I'm currently a decent chunk of the way through Super Mario World. It's been fun (even though I suck at platformers), but I'm contemplating which Mario game I should play next after beating it.Which game would you consider to be harder: Super Mario Bros. 3 or Yoshi's Island? I want to start with the easier of the two, but if there is another reason why I should play one of them first then please let me know.
>>12710840>Which game would you consider to be harder: Super Mario Bros. 3 or Yoshi's Island?Depends on how you plan to play them. If you’re going for 100% in Yoshi’s Island, then that. Otherwise, Yoshi’s Island is a very comfy ride. Mario 3 isn’t very difficult either, especially if you plan to use whistles, but you do say you suck at platformers, so it might cause you a bit of frustration. How challenging was SMW for you? Mario 3 plays more like SMW, Yoshi’s Island is a Mario game in name only. If you liked SMW and want something that plays more like that, then play Mario 3 knowing that it will pose slightly more of a challenge. Otherwise, Yoshi’s Island without going for collectibles is a very comfortable experience for someone who’s a greenhorn to platformers.
>>12710862SMW was pretty challenging at first, but for a while I didn't know you could go to the Ghost House to save multiple times so I was doing several levels back-to-back with only a few lifes.
>>12710873You can re-enter completed castles by pushing the L and R buttons simultaneously.
>>12710893Thanks, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. If I'm craving some more SMW-style gameplay then I'll probably play SMB3 first, if not then I'll play Yoshi's Island.
Don't use whistles, enjoy every land, it's more gratifying. Whistles are for fast travel to lands you want to replay, or when you want to restart where you left from a game over/power off. Also don't try to 100% Yoshi's Island before you beat the game, enjoy the ride and go back for whistles and 100% and stuff like that later. I also think SMB3 is considerably more difficult than YI.
Play SM3 then get Mario Adventure afterwards
>>12710840The last world in Mario 3 is definitely harder than all of Yoshi's Island. But, Yoshi's Island is still a bit harder than Super Mario World, though most of its difficultly comes late in the game like Mario 3.
>>12710840>>12711139world 7 on mario 3 is more insane than 8 but a lot of people forget this because they use whistles
>>12710840Yoshi's Island is harder by far, even without going for 100%, but it's also the worse game since chasing crying babies is stressful and not fun.
>>12710840World is much harder at the top end.
>>12710840believe it or not, I still never played mario 3! it scares it looks like a long game, old + long games are something to be worried about, as you have no way of saving your progressthe og super mario bros wasnt easy, so my worries come from there aswellyoshi island is a beautiful but also frustrating game. it's fun at first but then it becomes "FUCK IT WHEN WILL THIS SHIT END!?!?"100%'ing it is a HUGE kick in the balls
>>12711454truke.w7 is the real w8. W8 is annoying at worst, but mostly somewhat challenging. SMB1 had a harder last level imo.
>>12713637YI has battery saves. Just stop when you're done.SMB3 is a long game to beat in one sitting for a first-timer, but very doable. Makes for a great and comfy nostalgia gaming night though. So it's worth it imo.
>>12713709>Just stop when you're done.noneeding to collect everything in the level in one sitting in overcomplicated platfforming sections, puzzles, hard backtracking, without losing, THAT FUCKING SUCKS
Just a casual playthrough? Mario 3 by far. No saves, and even if you save state, world 8 is harder than anything in Yoshi’s Island
I like Mario 3, but I could never get into Yoshi's Island without falling into the collectathon trap.
>>12710862Wrong. Everyone I know who goes straight for the whistles on their first play don't develop the skills needed for the last world. Because the last world is a cakewalk if you played through all the prior worlds.TLDR. The whistles are the save system.
>>12710840Have you played SMB1, 2 and Lost Levels? If not, quite SMW and play those, then finish SMW, then play Yoshi's Island. Now to answer your questions, Yoshi's Island is harder than 3.
In terms of a vanilla no hard gameover, any % playthrough mario bros 3 is probably the hardest pure platformer I've ever played.
>>12710840Yoshi IslandYou can beat Mario 3 in a single day
YI 100% is actually pretty fucking difficult.
>>12710840I played both of these not too long ago, and I have to say SMB3 was consistently more challenging. Yoshi's Island doesn't ramp up its challenge until you unlock the secrets/extras in each world.
