>don't eat this pie when your character remarks that they're hungry because several hours later you need to throw it in the face of a snow monsterI fail to understand how this sort of logic is properly conveyable in the course of the game.
>>12713503Wrong game though; not that it's any better. The only KQ worth shit is the one where they got a proper designer to curb Williams' self-satisfied nonsense.
>>12713516I only know about that puzzle in passing, hence not knowing which game it applies to, but it seems to epitomize the mindfuck nature this genre became known for.
>>12713519That's okay. Memes and e-celeb parroting say more than real experience ever could.
>>12713503First thing to check is if he dies from starvation if he doesn't eat the pie. If not, save it for later.
Many NES games were hard as fuck so it took a long time to complete them. This meant that buyers didn't feel ripped off after purchasing something they could finish in half an hour. I don't see why point-and-click games can't do the same.
>>12713571they were hard without resorting to insane moon logic puzzles that only a schizo would figure out
>>12713770>>12713503>>12713519There are almost zero puzzles in point and click games that involve you actively eating an item to solve it. Sounds more like you doing stupid shit and then getting angry for being penalized for it.>>12713516Kill yourself faggot retard.
>>12713770>they were hard without resorting to insane moon logic puzzlesNo, they just relied on insane cheating AI and forced deaths. Why do you think Nintendo sold a magazine that had cheatcodes in it that allowed you to actually beat the fucking games?
>>12713503>>12713820Considering how apparently neither of you is familiar with the actual game, I guess the real puzzle is which makes for the biggest idiot: attempting to criticize it or trying in turn to defend it.
>You lose points immediately, so you know you did something wrong>obviously you should not fall into temptation>also pies are dessert, not food
The queen of /vr/. You just know she shagged like a minx.
>>12713560not starvation, but the pie is a valid hydration option, saving you in the desert, putting you in a 'dead man walking' softlock you wouldn't be aware of on a first play.
>>12713503It's specifically a custard pie and throwing custard pies in people's faces was a staple in slapstick comedies.
>>12713842no need to derail the thread with random misinformation about Nintendo
>>12713503by making money with selling solutions
>>12713560>>12713973You lose points when you eat the pie. Any action that makes you lose points in games like this is always the wrong solution.
>>12713820>There are almost zero puzzles in point and click games that involve you actively eating an item to solve itThere is a puzzle in Space Quest that requires you to drink the dehydrated water to stay alive. Pretty sure I remember another puzzle in Monkey Island that required you eating something as well.
>>12714917>There is a puzzle in Space Quest that requires you to drink the dehydrated water to stay alive. No, you get softlocked it you do that. You need to use the dehydrated water as a makeshift explosive later.
>>12714926>you get softlocked it you do thatHow? You can use it to kill the wookie but thats optional since you can also kill the monster by baiting the spider.
>>12714932Really? Wasn't aware of that, I always used the water.
>>12714935Yeah, I was awful timing the rock drop so I always opted to kill him by getting the spider and him to fight, then they blow each other up.
>>12713503it was a giant puzzle. you were expected to play around with it for months. restarting here and there when you got stuck, talking to other people who were also playing the gamepeople didn't have endless streams of instant entertainment back then, so they had to get very familiar with the few games they had
>>12714961>people didn't have endless streams of instant entertainment back thenNow they do.If its main draw was "you don't have anything else to play anyway", then it doesn't hold up.
>>12713503piracy was so rampant they only made money on the hint books. the pie quest is your fault.
>>12713770No, they really needed puzzles like that. Play through a graphical adventure game with a walkthrough, so the puzzles don't slow you down at all, and you'll be done in about two to four hours. They aren't long games, they really depend on the player getting stuck and spending time trying to figure out what to do next in order to pad out the game time. Games like Riven are an exception, where even knowing what to do there's still hours of gameplay to reach the end. They aren't all as short as Myst, but many of them are quickly cleared.Police Quest 1's VGA remake is a great example. If you don't know how to deal with the stolen car traffic stop, you'll be stuck there for ages. The majority of stuff prior to that is very easy as long as you think like a cop and follow procedure to the letter. The majority of stuff after that is similarly easy, or the only logical or reasonable action to take. If you know how to deal with the stolen car scene, you can clear the game and see every single line of text and animation possible in about 3 and a half hours. Without a moon logic puzzle thrown in there somewhere, most graphical adventure game puzzles are quickly solved. If not for the stamps or the telescope puzzle or the arcade score puzzle in Maniac Mansion, players would have very little trouble clearing it. Everything else is mostly straight forward or very logical. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is another good example. Anyone who watched the movie already knows what they need to do. So at the pixel hunting first trial of the grail at the end of the game is the only thing really stopping most players from finishing. Or adapting to the boxing system for combat.
Like a lot of games back then, it was filled with traps like this solely to force you to replay the game again and again until you trial-and-error your way to the proper solution.
