When's the nova shipping? I get they said late July but hoping that doesn't mean the very last day of the month.
Y'know I preordered a Nova for me and one as a present for my BF, with the full intention of keeping the GameCube colourway for myself and giving him the ice blue, being that blue is his favourite colour. The more people talked about how green this particular shade of greenish-blue actually is, and the more I saw irl footage of it, the greener it looked, and the more I started to panic that he won't like the colour, and started thinking about contacting Retroid to switch up my preorder. I opted instead to order some black buttons thinking it would make it look nicer, and it does, but still felt it was a band-aid on a big gaping wound. And then I decided I'd just give him the Gamecube version, which I know he'll like too, and just keep the button-swapped ice green for myself. And y'know what? Now that I'm not panicking anymore, it's actually growing on me. It was still a mistake for Retroid to settle on this particular hue and that a proper blue or green would have been better, and if I knew DIY buttons were an option at the time I'd have ordered a black unit instead and a set of GC buttons and stick caps for that, but at least I'm not on the verge of puking from buyer's remorse anymore like I was during that RetroHandhelds livestream. Now that it's not going to be a gift anymore, just a new gizmo for me, I can live with it.
>>12712883tl:dr
>>12712884>tl:drIce blue Nova looks less yucky with black buttons
>>12712742I'm growing fond of my setup again, the controller stopped acting up and now it's just a cheap setup where CRT shaders look nice and that plays most of what I want. If you turn off your notifications when playing, or just happen to be more low profile, then this works perfectly well, only way I can think I'd like this better would be with a 4:3 foldable.

It's cool that Retroid sells all the different buttons as add ons, but it's weird to not include the sticks too. I want to make this and it doesn't look as good with the grey/black sticks. I don't want to buy shitty 3D printed ones from some third part seller. It would be nice to get the official ones. I wonder why they don't include them as an option or with the buttons.

what is a good emu-handheld that can easily play up to PS1? I have a hacked New 2DS XL and a stock 3DS xl for all other handheld gaming but need something specifically for PS1 and GBA.
>>12712742I wanted to play outside while waiting, but currently the sunlight makes it impossible, even in places with some shadows. Do anti glare protectors work or are they a waste of money?

Anbernic RG SP vs Konkr Pocket AdvanceGO!
>>12713315Wait a minute, this is just GBA vs GBA SP!
>>12713240You either go cheap with PCSX ReARMed and 1x res (failing at some edge cases) or a little expensive with Duckstation that'll enable other systems.>>12713315At gun point? Konkr, and I say this knowing next to nothing about it. Doesn't look like SP fixed anything other than dropping the sticks, and flipping the display to get rid of the forehead costs latency.
>>12713263>I wanted to play outside while waiting, but currently the sunlight makes it impossible, even in places with some shadows. Do anti glare protectors work or are they a waste of money? They do work, but only to a point, if you're getting glare from indirect sunlight say reflected light or something like that, then they'll make quite a big difference, but if you're in direct bright sunlight they won't make too much of a difference to be honest. As long as you can get somewhere a little bit out of direct sunlight, and you turn the brightness up with an anti-glare screen protector on, they do work.
>>12713329>and flipping the display to get rid of the forehead costs latency.uhh elaboratethere are no native 3:2 displays? is rg34xx flipped?
>>12713334There are, far as we can tell anbernic commissioned those. We're expecting ol' Max to have fixed the forehead on the 34xx by flipping the screen upside down. 34xx/SP are not flipped.
>>12713263This is where original hardware is better. Get something with a reflective screen, like a Game Boy Color.
>>12713315Depends of how expensive the konkr ends up being. You don't need a very expensive device for GBA and there aren't any heavy shaders that are needed for a more accurate look to the original screen. Unless konkr ends up being something crazy like an oled with a high resolution screen I'd rather get one of the gba clones from anbernic.
>>12713069you're momma is cute

>>12713240Retroid Pocket Classic
>>12713240Check out the mangmi air x, it's 16:9 so it's not perfect for both systems but it's a good middle ground between the two aspect ratios and you get a very large image compared to other native screens around the 100 dollar price point. You also get to play psp and n64 which you can't on the 3ds.I also want to mention that the 3ds has native support for GBA through moding so no emulation needed. The image might be a bit blury tho if it's blown up to fit the screen.
>>12713240anything over $30 plays ps1>>12713329actually retroarch core has enhanced resolution in the core options which makes it 480. 100% compatiblity for the games people have heard of and actually want to play, 99.99% for the rest. >>12713338no.

