Ocean Deep is kinda neat. Might be better in another engine but this is functional. I think the lighting could be fixed up - especially just finding the ship the first time - whole area could be made more visually interesting. Prob should just turn off radiation suit green light nonsense. I couldn't get it to run in the latest version of Chocolate Doom too. Ran into an error and shutdown upon loading a level. And I barely use chocolate doom so I don't mess with the settings much. I did get it running in Nugget 5.1 + latest Crispy. Prob works in Cherry too. Oh and it needs a different soundtrack from the default doom's for RE appeal.
O SHIT ZOMBIESSHOOT EM IN THE HEAD
Uh....and Hellknights too..I guess
are there any guides on making good textures for quake or doom? i wanna learn but too dumb without guides
WADSUP IS MOVED TO:wadsup.xyzclovr is down atm.when it comes back I'll see if I can do something fun with it. It was running windows (for convenience with some games), so I'll switch to Linux see what I can do. I'd like to host more things in-browser l but we'll see what I can hack together.
>>12697464those be barens
>>12697485Like from scratch?Aside from the low resolution and color palette, there's not much different from making textures for anything else. So you can follow along with more generic guides (there's a lot of them) then tweak stuff to look good in palette.
>>12697464What's with the Resi zombies
>>12697442WHOOPS!>>12697459>Might be better in another engine It definitely calls for another engine. Like, genuine props for all that effort, but you seriously need to AT LEAST fork ChocoDoom or something to smooth over a few of the glaring seams.
>>12697537I released version 1.0 on the 22 of July to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Quake. I just forgot to say something about being included in the OP. I just reset the server again for the 1.2 update for anyone interested connect 161.153.62.180:27500
>>12697517I've been playing a bunch of brutalist jam maps and liked a lot of those textures, was curious what you'd need to start making stuff like that specifically. They seem a bit more complicated than your standard run of the mill doom/quake stuff however
>>12697556Well you have shit taste and all those textures were soullessly mass produced on a node graph in Adobe Substance Designer by a professional game developer™ so if you really emulate those you better fork over a fat check to Adobe every month and start learning to impassionately plug autistic fucking math nodes into each other like your career at a AAAA game studio depends on it.
>>12697564oh so it's not hand drawn in any way? i'm not touching adobe with a 12 ft pole, I just wanted some fun texture projects and a bit of material to learn from
>>12697556I personally thought about making some textures and I was just going to adapt real photos Im going to take. Cement walls, brick walls, wood walls, gravel road, grass. The world around you is full of textures.
>>12697556Fuck I need to get around to finishing those. So damn cool.
>>12697572yeah there's some really interesting levels there, I specifically liked the sense of scale some of those maps had
>>12697429FUCKING IMPSGET YOUR ASSES BACK HERE
>>12697569>oh so it's not hand drawn in any way?Nope. You'll be staring at pic related and modifying nodes the whole way through while it outputs a cube which you get the texture from.
>>12697431>[06-13] Duke Nukem Zero Hour Overclocked releasedI know I'm late to the party but FUCK YEAR, ZERO HOURIf you like Duke, this one is sadly overlooked.
>>12697460Are those RE zombies? What wad?
>>12697596This shit isn't even hard to do by hand. I've handcrafted entire texture sets by just making them from one 'core' texture (creating brickwork, trims, blocks, floortiles, pillars, decorations, etc, out of one kind of base stone texture to get a consistent look), and it's really not hard to do that with common tools like PaintNet, Photoshop (pirate it), Aseprite, etc.Anything reasonably advanced that can do layers and shit, and which you can wrap your head around.Doing shit like brutalist concrete blocks would be among the easier, as you're doing simple gray block shapes with smooth and flat surfaces.
>>12697571You can literally do this, yes. One of the wall textures in Doom is literally Kevin Cloud tripping and scrubbing his knee on the way to the iD office one morning, and (probably) Adrian Carmack decided "Let's digitize it and put it in the game, lol!"
I've been out of the loop for, like, a year. What happened to Doomer Boards and DBP?

>>12697730>zoomerismIt's been used since at least the early 2010s, newfriend
>>12697682Fuck, I remember trying this shit on an emulator and getting filtered by the controls forever ago. Might as well give it a try now.
>>12697730Secondary is an old term, and it strictly refers to people who are 'fans' of a content only through the fanart and fan works, but haven't touched the source material. They consume the 'secondary' content only. It's a type of poser, and it's about the people who actively pretend.Anon's use of it is incorrect, because the other anon is actually playing, and probably just had a brainfart or something.>>12697750Even older, I think.>>12697747>Can't tell you why it might be getting used more over similar terms, though. There's legions of secondaries on places like Xitter, where they'll bend over backwards on why they are still actual fans of this or that, yet make up very ridiculous bullshit reasons as to why they won't play or watch something, and that asking them to just engage with the source material itself is oppression or something. This pestilence of pretending dipshits has probably caused people to be more conscious of the phenomenon, and more eager to call it out (even if using it incorrectly).

