>The game sucks because... there's a lot of content
I can't get all the bananas in one go without switching KongsTherefore it sucks
I can't beat the fucking rabbitTherefore it sucks
The final boss is fucking nerve wracking
>>12712581I don't see Tiny Kong twerkingTherefore it sucks
This game is like if a regular world in Banjo-Kazooie got loaded with spam adverts. From cramming 25 golden bananas in increasingly lazier/more boring ways rather than just having a solid 10 collectibles per stage.
>>12712630Its should have less contentTherefore it sucks
>>12712660it should have less spam and more refined content
>>12712581It sucks because it's a nintendie game.
>>127125815th generation was the beginning of the end for video games. devs started prioritizing length over gameplay quality and we are suffering more than ever for this shift today
>>12712581>there's a lot of contentNo, that's what the game wants you to think.
>>12712581Haters gonna hate
Games should last 5min at most, imagine the gameplay density in a game like that!
>>12712581Yeah dude. That’s the reasoning. You totally genuinely believe this.
>>12712581>copy-paste the same content for one character to the other 4>WOAH THERE'S A LOT OF CONTENT
>>12712581>>12712581>>12712581No. It sucks because a bunch of morons have rose tinted glasses and suck it's dick everytime it gets mentioned but forget how stupid, elongated, broken and honestly bad it actually was for some reason. Rare was a good developer, but they made the game has no respect for your time at all and doubles-down on everything terrible about those collect all the zingo bingo cardboard pieces video games. It's the swan song of that genre that ironically killed them off entirely
>>12712581I do blame DK64 for modern gaming's filler checklist obsession.
lol at all the retards in this thread, OP meant the game doesn't suck
>>12713236>It's the swan song of that genre that ironically killed them off entirely
it's not a japanese mario or zelda gametherefore it sucks
>>12713236>respect for your timeOh jeez
>>12713236Am I the only one who loves Tooie but hates DK64? It's annoying when people say their design is one and the same.
Not liking DK64 is a waste of time.
>>12713441Posting threads about not liking people who don’t like DK64 is a waste of time.
>>12713446It's dumb to go modding DK64 to turn it into a different game to enjoy
>>12713483It’s dumb to be upset about somebody modding a single player game and playing it in the privacy of their own home.
>>12713441bars
did DK64 revisionism win? everyone seems to defend it now
>>12713521No it’s one retard posting about it on this board.
>>12713485It's the kinda shit anons should be praising. It's the epitome of "owning" your game when you can lift the hood and get it purring just the way you like. The joke "Every copy of SM64 is personalized" except honestly true for modder's expressing their enthusiasm for their games by tweaking them.Bedroom development should be cherished. This board's hateboner for all things modded is purely ludditical as fuck. Ludicrous, even.
>>12713430Tooie doesn't have near as much swapping, just swap to Mumbo once to do something in the level, plus Wumba's transformation
>>12712581the content isn't good. The level specific puzzles are fine, but the lazy barrels could be cut entirely and nobody would miss them. Special mention to the level where you had to play this garbage twice
>>12713236Like the silver coin challenges in Diddy Kong racing. Absolute bullshit. Rare did alright for a while, but they fell off hard.
>>12713575That's very queer, if you're going to play a game then play it, if you're going to be a raging homosexual modding games to be different then kill yourself.
>>12713645based and puristpilled
>>12712581Ive never had owned an expansion pak therefore it sucks
>>12713583That's only the start of the problems compared to Tooie. The levels in Dk64 are much more bland and less creative.
>>12713871The game comes with the expansion pak...
DK64 is one of the finest examples of hardcore history revisionism. The game was well received at the time>Nooo nintendo paid reviews!Even magazines that were not nintendo-biased praised it.I personally like it but it's not one of my favorites and prefer the Country games. Still my common sense can tell it's a good game and that nobody is forcing me to speedrun a 100% playthrough so when I played it I just took my time and enjoyed the ride. I find it funny how people complain more about things that non-autists don't care about (muh QoL change anywhere!) rather than the actually annoying parts of the game: some of these mini games like the beaver one
>>12713940No, I revisited it in late 00s and felt a sense of dissapointment. This was before the public consensus changed. I also revisited Rare's other platformers and they were a blast. DK64 in comparison was just sad.
