I miss this era of videogame graphics like you wouldn't believe
>>12708943Mid 3d?
>>12708943Same, that was the aesthetic peak of 3D graphics.
>>12708943Man, that floor would be a PITA to walk across in reality
>>12708943Yeah bro I also miss when game graphics began working exactly like standard modern graphics do today but with less power and memory to make the most of it.I sure miss graphics that can actually be objectively described as worse versions of current out-of-the-box visuals rather than emergent aesthetics born of creative workarounds. But personally I believe that with enough awareness and grassroots effort this LITERAL WORST POSSIBLE ITERATION OF WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE RIGHT NOW could make a comeback if only people weren't so stupid fucking blind to the factors that actually motivate their "tastes".
>>12709080Get better taste.
>>12708943nah, fuck bump mapping and specular sheenflat, absurdly high res textures is the way
>>12708943peak early 2000s was:sharp stencil shadows and plastic normal maps>id Tech 4, FEAR, Riddickphoto textures>Duke Nukem Forever>Half-Life 2>Max Payne 1+2
>>12708943I had to live through it, so I don't
>>12708943Meh it was fine and didn't really get many great games besides riddick. Thief 3 is also good but feels like people are over critical of it.
3D games have aged really well. Tip: Render low poly games at 8x native, then downscale them to get natural filtering. Then slap on CRT if you like the feel. I feel like PS2 era (including xbox) was THE era where graphics/music/gameplay were in peak unification. After that the tech obsession began.
>>12709080nah, early pixel shader graphics definitely have their own flavorthe things they fall back on because they're cheap/easy. mostly the shiny bump mapping
>>12709029Lose some weight, fatty.
>>12710207Bump and specially normal mapping was a fucking brilliant idea in its simplicity and effectiveness, and hardware capable of using it for real time graphics was a game changer in its day.The problem is that the texture map-based surface detail model that eventually became the PBR standard doesn't really work that well just with bump because everything ends up looking like toys made of the same material; but back then using two maps (color and bump) was a luxury already and if you saw roughness or metallic/dielectric variations it was usually applied to a full piece of geometry via a different shader model rather than selectively through the texture maps.Normal mapping and all the other new toys like screen-based post effects were exciting back in the day but definitely show their age now compared to those same basic principles fully fleshed out (and used with taste and restraint rather than the gleeful abandon of that frontier era).
I want colorsNo color = 7th gen
>>12710239>I want colors>No color = 7th genLook for kiddie games then
>Doom 3>Quake 4>Riddick>FEARI love lights and shadows so fucking much bros
>>12708943>I miss this era of videogame graphicsBut how can you miss it when you can still play all the thousands of games released from that era?
early and mid 00's was basically everyone looking at Id Software and thinking "we can do that too!"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeejxzwEbWY
>>12709213I miss UT3. Warfare was the best mode to ever exist in FPS so far.
>>12709080What kind of retard thinks Halo 2 isn't creative?
>>12709080>>12710207>>12710238Yeah, the older shaders really hit different. The modern PBR stuff with too many maps makes everything look fake and the same. The older shaders had a lot more artistic personality and made different games look characteristic and unique.
>>12708948Shiny and metal.
>>12710284basicaly all games are kid games.
>>12709387This is one of the worst things I've ever seen.
>>12708943I don't. Everything looked like it was made of plastic.
>>12712282>>12708943Crysis had this sort of aesthetic in it's early stages of development>>12712362that's what made it look so distinctit basically was 90's prerendered graphics, except in realtime
>>12712365Crysis does not fall into that category, since it had actual material shaders that made different surfaces actually look like what they were supposed to, with specular highlights that varied instead of simply having a single mono-shader applied over everything.>that's what made it look so distinctYes, and which is why I distinctly hated it.
>>12712362as opposed to nowadays where everything looks like play-doh?
yes
>>12709387Late 5th Gen through to the 6th Gen were the pinnacle of artistic style and flare that I just miss.
>>12709080based
>>12708943I remember them making a big fucking deal about "self-shadowing" as a visual technique used by Halo 2.
>>12709387Looks like shit anon
>>12713045Woah, so this is what 17 years of progress looks like...
How anyone can consider this retro is beyond me.
>>12715934Xbox was released almost 25 years ago.
>>12711127I already played these are there more? All I've been able to find with a similar look has been unplayable slavjank
>>12715934It's geared for SDTVs, it's retro.
>>12708949Favorite FPS ever. Managed to make office buildings creepy af. Best story imo in a video game w an incredible twist a lot of people claimed they saw coming but I think that’s BS. Sure there are hints that something’s up since Alma is “afraid of you” that there’s something different and special about you but she fears him, that doesn’t scream to me: he’s my kid!! Also the AI is just amazing. The game really only works properly on the most difficult setting tho because of this. Also 2 changed the visuals and sucked hard outside the school house. What a shit follow up to a great game. I’d love to see a movie of this in the hands of the right director. Since horror seems to be about the only genre getting things write nowadays it could absolutely work as a horror/action flick, swapping back from full blown action sequences to quieter character moments having a protag w an objective caught in the crossfire of a desperate corporation using its security team to defend areas from the psi op-ed soldier unit. I’ve attempted to start writing a prequel book but that’s pure horror as it deals w Alma projecting herself to her son as he’s a kid and horror shenanigans follow, something more physiological horror w the first season of stranger things as an aesthetic.
>>12716571SC Chaos Theory, Prey, Stalker, DE Invisible War, Thief 3, Far Cry 1, Timeshift, Condemned, Secret service security breach, Wolfenstein (2009 one), The Dark Mod, off the top of my head
>>12716640>first season of stranger things as an aesthetic. Was agreeing with you until then. Why would you want a retro 80s aesthetic for a FEAR movie?
>>12716778by Prey I meant the 2005 one obviously might as well add Quake Wars to this list as it runs on the same engine
>>12716813not him but didn't FEAR's plot with Wade running experiments on Alma start in the 80s or even earlier?
>>12715934What we know as retro has updated, ironically. It's time to accept that fact.