>>12697801>>12697824the assets didnt change just the game logic so it only matters if you are hosting your own games. Thank you I shall work on balance tweaks. Would love to hear any other suggestions you may have.
>>12697569>i'm not touching adobe with a 12 ft pole, I just wanted some fun texture projects and a bit of material to learn fromYou don't need Adobe to do node-based textures and materials, Blender and Unreal can do that shit as well. The advantage of working with models as a basis for textures is that it's easier to turn them into normal maps based off the geometry, not that that's relevant for Doom but if you decide to mess about with Source or similar you can leverage it.Any real designer is going to be using SideFX Houdini or similar, not Adobe shit.
>>12697682>this one is sadly overlookedYou mean sadly overcloocked

>>12697923Okay I begun doing things.
haven't played doom or checked in here for a while any good wads release lately?
are there any wads or FPS games in general that make good use of pre-rendered and/or photo assets? I'm trying to get the style down but it feels a bit jank, pic related. these feel more like Fallout isometric props or item icons rather than regular billboard sprites looking at games like Blood, Redneck, Ashes etc they tend to use a lot of handpainted pixel art images made from scratch, and that's definitely not my strong suit closest I've found is the non-retro and deliberately garish Slayers X
>>12697429So I've beat Half Life 1, BS and OF, what are some good mods? Shooting soldiers was fun
>>12698286I would recommend Half-Life: Echoes and Field Intensity. They are both relatively recent mods that are phenomenal. Field Intensity is basically an expansion of OF, while Echoes feels more distinct from the original games.
>>12698278We did a mini expansion of levels to Ad Mortem last Halloween, and also we tried making a few maps for Eternity.
>>12698279Doom itself uses a lot of digitized stuff, but you know that. Duke 3D similarly uses a mix of digitized photo stuff and hand drawn, but also a lot of pre-rendered 3D models, like almost all the monsters and weapons, and some props.
>>12698209Eyyy, you did it!
>>12698286They Hunger is neat. It's not a mod really, but you should pay Gunman too.
>>12698313oh nirvana is easythis map however
Is there something I'm missing with the discs of repulsion in Hexen? They don't actually seem that useful, but the game just dumps assloads of them on you at certain points.
>>12698276>captures screenshot in doom>posts system screenshot
>>12698523Extra damage and the chance to induce infighting/distraction.
>>12698523Good for breathing room and it repels projectiles. Enemies also die from fall damage so you can blast them off edges.
>>12697489Honestly this website is an incredible concept. Far better than idgames in every way, for its intuitive tagging system but mostly because there's actual screenshots which is a huge plus in my mind, though I wish it were allowed to have more than 4. If it ever needs funding for storage I'll gladly donate.
>>12698303Not him, but thanks, I don't think I tried Field Intensity yet.
>>12698250RESUMING
>>12697569The guy who made Otex advocates for Substance Designer despite apparently never using it. This means that despite being high quality, Otex was made without node based generation, which isn't surprising given he started making making textures before that tool even existed. He made some youtube videos about using Photoshop to make Doom textures, but they don't cover the absolute basics. Obviously, it's trivial to pirate any Adobe product, but I still prefer Gimp. Last thread, someone was advocating for Kirita, since it seems to have something comparable to the look up table (LUT) that Ukiro advocates in one of these videos. https://doom.ukiro.com/2020/12/28/i-made-some-videos-about-photoshop/
>>12698303Echoes is genuinely great and its only failing is that it's too short. It covers the Black Mesa disaster in one day, when from Gordon's perspective it took two.>Field IntensityThe bad voice acting really turned me away. Maybe I'll get around to it later.
Opened my map on Slade and saw this. What is a "marker"?
>>12698765just delete one of them
>>12698681Paused at 05:07:16
>>12698741>Last thread, someone was advocating for KiritaThat was me. It really is great to work with and I've settled on a general setup that gets decent results consistently:>set texture image size to 2X what it will be in-game>add palettize adjustment layer WITH dithering (whichever dither type looks best for the material)>add pixelize adjustment layer set to 2x2 to preview how it will look at the final size>add another palettize layer WITHOUT dithering to snap pixelated colors back to where they need to be>go back and add any color correction, levels, or sharpening layers BEFORE the first palettize if neededYou can adjust the texture in any way you need to and see how it will look without permanently losing colors to palettization. Being at 2X final res also means you have some wiggle room to push pixels around without horribly distorting things. Unfortunately Krita seemingly can't export in a specified color palette (only auto-generated ones from the colors in the image) so I'm just copy/pasting the whole image into a GIMP file already setup with the palette I'm using. You also need to actually scale the image down 2x, without any filtering since it's already pixelated. I very much recommend this brush set because it has a number of brushes that let you push pixel elements around in different ways without blurring the colors together:https://github.com/Rakurri/rakurri-brush-set-for-krita/releases/tag/V2.0
>>12698523Spamming them keeps away enemies and projectiles, making you quasi-invulnerable. They also damage monsters and can cause infighting.
>>12698829I should note also that you can have adjustment layers affect a whole group rather than a single image layer by dragging them out to under the group header instead. So you can layer painted adjustments or other stuff on top of whatever you're using as a base and still get the same results. Each adjustment layer also has a mask that is opaque (white) by default, but you can paint them out. So if you are making textures for Quake you can have a separate palettize layer just for fullbrights covering anything meant to glow while the other palettize can have an inverse of that mask and be the rest of the palette.
>>12698826Resuming again
>>12698616Thanks. It's maybe a *little* hodgepodge, but I think we got it to a place where it's pretty usable. The "try it" button didn't seem to survive server migration so I'll have to look into that when I get a chance.I don't want it to be an exhaustive list of every wad ever like idgames, just a convenient place for /vr/ (or any other rando who stumbles in it) to find wads to play. But if it gets expensive I'll look into options. Right now I think it's only ~8gigs of data. Wads are (usually) small.
>>12698279>are there any wads or FPS games in general that make good use of pre-rendered and/or photo assets?P much all the main sprites (enemies, weapons) in these games are made from digitalized physical models or pre-rendered 3d ones, from scratch, pixel stuff is used mainly for items/hud/decoration things. They also had to be heavily edited to be usable as sprites, you can see weapon models where they added some highlights to make the thing stand out/pop better.I was wondering about this process myself, but i only have some stuff from my abandoned crappy project that show many of the problems of Slayers X's sprites, and none of their upsides of course.Someone post the original Blood cultist clay model, i swear it looks so fckn cute.
These guys can fuck right off. They're not even hard, they're just a rocket tax when you meet one.
>>12698909That one valley with the three of them, is it possible to kill them or are you actually just supposed to run to the ship?
>>12698909>Titan fight? Time to empty the gunk gun!I never use it for anything else.
>>12698912Honestly, I find all the guns useful. Unreal is the only retro FPS I've played that I can think of where all the guns feel relevant and useful throughout the campaign so far. There's no gun that I feel is obsolete or kind of shit even now I've got everything and that's impressive really.Oh, and hey, it's that castle from the tech demo intro!
>>12698616>>12698889Actually it looks like the form put the vigor wad in the wrong place too, so I have to sort that out as well. Probably a feature of an updated plug-in. I'll move it tonight...
>>12698909I hate it when their rocks decide to break up into smaller pieces and start bouncing around on the geometry behind me, so while I'm focusing on him throwing even more rocks, one of them decides to just turn around and instagib me. Luckily there's maybe two spots in the game that can happen regularly.
>>12698910There were four for me on hard, and I was dumb and stood my ground. At least they all died.
>playing hexen on archimage difficultyIt's not fair, why are the frost shards shittier than the Wendigo's attack
Don't really work with photos but can talk about hand drawing textures.>Specific program doesn't matter too much, so long as it supports different kinds of brushes. Been using CSP but there's no reason Krita or whatever can't be used instead.>Personal choice is to not trace over real life photos, but this is one of those things where most people won't pile on you for doing so, but obviously you start with line art.>The human brain is stupidly good at finding patterns and this is most likely something being repeated a lot so you do need to keep it in mind. The easiest way is to make a lot of little details all over so as there's nothing to stand out too hard to the eye.>The worst thing you can do is one or two massive details that draw the eye (unless that's the intent. The bigger any one detail is, the more it's gonna stick out wen you repeat it. >Positioning of the detail doesn't actually matter that much whether it's in the center or not since you're repeating it.>For random or "natural" textures, clusters of detail with single bits strewn about looks more natural than something where nothing is clumped up.>Lines not actually aligning when the textures repeats is going to drive you mad and there's a few options for addressing this. Personally, the most direct method when hand drawing is just doing shit like holding shift and ensuring that the line is flat with no deviation leading to the opposite side of the texture and using that as the starting point for the line on the opposite side.>Depending on your shading method, shading at the edges can be a pain in the ass due to inconsistencies becoming apparent. Usually it's for the best to just avoid stuff that requires more annoying/intricate work right at the edges to minimize those issues.>Weathering, almost always done with a different brush than you used for the flat coloring/shading/linework, is similar. Tile and more obviously segmented stuff is better for this since you minimize inconsistency on edges.

