Is all the hate justified?
>>12697848No
>>12697848No, I liked it when it came out and I’d probably still like it now.
It's still on my backlog to play since the day it came out. >Released 2003>My backlog stretches back 23+ years Wtf anons
I wanted to play this game again for the longest time.I remember playing a demo climbing some buildings or even zip lining.
>>12697880I know that feel. I'm currently struggling to accept that I'll never be able to play all the games I want to, due to being an adult with a job and not a kid anymore. It sucks.
>>12697887The only upside is they stopped making good games, so thankfully the backlog is finite.
>>12697848It was a little better than I remembered when I replayed it recently but it's still a broken mess, mainly because the controls are much worse than classic TR. The problem is the developers got a little too ambitious since it was the first PS2 game but they didn't have the time to finish everything they wanted the game to have, so it kind of feels like a beta to play. Even the remastered version didn't fix much. There are some memorable parts but overall it just doesn't play as smoothly as the older games.
>>12697880delete your backlog. only play one game at a time. when you finish it think of the next game to play and go download it and play it.
>>12697848It was extremely disappointing, but at the same time there alternatives out there. Like that Buffy game on Xbox which came out a year before this, it was a better modern TR game than most of their attempts.
>>12697848It was a mediocre entry in a franchise people were already growing sick of.
>>12697848KindaMechanically, it's a mess, and even after copius amount of fixes, it's still half-functionalThe big-ass ambitious plans were just that - plans, while production didn't started for real until late 2002 (any prior work had to be scrapped). The story is fucking laughably silly, but takes itself too serious, even for its era.Said all that, this is a classic case of game that got rushed to stores, rather than it being impossible to fix the game by November release plans. Eidos basically threw Tomb Raider under the bus to stay afloat as acompany, forcing release five months ahead of planned schedule, despite Core being on track to deliver on November.Would the planned trilogy be any good? I sincerely doubt it. Could AoD be way better by simply developing it until October, rather than early May? Very fucking much possible.
>>12697848Initially, yes, it shipped with a ton of bugs.
>>12697848>I can't move this>turn some random crank>I feel stronger now!FFS, if you wanna let the player go on a key hunt just plop a DOOR in the way and hide the key somewhere. It's literally the same. That would also prevent the frustration of not making a jump because it was actually another key hunt when Lara does not even say sth like "I don't think I can make that jump!"
>>12697848I disliked how slow and unathletic she is compared to the other games
>>12701868she ate too much pizza
>>12697848Oh yeah. I still like all the Paris parts. I was always one of those "but I like the urban levels" assholes.
They milked the franchise so much during the 5th gen and people grew tired of it. They didn't know what to do next so they came up with such dumb ideas to deviate from the previous games. Something similar to RE4, but more athletic, was their best bet, but they were too dumb to figure that out.Tomb Raider Legend did better because people were desperate for a new TR game.
Underwhelming final boss of the century. After how much it has been hyped up as THE ULTIMATE LIFE FORM it is really disappoitning. Also that the ULTIMATE ULTIMATE one never actually comes alive. You cannot tease the player with the ultimate threat for all life on Earth as soon as it becomes alive - and then just have him do some stabby stab stabs against some lame human sized one and that is it?Everybody who played it was so expecting the creature to come alive and then having to fight an epic REAL final boss fight against it. Come on, after all that build up.
>>12697880I've been meaning to play FFX since 2002 (when it released in Australia) and I only finally started playing it for the first time earlier this year in 2026.
>>12697848It's unironically my favorite Tomb Raider, so no. Grew up with all the classics btw. AoD's style and soundtrack are unfathomably kino.
>>12697848Yes. Gamers got used to the controls, then they changed everything "just to be different." Then it had all sorts of little bugs in it because Eidos bullied CORE to get them game out as soon as possible while constantly bullying CORE to make all sorts of last-minute changes that caused delays. Then when the game doesn't do well Eidos blames CORE and shuts CORE down for the bullcrap that was Eidos's fault. And it was supposed to be the beginning of a new series that continues after Last Revelation. it was supposed to lead up to how Lara escaped the pyramid and what became of Seth who had gotten released. None of that will ever be resolved now.
>>12703485EIDOS got used to getting handed a 1 million+ selling game every single year in the PS1 generation. In the next generation with higher graphics capacity, that's no longer a feasible business model. They wanted AOD done NOW, and they kept making creative changes that added to delays. And let's not forget how they also shut down Kronos after Fear Effect 2 came out because that game for the PS1 came out in 2001, which was a year after the PS2 came out.
