Halo completely revolutionized FPS, and it was a console shooter. You can't name anything else on the PC that used similar lighting effects (such as the flashlight) before Halo in 2001. I doubt you'll find one. It's so funny that Halo was used to advertise the NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS and then that graphics card literally couldn't run Halo. Most GPUs were intentionally gimped out of Shader Model 2.0 and couldn't play Halo PC with specular highlights and bumpmapping. Gearbox had to potato-ify or remove many of the graphical effects when they ported the game to PC. Gearbox needed to write a fixed function renderer to support older 3D cards. Shaders had to be toned down for DX8 back then, the PC DirectX lacked a ton of calls present on the Og Xbox's DirectX.
>>12706242Why are so many threads on this stupid board about hardwarefaggotry?
>>12706252npcs with no purpose need wars to fight
>>12706242It has some nifty graphical gimmicks but none of that amounts to revolutionizing the genre.
>>12706242Idk, looks like Quake 3 but with bump mapping and worse textures
>>12706242So the current argument for Halo is that... it had better graphics than PC games in 2001? Ok... I don't know, but sure, you can have that one I guess. It's still a boring as fuck mediocre FPS by PC standards.
Everyone who had a PC at the time laughed at Microsoft and Xbox. It's nothing special except for kids like OP.
>>12706242>halo thread>surely this wont be from the one psychopath that talks about Xbox and PC specs and didnt make 10000000 threads before this one including one on /v/ yesterday.

Love me some Halo. Bert retro shooter to me.
>>12706242>completely revolutionized FPS>console
>>12706242I don't think that's how it works irl, if you are behind a tree you won't see the sun but the light level around you doesn't change; that looks like it suddenly becomes evening if you go behind the tree and then when you step out of the tree shadow it again becomes morning time
26 years later, still the standard and the peak of the FPS genre.
>>12707223Imagine the fun
>>12706242All true but the game itself has aged like dog shit. It's no Doom that's for sure.
>>12706242>when the sun is out of YOUR view, everything that was lit by the sun becomes darkerThis is actually very realistic: if this happens to you irl, this is how you know you're the protagonist of the real world. Which is why it doesn't seem realistic to NPCs such as yourselves.
>>12706242Halo never had to be as slow as it was. Even on consoles we have plenty of examples of faster pace shooters that do not force a 2 weapon limit.
>>12707227It's aged amazingly well for me. I often go back to Halo 1 and just play a level or two whenever I don't have anything else to do.What about the game do you think aged poorly?
Don't care. I'm still not playing it.That shit is slower than watching grass grow.
>>12707264I like that it's slow. Going fast is fun but sometimes a slower experience is good too. In fact I wouldn't even say the game is slow really, the environments you go through are the perfect size for your movement speed.Bigger levels give you vehicles, I don't get why anyone would think this is a problem.
>>12707290Except even in the lore the spartans supposedly go pretty fast. This is not translated properly in the games. He didn't need to go as fast as Doomguy but even your average Call of Duty marine goes faster than Master Chief in the Bungie era games.
>>12707325The lore should not affect gameplay. Also you haul some serious ass in that game, it just doesn't seem like it because everything is fucking HUGE. The basic ass Covenant crate that's all over the place is at least 8 feet tall, yet it seems a lot smaller because of how the FOV displays it.
The PC version was honestly better, flamethrower and FRG were sick, and multiplayer even had fucking Banshees. Shader autism doesn't equate to fun gameplay.
>>12706242I don't care about all that. I just got done playing some of the halo 2 campaign because I just never got around to it. I played for 2 hours which doesn't sound a lot but I rarely do that anymore.
>>12707325>the lore
lmao no- counter strike did that
Can't I like Halo, Counter Strike, Quake. And Half Life?
>>12706242Mario or something. It doesn’t matter.
>>12707638No. What are you, a fucking terrorist or something?
>>12706242Looks worse than Serious Sam, sorry.
>>12707638The Big Four
>>12707638That's illegal in 178 countries, bro
>>12707638You can, but my niece will call you a slut.
Graphically it was definitely more impressive than anything on PC for a few years. Then 2004 happened. You had Far Cry, Half Life 2 and Doom 3 all drop in the same year, and the Xbox answer was....Halo 2. A graphical wet fart of a game that anyone who wasn't a delusional fanboy recognized as a downgrade from the first game.
