Here's two conceptually similar hacks that came out recently:
>NES Donkey Kong, but Mario behaves more like SMB1 Mario (SMB1 sprites, no fall damage, controllable jump)
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/9802/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHO9W7uiIxA

The Famicom version is basically a completely different game. The Super Nintendo version is also heavily modified from the original arcade game, but it's probably my favorite. Since you are emulating anyway you might as well try them all, the arcade, famicom, and SNES versions.

Another update on the worst operating system (mostly behind the scenes stuff):

>Restructured the windowing system
Now there's a dedicated window manager that handles creating and managing windows. The windows themselves have no innate appearance or functionality (not even a titlebar). A separate GUI toolkit uses these windows to implement high-level controls like buttons.

>Switched to client-side window decorations
This means that the application itself is responsible for creating its own titlebars, window borders, close buttons, etc.. This both simplifies the window manager and makes it possible to put whatever you want in the titlebar area, like tabs or menus.

>Added support for non-rectangular clipping regions
Clipping regions are used to limit drawing to specific areas of the screen. Before, clipping regions had to be rectangular. Now they can be any shape.

This feature is used by the windowing system to draw only the visible parts of a window, ignoring any areas that are hidden behind obstructions. It's a lot of extra work doing it this way, but it has one big advantage: it makes window drawing order-independent. This is pretty much required for multitasking to work. Otherwise, you end up with a ton of flickering and synchronization issues.

>Added a basic form of cooperative multitasking
Each task has its own message queue, which it uses to process messages from the window manager. It's about as simple as it gets.

>Show window contents while dragging
It's just a few extra lines of code, so I figured why not try it? I wasn't expecting much, but it's surprisingly smooth. Even with poorly optimized code, the CPU tears right through it. It's crazy what 93 MHz can do.
>>
>>12699305

>The most UNOFFICIAL ROM Hack to finally fix all of the issues that have kept Donkey Kong feeling like a stagnant relic!
>Mario can now, you know, JUMP. Finally bringing parity between this and later games.
>I also added Luigi, but had to mess up some other graphics. Despite me knowing what’s best for the game, objectively, I couldn’t decide what color scheme he should use. So both Mario and Luigi have alternative options in a separate patch.
>What’s that? This ruins the entire game? But it’s for Quality of Life!
Oh yes silly me I forgot that "parity between this and later games" actually means SMB1 physics.

Recently learned the secret of bank switching, NES is even better than 16 bit consoles at this for CHR rom switching but wasn't really pushed as far as it could have been.

Tools created, they have simple gui interfaces
Attribute editor
Bitplane converter
Tilemap layout editor

>is that just another asset rip put into a crappy engine
yep

Its more about having a set of tools for people to easily get graphics onto the screen for 8 bit games. The tools just automate tedious hex editing and data alignment.
>>
>>12704506
I'd like to support memory cards, even if it's not very practical. They only officially hold 32 KB of data, not accounting for file system overhead. There's also a hard cap of 16 files.

Currently, disk I/O is very limited. The only thing it supports is reading from a quick-and-dirty file system that's embedded in the ROM. It provides just enough functionality that it can load up a few bitmaps and fonts. Eventually, I plan to add libcart support. That way, it can access the full file system on a flash cart. Other possibilities include mounting the transfer pak, or even 64DD disks.

>>12704771
It's recorded using a GV-USB2 and some software called AmaRecTV. The full signal chain goes like this:
Nintendo 64 -> ElectronNMB -> GV-USB2 -> AmaRecTV -> ffmpeg

A few other notes:
- Videos are recorded as lossless and then re-encoded by ffmpeg. The videos are left interlaced because ffmpeg's deinterlacing isn't great for this.
- An ElectronNMB is used to split the N64's audio and video outputs. That way, the capture card can get both composite and s-video at the same time (useful for switching between them with a key press). A third output goes to a TV.
- I use AmaRecTV because it's simple to use and has the lowest latency out of all the software I tested. It's even good enough to play games through if you're not too picky, though controlling a mouse feels a bit sloppy.

What do you all think of taking the fan translated script from one version of a game and porting it to another? Obviously it's okay if you can get the original translators permission, but if they're unreachable and you can't? It feels dicey to me, but I doubt I can get someone to retranslate an entire game.
>>
>>12707902
They've published their work, anyone is free to do with it as they please. They're hypocrites if they object.
>>
>>12707909
>anyone is free to do with it as they please. They're hypocrites if they object.
Not exactly. It would be illegal. Some fan translations try to stay compliant with the law by only distributing patches. If you "steal" the (inherently, implicitly copyrighted) fan-translated script verbatim instead of writing your own translation, you aren't really doing the same thing the original translator did.
I wouldn't let that stop anyone, though. Who cares about piracy, let alone of some ancient and abandoned game. It's not like anyone can claim damages.
>>
>>12708138
In the United States, translation hacks violate copyright law regardless of if they are distributed as a patch or as a ROM.

The script of a video game is protected by copyright.
A translation of a video game script is a derivative work.
Copyright grants the copyright holder the exclusive right to prepare derivative works.
Ergo, unauthorized fan translations violate copyright law.

This is not ambiguous. The relationship between video game mods and derivative works was established in Micro Star v. FormGen Inc. It is not because they are legal that fan translations escape the ire of publishers. Publishers allow them to exist out of good will.

None of this matters anyway since my question is not a legal one. It is a question courtesy.
>>
>>12704325
>Mario is no longer forced to conform to the rigid limitations assigned to his original body, Luigi is finally given representation, and both characters can choose alternative presentations instead of being locked into one color scheme. Calling those changes “quality of life” recognizes that self-expression and bodily autonomy.

i'm not a legal scholar, but i'm pretty sure that most mods and romhacks are fair use. i think it might technically be a copyright violation to repurpose someone's translation for you own hack, but i can only imagine most translators would be happy about it.

Are there any other NESSACARY rom hacks that actually outdo the original game and fix it? I recently discovered Mario Kart advance has a rom hack fix that makes the map rotation match the fps of the sprites, like it's supposed to be, and finally makes the game enjoyable to play. In the original version, the game 'runs' at 60fps, but the track rotates at 30 fps, totally strange and made the game odd to play. Many players would find themselves cornering too late and sliding off the trick because of the delayed movement.

I take it you've never played Mario Kart Super Circuit, in the original game the map rotates (lags) at half the speed the game is actually running at, leading to a very shitty gameplay experience.

This is why the rom patch exists, which makes the map run at the same speed like it's supposed to. Glad I could help.

Thankfully a patch fixes it.