>>12697848I vaguely remember reading that Sony forced them to change the controls at the last minute due to some analog control mandate for PS2 games, and supposedly the earlier versions had controls more similar to the classic series. Can anyone confirm? Some of these old interviews are hard to find now.
>>12703503I'll never forgive those faggots for cancelling the Core remake of the first game. The Crystal Dynamics remake was better than Legend due to the original game being better but was ultimately a huge letdown.
>>12703505I don't know if that's plausible since the PS1 and PS2 controllers were the same thing. >>12703510I personally don't like any CD games. Their LAU trilogy is all railgames where you go the only direction you can go with QTE tossed in, and there's no sense of exploration at all. Their Nu-Lara trilogy is Uncharted, but RPG skill-levelling and exp-farming tossed in while all having the exact same story of "Lara versus doomsday cult" but in three different settings. And they failed to deliver an ancient Egyptian adventure, which would have been much cooler than trash island with some Asian stuff, or fucking stone-age Central American tribal people who's ancestors built complex machine puzzles.
>>12703531>I don't know if that's plausible since the PS1 and PS2 controllers were the same thing. All of the PS1 games were designed around the D-pad since the Dual Shock was just an optional purchase at the time, and with a DS controller it just mapped the D-pad controls to the analog sticks anyway.I think the point was that Sony wanted every game to be more fully analog controlled since it was the default controller for PS2. The only question is how far into development it was before they knew this. I'm pretty sure the PC version was still centered around digital controls though since DS-style analog PC controllers weren't very common at that time.
>>12697848Yes. Urban focused tomb raider is a interesting idea, but just isn't tomb raider. None of the new systems like the rpg one actually feel integrated and the story and kurtis are just not very interesting. Then there are the bugs.>>12701679>Said all that, this is a classic case of game that got rushed to storesIt was not rushed. The problem was that eidos took 2/3 of cd team for the final ps1 tomb raider game and refused to buy ps2 devkits for the remaining 1/3.Once the team was back to full numbers, they had to scrap practically everything.>>12703503>1 million+ selling game every single yearThat trend died out after 3 already.>And let's not forget how they also shut down Kronos after Fear Effect 2They didn't just shut them down, they shut them down when the game was practically not even a year left until release. The leaked beta and every info shows they were in the final stretch of development. God i hate them for canning inferno.>>12703531>I personally don't like any CD gamesMost tomb fans don't. They are just generic action adventure games copying what was popular in that era.The devs have also publicly shown their hatred of the original team and Lara. One of the main guys at CD was celebrating the shutdown of Core.
>>12703605>One of the main guys at CD was celebrating the shutdown of Core.Things like this are why I have no hope for the new games, but it's hilarious that over 20 years later they're still having to admit that Core Lara was and still is more beloved.
>>12703485>Then when the game doesn't do well Eidos blames CORE and shuts CORE down for the bullcrap that was Eidos's fault. Not what happened. After AOD flopped they were on thin ice and they pitched a tomb raider 1 remake which eidos agreed on,barely. During that time CD finished and shipped legend which sold a lot.CD learned core was making a remake and constantly badgered eidos to not allow it.When eidos told them no they started working on their own remake without getting eidos approval.Once eidos found out, they had to choose one version, obviously they chose CD because of legend sales.Typical californian scum.
>>12703190Damn, same anon you replied to - it took me about 20 years to get around to FFX as well. But in the end I played that game twice within about a year, once on Vita then on PS4.
>>12703605>Planned Release Date: November 2003>Actual Release Date: June 2003>No, this was not rushed, I swear!>Goes on utterly unrelated tangentEidos face a choice by the yearly financial report in April 2003: either they release AoD as it is by yesterday, no matter what, or the company goes under by July 2003.
>>12697848It was unfinished. before the last boss lara recognizes Karel even though she had never met him. but that was because of a cut section where she was supposed to meet him but they didn't change the cutscene
>>12704035>Planned Release Date: November 2003Wrong year it was november 2002.I have no idea where you got november 2003.The game got delayed twice, that is not what a rushed game looks like.>Eidos face a choice by the yearly financial report in April 2003They did not face a choice. They gave them two delays and weren't gonna give them a third.June was the agreed date after the second delay.I don't care what blogs or irrelevant interviews you post. The game wasn't rushed, it was sabotaged by eidos from the get-go.
>>12704781it was angelina jolies fault if the 2nd movie hadnt come out in july it could have been delayed again and everything would have been fixed
