Is it worth playing?
>>
yes it completely mogs fecal queer solids. it has actually gameplay and a grounded story without magical nanomachines
>>
It's not as good as MGS, but yes.
>>
All 3 and the PSP games too. The PS2 game sucks ass tho
>>
I always felt like this game baits you with the first level which is pretty fast paced and action heavy. and then you're running around catabombs looking for doctors and shit.
>>
>>12714113
I have heard that. What was it called? Omega Strain?
>>
>>12714058
Yea, it's great.
>>
>>12714058
every time i hear about this game people only talk about the taser. Is the game actually any good, it fets compared to MGS but it doesn't seem to be of the same caliber.
>>
>>12714179
metal gear is much more grandiose feeling and has a lot more actual sneaking. but it gets by more on set pieces whereas syphon filter is more pure core gameplay throughout with far fewer interruptions. the story is fine but its just kind of there.
>>
>>12714179
the hard thing you have to get past is that 989 is not nearly as technically or artistically polished as konami in 1998. a less established studio can deliver a decent game but it's typically going to suffer in terms of aesthetic and performance.
>>
>>12714113
This is true
>>
>>12714058
No.
>>
The first two are worth playing, yes. Though Siphon Filter 2 cranks up the difficulty with enemies able to headshot and more stealth missions.
>>
>>12714179
>people only talk about the taser
It's a casual red flag, or fed to them by AI.
Like locking the butler in the fridge in TR2, the taser is a well-known and unique gameplay aspect that can be done early in the game, that gets brought up by people who probably never played the full game or got filtered early, so it's all they can bring to the topic.
>>
>>12714058
Yes.It is a great tps.
>>12714097
>>12714109
>>12714184
Not the same genre.Playing mgs as as a pure tps is no the intended way to play.
>>12714126
That happens way later. The pacing is consistent. You can play the first level slowly as well.Plus, the series is a combination of stealth and action levels.
>>12714179
The taser is overrated. You have to stand still and thus will potentially get shot.
>>
yes, it's a part of the B (or even A) tier PSX games. The PSX is such a good system that great games (but not masterpieces) like Syphon Filter, Dino Crisis 2, Galerians, In Cold Blood, 40 Winks, Pac Man World and Terracon get forgotten about.
>>
>>12714058
>>12714109
chinese metal gear solid but you shoot the gun a lot more.
>>
>>12714058
Absolutely.

First game has some retarded endless respawns and a bit weird pacing. 2 and 3 are 10/10.

The good thing is that all 3 look, feel and play the same. Even the hud is the same. So its one really long ass game.

Protip: play with dpad, it's designed that way. Much easier to aim and get those sweeping headshots than with the stick.
>>
>>12714058
Yes, at least first two entries.
>>
there are 3 ps1 games that are overhyped to shit, especially today, despite being awful to play. A trilogy of cope-shit for people who didnt have better games.

This is one of them.Care to guess the other two two? They begin with C and D btw

If you don't like these games, you don't like the PlayStation, or rather the way players saw the PlayStation in the US and Europe.

Full 3D exploration action, a mix of oldschool and new gameplay ideas, dark atmosphere with coloured lights, enough story focus for the game to be taken seriously but without getting in the way; and a gameplay with some variety but which doesn't get in the way of the core action and balanced in a way that lets everyone play regardless of skill but which also gives room to get good and kick ass.
These games represent everything players wanted out of a PlayStation game in a post Resident Evil / Metal Gear Solid landscape. These games let you BE the 80's-90's american action hero in a way few games managed to before them, you feel like you're Bruce Willis more than the in actual Bruce Willis game (Apocalypse).

I don't like 2 as much because of how much more closed-in and set piece centered the levels are but it's still good. I like my levels to offer a degree of freedom. 3 is as excellent as 1 though if not more, I don't know what some people have against this game.
>>
>>12714058
they have some interest in the way they feature tactical spy scenarios, it has more going on in that department than you would typically find in a bogstandard shooter. the basic fundamentals are going to seem pretty rough from a modern vantage point though, doesn't help that the game is just kind of ugly in general, it's not one of late gen standouts in terms of visuals.
>>
2 is the best of the lot.
1 is this weird mix of shooting missions with Tomb Raider-esque climbing sections (almost completely removed in later games). But it's still a very good game nonetheless.
3 is like an expansion pack detailing past missions.
Omega Strain is the worst, you play as a create-your-agent guy/girl, and the gameplay is crap.
Dark Mirror is fucking awesome.
I didn't play Logan's Shadow.
>>
>>12714058
I got to final level and I have to say, this game is not worth playing unless you are absolutely starved for shitty ancient military shooters. I dont even know why I played it for so long, I guess the ps1 aesthetics can be cool sometimes, but the controls and the gameplay is awful and its not their fault so much because its like one of the very first of its genre.

It helped pave the way for the third person console shooter, but is that a good thing? All of them are absolute garbage, jank as fuck westernslop. Even Gears of War carried the tradition of being absolutely jank as fuck.

989 studios were a bunch of extremely inexperienced developers that made budget titles too. So don't expect a high quality PS1 title.
>>
>>12714716
>>12714304
Ehats the problem with 3? I thought it was great and like it more than SP1.
Syphon Filter 2 is a bigger game so if the issue is 3 was downsized then I guess i can see why 3 is seen as a downgrade.

>>12714058
It's better than Metal Gear for me. MGS was a technical marvel and groundbreaking in presentation and va. So of course any other espionage game looks worse by comparison.
But I prefer the variety in SP over the focus on stealth.

