>ST is more balancedI don't think A SINGLE genuine ST player has ever claimed that balance is one of ST's strengths, they will claim that every character having broken shit here and there makes the game FUN but never balanced.Everyone knows about Cammy vs Old Sagat.
>>12712687I don't think it's even close to perfection, it's just after 3S was the era of the online fighter. Once you have to account for 100ms of lag you can no longer have 1-3 frame response times on everything, you start needing 4-6 to hide the "rollback" in. Fighting games went from reacting to your opponent to playing footsies until you got a hit confirm then launching your canned combos. Sure, plenty of local tournaments in 3S have been won by human powered macro play, but unlike later games it's not the ONLY way to play. And that's what's missing from modern games and why they suck for people who lived the thing from SF2:WW to 3S and beyond.

It's based on a half-baked outsider understanding of the game's balance.yes Chun and Yun are strong. No, they are not auto-win buttons.especially Yun, anyone who thinks he's a ticket to easy wins doesn't know the game. If you don't invest time into execution and mastering and optimizing GJ combos and enders, you're playing a neutered version of the character that people who don't play 3S expect Yun to be.
>>12712687In short: everythingCapcom was on some crack when they made this game, every little nuance and detail is perfect. Its near the pinnacle of 2d art in videogames. Even the hitsparks are the greatest hitsparks ever made for a game. The sound effects, just the sound of a parry is one of the greatest sounds in videogame history. All the normals feel fine tuned to perfection, the dash frames, how much distance dashes cover, the jump arc and it's gravity, everything feels tuned towards the player having literally as much accuracy and feel of control than any other fighting game ever made. It creates these nuanced matches that feel almost rhythmic and communicative to other players. Like when you do something sick in Third Strike to other people who understand the game and its engine, its like its own form of communication. Its like doing something super advanced in table tennis, only people who play table tennis and its "feel" are going to understand. Its one of those few games thats transcendent above its genre. You dont even need to know a lick about fighting games to see plainly its the most high quality and professionally done, even third strike matches are more exciting and tense to watch than any other fighting game. Its like watching a 90s anime action scene in gameplay form
>>12715998Fucking lmao, this is like a parody of Third StrikefagsYou don't even play
>>12712927Pretty much this too. I never got to experience third strike in local settings but at least GGPO got it pretty close in the days where SF4 netcode was so bad it wasnt even worth playing and nobody in the SF4 community took Online ranked play seriously it was basically a side attraction. You can tell old games were tuned towards instantly reacting to opponents movements with swift defense. Nearly every normal comes out so fast that SF6 players are not used to it. You cant just frame bully people in 3s without much harder to execute tech, meanwhile SF6 designs every character around setups and frame bullying.

There's a very fundamental fallacy in Third Strike Fag's demand for replays. Basically, he's saying that in order to criticism 3rd Strike, you need to be good at the game.But...1. Why would being skilled at the game indicate the game is good? 2. Why would a person who thinks the game sucks get skilled at it in the first place? These requirements self-select for a person who will have favorable opinions on the game. Any criticism is hand-waved away as "you don't play the game". I don't *have* to play a game to master level to say that game sucks. That's *why* I don't play it!

No shit you're cynical as fuck you probably have put like 1000+ hours into this game and probably have done tons of training mode and know the nuance of every little frame and overstudied the fuck out of the game. Back then the Japanese players knew all that stuff and there was tons of mystique about Kuroda and the top players but I bet Kuroda would get bodied by your modern zoomer Third Strike player.

>>12716046Hes just being a troll and a larper anon. I recognize third strike has a ton of flaws in 2026, I didn't even really know about the flaws when I played the game back then. I knew Yun and Chun were OP but nobody I played against ever picked Yun or Chun. I used to think Dudley and Hugo and Makoto were the most broken characters because I used to play these guys that used to play in the arcade scene in LA and they were so good I couldn't get one round off them. Since I am from Utah we had good pings. I think they were from an Arcade called Family Fun Arcade? I was like 16 at the time and they were like 32. I mostly used Third Strike as a side game to learn the fundamentals of Street Fighter inbetween playing SF4 though. Also Third Strike always felt like i could "breathe" and have fun as a noob more against good players, meanwhile SF4 was a very strict game with very strict button timings and movement. A lot of people really complain about the parry meta especially air-parrying anti-airs but i really dont care about all that stuff. There never has been a more satisfying feeling that air parrying peoples antiairs on jump in.

