Are scalers good?
>>
Yeah but don't pay too much for one. All you need is anything that can convert to HDMI without input lag, doesn't mangle the picture with deinterlacing, and can handle resolution switching. Additional picture options are nice but you get to audiophile territory very quick and eventually the more sensible option is to just get a better TV.
>>
>>12702512
>doesn't mangle the picture with deinterlacing
What the hell, bro? But motion adaptive deinterlacing is supposed to be good with PS2.

I dunno nigga, these are known to have some wire wired wrongly and I dunno if it's fixed in new revisions you can buy now.
https://github.com/ramapcsx2/gbs-control/issues/657

Ultimately it's just a premade version of GBS-Control, which is good. You can consider other options, like the blue one or the Pro one from RetroScaler.
>>
Never spend more than $20 on a video format converter.
>>
>>12702536
I dunno nigga, initially I got the super cheap Portta component to HDMI converter and it was fucking insufferably terrible on the original Xbox. And I do have the official component cables for it.
Terrible "fuzzy" image and buzzing in audio.

I get the appeal of feeling smart with your purchases, but sometimes it doesn't work out.

Cheap junk like that are for normies who literally don't give a shit. They just want to connect their VCR to their flatscreen.
>>

>>
>>12702487
Depends upon the scaler. People hated the Framemeister due to its added lag but it was the only HDMI solution at the time, until the OSSC gained a HDMI license which became the most loved option. People tend to dislike the cheap Chinese stuff due to poor documentation, lack of quality, and need for open airflow for spider webs, but prefer all the options PixelFX offers. Just do some research and maybe you can find at least one which can suit your needs for classic gaming.

And they'll still overheat on ya in the process.

I don't even know what's a solid option for 5th&6th console gen these days that won't break the bank to output 1080p HDMI w/o input lag. Is OSSC an actual sold hardware thing, or just documentation for DIY/someone else to fab it?

GBS-Control.

GBS-Control is both. As in, you can but premade China versions.
>>
I've owned a retrotink 5x for several years. It was very pricey but it became the center of my gaming hub due to being able to play on my large TVs with no input lag.

I enjoy the 25% scanlines as well due to them both breaking up the blocky pixels and causing them to appear sharper. Pretty much everything looks and plays great.
>>
>>12702780
Retrotink 5x is twice the price of the new Morph 2K.
But I dunno, maybe I should have gotten it?
>>
>>12702779
Doesn't look like it supports composite inputs for the consoles I don't have component/s-video adapters for.

I have been considering a Murena phone, they are quite costly but maybe if petrol and groceries prices drop for the next few months, I might be able to save for its release in October with Klarna.

>>12702775
Very nice, as they have a lot of compatible upgrades I've been hearing about like the RetroGem. The 2k sounds great for that ideal space of 1440p for those like us unable to afford 4k monitors.

>>12702778
That's why you really should avoid Chinese-made products. All the cut corners will end out costing more in the long run despite the immediate low price. If you have a DE10nano, like the one for your MiSTER, you can make it into an OSSC Pro-lite device which can do 1080p and 1440p thanks to the DExx_vd-isl project by the original OSSC creator.

Well, I wouldn't consider the Murena phone junk since I am getting tired of not being able to participate in group chats with friends, only being able to read but not send using my old phone. Even the ability to send pictures would be nice. Rent, utilities, insurance, groceries, and petrol has already been overtaken my income of late, so to get a modern-ish phone just for general usage I will have to resort to the BNPL situation.

>>12702809
Lucky. I only heard in passing about the real enthusiasts and engineers part of the PixelFX group. It seems like the exact thing you are looking for and will work best. My addiction to Newpipe does require me to switch to /e/OS given how they will discontinue support for Android, so similarly after research I found the product that suits my needs best is the aforementioned Murena phone I will have to make sacrifices for. Hopefully, your sacrifices will not be as severe to attain what will fit your life best.

Crts and scalers are offering two different experiences for you want the soft authentic look you do crts, scalers if you want a cleaner high res look.
>>
>>12702487
It's up to you to make that decision. You'll get a massive variety of answers here. Scalers only have the one advantage of upscaling games, they give you a cleaner more modern look. A crt beats it in every other category though the gap between crts and HDTVs is narrowing.