>>12714179
Taser is cool and all but playing vs with a friend in a knife fight is way cooler.
>>
>>12715374
>It's better than Metal Gear for me.
And you know, being a mouthbreathing retard is more acceptable in society these days. So thats cool.
>>
>>12715905
Sorry too much gameplay and not enough cinematics for your tik tok brain?
>>
>>12715940
If you call "gameplay" running around like you have a shite in your pants. Spatiscally throwing your arms around generic corridors to occasionally stop your generic tank controlled spy-man and press the manual aim button to get headshots. Run to corpse, pick up ammo and armor, rinse and fucking repeat.

For fucks sake at least pick another stealth game. Like I said, you're retarded its cool dude.
>>
>>12715959
Wow so you really do hate actually playing games.
Sorry kid that the game is actually rich in gameplay segments to keep the game interesting by making you adapt to the variety of situations instead of just the same gameplay loop + 20 min cutscenes.
>>
>>12714113
There are 3? I thought 2.
>>
Mgs and syphon filter have nothing in common.Only retards believe that a top down stealth focused game with action elements can be compared to a tps game with stealth elements. For added laughs, syphon filter first three levels have more content than the entire two discs of mgs,if you look at it stat wise.

>>12715105
>Tomb Raider-esque climbing sections
The first mission in 2 has you doing said section.Did you even play any of those games?
>>12715165
Zoomie, if you aren't gonna say why you actually didn't like something, don't bother posting.

>fecal queer solids
>>
They are practically the same, so no need to play all three games.
Game is good but they tried to milk the franchise as much as possible during PS1 era instead of expanding it for the next gen consoles.
Big mistakes.
>>
>>12716430
Never understood why people act like a trilogy has to be different to succeed or be good.
Crash trilogy was great.
Residen Evil Trilogy was great.
The 3 GBA Fire Emblems were great.
Etc.
Syphon Filter issue was not having a good transition into the PS2.
>>
>>12714097
lol are you the Caca Shitonica guy?
>>
>>12716421
>did you even play any of those games?
*screams in Pharcom Warehouses*

I absolutely loved these games back in the day, but these days I'm afraid to go back to them.

>Pharcom Warehouses
What is so bad about the map? Is it a fun action level with two opposing factions and the only annoying part is tagging the carriers.
Most of the platforming is practically automated and simplified compared to something like tomb raider.
>>
>>12716716
nta but i think thats the level where you have to explode some barrels on the ground which opens a new path. i found that absolutely infuriating because it took me forever to realize
>>
>>12714058
my god...syphon filter, it's...
>>
>>12714097
>mogs fecal queer solids
Ironic, because Syphon Filter actually sounds like it's a part you might need to buy to fix your toilet.
>>
>>12716775
I feel like the name could have benefited from simply being named either "Siphon" or "Filter"
>>
So many Syphon Filtered ITT
>>
i still remember this commercial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdrBM-265ns
its odd that i dont remember more video game commercials. as i sit here i cant even think of another ps1 commercial
>>
>>12716716
What's that level where you have to climb the lunar landing recreation?
>>
>>12716864
Expo Center iirc

>mfw syphon filter 1/2 fan
>mfw played it in 2000 for the first time and it was one of my favorite games of my childhood
>mfw most of the fanbase now are people with hateboner for gojimbo
So basically yeah, it's a very engaging game with interesting ideas like armor actually does something and explosive weapons being the loudest and the most devastating king. Very cheesy and very frustrating at some points, but I recommend the first and second parts, 9/10.

It's 27 years old, so I don't think Leo would like it anymore.

>/vr/ defends bargain bin American games now
>to the point where they say Siphon Filter is better than MGS1 unironically without trolling
Really grim. Quite grim.

So im guessing Gex is better than Mario, Mortal Kombat is better than Street Fighter, Twisted Metal is better than Gran Turismo (since you're that retarded with comparing genres)

No don't play any video games ever, they will turn you gay and only poseurs like doing anything
>>
>>12717959
That section with all enemies in that armor and with those mini grenades launchers was tense as shit.
I do appreciate the variety in settings, specially ones where everything is going to hell like the subway.
>>
Yes, but be ready for one of the most ridiculous run animations ever to make it into a mainstream title.
>>
>>12716462
Yeah, but Syphon filter 3 came out in november 2001. A full year and a half after the PS2.
>>
>>12717107
Zoomie thinks expressing his emotions without any arguments is somehow constructive?
>Gex is better than Mario
No.Camera/controls and level design wise mario is better.
>Mortal Kombat is better than Street Fighter
Depends on what you like.
>Twisted Metal is better than Gran Turismo
They are not the same genre, retard. And no that wasn't the point since your first two examples were.

This kind of stuff is why I don't like 2 as much as the others. I don't mind some originality here and there but the entire game is like this, gimmicky section or after the other that don't really take advantage of the strengths of the core mechanics. Even the "exploring and shooting" segments of 2 aren't as good as in 1 and 3 because they're so linear and closed in and don't offer as many weapons or give enough choice to the player on how to tackle each individual situation.
I liked the train though, I guess I can accept linear and closed-in on a train.

3 did have a similar boss but not only they did it better launching the guy out of an airplaine is more fun and spectacular but I don't mind it in 3 because it actually also offer some real exploring and shooting in between.
2 feels like a lower scale sequel, because it takes less time to create and debug situations that leave so little room to maneuver to the player; meanwhile with 3 it's like they wanted to go out with a bang before and because they knew the soullessness of the 6th gen would catch up to the series soon enough.
>>
>>12718504
3 gets shat on too much when its better than 1 in every way