Back in the day they would have been considered really really good for non-japanese. I literally just played a Q who knew all the tech.Theres been this recent wave since I think since the SF5 era where the younger generation really picks apart the frame data and the games coding and makes WAY better guides and tutorials for literally every popular fighting game now. I think thats a good thing but it also makes the game way more daunting to play, since back when I was young most players were really shit or just learning street fighter for the first time, so if you knew how to even parry people thought you were good.

>>12716234>>12716227>>12716225Someone needs to really do something about these ChatGPT bots. Its getting super out of hand. Its so obvious he's a botter but boomers are still falling for it.
>>12716231"skill ceiling" is more of a concept that exists within the actual games code from Day 1. Or at least thats how people used to use it. People usually say Third Strike has among the heighest skill ceilings next to Virtua Fighter just because of all the variables. I personally think Super Turbo and Smash Melee is a harder game to learn though, because so much of its meta is completely unintuitive and based around broken code and you would never know 99% of its tech without someone telling you the secret glitch behind it or reading tons of guides and watching tons of youtube tutorials and by that point you must have autism if you really care about a 30 year old game that much. I would say players being that much better probably just makes for a way more masochistic experience if you're a straight up noob and can't even comprehend what is being done to you, there is less mechanics at play that make noobs feel like they have a chance like modern fighting games. But Third Strike is just absolutely fucking brutal if you are playing by pure muscle memory and what is "expected" of you at a mid-level to do. Because Third Strike is literally about shutting down buttons, at least more than any other fighter ive ever played. You feel like you absolutely can't do anything and you're a total idiot if you're playing a really good third strike player, even if you're like "decent" at fighting games. (basic footsies, anti-airs, blocking, spacing etc)
Oh yeah not to mention keyboards and hitboxes have totally ruined a certain aspect of fighting games where I literally wont know if some asshole is cheating and has forward movement while holding block at the same time. Apparently there are "SOCD cleaners" that prevent that from happening, but you can just go into your device and find ways to take that shit out and you have an obvious massive advantage over stick and pad users. Its totally ruined the scene IMO.
>>12716256That's rough. I still play casually every now and then on stick. Are those hitboxes really that exploitable?
>>12716209>I swear people weren't calling characters "shotos" just a few years ago. This has been common video game parlance since the 90s.
>>12716261Even if they weren't (im sure they are but the nu-FGC defends them like nothing is wrong) You still have a massive executional advantage once you master leverless. You literally just type in inputs like you're fucking spock on the enterprise to do special moves and combos. Instantaneous directional input will always have an advantage over the small amount of time it takes the stick to hit those same directions.
>>12716272I started fighting games in 09 cause I am filthy 09'er and I can confirm "Shoto" has been around since 2009"Shoto" is literally just a character archetype now, regardless of game. Its like calling Guile a "Charge" character. It just means you have quarter circle/half circle fireballs and a SRK.
>>12716251>You feel like you absolutely can't do anything and you're a total idiot if you're playing a really good third strike player, even if you're like "decent" at fighting games. (basic footsies, anti-airs, blocking, spacing etc)That's because the game is trash.
>>12716184alpha 2 is even more broken than 3. With multiple customcombo combos, custom combos into super in custom combo and all that filth. And thanks to that is the most balanced alpha game there is.So much that they did a special rebalanced game for the Saturn with custom combos requiring more meter than supers and it was more unbalanced because the tier list was pretty much the same but now Zangief and Dan couldn't compete at all with the top tiers.
>>12716649>custom combos into super in custom combo and all that filth. That doesn't exist in Alpha 2, you're thinking of CvS2.
>He sperged out about people playing because nobody was buying the "it's unbalanced" critique anymoreBtw, if you genuinely think Yun and Chun are game ruiningly broken than you haven't played more than 2 retro fightans.

