The original has become so underrated these days. Everyone I talk to loves Zero Mission. It's disappointing as a remake, it doesn't capture that atmosphere of Metroid at all, it's so handholdy, you get a free heal everywhere, there's just no struggle, you don't feel isolated on a hostile alien world. I wish Nintendo would recapture this game's essence, give me that open ended design, those locations that look the same, no map, and hidden power ups. Hidden. I miss the era of gaming where everyone played similar games, but everyone had their own story to tell about the experience. Did you find the upgrade on level 5, no I beat the game without it, that was a doozy.

people used to super are never going to like how relentless the enemy corridors are in the original metroid, gives the game an entirely different pacing. instead of an adventure with resistance peppered throughout it feels more like a segmented binary with vertical exploration and horizontal bullet hell segments.
>>
never really got anywhere in the game as a kid. i dont think i ever beat a boss. any time i played it i already knew i would just be fucking around taking in the atmosphere and whatnot
>>
It sucks that you can only shoot in 3 directions, even Metroid 2 feels better to play
>>
Super Metroid, and to a lesser extent Metroid II, really redeemed the series
>>
Metroid 1 sucks. The series would be as forgotten as Kid Icarus if only the first two games existed.
>>
Metroid 1 is literally unplayable. Using savestates or playing the FDS version barely helps. This game is miserable. So many rooms look identical, there's no minimap and you don't spawn with full health are my biggest complaints. I'm not sure if it's relevant but I'm one of those people who thinks Super Metroid is the best game ever made, period.

It sounds like the game is perfect and working as intended though.
>>
>>12712310
Beat it many times as a kid, even mapped it out one time. But it is not great to go back to. Back at 7-8 years old it was amazing tho/
Metroid Planets the PC remake is so much better. The map and all other QOL is great.
>t. Only Metroid I haven't beat is Prime 4, although I do own it.
>>
>>12712325
Metroid II is poo poo on GB and even the remake. I guess it's just not my thing. I had to force myself to finish both games just to say I did.
I will give props to the 60 FPS patch for Samus Returns 3DS, that made the game so much better.
>>
>>12712530
Did you consider that maybe you suck at the game?
>>
>>12713020
Did you play AM2R?
>>
this game is like zelda 2 in that it's the black sheep of its franchise with obnoxious contrarian fans who personally attack anyone who levies valid criticism at it
>>
>>12713093
Not him but that's a weak comeback since nothing he complained about has much to do with skill.
Personally, I found the hardest part of metroid was caring enough to continue. Pattern went something like this
1. Explore new section, play carefully, pay attention to enemies, platforms and so on. Maybe make some mistake.
2. Master the section so I can get through without taking any damage.
3. Nth time I've had to backtrack through this area, ffs I just want to get to the objective. Mastery no longer feels rewarding, I don't give a shit anymore and just take damage because I don't care.
4. While ascending a long repetitive copy/pasted shaft for the 4th time, decide to take a break.
5. Urge to pick it up and play again never returns.
>>
>>12713395
it can be beaten in 30 minutes
>>
>>12712310
Mario, zelda, castlevania, mega man, all started on NES and are decent to play. Metroid? Garbage. The series started proper with Super Metroid.

I like the fan-made remake, M. Planets (formerly Metroid Planets). It stays true to the original, but it fixes most of its problems. Like this guy's complaints: >>12712530. It has a level editor and stuff, too.

No, I did GB then 3DS one pretty much back-to-back so I wasn't ready for another go. I'll check it out, I do have it on my PC from like 2 years ago still.

No, it's just the original Metroid that did a shitty job at it.

>screens are so repetitive you think the nes is glitching out and looping you forever

am2r doesn't count. it's not official.
anon is partially wrong, though. metroid 2 gb is excellent. samus returns is bad.

The final bossfight is one of the most aids bossfights I've ever endured in a video game.

Holy kino this is like mgs3.
>>
>>12712310
It’s genuinely a terrible game. Even the game boy sequel is light years ahead of it. There was a period of time where Nintendo packed Metroid 1 in as a bonus with new (at the time) Metroid games and NOBODY played it.
>>
>>12713170
“Valid” criticism like
>waaaaah I can’t memorize my surroundings, I demand a Map!
>its not super!!!!
>I played zero mission first, why should I play the nes version >:(
>very rarely an enemy follows me through the door, this alien makes it a 0/10!!!
>why is a game from 1985 not up to par with super? >:(
Or
>ew, it’s 8bit
>>
>>12716016
But the Metroid hallways literally require ice beam
>>
It feels more like an Atari 5200 game than a NES game. Unplayable.
>>
>>12716175
You clearly haven’t played many(if any) 5200 games

I beat Planets last year. Locked myself out of the ice beam before the metroid gauntlet like a retarded kid again too.
>mfw I realized what I did the instant I grabbed the wave beam after wasting the second ice beam upgrade an hour before

>>12716208
I admit that was a bit uncalled for. 5200 didn’t deserve that.
>>
>>12712530
>using save states or FDS
Holy shit the retardation on some of these zoomers. One of these is nowhere near the other. In no way are these two a shared category of things.

Metroid 2 was great. I had a notebook with maps, items and metroid locations, enemy stats, when and where the acid lowers, etc. Of course my stupid mother threw it out, with most of my other childhood stuff.

I thought Planets lets you toggle between Ice and Wave in the menu once you have both, you just can't stack them on the M1 map
I only have the old version with Novus, idk if it changed

Mega Man 2 has some good vertical platform segments.

The real problem with open world vertical platforming is that the devs too often don't put any effort into making them good. The world needs some vertical connections so they just half-ass some staircases or copy/pasted platforms. If they were properly designed they could be decent.

For me, it was how the game basically didn't have health pickups beyond the donuts that sometimes spawn when you kill enemies, so if you needed to fully recharge your health you were stuck spawncamping zebs at these pipes in picrelated (unless you got lucky with energy tanks). When I finally beat NES Metroid, it was at a friend's house right after college. His roommate would walk past the TV while I was playing and more often than not it was while I was fishing zebs for health, he kept asking me if I was actually having fun playing this shit since I'm just sitting near pipes doing the same thing over and over.

I haven't played Zero Mission so I can't say if it's better or worse than the OG, but as far as NES Metroid goes I'd only recommend it to people who already got into Metroid through some other game and are curious about its history. I get that when it came out it was a big deal, but it hasn't aged well, and I'm not even considering the lack of minimaps or the other usual complaints when I say this.
>>
>>12717186
I don't know man I couldn't find a way to toggle it. Either I was completely blind when I had the menus open or my version of the game differed from yours. I went straight into Metroid 2 afterwards so I don't remember much of my Planets playthrough anymore. I believe you though.
>>
>>12716240
How do you lock yourself out of the Ice beam? Not only do you get to keep it in M.Planets, but the Wave and Ice beams RESPAWN in the original game.

I know it's supposed to respawn, I literally went back to try and retrieve the ice beam again and it wasn't there. I don't fucking know man. I'm sorry.