>>12706703yet they all used windows. If they actually meant what they said and stood their ground, they would use linux in 2001
>>12709042Hey Paul me and the guys are playing BTB tonight on xbox live do you want to join?>No what are you fucking gaY? Halo 2 is a big wet fart graphically and if you play that shit you are a delusional fanboy toddler. Ill be playing Halo 1 alone in my room.Sorry I bothered you, definitely wont happen again
>>12706242Are you seriously advocating for those shitty Geforce 3/4-only Xbox-to-PC ports of the early 2000's?Nvidia themselves dropped support for those card-specific features in newer cards before the original Xbox was even dead! And to this day we have to suffer from it with shit like Splinter Cell 1 where 20+ years later the shadows are still busted on any GPU that isn't an Nvidia card released between 2001 and 2003.
>>12706242I played halo for 5 minutes back in the 2000s and realised you can't zoom in and aim through the sights. I concluded the game was for fucking children and I've never played any halo game ever since the.
>>12709993>I played halo for 5 minutes back in the 2000scurious how your aim down sights complaint is something only cod zoomers care about. must be a coincidence.
>>12709042The first mission of medal of honor frontline is more impressive overall than Halo. Halo only has pretty particle lighting effects.
>>12709997Quake and UT were for children as well, supposedly.
>>12709921Online multiplayer is for low IQ subhumans
>>12709993Iron sights ruined shooters. Fuck that noise.
>>12707638No. If you don't hate popular thing you are a fake gamer.
>>12709921That was 20 years ago. This is a retro board jack. All your friends are dead and your Xbox doesn't work anymore. None of that matters. What matters is Halo 2 looks like fucking dogshit and was a terrible sequel. Nostolgia with the boyz won't change that.
>>12706242Halo was revolutionary, but picking flashlight as your example is such a shit take.
>>12709042Holy retard. Those three games are on Xbox, AND Halo 2 is an upgrade in every single fucking way from Halo 1.
>>12713753I adore Halo 2's campaign but the graphics were way worse than CE.
>>12713753halo 2 looks too cartoony with the vibrant color palettehalo ce is peak aesthetics
>>12707223Imagine the smell
>>12707638No, you need to dedicate your entire personality around a game you played when you were 12, or you're a poser and a no-games faggot.
>>12713815On opposite day.
>>12713831Really? I'd say the exact opposite. Halo CE was way more vibrant and colorful. 2 is a lot darker and duller.
>>12706703No we didn't. I fucking loved the PC port it was my favorite fps and the reason I bought an Xbox, my friends did the same and we could play cool ass games that weren't on PC without dealing with gay ass toddler games and weebfaggotry.
>>12706242The Gearbox port of Halo was widely criticized for being garbage, shader model aside it also ran garbage on high end hardware at the time. Keep in mind it came out in late 2003 and had performance issues even on high end Radeon 9700 or Geforce FX cards. It was also missing a bunch of visual effects, from the top of my head the Jackal shields were single color only? I forgot the details, it has been 20+ years.I remember playing it with a gf4mx, it played but it was missing details like Master Chiefs visor was all black. With my Radeon 9600, I think, it played fine an looked really damn nice. If you put it on ultra, then it looked the same but performance tanked. Performance also tanked on any scene that too many splatter effects on the ground, the one I remember is the corridors on Truth and Reconciliation being laggy. Odd that it was that thing specifically that held it up.Once I played it with my x1950pro it ran buttery smooth, and so did the Halo 2 port (which was made Vista exclusive to push the OS, there was an XP patch but it crashed halfway through).
>>12713851They're just saying whatever they think feels right, it's why they carry being wrong through every aspect of their life.
>>12707325>This is not translated properly in the games. He runs faster than marines despite being in full armour, and he can flip a Warthog or even the Scorpio tank with one hand only.
>>12713874I honestly played Halo on both Xbox and PC and never noticed anything different. I liked that it had a flamethrower and online multiplayer though, certainly noticed that.
>>12709936>Nvidia themselves dropped supportNvidia does that all the fucking time, the RTX 5000 series removed 32-bit PhysX which killed performance in a ton of old game (Borderlands 2 was one of them, from the top of my head).
>>12713753Halo 2 had a crappier campaign due to the Arbiter garbage and basically missing the second half of it, and the normal mapped graphics were atrociously bad.It also used Havok ragdoll effects which looked just so fucking dumb.
>>12713874The Gearbox port was the first time I started caring about graphics. Even as a little kid I noticed the PC port looked like trash compared to the Xbox version.
>>12713897>Halo 2 had a crappier campaignstopped readingyou fags just need to stop kidding yourselves
>>12713897Arbiter missions were my faves. Sacred Icon was pure kino.
