I enjoy this trope, though it's a difficult one to fuck up, really. What are (you)r favorites? Any variation of the basic idea is relevant (alternate worlds, time travel, pre/post-apocalypse etc)
>>12704887Chrono Cross.Mainly because I'm able to have parallel versions of party members interact with their other selves and get rewarded for it.And letting the the parallel versions of party members who have already died in one world meet their surviving loved ones in the other world
>>12704887never viewed the 2 maps together like this. the world layout changes far less than i would have guessed. it ends up feeling so much different geographically. im struggling to even think of other examples of this concept besides the inverted castle in sotn.
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver did it in a cool way
>>12704887The water switches in wario land. Why dont more gb games do this.
Don't know if the merged world of FFV counts but I could never make heads or tails of it and I hated it.
>>12704887I doubt the reverse castle from SotN is anybody's "favorite" but at the time I thought it was a nice, creative surprise.
>>12705340oh yeah that was awesome
It's legitimately one of the best design decisions you could make with your game. It's efficient, but also always sick. Hitting that halfway point in the game and suddenly everything is much harder and the world is slightly off? *chefs kiss*
>>12705448For me it was the way they did it in Harmony, it comes as a twist that you've been actually traversing two castles and it blew my mind the first time.
>>12705189Here's a full scale version; it is pretty weird how little of the terrain is actually shifted and tweaked except for the big dungeon areas.
>>12705189Yeah, geographically, it's basically the same, but the slight variation in placement of obstacles help make it feel like a whole other world.
>>12705340The night/day level variations in Wario Land 3 are nice too; sometimes the level feels (and works) totally different even though the changes are actually minimal
>>12705465Goddammit, I just had a terrible thought. They're probably going to make a sequel to TotK with a minimally changed Dark World variation of the surface/sky/underground. I think they're going to milk that shit as long as they can.
>>12705515aonuma literally confirmed that they wont be doing a 3rd game with that map or cast of characters. he said that while future games will be similar with the open world concept, it will feature entirely new environments and characters and such.
>>12705523Aonuma's a fucking bitch. I don't trust him as far as I can throw a Skyward Sword disc straight into the trash.
Land of Illusion for the SMS: doing inverted castles (>>12705448) and water level switches (>>12705340) before they were cool
>>12705515The Depths are supposed to be the "Dark World" of that game already, anon, complete with inverted terrain. Kinda boring-ass idea once you get past the initial shock of how hostile and bleak it is though. Anyway, since we're on non-retro territory: I like how A Link Between Two Worlds subverted some of ideas of the original Dark World from ALttP >>12705465, like making Death Mountain the icy part of the world. I wasn't a fan of the choice of dividing it into standalone areas though.
>>12705465Wow, I never noticed how the rib-tunnels in Skull Woods are in identical positions to the log tunnels in the Lost Woods, or how the hedge-maze in the Dark World tends to line up with the cliff-edges in the Light World. Neat.
>>12705546>The Depths are supposed to be the "Dark World"Oh, I see. I didn't actually play TotK. Dude broke into my house and flushed all my Switch games, and I haven't had the heart to start my collection again. Thank God I keep my retro games slightly more hidden.
>>12704887Might be the wrong era for you, but I still remember the real-time shifting world mechanics of Soul Reaver absolutely destroying my 12 year old brain back in the day.
>>12705465and just like that i miss graalonline
>>12705578>Dude broke into my house and flushed all my Switch gamesI hope you don't mean that literally.
>>12705465Chad Lorule Vs virgin hyrule
>>12708173I wish I didn't. I mean, I assume he flushed them, anyway. The cases were all in the bathroom sink and the cartridges were gone. Made my bed and did my fucking laundry, too, right hand to God. Craziest fucking event in my last decade.
>>12708196Sounds like Florida-Man paid you a visit.