Let's say I wanted to command respect and admiration from random strangers on the Internet, with an achievement I could hang my hat on.Should I play through Quake on Hard or should I go balls out and play through it on Nightmare?
Holy fuck this was difficult. Probably harder than map 04, but also more fun. I was actually getting decently consistent at everything except the last bit (reaching the end from the red key area), which is a complete clusterfuck.

>>12698995Play on nightmare and ignore that one guy when he shows up to try to tell you how um ackshually it's really easy or whatever.

>>12698995Shamblers can be annoying, you'll have a hard time being able to dodge attacks from vores, but otherwise it's not that bad.
>>12698995I prefer Quake on hard, but nightmare isn't the joke difficulty it is in Doom. It CAN make certain situations easier despite what that other anon said due to Ogres spamming their grenade launchers and being mostly immobile, but it's only specific situations so don't expect a breeze.

>>12699331>What is the point in cheap foreign labor when it turns all your products to shit and tanks your stockBecause it boosts it short term and there is no actual value in a long term investment in any company stock these days. Unless you're using those stocks as collateral or some such, you wanna flip that shit for as big a number as you can as soon as you can. Realizing those gains ASAP and investing those gains to let your even greater pile of wealth produce more wealth is the entire modus operandi of it.Riding out a rough patch or keeping your money in something stable is not the best move in the game the investors in these companies are playing.

Opinions on the Doom 3 Phobos mod? I was looking at a few videos on it and it honestly looks a lot better than Doom 3 itself which was probably an average at best game. I like the attempt at a horror themed Doom game but there was a lot that could have been better with the game. This mod seems to not only address many flaws of Doom 3 but it also has its own story to stand on its own merits. I am interested in trying it out one day.
>>12699887>This mod seems to not only address many flaws of Doom 3 but it also has its own story to stand on its own merits. That story has prevented me from getting more than an hour into it, making me appreciate how much more straight-to-the-point the original campaign is. D3 itself isn't too bad and with a few mods gets pretty fun.
So why doesn't Quake have an automap like Doom?
Map 24Again not that bad. I did the blue door skip so I could reach the distant megasphere early, but in hindsight it might actually not matter that much.I somehow managed to die 4 times close to the end in this blue pinky room, so I'm pretty sick of the map now.
>>12699897Because it's 3D and there wasn't any convenient way to show a fully 3D environment on a map screen without either just rendering the whole level (and rape your performance) or go through and make a simplified map model for every level in the game.