>>12713503>zoomer human trash shits himself and screams in poorly parented rage when he isn't given the bing bing wahoo you win screen in one try
>>12714968No one cares that you're literally shitting yourself in blind panic over.. *checks* a toy. That's your problem, no one else's.I can't imagine how truly miserable and awful your zoomer life is every day. You picked "retro games" as your hobby for.. SOME ineffable reason, and you can't even have fun with it. Just squirting shit into your pants every single day. Just miserable about the only thing you do in life. How do you end up this incredibly pathetic?
>>12715078I forget who said it, might have been Ron Gilbert, but he said the best part of adventure games isn't when you're playing them, it's when you're doing something else and the solution to a puzzle just randomly pops into your head. That feeling just can't be replicated today where getting stuck is seen as this ultimate frustration.
>>12715283>*checks*Check your estrogen levels instead, shit-for-brains.
>>12714968You're literally arguing that slop is superior to games you actually engage with. The Last Man in his purest dopamine gorging form. Some Sierra games had bullshit dead man walking scenarios, but most outside of KQ5 were fairly reasonable. If you were allergic to restarting, it was a simple thing to create a new save at regular intervals (start of an act/segment, major puzzles, even every time you accumulate points.) If effort is a disqualifier for you, there are plenty of bing bing wahoo games for your addled mind.>Now they do.This is a retro board, nobody gives a shit about "now" here.
>>12715701>You're literally arguingI argued no such thing, you retard. I only said people have more options for retro games now, and if your favorite game relies on the player not having something else to play for literal months on end, then don't be surprised that it's not compelling anymore.
>>12715715>I only said people have more options for retro games nowPeople always had more options you fucking tard, the term you want is access. Your argument is about accessibility to more games, and that actually makes a difference to how a lot of older games were designed. You were intended to get your money's worth out of them, not beat them in a few hours.>and if your favorite game relies on the player not having something else to play for literal months on end, then don't be surprised that it's not compelling anymore. Its not "compelling" because you've curated the game out of the video game. Instead of enjoying a fresh fruit, you squeeze all the juice out and bypass all of its nutrients in pursuit of that sweet, sweet sugar. Yeah yeah food analogy fuck off, it fits people who want to sleepwalk through games just to add a checkmark to a list.
>>12715580I've had moments like that, and they're great. All it takes is patience and the willingness to engage with games on the level they want to be engaged with.
>>12714932>but that's optionalREEEEEE, SIERRA SUCKS, THEIR GAMES DON'T HAVE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS, SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP!
>>12715715>and if your favorite game relies on the player not having something else to play for literal months on endActually, he was making a statement about free time and the fact that gamers used to have something called "patience".Besides, just look up a walkthrough if you're stuck. Isn't that what you zoomers do for every single game nowadays anyway? What difference does it make if you're doing it for a game made 30 years ago? Retard.
there was a post in another adventure thread earlier, the legend entertainment games, the lead developers said it was very important to develop trust with the player, that when a player engages your game they shouldn't be smacked with bullshit and time wasting gotchas or something to that effect. I think sierra probably would have benefited from that mentality.
>>12718216>I think sierra probably would have benefited from that mentality.Legend went defunct in 2004. Sierra went defunct in 2008. Sierra also had 10 years seniority in the industry on them. I think Sierra had a better idea of what they were doing.Although there are a number of games Sierra made that were very player-friendly. Leisure Suit Larry 5 you literally cannot lose.
>>12718234I doubt the excessive cheesiness of dead ends(not just their basic existence but specifically player trolling ones) was what allowed sierra to cling to a few more years. more likely it was the other positive aspects of their games
>>12718216Though there are outliers, the King's Quest games aren't that bad if you play them on their own terms which are: save often and keep many saves so you can travel back in time if you fuck up. They told you this in the manual too, so it wasn't just to troll you. It's like navigating a labyrinth, if you get stuck you can backtrack and try another route.
>>12718467>save often and keep many savesI'll add too that it's helpful to name your saves informatively. If you save before eating the pie, name your save "Before eating the pie". It really helps when you want to go back and try something new.Legend Entertainment were the kings of puzzle centric adventure games though. Neither LucasArts nor Sierra comes close imo.
You don't even get the game right, and furthermore it's one of the easiest puzzles in the game.Seriously, do sierra haters even play their games or their just repeat ecelebs opinions?
>>12713503>*Fromdrones dig up old, corridor simulator shit games...*>"W-what, h-how come it s-sucks? From can do no wrong! They're always right, no matter what! Therefore, I MUST expose myself to these mindlessly boring, brick corridor walking simulators in order to learn to love it (and post about being cool retro gaymer on muh socials)!"Good. I happily wish them to waste as much time as possible playing this trash series, the frustration, boredom, banality and monotony of it turning every minute they play into an hour in their minds. Fromdrone must suffer, as is the ultimate fate of all drones.
>>12715617You sound like the biggest bitch around, but you already know that since you inject estrogen, faggot.
