Oldfags: was the backlash about Curse of Monkey island's art direction as bad as Wind Waker's back in the day?
>>
>>12713406
I remember some people getting violently angry about it back in the day, but afaik not to a decades-long mindbreak degree like with the Zelda game.

It was not bad enough, and the consequences of not violently, and permanently, beating the message into game publishers, propagate to this day.
>>
>the backlash about Curse of Monkey island's art direction
It was about few purists.
>>
>>12713469
There's an irony in consumer conditioning festering into this "mindset" lmao
>>
>>12713469
this looks like corporate globohomo art style
>>
>>12713536
that's the official latest entry in the series fyi
>>
>>12713406
I was more put off by changing his whole personality from a doofus chad to a wimpy dork.
>>
>>12713585
Actually playing the first two games may have cushioned the surprise for you then
>>
>>12713406
It wasn't. I liked it, all my friends like it. Never met anyone who didn't back in the day. Maybe there was some minority, but in general, back in the day, games taking advantage of the technology was welcomed. This whole "they ruined it and it's not Ron Gilbert's vision thing" is the same post-modern revisionism I keep seeing about Quake 2 being disliked by Quake players. Had they done this in pixel-art not this cartoon style, everyone would shit on it being dated. Retro wasn't a thing in 1997 and people were fed up with pixels.

>>12713469
It's exactly the art style Ron Gilbert wanted and he said so, so not a publisher decision.

I'm glad that Return to Monkey Island happened, cause finally all those revisionist fags who propped up Ron to be some great visionary, finally realized he's just a hack (Thimbleweed Park was so dogshit).

I liked Escape.

I love Curse so much it hurts sometimes. I played It at release as a wee lad and it still feels like home in some way. The music is so beautiful.
>>
>>12713406
Just about everyone loved it. Don't forget at that point we'd already had three cartoony LucasArts adventure games, with only the Dig as an oddity in-between.

There was much more of a Backlash against EMI's polygonal ugliness
>>
>>12713406
We mostly just complained about the much worse UI.

COMI is one of the most beautiful games ever made. bill tiller's talent put him in a league of his own. it's a shame a game was never made again in a similar art style. the 90s were just all about using the latest and greatest tech at the time.

>>12713406
Nah, it was fine, felt relatively on-model and fit the tone well.
>>
>>12713406
The problem with Wind Waker is that the game came out in an era where consumers were expecting increasing graphical fidelity from their games. WW was seen as a straight downgrade because of it, regardless of its artistic or technical qualities.
>>
>>12713406
I didn't like it so I skipped it. Not much else to say.
>>12713469
I saw pics of this so I skipped it. Not much else to say.

I guess the short of it is games, media etc... don't belong to me, I just buy a copy. If it looks like a downer or it may suck, I just skip it. I can reject feeding money to companies that make bad decisions, let other people complain. If they fail it isn't my problem. But if I blow money on a stinker it is my problem, I'll keep my money.

I think the way curse turned out makes sense given the higher fidelity line art and want to do fully animated cutscenes. lechuck's revenge was definitely a hybrid of whacky cartoon distortion and traditional heroic adventure illustration, but that dynamic was a lot easier to pull off with abstract low res in game character sprites and largely static cutscenes. for the needs of curse of monkey island the path of least resistance was just fully adopting day of the tentacle's cartoon style.

it's been a yearly replay for me for over a decade. do it anon.
>>
curse really threaded the needle of mass market casualization while remaining a functional adventure game with actual puzzles in hindsight way more deftly handled than the clunky interactive story experiences that followed it.
>>
>>12713469
This is horrible and lazy. There is no excuse for it.
>>
>>12713406
>Backlash
First time I heard of it, I played it a few months after release and loved it, still do. Even decades after, and knowing pretty much every solution to the puzzles is still fun to come back to. My favorite point and click.
>>
>>12713469
even if you don't like curse's direction it had straight forward reasoning behind it, silly cartoon game has a silly cartoon style. returns abstract harshness is much more of an imposition on the property.