what's the scoop on Shadow Warrior? I love Blood, bounced off Duke a few times idk if I'm fucking retarded but I always get lost on the first map, after a certain point I have no idea what it wants me to do. I've beat all of Blood and Doom and those both have some labyrinthine maps at times, no ideawith Blood I love the lighthearted horror atmosphere and how the gameplay feels like a flow state between tactical and chaotic, and it's just overflowing with charm SW seems pretty fun mechanically but its setting seems the worst of the big three Build games
>>12700367Ultra made these sprites awhile back, so I animated it and added the little fall over animation at the end there. This will probably be added to BYOC as a follower/pet

>>12700370It has my favorite gameplay of all the Build engine games. 1 of 2So, I finished Unreal for the first time. I have mixed thoughts on it:>The atmosphere was great, it really sold the long journey and hostile planet feel they were going for>The guns were all pretty good, but considering I'm used to using beefier versions in Unreal Tournament that's no surprise. None of them were shit, and even the worst of them had a purpose. It could have done with a BFG equivalent though, the minigun doesn't count it's just a big hitscan machine gun.>The enemy AI was fantastic, why can't the have enemies like this in modern games? The Scaarj actually act like they want to survive, they're like good deathmatch bots at all times.>It's the prettiest retro FPS by far, some sections had me stopping and marveling at them, and I wish I could have seen this stuff back in the day when it was super impressive.>I don't understand why people (not in this thread) have told me it's mostly a walking sim or a tech demo. The occasions where's you're not fighting are few and when you get these sections they're a welcome breather from the intense combat and to soak up the atmosphere.>God damn is the music fantastic. I recognised the guy as the musician behind the Deus Ex soundtrack, it sounds very similar in places.
>>127004432 of 2But>The journey felt more like an aimless wander than anything else, the Prisoner just goes in a general direction before stumbling on the mothership. Half-Life did the long journey better by having characters telling Freeman where to go and what he needs to do to get through the facility>Fuck me the enemies were tanky and it took getting used to. Titans were far too tanky and I hated them and their bouncing one hit kill rocks that could slap you from behind. For the huge enemy variety I didn't know the Mercenaries and Skaarj soldiers were different enemies because they look the same. I only just found out checking out the wiki now I'm done. Gasbags looked silly, like platformer enemies.>Some levels straight up locked you in a room and spat endless amounts of the same enemies at you. I actually thought a few places in the Cellar had infinitely spawning enemies at one point, what's with the lockdown arenas all of a sudden? At least with Doom and Quake you know when it's going to end for the most part.>Want secrets? Better hope the Nali don't get killed by the nearby enemies who'll target them immediately. In general they sucked, I was expecting to help them resist since I had a translator but instead they just sat around, worshipping me and larping as Jesus on their crosses. They deserve the Skaarj.>The game took a nosedive after the castle. I'd rather play Xen again than go through the mothership one more time.In all, I think I enjoyed it enough that the flaws are more nitpicks and I'm going to try the expansion next. I still much prefer Half-Life, but I'm going to miss fighting enemies that actively avoid being shot once this is all over. I guess I should try out the expansion now though.
>>12700443>The enemy AI was fantastic, why can't the have enemies like this in modern games? The Scaarj actually act like they want to survive, they're like good deathmatch bots at all times.it's unfortunate that the only imitation i can think of is Halo and that game mostly sucks.
man I love half life I really like playing hl1 mods especially old ones, I find it very charming when they have custom textures and you can see a bright spot on the texture because the creator of the mod just took a picture of an object in their house with a flash on and used that as the texture I like making maps and it reminds me how much harder thing used to be when we didn't have as many resources available on the internet, you had to take pictures yourself or buy CDs with textures

The Sunspire was awesome for it though.>>12700447>Want secrets? Better hope the Nali don't get killed by the nearby enemies who'll target them immediately.I think at a certain point in development the devs also felt that sentiment, the Na'li stopped being important for secrets and there were more instances of Na'li torture as it went onand yeah fuck the Mothership, I just ran through it, except that one level you go through twice, I got really lost there.
>>12700452I'd like it a lot more if the levels weren't so repetitive and tedious. It starts out pretty promising with the first actual level on the "halo" itself.
>>12700367Got around to actually messing with something to replace the automap and this feels like a good baseline to work with. Gonna have to mess around a bit to figure out a good way to have it update mid-level. Also gotta try and figure out a good way to get the old one back for the people who desperately want the old automap.
>>12700452Yeah, I never got into Halo or saw it's appeal. Bad level design, annoying enemies, slow floaty movement and a two weapon limit. If it were a PC FPS originally it would likely be forgotten.
>>12700472>If it were a PC FPS originally it would likely be forgottenIf Microsoft hadn’t stepped in, it would have probably proceeded to become that RTS it was initially intended to be. I also doubt it would have sold as much, and most of the appeal was playing slayer matches with your bros on the couch and even more via system link.

>>12700464>Some areas feel bigger than they probably should have been to show off as well; a lot of empty spaceIt was weird how some areas felt like they would be important or secrets but then they had nothing going on. Why is the crypt under Bluff Eversmoking some secret area if nothing is there? What's the point of the gondola in the castle that only serves to show you a Nali being airstriked if you go? It's really bizarre.
Map 27Again pretty easy, even when screwing up as much as I do here.I'm half-considering doing invuln-less runs of this map and 28, which should be more interesting. But I kind of want to be done with this so I can start on my 666-minutes map.
>>12700539>Nali being airstrikedNot on my watch!Legitimately, it was cool seeing the huge, long path he’d take to get there, showcasing how they could have the AI “figure it out.” It’s why I liked the Sunspire so much: Those troopers could decide to leap down a level and still figure out how to get to you and flank you.