Do you like your retro games to have a cleaner remastered look? Then get a scaler. If you don't like it return it.
>>
>>12702856
>though the gap between crts and HDTVs is narrowing
It is?
>>
>>12702840
The only scalers worth a damn have built in CRT shaders. 'Upscaling' retro consoles looks horrible.
>>
>>12702926
If the upscaling is crystal clear pixels, then it's just fine.
>>
Memes, shitposting, and contrarianism aside, I love my Retrotink 5X and it's been the best purchase I've ever made. It filters out even the slightest Component noise and looks better than even something like a backwards compatible PS3.

If I had money to burn I'd get the 4K but the 5X has been an absolute joy for 1440p resolution upscaling for my PS2 games.
>>
>>12702963
Damn bro, I hope Morph 2K is good enough.
>>
>>12702781
I got it for $275 when it first launched. But being completely honest, considering the hundreds of hours and dozens of firmware updates that evolved it with great features over the years, $325 is still worth every penny and I would pay it in a heartbeat.

The only thing to give you pause is if you have a 4K bigger than 55 inches, in which you might seriously want to consider the 4K. I have a 50 inch 4K tv and it's perfect, but depending on how far you're sitting away and the size of your TV, the 4K will give you a better experience but the price is extremely stiff.
>>
>>12702967
I don't know anything about the Morph 2K and Chi's firmware updates to me are going to be hard to beat. My favorite update didn't even hit the 5X until two years after it's luanch, which enabled you to turn on a filter to identify visual noise on the scene you're seeing in game, and adjust signal gains until that visual noise is completely filtered out. I get a digital-like signal form my Component cables and it's great.

There are some HDR features on the 5X that were backported on the 4K as well, but I typically don't like messing with those as it can mess with the original vision of the game.
>>
>>12702487
What do these scalers do? Basically make it look like an emulator with visible pixel edges instead of blurry?
>>
>>12703007
Depends on settings. The more expensive one you get, the more settings are available.

For me, I want to use one with PS2.
PS2 outputs 480i, so I want a scaler with deinterlacing, ideally motion adaptive deinterlacing.
>>

the thread I made is probably dead but the reason i think things like the Retrotink are great because it allows you to have authentic composite and s-video and RGB feeds display on any normal TV.

pic related, you can go for something that looks like it's emulation due to being so sharp or something that accurate delivers NTSC composite artifacting and effects. or you can choose the middleground of s-video and get sharp pixels without looking too raw due to the natural softness it.
>>

>>12703467
and, of course, playing on real hardware means you don't get any emulation inaccuracy and the only input lag is from your monitor.

The only "shader" it has is scanline reproduction which has multiple settings and looks great at Polyphase 25% on nearly everything, as it sharpens the overall image while breaking up the blocky pixels.
>>
>>12702487
The problem is you can just barely get a "decent" picture with an expensive scaler or you can emulate and get a perfect picture with more display options.
>>
>>12703472
Miring the proper rainbow banding but man the picture quality is bad. I hope it looks better in non-jpg form but I doubt it's by much.
>>
>>12703472

>>
>>12703490
It looks good in motion with scanlines but it's still an unclear picture overall.
>>
>>12703495
I think because they are white and grey, not just white. It gets pretty disgusting on some games where the text has a gradient to it, just a bunch of rainbow artifacts on the sides of each letter.
>>
>>12703495
>>12703504
Also note how Sonic looks in the life counter with an orange eye.
>>
>>12703486
for 2d content you basically do get near emulator quality results, which is fun since its running on a 20-30 year old consumer toy that draws way less power than your pc.
For 3d games most people can't really accept 480p let alone 240p.
>>
>>12703467
>>12703472
Is left mean to look good? And intended?
>>
>>12703486
But then you have to deal with imperfect emulation
>>
>>12704442
Good? no
Authentic? yes

many Genesis games deliberately used dithering and messy video signals to create transparency effects, which just become lines of pixels or a checkerboard pattern otherwise.
Earthworm Jim appears to even be using the rainbow artifacts to make the glass and water discolor the light as it shines through and reflects off it. These types of touches make it obvious to me when a Genesis dev team was expecting their graphics to be seen using the terrible composite signal.
>>
>>12705109
To add, though...

