I’ve seen both emutrannies and newgen toddlers fetishizing this look but in reality scanlines are not visible on whatever type of CRT is used unless you sit really close, and even then it’s mostly a result of the TV being photographed.
I have never ever in my life seen scanlines on a CRT unless I pixelpeep, this simulacrum of people seeing CRTs online first instead of in person is really damaging a whole generation of emutrannies flooding this board
>>
>brags about owning a shitty CRT
lol?
>>
>>12703509
It's what morons were told was the most important thing is in the presentation of old games. yeah, it's important to a lot of people but if you can't with your own words describe why it is to you then maybe it doesn't really matter as much as you're trying to believe it does. Like how people just as blanket belief say that vinyl sounds better than other audio formats but can't even explain how it sounds different.
>>
>>12703509
I couldn't imagine caring this much about the details of screens. Either play on a CRT or a modern display and just play the damn games. Degause it if the screen looks wobbly. Adjust the color, contrast and brightness. You're done.
>>
>>12703513
even shitty CRTs mog the fuck out of non-OLED displays
>>
On this episode of "revisionist history," anon seriously tries to argue that you can't see scanlines and they are an illusion people thought they saw this whole time.

Next week, we'll be back to claiming that the N64 failed.
>>
The starkness of scanlines depends on TVL. This is a concept 99,999% of retrofags don't know about, not even most CRTfags.
>>
>>12703509
You only see scanlines in screenshots, you wont see that on a real crt or even shaders nowadays because even at 60hz refresh rate they are unnoticeable, but then the general iq of the world went to brazollian levels of -83 shit even without lead poisoning.
>>
>>12703554
If you're talking about 240p gaming (the vast majority of older consoles) then you're absolutely wrong.
The scanlines stay in a consistent place unless it is an interlaced image. Every other horizontal line is a solid black scanline in 240p that does not change positions.

You type so angrily for someone who has no idea what they are talking about!
>>
>>12703509
It’s zoomers and alphas who didn’t grow up with CRTs not understanding what the real appeal is so they’re assuming the flaws are the appeal.
>>
>>12703560
You dont even need that shit
>>
Never been to an arcade?
>>
>>12703509
People are morons, specially those obsessed with "authenticity", ironically.
>>
>>12703509
They're easier to see on bigger crts. If you have a small one they can be almost impossible to see.
>>
>leddit screenshot thread

>>
>>12703509
Same retards who grew up thinking 8:7 is correct
>>
>>12703509
another retarded bait thread by this faggot, fuck off you stupid nigger and go choke and die.
>>
>>12703509
You probably weren't there but depending on the tv, make and content. The lines were quite obvious. I still have my 32 inch d series jvc and a 24 inch trinitron. Both have these "scanlines", but handle it differently.
>>
>>12704254
This.
The most important part for me is having a high enough resolution monitor that I can get the internal resolution/aspect to stretch to the same one it would be on a CRT while remaining perfectly sharp and not requiring any sort of filter to blur away the difference.
4k has enough room to let you do this with tons of common retro resolutions, especially if you crop overscan to reduce the number of times the "base" resolution needs to multiply in each direction.
>>
>>12703885
It's been this bad since we allowed 6th gen. It's just /v/ now
>>
>>12704279
I'll accept this.
>>
>>12703509
this shit still obfuscates pixels intensely so im not sure what his issue is
>>
>>12703509
People always idolize the most superficial and most visible aspects of retro games. It's the same reason everyone was so gay for pixel art instead of the talent and effort that went into making the pixel art look good. pixel art is retro and retro is good. It misses the point that these aspects of things were as much limitations and if we have gotten around them we would have.
>>
>>12703509
>are not visible on whatever type of CRT is used unless you sit really close
Utter nonsense. Lurk more and don't create another thread for at least 3 years.
>>
CRT is just bilinear filtering but more expensive.

Change my mind
>>
>>12703523
Not by size, Hz, resolution and durability (CRTs burn in).
>>
>>12704418
It's more of a gaussian blur.
>>
>>12704558
And yet they're STILL better.
>>
>>12703885
Does the screenshot contain misinformation?
>>
>>12703509
>What’s up with the scanline fetishism?
What's up with your mental illness?

Serious question. What's actually wrong with you? Bad childhood? Friendless? Bullied?

Why is it impossible to enjoy an aesthetic without it being """ fetishism """? Why would you even be stupid enough to use that word? What put it in your head? Do you even think about the things that come out of your mouth, or are you just a bitterly unhappy robot?
>>
>>12704579
In what way? Defining your personality? Quite sad anon.
>>
>>12704558
>hz
50hz CRTs look like 120hz flat panels and feel even better in action.
>resolution
The point of CRTs is using it for old media, no one is using it for modern 4K movies and games unless you have a PVM
>durability (CRTs burn in).
you are more likely to get burn in on a shitty panel even an LCD/LED one than a premium OLED/Sony Trinitron one
>Not by size
Just sit closer.

quintuple digits OLEDs are great for modern stuff but im not sure why you'd pick them out over CRT's actual advantages in the retro space
>>
>>12704912
lmao at you having a melty for being called out as a hipster

us uncs grew up with CRT's and the scanlines aren't visible unless you put your face up to the screen which no one did
>>
>>12704914
Better for playing retro games on anon.
>>

NPCs. The vast majority of "people" in this world have no sentience or subjective experience. Basically nothing more than primitive LLMs. To then "scanlines" are just a token in their language model and nothing more.
>>

I always find it insane that the zoomer faggots looking for authenticity don't recognise it when they see. The only time I remember seeing scanlines was as at SOME arcades.

scanlines?
>>
>>12708087
>>
>>12703509
Some people might just like the novelty of it. And I think some of it has to do with people showing side by side comparisons of zoomed in heavily pixelated images next to ones with shaders and scanlines with the latter looking a little better. But when actually playing the game it doesn't make that much of a difference. Scanlines just seem like visual noise reducing image clarity to me, and it only makes things look "better" in the same way that blur filters do.