>>12713949I guess different people have different tastes. As I said it's not my fav but I wasn't disappointed, it's still a good 3D platformer.I actually might prefer it to Banjo.
>>12713956I don't understand how anyone can feel that way comparing DK64 to Kazooie, or even Tooie for that matter, but maybe you see something I don't. I just saw large empty levels with collectibles and switches/pads friviously scattered about without a second thought. Like keeping a generic door closed thats only open when specifically using Diddy's gun or instrument, when inside its something any Kong could do.
>>12712581I think it's main issue is lack of gameplay variety. Too many golden bananas are just beat the minigame barrel and the minigames are rehashed over and over and aren't that fun or interesting. Banjo Kazooie was more creative in how you got jiggies
>>12712581It's kind of amazing how the few dozen lines of code that must vary between BK and DK can result in a best-of-system to worst-of-system spread.
>>12713236Stopped reading at 'respect your time'. In the future if you want people to honestly engage with your thoughts you need to avoid dishonest social media posturing buzzwords.
>>12713940You can do all the magazine archive diving you want but it doesn't matter because it's only 25 years ago so plenty of us are here who were there and actually experienced this disappointing game ourselves. It didn't even have pre-release hype from my group because there were screenshots, and it was horrific - traumatic even - to see the familiar high-poly Kongs transformed into 'real' but shit 3D. BK did not have this problem because there were no pre-rendered BK games. So it was overtly - and I remember feeling this way at the time - a massive downgrade although I also noted nobody would say or acknowledge this, probably because it was traumatic. Nobody felt like speaking against Rare generally either because that would break a spell, as if, if someone did that, maybe a veil might fall off your favorite existing games and you might lose the joy of them which you were fastly attached to. Anyway then when the game came out and people rented it, it didn't have the fun smooth momentum building movement that DK games had satisfied with in the first place, it was like achingly tedious to get around even compared to BK which already got you used to not-fun movement. It didn't provide a substitute appealing factor in the place of movement, so it was just dismissed. Not even worth re-rent
>>12714561(I'm joking saying traumatic but also not - it's not a serious level of it of course, but the phenomenon of experiencing something bad but having no outlet for it, no way to react so it just kind of sits and festers, well... If you think that doesn't apply - then why do I, an otherwise normal person, continue to post hate about the game decades after experiencing it for about 2 evenings?)
>>12713976>I just saw large empty levelsI see this phrase thrown around so much for so many games I simply became desensitized to seeing it. I just feel bad for anyone NPC enough to do that, now.
I guess I will just try the ROM hack
>>127125812 billion percent chance you're trolling, but fuck it. While it's true that it has about twice the content of most other platformers of the time, one, said content is arbitrarily divided into 5 different parts that are mostly inaccessible unless you ride the railroad for 3 levels to unlock all the Kongs, backtrack, find a tag barrel, retrace your steps, remember you forgot to visit Cranky/Funky/Candy this level, backtrack, realize you can't pay, comb the entire level for coinage, retrace your steps, repeat for 4 other Kongs, look up a guide and figure out (OK, maybe they tell you in-game, it's been a while) that you need to get good at the game's prequel from 20 years prior with completely different gameplay and beat it twice for some reason, and maybe go back and collect some blueprints if you're a casual. Am I forgetting anything? Man, seeing Mumbo to transform like once every other level in BK was fucking tedious. Why would you want to do that for 5 different characters in every level? What fucking masochist decided DK64 was a good idea? What absolute troll approved it for human consumption? Honestly, if your waiter shat on your plate, would you be happy because there's more content? I assume not. Thank fucking Christ Kong you only have to collect half the Golden Bananas and like a third or whatever of the regular ones. Even the devs realized no one would want to 100% this shit. Goddammit, I love this game because I had it as a kid and Stockholmed myself into loving it to get by, but it fucking SUCKS.
>>12713430It's the opposite for me actually. Well, except that "love" is a rather strong word for DK64.
>>12713430They both have five characters you switch between though. In Tooie it's Banjo & Kazooie, a transformation, Mumbo, Banjo, Kazooie.