>>12706703>just makes up history, just like his gender.
>>12706242Haven't played since Reach. Got into boomer shooters recently. Can't believe I used to play anything else.
>>12713897Arbiter as a concept and story execution is really really well done and I adore his addition and cutscenes. He naturally expands the world showing the covenant side and makes the great schism seem like a bigger event then if chief goes "huh are they having some kind of civil war?" Which is 100% how a modern game would have done it.HoweverHe does get stuck with all of the flood missions and flood just isn't as fun to shoot at Final mission is peak tho
>>12713907he's right doe. no one wanted to play as the covenant. no one wanted to go back to a 2nd halo. and the story ended in the exact same way it began. 1's campaign mogs 2's (and 3's)
>>12706242>ranger X megadrive, half life PC, unreal tournament, white day a labyrinth named school, i coukd go on but you get the drill.
>>12713859Based>>12713874>Keep in mind it came out in late 2003Which was a year before Halo 2 came out, and the only way to play Halo 1 online (and didn't require XBL.)>Bitching about graphic shitToo bad didn't care was too busy enjoying being able to play with other people between LAN parties. Oh, and with M+K.>>12713885If you compare screenshots, there were multiple effects turned down or missing. The other anon is also correct that performance wasn't amazing, but considering the Xbox version was still locked to 30 fps, it wasn't a big deal outsides of occasional bottlenecks depending on your system. Ran as well as anything else on my shit computer so never bothered me either, but I'm sure people who needed everything on ultra got filtered by gearbox being shit at optimization.>>12714703His campaign parts were fine, especially from an alternate perspective and all, but garbage on replays. When most of the shitty gameplay gets relegated to a single character's campaign, it kinda consolidates negativity. The good parts just become exceptions at that point.
>>12706252This board has always attracted hardware autists, even back before threads about modern games like Halo were permitted. The main difference between then and now is that back then, a hardware thread would be so dense with autism about system details, potential trolls would be stumped and confused, so would just leave them alone. Meanwhile this thread has, unsurprisingly, just turned into generic low-quality banter from /v/ rejects and a little reminiscing.
>>12713874Fascinating>The three things OG has over the gearbox port are the exact three things that would need re-written anyway if we got the Xbox source, these being netcode, sound and graphics. This effectively means the Xbox source would give us nothing for a new PC port.>As mentioned, sound is tied to special Xbox only hardware, the renderer is custom Xbox only d3d8 and the netcode does not exist.>You are not going to magically get Xbox shaders on PC with the Xbox source code, you are going to need to make a renderer that works on PC first. >This can just as easily be done with the Gearbox source.>The gearbox source could trivially have everything done by Chimera applied to it. This is true purely because binary hacks like Chimera are essentially doing that anyway, but in a much harder and cumbersome way.>Gearbox engine is based on old build of Xbox engine. And Gearbox engine simply doesn’t has some features(directional lightmaps, plasma shaders, etc)>Microsoft told them to support fixed function GPUs>and for some of the issues, there is no other explanation I can think of besides Gearbox having only an older tagset>Gearbox was given an August 2001 build. the Halo Xbox retail XBE was compiled on the 12th of October>Shaders had to be toned down for DX8 back then, the PC DirectX lacked a ton of calls present on the Og Xbox's DirectX, others were caused because of the game being based on outdated source code and some due to their incompetence.>The environment_reflection_bumped_radiosity shader doesn't get used in HPC and MCC (The pixel shader itself is also just a dummy shader). It actually does stuff on Xbox. It would affect shader_environment tags where the reflection type is set to bumped radiosity. I'm not sure whether any of the stock tags actually have it set to that.tl;dr>Microsoft gave Gearbox the Halo August 2001 build. halo xbox 01.10.12.2276 Oct 12 2001 is the retail build>343 give the Gearbox build to Saber Interactive in Russia
>>12706708Microsoft just gatekept the latest Nvidia's technolgy from late 2001 for a while. It was likely a very expensive deal to make the Xbox appear to be revolutionary early on.Again, just Microsoft being Microsoft. Just buying their way, in a dishonorable manner.
>>12706242I like quake, doom, counter strike, df1,2 and jk2I enjoy duke3d.Whats good about halo? Whats the best way to play it today? I havent played it.
>>12716413It's a lot more casual compared to those games. You're slow and there's auto-aim, but the lore is pretty cool. I guess The Master Chief Collection would be the easiest way to play it today.
>>12706558So it's a better game? Quake 3 was a death match arena where you hold 50 weapons, while Halo introduced a 2 weapon swapping system