Rocknix already running on the Nova, releasing on next nightly.
>>12713605Having a jailbroken Vita 1000 never fails to make me pause on buying a chineseheld, it's great. That said I like the idea of a cheap micro form factor handheld that can disappear in your pocket like the RG28XX or Miyoo A30 so I wish there were more like that.
>>12713660That form factor was the norm for pre linux, non-android chinkhelds.
>>12713646how is rocknix typically for performance compared to just running it on android with a frontend?do you lose a lot of power? im not really a fan of android desu and would prefer linux
>>12713660The perfect actually-pocketable handheld was all I wanted for a long time. Then I realized even with Syncthing, I rarely carried my Brick or RG28XX in my pocket outside the house. There just isn't a need to occupy more than a few impromptu minutes in a typical day, and the phone I already have in my pocket is plenty good at that. The best general use size is somewhere in the RG35XX to RP Nova range. Big enough to be comfortable to hold and see, small enough to fit in a bag and carry in a pocket between rooms at home.
>>12713683Well, android frontends are fucking horrible comparatively, while ES and the Linux build of RA avoid a ton of quirks of the android versions. There are factors like different emulators and drivers, but generally speaking you do lose some performance, as well as Rocknix refusing to offer Switch until it's discontinued. The starkest difference initially is in power management, you can't just leave it on and have it drain 1% overnight.
>>12713605>>12713660The vita is a quality nipponheld but it's retro capabilities are subpar, even for ps1 and psp. Chinahelds are better at it. It would have been great if the original RP6 design didn't get rejected by redditors and we could have had a modern vita (no the rg vita doesn't count)
What's the most painless way to play steam/pc games on this fucking thing? I can't look at it ever since the thor got announced but I should at least try to get through my vn backlog.
I will wait for Russ to tell me how to configure the Nova in the best way possible
>>12713696Use it to order a UMPC. Failing that, throw games at gamehub lite/gamenative randomly and hope they run (then manually clean up the containers they leave behind taking up space). Guides for running japanese VNs on Linux are your friends, for what little setting up it allows you anyway. Oh, and you'll want to set up scrcpy so you can just use your PC to control things instead of tapping tiny windows and buttons, any guide for phones will work.
the rg vita counts and is the definitive vitaheld experience

Btw having just a soundbar is massively gay. At least have a proper stereo setup with amp/speakers, if not 5.1.2 surround sound at minimum.
>>12713786I think we plateau for a while. The newest chips are too expensive, and so are memory and storage. There also isn't much that current handhelds lack the power to emulate, at least until new software arrives.SD8 Gen 2 is realistically good enough for years to come, and will probably keep appearing in new devices. Odin 2 buyers were way ahead of the curve (shame about the screen though).
>>12713786The better question is when will Qualcomm and google actually put some work on the the OS and drivers and make android a viable way to play vidya? It's weird how none of the big companies have caught on to the fact that Android is becoming a way to actually play steam games. You'd think the Taiwan based companies would be all over this and how you can throw your compact Asus ROG steam capable handheld in your bag and play it on the go without lugging around those massive pc handhelds.
I'm still torn between the Odin 2 Portal or the Nova. I'll wait for Russ' final Nova review before making my final decision but so far I think I'm still leaning towards the Portal just because of the much better battery. Not much of a fan of 16:9 and the glass front but oh well.
>>12713843>Odin 2 Portal or the NovaI'm not sure how you could compare these when they're so different. I have a Portal and I preordered a Nova with the goal of selling the rest of my handhelds if the Nova lives up to the hype.