>>12712687everyone I know who has dedicated thousands of hours (me) and/or is godly at fighting games agree 3s is held back severely by the top2.

I was overselling that you could start the custom combos after a super https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ig-E8sBK18 (2nd combo and others) seeing how in A2 they deplete the rest of the bar left, it was EX2 where you could mix your custom combos with supers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00p7JSgFl0Y
>>12716209people have been saying "shoto" since at least the 00s bro
>>12716224nah the primary 3S wiki was hot ass for a very long time until just the last couple years when some discord autists started revamping itpeople who learned to play 3S at high level during all that time were mostly doing so at locals or in online cliques, learning from others and by word of mouth. every serious player goes to Japan now and then to grind games
>>12716280filteredthe front gate of 3S is feeling like you can't do anything because your opponent parries all your obvious pokes and counterpokes that you auto-pilot from your muscle memory in other games.once you keep the threat of parry in mind and start mixing up your timings and options to beat it you are beginning to actually play the game.parrying locks out the ability to throw tech so if someone is parrying every walk-up poke you do just walk up throw them until they switch up.I don't know why i'm explaining this. it's fighting games 101 level shit, if anyone reading this actually plays fighting games they already knew all this a long time ago. anyone who doesn't play fighting games doesn't care.
>>12712687Basically, despite what some people said in this thread, the game is actually very well balanced. If Capcom made a balance patch, they would only need to change a few specific things, like giving Chun one super bar instead of two, increasing Yun's meter requirements, and another small change would be reducing meter gain from whiffing. Those three little changes alone would make the game much more even, because yes, Chun and Yun really do dominate at the highest level, there is no way around that. But outside of that, 99% of players are never going to be in a situation where they are getting abused by Chun and Yun. On the contrary, a mediocre Yun is going to get destroyed by a mediocre 12. Chun is more beginner-friendly, and at the same skill level she will have more dominance, but the people who are actually affected by the top-tier matchup issue are that 1%, and those players either know exactly what to do or they are playing Chun or Yun themselves.Putting balance aside, what makes the game addictive is that there are layers upon layers of decisions that the player has to be aware of every single second. On top of that, there is also an element of randomness where even the theoretically best possible decision cannot beat everything. (This is why Daigo is always crying, because his surefire setups don't work 100% of the time in 3s) Basically, the game keeps on giving. The more you learn about it, the more there is left to learn. And on top of all that, there are parries. Parry is a mechanic that, once a player masters it, makes it impossible to play other fighting games without instinctively trying to parry things. At some point, the player starts to feel the attack coming instead of just blindly holding back to block. And when a game no longer gives you that possibility, it feels like you are being robbed of an ability you developed, like the game is artificially limiting your skill expression and forcing everyone into the same playing field.
>>12716953>Chun and Yun really do dominate at the highest level, there is no way around that. Jazzy Finale was won by an Akuma this year. The top 8 of 3SO last fall had 1 Yun and 1 Chun who made 5th and 7th place respectively. The grand final was Makoto vs. Hugo.Chun and Yun are top tier at high level but by no means do they dominate. One day you larpers will realize that overselling how strong Chun and Yun are gives away the fact that you don't really know or play the game

