Where do you draw the line in the sand between reasonable challenge and complete bullshit?
>>12712967When it becomes tedious
>>12712967If I have to use the same broken combo repeatedly.
>>12712967>reasonable challengei can win>complete bullshiti can't win
>I'm an actual old games enjoyerReasonable challenge>I'm a modern Retro Gamer ™Complete bullshit, objective bad design, the devs didn't know what they were doing, rental difficulty and savestates/rewind QoL fix the bad designSimple as
If it's enjoyable and it feels like there's a clear path to progress. I don't mind grinding for a 1CC in some arcade games, but then I see something like Kingdom Hearts where people play no exp runs which sounds like a completely miserable experience, since when I tried playing even on just regular Proud mode, I'd get knocked down from decent health to dead by offscreen attacks that I didn't see or hear coming.
>>12712967when the only way to succeed is insert more coins
>>12712967Like comix zone and chakan the forever man. Both hard games but Chakan the forever man is bs
its complete bullshit when the game forces you to take an obligatory hit to your health or takes one of your lives in order to get an item or to get somewhere.Or when there's like 0.01% chance you'll succeed going unscathed and the game throws tons of enemies or attacks your way, then fuck that game, I just rewind and state save until I manage to beat it.
>Play for 3 hours and die>Game Over>Takes you to Title Screen>Starts you from the beginning of the game, watch the intro scene in disgust>No Save system/password system because fuck you

>>12712967I can actually explain this from the perspective of someone who has playtested multiple horror games and a few horror mods but you posted a frog and that means you're a bad person.
>>12712967Unpredictable attacks that break the conventions of the game: like Sodom in Final Fight and the second boss of Captain Commando.Metagame mechanics that are never explained in game, but are crucial just for completion: like Battle Garegga.Arcade games are a treasure trove of bad game design, it comes with the business model.
>>12712967If I'm not having fun repeating the runback or recuperating losses before trying again, the game just failed to be fun while trying to have a high difficulty moment.
>>12713210that sucks, i wish to hear ur input but i agree frogs on /vr/ is highly estrogenated behavior
>>12713109Games like that were usually about 1.5 hours long at the most.

>>12713210Honestly, your contributions aren’t as important as you think lol
>>12713210ok tourist
>>12713210>I can actually explain this from the perspective of a retarded child
Losing 30 mins or more of progress and having to replay extremely simplistic sections again just to get back to the sections that caused difficulty. Also the stuff everyone can agree on like off-screen or unpredictable hazards, bad hitboxes, unclear hurt boxes or expectations, slippery or bad or inconsistent controls.
>>12712967What does the reddit frog have to do with that?