>>12714653>, look up a guidedidnt beat the game
>>12714820Don't forget Clockwork Kazooie. Oh, and the giant statue guy. Banjo & Dragon Kazooie and solo Dragon Kazooie if you wanna get real autistic. Also, Rambi and Enguarde in DK. Anyway, it was less of a pain in BT because you could usually just change your character, hit the warp pad (which, unlike DK, connects to all the other pads in the level and tells you where you're going), activate the character's things in one go and change back. Even easier when you need to split up. There's usually some pads nearby. Meanwhile, in DK, some bananas are basically just shoot a switch, head all the way back to the tag barrel, come back with another character, shoot another switch, head back to tag, etc., etc., tag one more time to the Kong you actually need to pick up the banana and finally get your prize.>>12714827Yeah, I never did 100% it.
>>12712581Everything on this cataract simulator console sucks ass.
>>12713305Yeah and OP’s tendie defendie talking points are getting rightfully shat on. This game was the epitome of bad platformer design.
>>12713976This is the big issue with the game, really. Most of the character-exclusive content isn't locked behind the specific characters' abilities, but behind character-shaped keyholes. Mario 64 DS likewise has 4 different characters with exclusive powers, but only the few stars that require their powers specifically are locked to them. In DK64 everything in the game is evenly split between 5 characters for no actual reason.
>>12714881nah, I just see retards who cannot cope
>>12714892This, plus personally I think having collectibles like bananas and coins be character-specific is dumb. I could live with the tag barrel if I didn't have to keep going back to it to grab collectibles that by all rights I should be able to grab with another character if it weren't for the fact that they become immaterial unless you have the right Kong. You want character-specific collectibles? Lock them behind their specific abilities, not their presence.
>>12714892DK64 wasn't a soulless cash in remakeTherefore it sucks
>>12714561I just don't find reasons to hate on it.Backtracking and kong-swapping was never an issue to me because I never was hurried to finish the game, I wasn't speedrunning it, and I wasn't following guides either, I explored the game at my own pace so coming back to old levels with a new kong after a while felt lile rediscovering a level, rather than feeling like a chore.Again, I do prefer the Country games over 64, but I never disliked 64 either, and still think it's a good 3D game.
>>12715193Spot on. I got it the day it released and enjoyed the shit out of it. For my middle-schooler ass it was like my own personal playground and felt like the logical next step in 3D platforming after Banjo-Kazooie.It's only once games became "to-complete checklists" for later generations that it became a meme. It's a thing made for kids to spend time in back when dial-up internet was pay-by-the-minute. When you treat it as such it's a good time.I don't particularly want to replay it (haven't played it since '00), but it wasn't bad.
>>12715346>my own personal playground So this vs this >>12714653 impression seems to hinge on whether you felt the game's world was interesting in itself. If you were intrigued by the setting/location, then slowly moving around it to see more of it would be enjoyable and "collecting" would just be a notional activity to give it a little structure. Somehow the world grabbed you whereas to me it felt empty like here's a BK level stretched way out spatially and stripped of any features of interest
>>12715581Since I didn't address it in >>12714653, the world itself wasn't not interesting, but the tedium of all the backtracking ensured it never really crossed my mind to stop and smell the roses. Now that I think about it, yeah, the levels were kind of empty and stretched out, and despite their size and openness (once you managed to unlock the whole level, anyway) being greater compared to, say, Banjo-Kazooie, they felt claustrophobic because a lot of that "space" is tiny hallways leading from one overall smaller sub-level to another.
>>12715806>tiny hallways leading from one overall smaller sub-level to another. It took so long to get through these hallways too.
Let's be honest, most people got stuck at the Nintendo coin challenge and habe resented the game ever since.Over the years, they found a new word and used it as a scapegoat: "collectathon", but I remember how they cried back in the day when not being able to beat 1 loop of DK arcade
>>12715596Saved
>>12712581>There's a lot of contentIs that why half the bananas were just back tracking to a kong barrel, going back to where you were and hitting a switch?
>>12712581Okay, it has a lot of content, but is most of the content any good or fun?
>>12715839Yeah, they were cramped, but unnecessarily long.
>>12715842It's definitely harder than getting so many points in Jetpac if you know how to cheese Jetpac, but still not that hard.
>>12715842I think you're getting at something. Most of the contrarians don't have the patience to actually play through the game the way it was meant to be played in 1999. So they couldn't possibly have had the patience to 1cc arcade DK twice without guides or vids. It's easy to see how they would have gotten filtered back then without those things.