Not every dither pattern you see on a Genesis will turn into transparency or some other effect. Check a game like Toy Story or Stimpy's Invention, where the dithering is either still visible on composite or giving brick walls heavy rainbow bands unintentionally.

It's not a definitive yes or no as to if the video signal is authentic or intended, it's a game-by-game thing.
>>
I recently got a 480p EDTV. I've read the best way to play is connecting directly to the DVI port, but something like a cheap composite/component to VGA/DVI adapter won't work? Should I get a scaler for this?
>>
>>12705218
You would want a scaler for a 480P display, the RetroScaler 2X or some other linedoubler will do the trick. Though if it has native composite / component / etc inputs they are worth trying. Some older LCDs actually handle 240p well (not many but worth trying)
>>
>>12705235
I got it mostly for 480p, for 240p I have a CRT.
Can I just directly connect component cables to get a crispy image? So far I only tried the Dreamcast, but that does output VGA natively.
>>
>>12702487
Is this what people use to capture footage with scanlines?
>>
I got a 20 dollar upscaler for my ps2 that worked pretty good like it was a great investment and had a hookup for component cables.
Then I decided to upgrade to a retrotink 5k which it was an improvement but not 300 dollars worth of an Improvement. Like we went from extremely blurry can't read text on a modern display with straight composite cables to actually extremely nice looking and acceptable with component and 20 dollar upscaler 200x improvement but to the experience to a barely noticeable further improvement with the retrotink like another 10-20%
Having shaders is nice though
>>
>>12705419
And that retrotink improvement was prob the interlacer shit in the retro rink idk enough about the nitty gritty. I'm not a tech wiz and just like the ps2 library so as average joe as it comes to this stuff. In my perspective I think it's good enough that I don't really need a crt even if I would want one, they are just too heavy and require too big of a tv stand for a nice big one which wouldn't work in my apartment compared to a modern big 55 inch flat screen
That 20 dollar upscaler that worked perfectly fine was the porta
>>
>>12705109

If you're going to buy a pre-made GBS-C you might as well just buy a OSSC or retrotink.

The whole point of GBS-C was you could buy the 20 dollar board and some other parts and have a scaler after soldering a few wires up.

All those pre-made ones cost like 100+, might as well buy a scaler that is still being updated regularly and are just better at this point.
>>
>>12709676
Just keep in mind I think OSSC (not sure about the pro) can't do PS2 interlaced shit very well or something, and GBS-C can downscale stuff.

>>12702779
>>12702785
There is no "official" version

GBS-Control STARTED OUT as DIY-only device until random Chinese Aliexpress shops realized they could make a quick buck by cranking out shoddy versions of it. Now most people think it's a consumer device and don't even realize you can make your own, they don't even make them according to what the instructions say to do. You're supposed to REMOVE the RGB pots and hard-wire them, that's the first, most basic, and most important step. Yet every one I see such as the one pictured in >>12702519 has knobs for the RGB pots on it. The whole point was that it was supposed to be a cheap way to upgrade a cheap $30 but crappy upscaler meant just to convert arcade cabinets from CRT to LCD for repairs into something that can be on-par with an OSSC for a few dollars of components, it was never meant to be a hundred-dollar product that directly competes with it, especially not at the same pricepoint.

>>12702783
Garbage-in, Garbage-out. You really want to have at least some sort of RGB signal coming into your upscaler instead of composite. Vast majority of consoles had some sort of native RGB output without any mods needed, NES and N64 being the big exceptions (And most N64 models need a cheap and easy mod to do it). Most others just simply need a cable.

File: That Waterfall Again.jpg (577 KB, 1920x1080)

>>12702790
The point of upscaling them to 4K isn't to make them look better, obviously we are dealing with consoles that had resolutions on average of around 320 × 240, you aren't going to make those pixels look like modern HD sprites just by blowing them up to 4K. The point is that most console resolutions integer upscale well at 4K while 4K has enough resolution to more accurately replicate CRT filters than 1080p and especially 720p can.