They are comparable in that they are horizontal similarly priced OLED do-it-alls(nova is not great for 16:9 but I have no interest in those games, just retro up to gen 6/ps2) that essentially have the same emulation performance.to me the nova positives are the 4:3 ratio, no glass front, nicer sizethe portal positives are the better battery, better sound, better fan

>>127138411. google isn't concerned with making lagdroid a vidya os2. lagdroid works perfectly fine for mobileslop "games" where input latency and degrading performance over time really don't matter because they're not real games3. lagdroid is impossible to make into a real vidya os due to the nature of its design but especially due to the architecture that it's built from (java)
>>12713880different people tolerate it differently. I wouldnt spend any significant time on it without a grip
>>12713843>I'm still torn between the Odin 2 Portal or the NovaYou're quite literally picking between a small-ish 4:3 handheld and a large 16:9 handheld. That alone is more than enough to tell you which of these are for you. They're not really comparable unless you literally don't give a shit about 16:9 vs 4:3, the +70% more weight and size on the Odin 2, and the 40% bigger battery capacity on Odin 2.>>12713858The battery life might not be that much different in some scenarios considering the Odin 2 has 60% more pixels to render, which means the GPU will be stressed more and the SoC might want to use 30%-50% more power overall.
>>12713895from what I hear portal does an average of 5 to 6 hours of ps2, nova 3 to 4

Nova should work with those no problem. If you want to play PSP you are better of with an RP6 (it's also a better option of you are ok with black bars)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cGroQGl8hs
I have an Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini, but I didn't like the d-pad at all on it and couldn't get into it.I wanted to use it as a GameCube device but it couldn't muster it, even a less demanding game like Mega Man Network Transmission could freeze at random. How's the d-pad on the Retroid Pocket Nova or their earlier handhelds? It's literally a make-or-break thing for my enjoyment of any of these things.Still enjoying my RG34XXSP to this day, mostly play Aria of Sorrow and Super Metroid rando on it. Those along with Tetris are my benchmark games for testing controls and inputs.
>>12717162Personally I think retroid and Ayn have top tier D-pads
>>12717162It's like a vita dpad, where it's clicky, not mushy like a regular controller.
>>12717176Vita's one of the few handhelds I've never used, my background is Nintendo stuff.Clicky sounds good though. I don't like over-sensitive diagonal inputs which I found the Pocket Air Mini was prone to having; it can fuck up a lot of your jumps in Super Metroid. On the other hand, it can make input commands in fighting games and Symphony of the Night harder, but I don't play those often enough for it to bother me.
>>12717162Let me put it this way: I've been looking for a controller with a d-pad like Retroid's for two years.
>>12717162just make sure you get a solid color(black, 16bit or gamecube) as the transparent dpads(and buttons) are slighly harder and therefore less comfy

>>12717196>>12717201Sounds great, I'm gonna check out a video review and make my decision, but I'm really leaning towards this. Also GameCube is my pick, I love that they gave it a yellow stick too.
>>12716414I've used Syncthing for both states and saves between Anbernic, Android, and TrimUi handhelds (with a Windows server in the middle of it all). The experience varies more by OS than by handheld:>MuOSEverything just works, both saves and states.>NextUISaves work great, but states are a pain because NextUI doesn't have an auto load/save state feature (you only get state slots).>AndroidRetroArch and anything else that lets you pick the location of your saves works. Emulators that use hardcoded locations suck because of scoped storage. Everything works if you're willing to root.If you're going through the trouble to set it up, use auto states. It's really nice to stop mid-game on one handheld and pick up exactly where you left off on another.
>>12717240You won't regret it. I have a kilometer long list of grievances with Retroid, I'm still mad they allowed reddit to ruin the RP6's improved design, the shit they pulled with the Mini was criminal and I would never buy from them again had I ordered one, but the d-pad is sick, they got me by the balls.