The datapad entries were enough to string me along, I even got somewhat invested into the ones relating to Kira.
>>12700668I knew she'd be dead, but it sucked finding her corpse in the belltower.Speaking of the story, I found it funny how the Skaarj never once seemed to give a shit who you were. In all other FPS campaigns the villains are cursing your name by the midpoint, but even at the end they're just "Uhhhhh some random human is in our mothership for some reason?"I guess it shows how under their radar you are despite all the damage you're doing. You're just one annoying alien the troops report seeing now and then but you're nothing special to the Skaarj.
>>12700652yep I did I remember enjoying it though I don't have any particular scenes from it in my headIf I were to pick a fav mod I think I'd pick hazardous course 2 because of how different it isIt's really interesting and surprising with it's slapstick humor which is a weird things to say about a hl1 mod that's mostly focused on beating difficult puzzle/platforming It's probably one of the hardest and funniest mods out there
My Nightmare run is going great.
>>12700710>I guess it shows how under their radar you are despite all the damage you're doing. You're just one annoying alien the troops report seeing now and then but you're nothing special to the Skaarj. It's not like you're the only human either, and they've seemingly dealt with a lot already. It's quite the opposite of something like Half-Life 2 where everyone's praising Gordon/the player and being amazed at seeing them. The expansion tries put some more importance on the player as well as no longer leaving them a blank slate, for better and worse. I'm not a fan and am happy that Return to Na Pali Ultimate gets rid of the voiceovers and the cutscenes (as well as restores cut levels from the vanilla campaign.)

Nice art, the levels look great for the time, greater than all other Build games despite having bad level design there and there. Good soundtrack. Yer scattergun and crossbow are decent weapons. >>12701505If you want the most vanilla playthrough possible it's the best sourceport, plus it's easy to use since it uses the music in your \id1\music folderIt comes with freelook On by default in it's included config file, but you'll probably want that anywayThe only thing I change from the default settings is lowering the brightness and setting Always Run to On
>>12701354>>12701356pistol is weaker, shotgun is weaker (I swear it does more damage with autoaim on, as if more pellets get glued to the enemies), expander is completely useless without autoaim. With on, it turns into one of the strongest guns in the game, unfortunately locked behind ep4 and lack of ammo. This problem is much worse in Shadow Warrior. Uzis, riot gun, railgun all useless. Notice the pattern? All hitscan weapons. It's not as prominent in Blood but it helps against way too many tiny enemies and makes flare gun stronger. As for RR you know how shitty guns there are, now imagine if they couldn't hit shit. That's how it plays without autoaim
>>12701552meant to tag >>12701363 too
>>12701552If you're using a modern sourceport i.e. duke32 then, in the case of duke, all the weapons are perfectly usable with autoaim off with a bit jank that comes from firing hitscans at enemies on a different Z level than yourself. I never had much problem with using the expander as well, in fact I found it rather reliable for mid distance sniping as long as you just do one click and not hold it down. Same case for Blood, the only thing that is janky is shooting enemies above/below where 1/50 times the game will just not register what it would've the 49 other times. It has been ages since I've replayed SW personally, I just think it is not even close to being as good as duke/blood, but I distinctly recall turning off auto aim as well and can't recall having any significant problems. There is just a bit of general jank that you can't get out of build engine's DNA even with modern sourceports, but autoaim is absolutely not necessary to play the games and use hitscan weapons
>>12701354>Because I feel like the Shrinker is easier to use without autoaim seeing as you can better aim at the feet of Battlelords and consistently shrink the bastards. That’s arguably a case of ‘no autoaim’ being too strong: There’s no way to disable it through vanilla Duke3D, those battlelords were meant to be fought and not just immediately shut down with the shrink gun.I otherwise second every hitscan weapon in the Build games to be designed with autoaim in mind. Blood is the most tolerable to play without it because of the smoother, predictable movement of the enemies, but I can’t imagine anyone at Monolith balanced those harder difficulties without it. I recall even the manual suggesting turning it on.