>>12702801
As much as I would love to use a CRT again, even without the price, the size and weight is also an annoyance, and they are only going to have more and more of them die or start to look terrible from age, at this point I think it's better to try to get retro consoles to look good on modern sets than try to cling to CRTs. Wish there was a decent solution to use the original lightguns though.

The GBS-C pro and mini generally are the "top of the line" prebuilt GBS-C options. They add some quality of life features that the original GBS-C lacks.

As to choosing a GBS-C over an OSSC, it really comes down to what kind of content you're going to be using. The OSSC is better for progressive scan content, while the GBS-C is better for interlaced content.

I would disregard those other anons saying they're "not built correctly" as they seem to think these prebuilts are just gbs-8200's bought in bulk and slapped into a plastic shell which is not the case. They share a lot of the same chips in order to support the software, but the boards are original designs. For the price, they're perfectly fine.

"Best" is not only subjective but at $100 USD your options are a bit limited. If you're just getting your feet wet and you only plan on gaming on up to 5th gen consoles with maybe PS2 and GC as a bonus, start with the Retroscaler 2X from Aliexpress. Its a Retrotink 2X clone, meaning it only takes 240p and 480i sources to output them to a resolution of 720 x 480 (bare minimum res for HD TVs), but for older consoles its perfectly fine thanks to basically being a cheap, no lag line doubler. Ideally S-video should be your bare minimum but for component cables its fine, but don't expect 480p/720p outputs from it.
The GBS Control is where you'll want to go if you want a roughly $100 USD upscaler for 6th gen consoles. Can output up to 1080p in a 4:3 aspect ratio and has motion adaptive deinterlacing for 480i content, meaning that you won't get interlacing like you usually get from that content. Annoyingly has a green tint to the image but its fine for what you're paying for.

GBS-C alone?
Or do you need more than 1080p?
>>
>>12714992
how good is it for the psp ?

Dunno. Sounds like different PSP models have different outputs.

>The 3000 outputs to the “red yellow white” ports shown (composite) as well as component. The 2000 only outputs to component (red green blue, red again(audio), white)
GBS-C takes component in basic spec. One specific model called GBS-C Pro (by RetroScaler) also takes composite.

Both Morph 4K and RT4K CE (or Pro) are endgame solutions that take everything (Morph 4K might need an addon card for composite) and you dont need anything else before or after them.

Basically for PS2 up to 1080p, GBS-C is good enough and it has motion adaptive deinterlacing. PSP I dunno much, you need to look it up like I tried above.

All this said, the more expensive thing you buy, the better will the deinterlacing for PS2 be. Even if its the same "motion adaptive deinterlacing". More expensive scalers do it better.

The XRGB mini is well under $300 now and still has a pretty reasonable motion adaptive deinterlacer imo

No I think you simply make retarded financial mistakes. Whats your DTI? 70%?

I mostly play PS2, and I prefer it through an upscaler with motion adaptive deinterlacing. Even on a CRT, especially a large one like the 36" I use, you can see combing artifacts in motion.
Motion adaptive deinterlacing, especially when combined with a good CRT filter and HDR, makes for the best native PS2 image I've ever seen.
I used a GBS-C for a while, and that was fine. Splurged for the RT4K recently, though, and it is a serious upgrade. Probably not worth the money for most people especially if it's just for PS2, but it gives a great output.

Not that perfect, but no upscaler is really ideal for PSP from my experience desu. It has a weird resolution of 30:17 or something? Not quite 16:9 and not 4:3 either, and there's only so much you can do to make it look nice especially with cheap component cables. This was a screenshot I took from 2021 with GBS-C IIRC, and Silent Hill Origins on PSP didn't look terribly great.

Here's another screencap. From what I remember the GBS-C needs to be in 720p mode to output PSP a widescreen aspect ratio. More than anything the main problem I had is just that it wasn't terribly comfortable to game on a PSP 2000 with a cable sticking out of it and its very low analog nub. You may be better off just sticking to recording PSP games with PPSSPP at higher resolutions.