>>12717060Three entries among a sample size of over a hundred notable tournaments in history is not going to budge the statistical data very much. Additional to that, I have my doubts about the 3S community these days and their goals. It seems to be more important to gain style points by playing a lower tier even if you win than it is to just learn Chun-li and have a much better chance at outright winning. So this acts as as a not-quite-ban, but a communal frowning upon (there are historic precedents like O. Sagat in St in Japan), and this effect will be magnified at 3S specific events like the ones you listed, as compared to the winners of tournaments like Evo or Combo Breaker.
>>12713143>These days Claw, Chun, and Boxer are all regarded higher than O. Sagat. John Choi switched off of O. Sagat and plays as Ryu now.I play ST as my main game, and there is definitely a communal frowning upon of playing O. Sagat these days, and N. Claw is getting that reputation as well after Hokuto and Mao have made so many tournament outcomes rather boring. I highly suspect this is the reason why John Choi switched to N. Ryu, and not because he thinks Ryu is better than O. Sagat.
>>12717337It's because of clips of the current Japanese playerbase who goes by team format.People fucking LOVE Aihara, Pachikasu and TM playing their low tier mains.
>>12717337>t-they're just not picking chun and yun on purpose!you're retarded and you don't know anything about 3S.fuck off back to jrpgs or whatever you play, tourist.
>>12717337modern 3S players play other characters because Chun is boring, Yun is a lot of work, and for as good as you have to get at the game to compete at top level anyway, you can pretty well make any character work, so you might as well play whoever seems fun and cool to you.Nobody cares about "style points".
capcom had the revelation that inputs shouldn't be a pain in the ass to do and doing the rough motion was enough of a hurdle in the speed of an active match.
>>12717552post replays, fightcade id, and drivers license or you're full of shit
>>12717320lmao I have no idea I just have this gif. Also his camera was not always green, one day it just started being green because a chip died in it or something.
>>12717752You were expected to treat sanwa and hori parts roughly to get your inputs out. They were designed to take a fucking insane beating. American cabs literally kept getting ruined back in the day because people would crank that fucking shitty joystick as hard and fast as possible to get special moves to come out. Nothing was ever as broken as the MvC2 cab unless you were in a good arcade that used japanese parts.
>>12712725That’s all true. And it’s still the greatest 1v1 fighting game in history. Also arguably even better than the greatest tag fighting games as well.
>>12712704Alpha 2 is great…for tards who refuse to want to adapt to anything more complex than the best of the SF2 series, like ST & Hyper Fighting. I see Alpha 2 as the perfect visual and gameplay evolution of the SF2 series. But IMHO Alpha 3 Mogs alpha 2. Same beautiful artstyle, but with a much harder OST. Much bigger roster. And the ISM’s … especially RAC-ISM, make the game way better, so long as you don’t mind more complex gameplay variations and thus, calculations. And finally, SF3: 3rd Strike mogs all the alpha games, graphics wise, and adds some truly perfect gameplay evolution as well. Its drawback ? Very small roster, with some unusual faces. If CAPCOM ever did the decent thing, and issued a 4th installment of SF3, using all stages and all theme songs, as well as almost all the most popular, and timeline apropos alpha series sprites, as well as a playable poison, they would have the greatest fighting game of all time all over again.
>>12716215>Nta, but I remember people calling them ryu clonesThey absolutely did, in magazines in the 90s. The 'hardcore community' were calling them shotos in the 2000s.
>>12712709Daigo has always thought 3S is mickey, what are you talking about?
>>12718408>especially RAC-ISMThere's racism in the game? Maybe I judged the game wrong
>>12712687freedom of expression, skill/technical ceiling and character metas that seemingly have no limit (though definitely diminishing returns over the years), looks and sounds great, and unlike almost all modern games it's f u n. unfortunately it's not always intuitive and like old arena shooters or RTS games the better player will always unambiguously gap the lesser player which practically makes it unplayable to 99.9% of 06ers and on.
>>12717337This anon's right you knowIf 3S had a yearly invitational for $1,000,000 with thousands of players competing throughout the season, you'd see only Yun and ChunThe only reason you dont is because people play this game nowadays strictly for fun. They're not pros the same way modern fighters have pros.
>>12718532No, the rest of the top tiers are also insanely strong to not use, specially when tournaments have adapted the team format.
>>12718532this is false. the modern scene aren't traveling en masse twice a year to Colorado and Texas (some even coming from Japan) for the modern 3S majors strictly for fun. they're trying to be the best and stand on top.Fact is that if you still think of 3S as the Chun and Yun show in 2026 you simply don't know the game.
>>12718953Biggest 3S tournament of all time was won by Chun and it wasn't that long ago.
