDs along with all the other assets. But the voice-acting in Twin Snakes is somehow way worse despite having all the same people involved only a few years later. Even if MGS1 was technically an inferior recording; the actual performances were way better.

cool spooky skeleton game. never played the sequel. still hated the jumping "puzzles". worst offender being the flying pirate ship stage. won't wanna replay that.
>>
>>12697063
MediEvil 2 being such a downgrade is literally what stopped MediEvil 3 ever getting made. They remade the far superior first game fucking TWICE instead of making MediEvil 3.
>>
>>12697159
>>12697162
it's a shield bash/charge.
>>
>>12703147
Incredible to me that they made 2’s true ending into a cliffhanger as if to imply their new story direction was worth continuing
Incredible that they felt the need to make a sequel at all when 1 told a nice, complete little tale and had a satisfying conclusion
>>
>Worse camera system
>Dodgy combat where running around in circles is the only efficient tactic
>Worse hitboxes
>Weird controls
>Worse voice acting for Dan
>Clunkier bossfights
>Health fountains don't replenish, and hurt you when they're empty
>Golden Armor is too expensive even if you don't buy anything from the Spiv until the final level
>Flying enemies take forever to die
>Octopus enemies are annoying and are hard to hit even with the hammer
>Unkillable enemies
>Fall damage for a fucking UNDEAD SKELETON
>Getting all the chalices gives you the bad ending
Medievil 2 is okay, but it will never be as good as Medievil 1.

The weird thing is MediEvil was set in a fantasy land called Gallowmere, and then MediEvil 2 is set in... "real world" Victorian England? It's like they had already run out of ideas. I guess that's why all they could come up with in the PS2-era was a remake of the first game for the PSP.
>>
>>12705076
The second game had a different writing team, which probably contributed to the change in tone and setting.
>>
>>12705076

At least the series went out on a high note with the 2019 PS4 remake
Masterclass of how to do a remake correctly

>I'm playing MediEvil.
Based.
I didn't even need to read past that, but I did and I appreciate your appreciation of little details. I always describe MediEvil as a game that's more than the sum of its parts. It's a fine game, but there's a ton of charm in everything from the art to the world to the characters in it, and even if it's imperfect I like the way it plays. It stumbles, but it doesn't feel like every other platformer or action game.

>>12696823
The setting is the best part about it. It's what carried the game in my head for two decades as being better than the first, but that facade came crumbling down a few years ago when I played them back to back again for the first time since. I didn't even bother finishing it.
You should definitely at least give it a try, though.

>>12705076
I loved the setting when I first played it. Now I still really like it, but it definitely doesn't have the same charm as Gallowmere. The concept of the occult bringing old English fairytales to life in Victorian England was great -- but while the colorful cast of characters aren't terrible, I didn't like Dan having a group of cartoonish dudes in tow the whole game.
>>
>>12705480
I don't see how anyone would think MediEvil 2019 is superior to the original, especially when the Resident Evil 2 remake already came out way earlier in 2019. I don't think RE2 Remake is necessarily better than the original game, but it was a "true remake" rather than a glorified remaster like MediEvil 2019.

OP here, I beat 2 just now. I have to say 2 is a slight disappointment, I agree with the scepticism expressed by the other posts here. This post >>12703247 about sums it up. I was looking forward to the Victorian setting and I like London, but ultimately that was all a bit irrelevant. I don't like the time travel stuff, it just feels like a last minute addition. The overall effect is that while 1 felt like a tight package with its own lore, redemption arc, locations, and setting, they made 2 far too generic. It's not surprising another sequel wasn't made if they had trouble explaining to Sony "ok what is this IP actually about? It's just an undead warrior?"
I just wonder how much better a sequel could have been if they retained the Gallowmere setting. They must have had SOME idea for it.
btw I used to live just a few doors away from the now-defunct Indian takeaway shown in the credits of Medievil 2, just on Sleaford Street. Loads of very good pubs within walking distance there with more cask ale than I can drink. I miss living in Cambridge.

>while 1 felt like a tight package with its own lore, redemption arc, locations, and setting, they made 2 far too generic
Pretty much.
They should've made the sequel about Lord Kardok getting revenge or something. You know, the secondary bad guy with a name and introduction and his own bossfight... that shows up in the last 5 minutes of the final level and dies 5 minutes later.
>>
The only part of the sequel I liked was the freakshow, only level to match the charm of the first game and of course the only part of 2 to be referenced in the PSP remake.

>>12703142
Resurrection wasn't even that bad, I mean sure it may not have been as charming as the original, some classic levels were missing (Ant Caves, The Asylum Grounds, The Lake, The Crystal Caves, The Gallows Gauntlet, The Time Device etc) and the comic relief genie was totally unnecessary but it did a lot of things right too, and actually improved the gameplay slightly.

Imps, if you kill them you get your weapons back. It's the first one that causes issues because it hits Dan as soon as he enters the room.

>>
>>12705076
I think it's because Dan's coffin was moved out of his crypt in Gallowmere and into some britbong city as a display piece. As >>12696834 said, victorians liked to pilfer the past.
>>
>>12703163
Well it's more because Medi2 is what you'd expect in a number 3 game not a direct sequel. The best we could get is a Medi1.5 sequel after the events of 1 but decades before 2 obviously.

If MediEvil 3 were to get made it would most likely be a soulslike, because nobody plays colourful cartoony platformers anymore unless they're 2D indie games.
>>
>>12707978
>it would most likely be a soulslike
Medievil was what Dark Souls would be many years later anyway
>>
>>12707994
As much as I'd love MediEvil 3 I don't trust modern Sony to do it justice. They had their chance years ago and the best they could do was a low-effort cashgrab remake that didn't even improve the gameplay of the original. And now that Sony is burning through all the good will they've built up the last three decades, it's safe to say the dream is over.

>mfw I turn 35 in a couple of weeks
>also enjoyed the ME2 demo and played it a thousand times as a kid
Based same age poster.

I must warn you that ME2 is quite disappointing. It somehow managed to feel like an even more primitive version of the first game. The best part of it is the OST, which is genuinely stellar (you may remember how good the track from the demo was; the rest of the game has great tunes just like that one).
>>
Absolutely love this game, played it through loads over the years. There's something really comfy about it, it's spooky in a wholesome, chunky, theme-park-at-Halloween sorta way and I love how British it feels. Zarok sadly going "Bugger." when you beat his champion always cracks me up. Fantastic music and sound design, too.
>>
>>12708115
I agree. The 2019 game getting the green light for development was the last real chance of ever getting a proper MediEvil 3. A wasted opportunity.