Question: What is the longest base game retro FPS campaign (in hours)? Not count expansion packs or canonized mods.
>>12701678I know it isn't but Half-Life has always felt really long to me. System Shock 2 I've heard is even longer.I'm making my way through Marathon 2 and I'm only halfway through and have 9 hours logged in, and I'm reading every terminal. BUT I am also looking at a guide to find every secret I've missed so that's probably inflating my hours
>Return to Na Pali>Get rescued>Nah, fuck you, go back down thereWell fuck you too. The voice acting is a bit jarring, but at least there's male and female voice acting, it remembers me keeping the standard female prisoner (which I kept for the novelty of being a female character in one of these) so that's nice. I already really like the assault rifle, but the reuse of the "holy shit, look at this neat alien world" theme from the start of the base game doesn't hit anywhere near as hard.
>>12701678Blood has pretty big one. 4 episodes, 5 if you count the last one that was added later
>>12701749It's a cheap cashgrab made using a lot of the rejected maps for the main game.
>>12701678Depending on how much foreknowledge you have, Hexen 2 can be pretty long.SiN is decently long I think.
>>12701028Unbelievably ugly graphics and incredibly lazy gameplay. This game came out a year after Quake
>>12701750I just finished episode 2 and I could not believe it had only been like 16 maps total, it's so fucking longalso I believe this is the ideal way to play
>>12701756That's a shame to hear. I'm just enjoying the opportunity to fight more Skaarj. It's kind of silly hearing the Prisoner shit scared of them in the between map audiologs when she single handedly fucked them over recently though.
>>12701028Around half of the levels are pretty good and half of the levels feel like mediocre mazes. The only one that is really bad is Uranium Mines IIRC.The relatively high definition art probably gives it some of the best visuals among old Build games. The worst thing about the game is a lack of the enemy variety and I say this as someone who likes Hexen 1.Rides Again is better in almost every way.>>12701168>Soundtrack is nice, but I don't like to play the levels while listening to it. Without it there's a slightly unsettling and comfortable atmosphere, especially when it comes to the asylum.Yeah, the ambient in the game is great and I'm definitely not saying this just because I had a pirated copy without the CD music back in the day. RR is two different games with and without music.Honestly, the only thing that came close to me in terms of atmosphere it got is Fallout 3: Point Lookout DLC. Too bad FO3 is trash.
>>12701795You can always play Operation Na Pali mod for UT. It's single player and was considered kind of a big deal back in the day 20-something years ago.
>>12701795At least you stuck with the female prisoner. The voiceover for the male is horribly phoned in and nasally. If you wanted ‘more Unreal’ it’s a nice expansion pack but doesn’t do a whole lot that’s new. In fact the cut levels that the Ultimate mod adds provide more variety and maps made from original campaign authors.
Blood would be way better if they had any sense of restraint and didn't try using 6 fucking keys nearly every level
>>12701552Never had zero problems without autoaim.Maybe it's because of the sourceport?
>>12701818I think it varies by port, by game, even enemy. Duke’s drones feel much less annoying with hitscan aim-assist enabled.
do Hexen or Heretic have any mods like Blood's Death Wish or Thief's The Black Parade? ie God-tier fan mods
I can't believe I survived this. You can easily take 150+ damage on the final stairs. I thought I was doomed with only 86 health, and getting through there only taking 15 damage is some absolutely crazy luck. The room before that with the three paths over lava is also really difficult.

>>12702527I don't like Selaco. Couldn't tell you why, something about it triggers my brain
>>12702543My problem with it is all of the weapons feel very safe and contemporary.
>>12702543Different strokes for different folks but Selaco is a top 5 shooter of all time for me>>12702546While I can't agree with you completely, I do like how Selaco really makes you use the level layout and enemy AI over just situational weapons
>>12702527Even though the Steam reviews are full of whiners I loved Incision, it's like a fleshmech game that plays like Quake 1 with a lifesystem instead of saving
>>12702543Aside from the boring, overhyped gameplay I really just hated how it looked. Designs range from generic to terrible. Weapons in particular are incredibly lame with most of them just being modern cock of doody guns with random glowing shit tacked on. They're also weirdly high res which doesn't match the pixelated look of everything else. All the environment textures look really flat too, and seem to be in a completely different style from the spritework. But then you have the lazily done dynamic lighting that makes things look even flatter somehow. Of course there's also the screen effects. Whoever decided those looked good or somehow positively added to the game experience should be put in an asylum.
>>12702527They’re both fun. The odd one out for me is Supplice, which is weird because I feel like I should really like it: It reminds me of BTSX which I loved, it has the same sprite artist as Ion Fury, the levels I tried were fun to go through…Not sure what’s up.Maybe its the weapons? I kind of wish I could go through it with my gameplay mod of choice.
>>12701882>>12701907What a gamer!
>>12701882My fucking man. I feel that one of the critical reasons that Nightmare is doable at all is that not only do you get double ammo per pickup in general, but very specifically because 1 Bulk Cell gives you a whopping 200 Cell ammo, which is a shitload of extra firepower, and that can make such a critical difference.>>12701907Turbopinkies zooming around always looks so funny to me, but also like it would be stressful to deal with them overall. Do you plan to try out Final Doom next? It's doable, people HAVE done it on Nightmare, just not very many people.
>>12702165Mapping in AlephOne is great. Not too hard to wrap your head around once you get the basics. Similarly editing weapon and enemy stats is piss easy with shapefusion and making terminals is straight forward, though a pain to test. Everything else is just a pain in the dick once you start doing anything the original trilogy didn't do. There's just a lot of shit that's hard-coded or otherwise not supported. Want a charged shot to use something other than 4 units of ammo? Too bad! Want a reload animation for the second ammo type of a weapon? Not on your life. Turning off Delayed Hard Death on flying enemies was necessary to make it so that they left food when "cooked," but that apparently caused weird bugs with their corpses because no one in the last 20 years thought to turn that option off on fliers. In some ways, it's been a boon because it mitigates scope creep, but damn does it suck to run face first into some of the limitations, particularly the fact that maps are restricted to a size that is pretty damn small.
>>12702058>The guy in OP was one of the most commonly used actors in these edits. When he found out, he was really chill with it. People like when a guy doesn't sperg out over someone having fun.Eh? I don't recognize the guy in the OP. Also it took until just now to realize the OP says>ANALOUS MATERIALSand not Anomalous. That's quite funny.
I like Ion Fury as a game and in its setting more than the other Build games. Shelly sucks at one liners, however.