I really enjoy my Retrotrink 4K Pro. Not worth the price unless you're an autist. But the firmware updates are unmatched, major new features all the time.

4K CE is worth the $500 price for autists. 4K Pro at $700 only for giga autists. 5X is a great product for most retro autists but the PixelFX scalers are similar and cheaper. Retrotrink has the best community of dedicated autists making filters, however.

How much will the retrotink 8k cost?

anybody can take screencaps of this one how they fare capturing video?

It was just an image I found of Sonic's waterfall on a Retrotink 4K, it's a lot more than just scanlines, scanlines alone would not replicate the effects to make the waterfall transparent.

Again, garbage in garbage out. It's a night-and-day difference between composite and RGB. You want to ideally get the best quality signal out of the console if you are going to feed it into an upscaler. While HDMI would technically be better that requires expensive mods and the difference between RGB and HDMI for hardware that old is utterly negligible if your end goal is to put it into an upscaler. Not like most of the time RGB would require anything more than a cheap cable, the majority of consoles could at the very least natively output RGB and even had those pins wired up in their video port, something like a SCART cable that has the RGB pins wired would be enough.

The main exceptions are the NES and N64, the N64 (at least earlier models) just requires a cheap amplifier board, since the system already has RGB traces that feed into a converter to convert the signal to Composite, some people would just directly tap into these traces but it's not recommended as they are intended just for internal processing and run at very low current, trying to plug that directly into a TV or upscaler can result in a very dark image and can damage the system. That's why modding them to output RGB is cheap, the mod is just a simple and cheap amplifier that takes these RGB signals and amplifies them so they can be output to a screen just fine.

NES honestly, I would not recommend. The problem is that it's video output is hardwired into the PPU, there is nowhere outside of the PPU where a raw signal is being processed before it is converted into Composite, so any RGB is essentially replacing some parts of the PPU with it's own emulated version (Or even both the PPU and CPU for HDMI mods) so it can output it as RGB/HDMI, and it's not as accurate as the original PPU hardware.

>Dunno. Sounds like different PSP models have different outputs.

PSP 1000 - Did not support video output at all

PSP 2000 - Supported video output over component only

PSP 3000 - Supported video output over component or composite

Obviously component would be better, but back in the PSP era not having composite was a big issue as most only had TVs with component inputs. The image regardless of which you use will also be a small rectangular area in the middle of an image with massive black borders, if you have CFW there were plugins to resize the image to around the full size of your TV, but they could add slowdown. Though if you are using an upscaler it likely will have options to zoom into the image to make it full-screen.

I don't know about the PSO Go, I think it had video or even HDMI output if you plugged it into the dock and used a PS3 controller with it?

The psp go doesn't have hdmi out. It can only do ypbpr. It's output is a bit sharper yet blurrier than the psp 3000. I tested this on my rt4k
>>
>>12717845
Ah, so the Go was component as well, I see.

What do you mean though that it's both sharper yet blurrier?
>>
>>12702801
Without the CRT there is no reason to own a retro console. Dump them all into landfill and switch to emulator.
>>
>>12717895
I can't put to words. When sampling it on my 4k I can't set the phase perfectly since there's always a weird blur or form of aa. The 3000 is just really sharp and samples easily.
>>
>>12714175
i know full well about that and that's why I mentioned the mini and the pro instead of the mcbazel, im disregarding you because you seem to think the RGB pots on the mcbazel "shouldn't be there" when you don't even know why you're supposed to remove them on the original GBS-8200 or that the mcbazel's pots reduce gain instead of boosting it, therefore while unnecessary there's no risk in having them

bumpin to ask a question, i kinda dont like how the wii composite cables look, i kinda miss the look of the SNES cables, Wii ones just look too clean and a tad bit too blurry.

Top - SNES SGB
Bottom - Wii

Any video or capture will deceive you
They all look horrible in person. Doesn't matter which one.
Maybe the 4k retrotink can do the miracle, but I still doubt
>>
>>12718507
that really doesnt help much.