>a shitty CRT
It's what most kids had and was therefore the target display quality. Everyone would have preferred the clean, crisp look emulators and computer monitors had, the scanline bullshit is just historic revisionism by clueless retards who started infesting retro gaming in the early 2000.
>>
>>12709059
That is one dogshit composite connection.

>>12709074
Gee, wonder why they didn't take the photo for their magazine with 6 feet of distance between him and the screen. The controller cable is a hint as to what distance you should be sitting comfortably at.
>>
I always hated scanlines since I was a kid. Good CRT TVs didn’t show scanlines. This is why I preferred small TVs.
Hell, I was happy about flatscreens because they didn’t have scanlines.
CRTs are still objectively superior, but anyone who “prefers” scanlines for an “authentic” look is an NPC retard.
And no, you moron, it was added in emulators to reduce the pixelation, not to emulate what CRTs look like in real life.
Run an emulator on a CRT and use a CRT shader, you’ll see it.
>>
>>12703509
The only troon is you.
>>
>>12704418
Composite color blur is an essential part of the experience as well. CRTs also glow real nice and bright. They look really vibrant in person if you've calibrated them right.

RetroRGB podcast and reddit brainrotted a lot of people with pvmeme and lying over arcade screens signals, when composite or even s-video were expensive.

Old avgn stuff as >>12709074 >>12709074 >>12709584 are the most accurate descriptions of retrogaming til 2005 at its finest before lcd tvs began to roll out cheaper than CRT and Plasma.

>>
>>12712406
You just keep on gaslighting people with this bullshit
>because I was a five year old in 1999 stuck shitting my diapers, means nobody knew of these things, nobody had a disposable income whatsoever, and it was secret knowledge guarded by the highest tier masonic lodge
>>
>>12711617
No one can be this retarded.
>>
>>12712986

I remember getting right up and doing this in donkey kong country 2, somehow even the static added to the 3d sensation, it just didn't feel like a raster at all, it felt like infinite resolution, with the tv just as a window, and the scanlines just as a kind of slit dressing in between yourself and what you were gazing into. zoomers with this tablet shit will never know what it was like for the game to render to actually be 'real' in that sense, everything today is just plastic and aritifical

Well thank god i had a legit SHARP with RF support to play my father's atari before the damn thing had a chernobyl fuse melting after a blackout in 1994 when i was 3.
Needless to say, my retarded older sister who was responsible for that, nowadays hates that she got rid of the entire package which included some rare carts in it after we moved to the new house, because she saw the prices of the atari carts and sticks during the retro fever a few years ago, while the fucking barbie she bought with the money back then, is here in pieces after she broke her when she broke with her second bf in 2000 kek.

I’m not sure whether /vr/ is mostly made up of zoomer larpers or people from dysfunctional single parent households
My family was by no means rich we were lowermiddle class, and both of my parents worked. By the mid 1990s, I had a low end 20" Thomson TV in my bedroom. Around 1998–1999, my parents upgraded the living room television, so their older upper mid range 28" Philips was handed down to me, while the Thomson went to my younger sibling.
That kind of arrangement was common among almost everyone I knew. Yet, according to /vr/, apparently everyone was stuck using some awful 14 inch television until they finally upgraded to an LCD in 2007-2009.
>>
>>12713190
I had a 14" TV until 2009 when I bought a LCD for my PS3. I didnt feel I needed more but my room was also not that big and I had a PC in my room since mid 90s
>>
>>12713190
Also the concept of parents throwing a lot of money on the main living room seems foreign to /vr/ too.
>>
>>12713190
I still have a good memory of the crt's we got since i was born.
Besides the mentioned sharp which was a 17' screen we had a minitv which the name escapes by and looked like shadow warrior's rocket launcher, later we bought one of the new LG Goldstar 29' screens that came with magic eye in 1999, which lasted til my parents and i replaced it with a new Samsung lcd circa 2010 or so, we also had one of the lg flattron tv's that came with hacked NES games in it like dig dug and so on which my mother gave to my and she sold it to buy a ninja blender.

We almost bought a plasma in 2006, but it was too big for our living room, so the money was funneled into my pc, and i got a gpu + crysis from it which i didnt regret.
>>
>>12703509
in my experience, post-processing scanline effects alleviate aliasing and bland textures in modern displays. the old games look better with them.

Neither kids in Japan, where the console originated from, nor much of the rest of the world, had a life as cushy as you, so sit down and be quiet. The developers knew what they were making games for, designed specifically for it, and there is plenty of proof.

i hate having to share a board with you faggots who have zero clue what are you talking about. i have done a side-by-side comparison of games on a trinitron vs. a modern tv and the crt blew it out of the fucking water. try doing this with the observatory in majora’s mask, it’s night and day and even the normies i displayed this to agree (everyone who asks about my old tv will receive the same demonstration). but hey MAYBE OLED’s are better, i wouldn’t know, i don’t have the means to compare them so i can not make an INFORMED OPINION.