>>12702875>I don't recognize the guy in the OPHe's 'Kazuya.'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3YeXm4zr9o
>>12702883Doom's Nightmare changes the game more because it's extremely unrelenting and forgiving, and it becomes this sort of quasi-speedrun where you more or less need to haul ass to the exit as fast as you can (barring certain staging/timing), because there's a proverbial noose around your neck that's tightening all the time. With Quake's Nightmare, monsters die permanently, and in Duke's hardest monsters do respawn, but you can permanently destroy their bodies with stuff like explosives and other weapons with gibbitude, which adds a special tactical layer to that gameplay.Quake and Duke are comparatively more easygoing, even if they do up their respective challenge considerably by their own metrics, so I can see why they're an easier sell. I'm not good enough at Doom to do Nightmare, so personally I like the middleground idea of the absolute hardass mode letting you get footholds by smartly applying explosives (however, I'm not as good at Duke as I am at Doom, lol).I very much enjoy watching successful Doom Nightmare gameplay, because it's a real spectacle.
>>12702923>picMe waking up still extremely tired and with a dry mouth, looking at the water bottle I left at literally arm's reach but I'm too tired and lazy to grab it
>>12702527I could never get into Ion Fury at all. Plus the lines themselves are shit, with no wit or humor at all.
>>12702527I have yet to get past the second map in Selaco because I'm fucking lost since I first bought it. I enjoy its setting more than its gameplay, however.>>12702989I only agree with your bit on Shelly's personality. >>12702858TNT probably not. I have explored Plutonia in the past, and I think around 2/3rds of maps are doable without resorting to things like glides, death exits, rocket jumps to skip half the map and so on.I might try doing actual runs for these one day but I don't think I'll be able to do all of them. Then again, some Doom 2 maps also feel completely impossible at first until you figure out a route.

>>12703194It appears way more open ended than it really is. I don't even know why - I think I just run past into the apartments for the loot + secrets and opening up the wayback on repeat playthroughs.>Planting the bombs in the Roamers junkyard. There is a warehouse where a guard is standing in front of it and will talk to you if you try to walk past him - just walk past him anyway and he will interrogate you when you leave. This was the only part of that late game quest I considered an issue. I kept thinking I needed to find another way in and not to just walk past him and bullshit my way out. Everything else is straight forward. Also I think you are better off playing an older version of Afterglow - before the lighting change in GZDoom. I think the new lighting just makes Afterglow specifically way too dark and breaks the light economy which is usually very generous.
>>12703432Noted. I don't think I'll come back to it anytime soon since I'm sick and tired of Doom, plus I didn't *love* Ashes to begin with. Not even trying to be a hater here, it's competent enough and undoubtedly looks quite good but it never made me go "wow I must play all of this" either.
>>12703432Why hasn't UZDoom re-added the old lighting modes? And I always used noclip for the bug dog race cause one of the racers is way too fast and you can get stuck in the ditches too easily.
>>12703468Yeah that's understandable.
>>12703432I'm pretty sure the latest standalone builds of Afterglow now force the engine light mode to the intended dark one. If not, you can use a console command gl_maplightmode 3
>>12703545I thought even with the changes + setting the light command manually to gl_maplightmode 3 that the game was way too dark in later versions. Like comparing Michonne/Bloodsport to the first few releases and you can barely see in later versions.

>>12704440Yeah he's done a good job on that, very nice stuff. I'll drop wad build next thread so y'all can use them in other maps.
>>12704440BTSX textures suck. You can make only BTSX maps with them. So the project leader said that we could use custom textures and sky transfers, so I said good. So every time I needed a texture, I just made one myself and converted it into BTSX palette - it was better than trying to do anything with the crap I had at hand. But it took a lot of time, because BTSX palette produces overbright spots I had to clear manually.
>>12704457>BTSX palette produces overbright spots I had to clear manually.I realize this is a bit late for you, but in case someone else runs into this issue, you can convert graphics more easily by using a modified btsx palette. This just replaces the fullbright colors with black, so they won't be assigned those entries automatically on accident. I assume this works because the first entry is already black so it always chooses that, but maybe it's just that light black looks the same as dark black, whatever. Just throw it inside a wad in slade, rename it "playpal", then left click > palette > add to custom palette. Rename it something like "btsx no fullbrights" and use that to convert assets instead.https://files.catbox.moe/jst2ms.pal
What will be the final filename for the wad?666vr.wad? 666minvr.wad? vr666.wad?>>12704473Do textures work with original btsx palette in the end?
>>12704479>Do textures work with original btsx palette in the end?Yep. The reason I already know this is because I made this:https://desuarchive.org/vr/thread/12371927/#q12382510If you have certain assets you know will be fullbright anyway, like hud elements or skies, you can use the default palette for conversion.
>>12704457Well, I know from past efforts that you make worthwhile maps, but it's gonna look weird as hell to have a map with just stock textures in it like that.Personally, I love how BTSX looks as .wads, but it's actually cumbersome as fuck to work with all these textures, since it's bigger than even OTEX, I think, so just paging through textures looking for what I need or what might fit takes up more than than it's ever done on any other project. I can definitely see why someone wouldn't want to work on it just on that point alone, if I ever were to touch the BTSX set again, I would want to trim a shitload of fat from it for that reason alone (also filesize).>You can make only BTSX maps with themNot gonna disagree much, they definitely had very specific scopes in mind. I think you could make other things, it's just inconvenient for anything not BTSX.
>>12704473>>12704479Now that I've taken a closer look, the btsx colormap is slightly different between e1, e2 and these resources. This means the palette I shared before won't work for these assets, but making another new palette shouldn't be too hard. You'd need to replace the entries in the playpal which correspond to the colors which don't get darker going down the correct colormap you see here. It's possible that someone else has already made this on doomworld or something, it kind of seems like an obvious problem. >>12704495One of the reasons I prefer Otex in general is the restraint it shows in making only a few color edits of any given material, usually with some unique shape elements do distinguish them as well.
I miss when quaddicted was updated and quake injector loaded the dependencies automatically. Twice already have I downloaded stuff from slipseer, played like half a map before I realized it was a map for AD or copper.
>>12704519>Twice already have I downloaded stuff from slipseer, played like half a map before I realized it was a map for AD or copper. That genuinely sounds like you not reading. I have long been dissatisfied with the way people interpret Doom. It is not a horror game, nor it is a game where you are up against seemingly unsurmountable odds.Doom is a game where one exerts pure masculine strength against the fucking menstrual evil of effeminacy. The Romans were destroyed when they became effeminate, and Doom is a game that reminds you that unless you reach the highest echelon of masculinity, you are an active threat to both masculine Kampf and to your nation. Listen to the sounds Doomguy makes when he is in pain. Guttural roars of relish, because he knows that he will strike back with a thousand times what he has been dealt. The reason that Doomguy screams like a sissy when he dies is because the apotheosis of masculinity DOES NOT DIE. It is not masculine to die, to be weak, to be frail, to suffer whatsoever. Masculine Kampf is creating so much bloodshed that the world turns red with that blood. Prevail! PREVAIL! Only a coward would ever let his body succumb to external forces. A man who dies in conflict is no different than a faggot raped in the ass and becoming damaged goods forever. Being penetrated by a bullet or by a ball of fire is no different than being penetrated by a thick, hard phallus of war. The phallus is a soldier, much like Doomguy, and anything it defiles is something we can safely sequester in a prison or asylum, perhaps used for hard labour but for nothing else.
>>12705219I want you to know I genuinely enjoy your other posts but this one you got it wrong, wrong, wrong. You cannot pretend to honor masculinity while at the same time dishonoring the dead, especially those who have died in combat. It doesn't work out, because you'd be giving your children contradictory values. You're not a man worth listening to any longer, I'm sorry. It's a shame because you genuinely had good ideas.

>>12705065There's like four variations of these things I've seen. Worst I've seen in this aspect is that one wad that has these things got a sequel and then the enemy got some stats altered for it. There's just a total lack of consistency that's going on here, the enemy really enables it in a bad way imo.I'm also not a fan of it sharing a near one-to-one silhouette with barons and knights. Explosive immunity is always fucking cancer too. And it's double fucking cancer if the WAD has both cybruisers and 1000hp cybers. So I think I prefer 1000hp Cybers because it's just a healthpool shrink, but I don't like that it shares a silhouette with the main man himself. I'm not sure if making Cybermanlets (between the cyber and baron) like how the Mastermind has Arachnos would be a solution as I've not run across that so far, but I'd be willing to see it.But maybe rockets are just too powerful to belong to anything but the cyber. I want to suggest grenadiers from Hardfest as the alternative explosive enemy but I've yet to experience what it's like to deal with bouncing explosives, so I can't say how I'd feel about them taking precedence over these two enemies.
Give me a neat concept to build around. I have no inspiration, but I want to contribute to the project.

In that 1 year where he was gone, we had some of the best DBPs in recent years, all two month projects. He comes back, shits up the place with new rules, bans old users, drives the most talented mappers away, refuses to playtest for the ones he dislikes and writes endless essays about shit nobody cares about. He is the one responsible for the decline. It was not just the fucking Charlie Kirk thread that caused the schism of users. Dozens of users deleted themselves because 40iq couldn't leave anyone alone, he always had to intervene during any kind of banter, he started throwing out warnings and bans like candy. There was nobody left to map, because he pissed everyone else off. He let that old schizo Kontra Kommando become a second admin for many months, which made things even worse. One day even the schizo couldn't take 40iq's shit anymore and deleted himself off the forum, and 40iq has never made a statement about this ever since. I feel that for other people's future mapping efforts, to make it a much less cumbersome resource for some random dudes to just pick up and use for an average mapping jam, the BTSX texture set would need shitloads of redundant fat trimmed, and maybe also lifting a couple of things from OTEX to fill some of the gaps (I'm pretty sure he made a lot of the BTSX ones anyway, just looking at them).I would also suggest skipping the whole adherence to vanila animated texture slots and shit, because I think most people would choose to map for Boom/MBF21 out of convenience. That would be an absolute anus shipment of work to adapt OTEX textures to the BTSX palette though (or maybe both to some kind of 'optimized' palette), so I would never ever do this. Just pretend I'm an ideas guy who's scratching his asscrack.
>>12699031I like them when a map uses vores creatively, they are at their best when used as some bullshit spider attached to the side of a wall or on top of a tower throwing missiles at you while you fight other enemies. >>12706572>(I'm pretty sure he made a lot of the BTSX ones anyway, just looking at them)Sarah Mancuso and Sven Ruthner.Though it goes without saying that Björling, particularly his Darkening E2 work is a huge inspiration on the former, while being a contemporary old pixel guy with the latter, so they probably share some creative ideas as well.

I did not use gzdoom too often, can you guys just clarify something for me - most wads / pk3s require you to select doom 2 on launch, rather than (ultimate) doom? I kinda always wonder if the mod is using this on that and I assume both can't work? I always wonder why don't wads just add d1 / d2 to filename.
Looking back at the enemies in Doom 3 that were new additions, it's kinda crazy how much redundancy and lack of creativity there is from a gameplay perspective. Multiple things that are basically just imps with an unmeaningful gimmick. Bruiser is just Mancubus on ozempic. Ticks and Trites are functionally identical and just lame. The Vagary is the most interesting enemy mechanically, but you only fight her maybe twice?I wonder if the cramped interior level design meant to show off le grafix stopped them from even trying to make enemies that do interesting things.
